Fr Cantalamessa speaks of the universal call to holiness
2015-12-11 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Fr Raniero Cantalamessa, Preacher to the Papal Household, spoke about our call to holiness on Friday morning in his Second Advent sermon.

Fr Cantalamessa began his sermon by drawing a link between the recently inaugurated Jubilee Year of Mercy and the Second Vatican Council.

He quoted St John XXIII in his opening address for the council when he said “The Church… prefers to make use of the medicine of mercy rather than that of severity” when dealing with errors.

The focus of the homily was on Chapter 5 from Lumen genitum, a key document from Vatican II, the key message of which was the call to holiness.

The new annulment process went into effect this week

Vatican City, Dec 10, 2015 / 03:33 pm (CNA).- With the launch of the Jubilee of Mercy, Pope Francis’ reforms to the annulment process have gone into effect, giving more of a role to the local bishop, dropping automatic appeals, and ensuring that the process is free of charge.

The new process is aimed at streamlining the system for granting annulments out of concern “for the salvation of souls” while affirming the longstanding Catholic teaching on marriage indissolubility.

Originally announced in September, the changes went into effect Dec. 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception and the opening day of the Jubilee for Mercy.

Pope Francis: rescript on reform of Roman Rota
2015-12-11 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis issued a legal decree on Friday, regarding the implementation of the recent reforms to the Church’s marriage law, specifically as far as the role of the Church’s highest appellate court – the Sacred Roman Rota – is concerned. The decree, called a rescript, has six main points, most dealing with technical matters of legal procedure within the Rotal system itself, and with the relationship of the Rota – which is the Church’s highest ordinary appellate court – to other courts in the Church’s legal system.

In an explanatory note published in the edition of L’Osservatore Romano released Friday afternoon, the Dean of the Roman Rota, Msgr. Pio Vito Pinto explained that the first part of the two-part rescript has the purpose of stressing that the reforms already enacted are now in force and must be followed and obeyed. “Because every law of epochal importance, such as the laws reforming the marital nullity process, meets understandable resistance,” explained Msgr. Pinto, “the Pope desired  to emphasize, as did John Paul II for the promulgation of the Code of Canon Law of 1983, that the law is now promulgated and requires compliance.”

“The second part of the rescript,” continued Msgr. Pinto, “specifically relates to the Roman Rota as Apostolic Tribunal, which has always distinguished itself for the sapientia in its judicial decisions.” As an example of this distinction, and of Pope Francis’ ongoing confidence in it, Msgr. Pinto cited the return to the ancient formula of “generic doubt” in cases before the Rota for adjudication. Msgr. Pinto also specified that lower courts are still obliged to adjudicate specific questions, which, if found present, could give grounds for finding a marriage null.

The rescript itself in its preamble affirms its desire to serve the supreme law, which is the salvation of souls, and that all the Church’s legal structures serve therefore as vehicles of reconciliation and renewal for the faithful who have recourse to them.

Below, please find Vatican Radio’s translation of the full text of the rescript, made from the Italian text distributed by the Press Office of the Holy See

Council of Cardinals conclude twelfth meeting
2015-12-12 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis met with the Council of Cardinals from 10-12 December for their twelfth meeting. A statement from the Holy See Press Office said the Holy Father was present for every session.

The Statement said during the first morning, the Council heard from Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, Prefect of the Congregation for Eastern Churches, who gave them an in-depth look at  this “important Congregation”, its activities, responsibilities, and its role in ecumenism.

During this encounter, the Council noted the importance of the Address of the Holy Father on 17 October, during the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the institution of the Synod of Bishops.

In this address, the Pope developed extensively the theme of "collegiality", but also pointed out "the need to proceed with a healthy 'decentralization'."  The Council underlined the need to reflect on the significance of this speech and its importance for the work of the reform of the Curia, and decided to dedicate a specific session to this subject during the next meeting in February 2016.

The Council then returned to work on two new departments, which had previously been discussed on numerous occasions.

Pope Francis celebrates Mass on Our Lady of Guadalupe
2015-12-12 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis celebrated Mass on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Saturday evening, saying Mary “has experienced the divine mercy, and has hosted the very source of this mercy in her womb: Jesus Christ.”

The Holy Father used the homily to reflect on mercy –  and asked that this jubilee year “will be a planting of merciful love in the hearts of individuals, families and nations.”

The Pope said “no sin can cancel [Jesus’] merciful closeness or prevent him from unleashing the grace of conversion, provided we invoke it.”

Pope Francis called on Christian communities be “oases and sources of mercy, witnesses to a charity that does not allow exclusions.”

Pope Francis also confirmed he will visit Mexico from 12-18 February 2016.

Here is an unofficial Vatican Radio translation of the Pope’s homily

“The LORD, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior; he will rejoice over you with gladness, and renew you in his love, he will sing joyfully because of you, as one sings at festivals.” (Zep 3:17-18). These words of the prophet Zephaniah, addressed to Israel, may also be referred to Mary, the Church, and every person, all of whom are loved by God’s merciful love. Yes, God loves us so much that he even rejoices and takes pleasure in us. He loves us with gratuitous love, love without limits, and without expecting anything in return. This merciful love is the most striking attribute of God, the synthesis of which is condensed the Gospel message, the faith of the Church.

Vatileaks trial on hold for two months while experts complete technical evaluations
11/12/2015

vatican city

The trial into the publication of confidential Vatican documents (Vatileaks) has been put on hold for a couple of months to allow time for experts to evaluate electronic devices allegedly used by some of the defendants to communicate, to be heard. The Vatican tribunal is hearing the case.

Gianluigi Nuzzi, the author of “Merchants in the Temple”, one of the books containing the confidential information, tweeted “Trial on hold for at least two months”. He was indicted for his involvement in the leak, alongside Emiliano Fittipaldi, the other journalist, whose book “Avarice” also contains confidential material.

Questioned by journalists, Vatican spokesman Fr. Federico Lombardi, confirmed the news was true but did not give a specific timeframe, underlining that the postponement is due to the need for experts to examine material, as requested by the some of the defendants’ lawyers: “Once an expert has been named and the evidence is accepted, it is normal for several weeks to pass before the results emerge,” Fr. Lombardi said. “We do not know whether it will take seven, nine weeks…the Christmas holidays are also coming up. Two months sound like a plausible hypothesis to me but we cannot predict how much time it will take.”

Pope opens Holy Door in John Lateran Basilica
2015-12-13 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Sunday opened the Holy Door for the Jubilee Year of Mercy, which officially began last week.

During the Mass which followed, the Pope stressed the importance of not giving into sadness, despite our concerns in light of many forms of violence.

The Year of Mercy started 8 Dec on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, and will conclude 20 Nov 2016 on the Feast of Christ the King.

In his homily, Pope Francis reflected on the readings for the third Sunday of Advent, known as Gaudete Sunday, saying that the Lord’s coming “must fill our hearts with joy.”

“We cannot let ourselves be taken in by weariness; sadness in any form is not allowed, even though we have reason to be, with many concerns and the many forms of violence which hurt our humanity.”

“In a historical context of great abuse and violence, especially by men of power, God knows that He will reign over his people, who would never leave them at the mercy of the arrogance of their leaders, and will free them from all anxiety.”

The Pope spoke of the Holy Door opened at the beginning of Mass, not only in the Basilica but around the world.

He said, “even this simple sign is an invitation to joy. It begins a time of the great forgiveness. It is the Jubilee of Mercy. It is time to rediscover the presence of God and his fatherly tenderness.”

In a few off-the-cuff remarks, Pope Francis stressed the importance of God’s tenderness.

“God does not love rigidity. He is Father; He is tender; everything (is) done with the tenderness of the Father.”

Pope Francis called those who will cross the door to be “instruments of mercy, knowing that we will be judged on this.”

“The joy of crossing through the Door of Mercy is accompanied by a commitment to welcome and witness to a love that goes beyond justice, a love that knows no boundaries.”

Pope urges international community to follow up on COP21
2015-12-13 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has urged the international community to urgently follow up on the path set by the climate deal reached in Paris.

Speaking in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday after the recitation of the Angelus prayer, the Pope recalled the just concluded Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris which saw the signing of an agreement – he said – “described by many as historic”.

The Paris pact aims to curb global warming to less than 2°Celsius by the end of the century; it saw nearly 200 countries taking part in tense negotiations over two weeks to strike the first deal to commit all nations to cut emissions.

Talking the "hope" and "freedom" of mercy at Domus Mass, Pope pounces on "clerical stiffness that contains no hope": http://bit.ly/1Md2wqT

Pope Francis: "hope in God's mercy gives us freedom"
2015-12-14 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio)  Pope Francis says that it is hope in God’s mercy  that opens up horizons and gives us freedom.

The Pope was speaking on Monday during the homily at morning Mass in Casa Santa Marta.

Reflecting on the first reading of the day from the Book of Numbers which tells of Balaam, a prophet hired by a king to curse Israel, Pope Francis said “Balaam had his faults, and he had sins as well, because we all have sins. We are all sinners”.

And reflecting on the fact that in the Gospel the chief priests question Jesus and ask with which authority does he act, the Pope said: "they have no horizons, they are men who are locked in their calculations, they are slaves to their rigidity”

“Human calculations “– the Pope said – “close hearts and shut out freedom", whilst “hope gives us levity".

Pope Francis remarked on the beauty of freedom, of the hope of men and women of the Church.

On the other hand, he denounced the rigidity of men and women of the Church: “that clerical stiffness that contains no hope”.

“In this Year of Mercy – the Pope said - there are these two paths: one of those who hope in God’s mercy and know that God is the Father; and then there are those who take refuge in the slavery of rigidity and know nothing of God's mercy”.

Pope Francis: work in accord with human dignity
2015-12-14 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis received the participants in a major pastoral initiative aimed at young people and sponsored by the Bishops Conference of Italy – the CEI – on Monday. The Progetto Policoro began twenty years ago as a program to help unemployed young people of southern Italy to develop skills, find work, and most importantly, nurture a healthy sense of dignity and self-worth by creating and developing ties to the larger ecclesial and social community.

In the two decades since its founding through the work of don Mario Operti (a priest of the archdiocese of Turin), the Progetto Policoro has grown and spread through thirteen regions of Italy, and has sponsored hundreds of cooperatives, formation initiatives and small businesses.

In remarks to the Progetto Policoro on Monday, Pope Francis said, “Your task is not simply to help young people to find jobs: it is also a responsibility of evangelization, through the sanctifying value of work – not any work, though – not work that exploits, crushing, humiliating, mortifying [the worker], but the kind of work that makes a man truly free, work that accords with man’s noble dignity.”

The document, entitled ‘Identity and Mission of the Religious Brother in the Church’, was presented at a press conference by the head of the Congregation, Cardinal João Braz de Aviz, and its secretary, Archbishop José Rodríguez Carballo.

Lay religious men, or brothers as they’re commonly called,  make up about a fifth of all male religious in the Catholic Church today. They are men who are not ordained to the priesthood but are normally consecrated to a life of service within the different orders, societies or congregations.

Some six thousand religious men and women from around the world will meet in Rome from January 28th to February 2nd 2016 for a Jubilee Year encounter focused on the theme ‘Consecrated Life in Communion’

Pope: "the Church’s wealth lies in the poor, not in material riches"
2015-12-15 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis says the Church must be humble, poor and trusting in the Lord.

Speaking during Mass at Casa Santa Marta on Tuesday morning the Pope emphasized the fact that poverty is the first of the Beatitudes, and that the poor are the Church’s true riches
.

Commenting on the first reading from the Book of Zephaniah in which Jesus rebukes the chief priests and warns them that even prostitutes will precede them into the Kingdom of Heaven, Pope Francis said that still today temptations can corrupt the witness of the church.

“A Church that is truly faithful to the Lord – he said - must be humble, poor and trusting in God”.

The Pope also made it quite clear that to be a humble Church or a humble person one must be prepared to say: “I am a sinner”. Humility - he said – is not a pretense; it’s not a theatrical attitude. True humility demands that the Church and  that each and every one of us take a first step and recognizes one’s sinfulness.

And if anyone has the habit – Francis said – of being judgmental, pointing to the defects of others and gossiping about them, then he is not a humble person.

Overcome indifference and win peace: 2016 Peace Day Message
2015-12-15 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Tuesday issued his message for the World Day of Peace, 1 Jan 2016. The theme of the Message is: “Overcome indifference and win peace.”

You can find the full text of the Pope's message for the World Day of Peace here.

In the message, dated 8 Dec 2015, the Pope acknowledged the various forms of war, terrorism, and persecution present in today’s world, but said there is reason to hope. He cited several events over the course of the year 2015, including the various initiatives confronting climate change, the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, and the Jubilee of Mercy.

Referencing the theme of the message, the Holy Father then highlighted various forms of indifference in society. First, there is indifference to God, which in turn leads to indifference to one’s neighbour and subsequently to the environment.

Pope Francis also addressed what he referred to as an “indifference to mercy,” as seen with the Genesis account of Cain murdering his brother Abel. In contrast, God intervenes, the message reads: “He sees, hears, comes down, and delivers. God does not remain indifferent. He is attentive and He acts.”

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis held his weekly General Audience on Wednsday. GENERAL AUDIENCE: On Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy
Dec 16

Below is a ZENIT translation of Pope Francis' address during this morning's weekly General Audience in St. Peter's Square:

* * *

THE HOLY FATHER’S CATECHESIS

Dear Brothers and Sisters, good morning!

Last Sunday, the Holy Door was opened in the Basilica of St. John Lateran, Cathedral of Rome, and a Door of Mercy was opened in the Cathedral of every diocese of the world, as well as in shrines and churches indicated by bishops. The Jubilee is in the whole world, not only in Rome. I wanted this sign of the Holy Door to be present in every particular Church, so that the Jubilee of Mercy could become a shared experience by every person. Thus the Holy Year got underway in the whole Church and is celebrated in every diocese as at Rome. Moreover, the first Holy Door was opened in fact in the heart of Africa. And Rome, see, is the visible sign of the universal communion. May this ecclesial communion become ever more intense, so that the Church is a living sign of the Father’s love and mercy in the world.

Pope Francis warns Catholic pilgrims to be beware of scams after £50,000 police raid

Rome police target souvenir sellers during Jubilee Year

Pope Francis has warned Catholics to beware people who will look to profit from their faith after police seized fake parchments worth an estimated £50,000 from a souvenir shop near the Vatican.

Rome's financial police have placed 35 officer on operation Jubilaeum, which aims to counter the influx of traders looking to make a profit out of Jubilee Year.

Speaking to his weekly general audience in St Peter's Square, Pope Francis told pilgrims: "Be careful! Beware of someone who is sly or sneaky who tells you that you need to pay. Salvation cannot be paid for, salvation cannot be bought. Jesus is the door and Jesus is free of charge."

Prior to the start of the Jubilee Year, Archbishop Rino Fisichella, president of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization, said pilgrims must be vigilant not only of terrorist threats but also of scam artists who see the Holy Year as "a source of income".

Before the start of the audience, pilgrims sang "Happy Birthday" to the pope who will celebrate his 79th birthday on Thursday.

As he made his way to the stage, veteran Mexican journalist, Valentina Alazraki, presented Pope Francis with a sombrero-shaped birthday cake on behalf of the Mexican people.
