Pope Francis visits rehab hospital, decries drug legalization
24, 2013, 3:30 p.m.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Visiting with a group of recovering addicts in a Brazilian hospital Wednesday night, Pope Francis criticized the regional push to legalize drugs, saying society must instead tackle root causes of substance abuse such as the lack of education and justice.

Dressed in his simple white cassock and returning to this city from a daylong pilgrimage to one of Catholicism’s most revered shrines, Francis greeted doctors, nuns, nurses and patients, some waiting in wheelchairs in a driving rain.

“The scourge of drug-trafficking, that favors violence and sows the seeds of suffering and death, requires of society as a whole an act of courage,” the pope said, speaking in Portuguese. “A reduction in the spread and influence of drug addiction will not be achieved by a liberalization of drug use, as is currently being proposed in various parts of Latin America.”

Instead, he said, “it is necessary to confront the problems underlying the use of these drugs, by promoting greater justice, educating young people in the values that build up life in society, accompanying those in difficulty and giving them hope for the future.”

Vatican officials said the pope met with 10 recovering addicts from the so-called City of God favela, or slum, made famous in the 2002 movie of the same name, about boys growing up in the violent neighborhood. On Thursday, Francis will venture into another favela, one so poor and dangerous that it is sometimes called the Gaza Strip.

Ships to guard Copacabana Beach for pope

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazil's Defense Ministry says four navy ships will watch over Copacabana beach when Pope Francis takes part in a Way of the Cross procession.

The ships will cruise the length of the famed beach Friday checking boats near where Francis will take part in the procession with an expected 1 million faithful.

A ministry statement Wednesday says the security plan includes four other ships and 22 smaller boats to watch the beaches of Rio de Janeiro state during the pontiff's visit.

Security during Francis' visit has been a worry for Brazilian authorities because of his insistence on having contact with the faithful.

Pope Francis: defeating the darkness of drug dependency

(Vatican Radio) From the Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida to the “shrine of human suffering” that is the St Francis of Assisi hospital, located in the run-down Tijuca district of northern Rio de Janeiro. That was how Pope Francis himself described his visit on Wednesday afternoon to the hospital, run by young Franciscan friars and sisters who care for the poorest and most marginalized slum dwellers. During the visit, the Pope blessed a new wing of the hospital dedicated to the rehabilitation of drug users, saying he embraced every single person struggling with drug addiction.

Pope Francis attacks drug legalisation in Latin America

Pope Francis led a Mass for World Youth Day

Pope Francis has criticised drug legalisation plans in Latin America during the inauguration of a clinic for drug addicts in Rio de Janeiro.

The roots of drug abuse should be tackled, he said on the third day of his visit to Brazil.

Uruguay is close to allowing the legal sale of marijuana, with other countries pondering similar liberalisation.

Earlier, the Argentine-born pontiff celebrated the first Mass of his trip, at the Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida.

He warned tens of thousands of faithful against the "passing idols" of money, power and pleasure.

After the visit to Aparecida, in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo, the pope flew back to Rio de Janeiro.

At the inauguration of a drug rehabilitation clinic at the Sao Francisco hospital, he hugged former addicts and heard their stories.

Pope 'for the poor' to visit Rio favela

RIO DE JANEIRO – Just a short ride away from Rio’s legendary beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana are some of the most crime-ridden slums in Latin America. Known here as favelas, they are equally legendary, but for all the wrong reasons. Pockets of relentless poverty, drugs and weapons flood streets dotted with ramshackle buildings.

Pope Francis will step into one of these neighborhoods, Varginha, in the larger Manguinhos favela, on Thursday.

'Slum pope' tells slum residents not to lose hope
Published: July 24, 2013

RIO DE JANEIRO — Pope Francis is bringing a message of hope to residents of one of Rio de Janeiro's slums, telling them not to be discouraged even in the face of corruption by their leaders.

It was a clear reference to the violent protests that paralyzed parts of Brazil in recent weeks by residents furious over rampant corruption and inefficiency within Brazil's political class.

In a speech Thursday to residents of the Varghina shantytown, Francis blasted the "culture of selfishness and individualism" that persists in the world and encouraged efforts in Brazil to end hunger and poverty.

Pope Francis: the humblest offer the world a lesson in solidarity

Pope Francis on Thursday visited the Community of Varginha which is part of the Manguinhos Favela in Rio. Here he visited the local parish, prayed in the tiny Church of St. Jerome Emiliani, and addressed the community gathered to greet him in a football field.

Please find below the full text of the Pope's discourse.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

It is wonderful to be here with you! From the start, my wish in planning this visit to Brazil was to be able to visit every district throughout the nation. I would have liked to knock on every door, to say “good morning”, to ask for a glass of cold water, to take a cafezinho, to speak as one would to family friends, to listen to each person pouring out his or her heart – parents, children, grandparents ... But Brazil is so vast! It is impossible to knock on every door! So I chose to come here, to visit your community, which today stands for every district in Brazil. How wonderful it is to be welcomed with such love, generosity, and joy! One need only look at the way you have decorated the streets of the community; this is a further mark of affection, it comes from your heart, from the heart of all Brazilians in festive mood. Many thanks to each of you for this kind welcome! And I thank Archbishop Orani Tempesta as well as Rangler and Joana for their kind words.

1. From the moment I first set foot on Brazilian soil, right up to this meeting here with you, I have been made to feel welcome. And it is important to be able to make people welcome; this is something even more beautiful than any kind of ornament or decoration. I say this because when we are generous in welcoming people and sharing something with them – some food, a place in our homes, our time – not only do we no longer remain poor: we are enriched. I am well aware that when someone needing food knocks at your door, you always find a way of sharing food; as the proverb says, one can always “add more water to the beans”! And you do so with love, demonstrating that true riches consist not in material things, but in the heart!

And the Brazilian people, particularly the humblest among you, can offer the world a valuable lesson in solidarity, a word that is too often forgotten or silenced, because it is uncomfortable. I would like to make an appeal to those in possession of greater resources, to public authorities and to all people of good will who are working for social justice: never tire of working for a more just world, marked by greater solidarity! No one can remain insensitive to the inequalities that persist in the world! Everybody, according to his or her particular opportunities and responsibilities, should be able to make a personal contribution to putting an end to so many social injustices. The culture of selfishness and individualism that often prevails in our society is not what builds up and leads to a more habitable world: it is the culture of solidarity that does so, seeing others not as rivals or statistics, but brothers and sisters.

I would like to encourage the efforts that Brazilian society is making to integrate all its members, including those who suffer most and are in greatest need, through the fight against hunger and deprivation. No amount of “peace-building” will be able to last, nor will harmony and happiness be attained in a society that ignores, pushes to the margins or excludes a part of itself. A society of that kind simply impoverishes itself, it loses something essential. Let us always remember this: only when we are able to share do we become truly rich; everything that is shared is multiplied! The measure of the greatness of a society is found in the way it treats those most in need, those who have nothing apart from their poverty!

Pope Francis: Prayer service at Copacabana with WYD pilgrims (full texts)

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis greeted young pilgrims taking part in World Youth Day celebrations in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Thursday. The sprawling sands of Rio’s famous Copacabana beach was the scene of the gathering, which was the first official encounter of pilgrims with the Holy Father during the week of events leading to the 28th World Youth Day on Sunday, July 28th.

The Copacabana appointment opened with an extraordinary display by 150 young people who offered an artistic interpretation of daily life in the “Marvelous City”. The festivities centered on a prayer service that included a reading from the Gospel according to St. Luke, which recounts the episode of the Transfiguration (9:28-36). Prayers of the faithful were offered, as well as testimonies from five young people representing every inhabited continent.

In brief words of greeting to the young people, Pope Francis expressed his joy at being able to celebrate with them, and made his own the hopeful words of encouragement spoken by Bl. John Paul II at the 1987 World Youth Day in his native Buenos Aires, “I have great hope in you! I hope above all that you will renew your fidelity to Jesus Christ and to his redeeming Cross.”

Following the Gospel reading, the Holy Father delivered a homily in which he focused on the twin themes of faith in and faithfulness to Christ, in spiritual commitment and the discipleship of everyday life. As he has since the very beginning of his pontificate, Francis spoke of the spirit of adventure the imbues a life given over to Christ, and renewed his call never to tire of asking God’s forgiveness when there is need of it in one’s life.

Below, please find the full texts of Pope Francis’ greeting and homily:

Pope Francis draws up to 1 million people to Brazil’s Copacabana beach
Published on Thu Jul 25 2013

RIO DE JANEIRO—Pope Francis on Thursday issued his first social manifesto, calling on the rich to wipe out vast inequalities, and later received an ecstatic welcome from up to a million people on Rio’s famed Copacabana beach.

On Thursday night, when Francis presided at the World Youth Day opening on Copacabana beach, he was driven slowly through a huge adoring crowd, stopping to kiss babies and even to give his white skullcap to someone who had sewn a homemade one for him and ran to the car to hand it to him.

The weather, which has been wreaking havoc on events, forced organizers to move this weekend’s two final gatherings to Copacabana from a pasture on the outskirts of the city because it had become a vast field of mud.

WYD Rio: Pope hears confessions of young people

(Vatican Radio) On day five of his apostolic journey to Brazil for World Youth Day, Pope Francis was driven to Rio de Janeiro’s Quinta da Boa Vista park, which also houses the city’s zoo and National Museum of Natural History, to hear the confessions of a group of young people. The park, whose name literally means “farm or park of the beautiful panorama” was once owned by the Jesuits (XVI-XVII c.) before the Company of Jesus was expelled from colonial Brazil.

World Youth Day organizers have set up a massive area in the park with individual, white confessionals so that young people from every nationality can privately receive the sacrament of reconciliation from a priest speaking their own languages.
