Wednesday, Jan. 17 (Santiago, Temuco, Santiago)

- 8 a.m. (6 a.m.) Departure by plane for Temuco.

Pope Francis meets with sex abuse victims in Chile

Santiago, Chile, Jan 16, 2018 / 08:13 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis met privately Tuesday with 6 victims of sexual abuse committed by priests in Chile, the papal spokesman has reported. The meeting had not been previously announced as a part of the Pope’s schedule.

"Today after lunch, the Holy Father met with a small group of victims of sexual abuse committed by priests, at the Apostolic Nunciature in Santiago. The meeting was strictly private, and there was no one else present: only the Pope and the victims. In this way, the were able to share their sufferings with Pope Francis, who listened to them, and prayed and cried with them," reported Greg Burke, director of the Vatican’s press office.

At a press conference from Santiago, Burke told reporters that the meeting lasted half an hour.

The Pope’s visit to Chile has been marked by protests, including some from groups who allege a bishop appointed by the Pope covered up acts of sexual abuse committed by an influential Chilean priest.

Pope Francis delivered the homily at Holy Mass in Temuco – the ancestral lands of Chile’s indigenous Mapuche people – inviting all to unity and warning against enforcing it through violence.

In his homily at Mass on Wednesday in Temuco, Pope Francis invited the indigenous peoples of Chile to seek the unity of which Jesus spoke: “That they all be one (Jn 17:21)”.

The Pope spoke about the beauty of the Araucania, thanking God for allowing him to visit it and its people.

“This landscape lifts us up to God, and it is easy to see His hand in every creature. Many generations of men and women have loved this land with fervent gratitude,” he said.

Special greetings to Chile's indigenous people

Pope Francis paused to greet “in a special way the members of the Mapuche people, as well as the other indigenous peoples who dwell in these southern lands: the Rapanui (from Easter Island), the Aymara, the Quechua and the Atacameños, and many others.”

Pope Francis on Wednesday urged young Chileans to be “protagonists of change” in the nation and in the Church by remaining “connected” to Christ and doing what He would do in their place.

Speaking to them at the National Shrine of Maipu dedicated to the Our Lady of Carmel, in Santiago, the Argentinian Pope improvised amply in his native Spanish, underscoring the importance and experience of young people, saying he wants them to help the Church “to be more faithful to the Gospel,” and “draw closer to Jesus.”

Pope Francis has urged Chile’s intellectuals and academics to sensitize the nation as to the importance of showing special care and respect for indigenous communities and their cultural traditions.

Addressing over 1,000 top Chilean academics at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile in Santiago, Pope Francis underscored the responsibility of educators in creating the conditions for peaceful coexistence in the country.

ABOARD THE PAPAL FLIGHT TO IQUIQUE, Chile (CNS) -- Love was literally in the air as Pope Francis performed an impromptu wedding ceremony at 36,000 feet aboard his flight in Chile.

During his flight to Iquique Jan. 18, the pope was approached by LatAm flight steward Carlos Ciuffardi Elorriaga and asked for a blessing for him and his wife, stewardess Paula Podest Ruiz.

The couple were supposed to be married in their home parish in Santiago Feb. 27, 2010. However, tragedy struck when an earthquake destroyed the church. Eight years later, they remained only civilly married.

Ciuffardi told journalists aboard the flight that, after he explained their story, he asked the pope for their blessing.

At that moment, the pope surprised the couple with offering to marry them right there on the plane.

Ciuffardi said the pope asked the couple, "Well, do you want to get married?"

"I said, 'Well, yes. Are you sure?' Then the pope said, "Are YOU sure?' I told him, 'Yes! Let's get married,'" Ciuffardi recalled excitedly.

The Director of the Holy See Press Office, Greg Burke, says the wedding Pope Francis performed aboard the papal plane bound for Iquique on Thursday was "totally legit" and "doctrinally OK".
 
The official marriage certificate reads: "On 18 January 2018, aboard the papal plane from Santiago to Iquique, Mr. Carlos Ciuffardi Elorriaga and Ms. Paula Podest Ruiz contracted marriage, in the presence of the witness, Ignacio Cueto. The Holy Father Pope Francis received their consent."

Pope urges Chileans to ensure no one misses the “joy of the party” ‎

Pope Francis on Thursday held up the plea of Mary at the marriage feast of Cana - ‎“They have no wine” ‎- and called on Chileans to be attentive to the needs of the oppressed, the exploited and the dispossessed and ensure they don’t “miss the joy of the party”.

Pope Francis made the exhortation in his homily at a Mass for the integration of peoples celebrated in honour of Our Lady of Carmel, Mother and Queen of Chile, at Campus Lobito in the northern city of Iquique. 

Party at Cana – contagious joy

Holding out the episode of the “party” at Cana, Pope Francis said that the “Gospel is a constant invitation to joy” as it happened with Mary at the Annunciation, the shepherds, Elizabeth and the good thief.  “The Gospel message is a wellspring of joy,” the Pope said. The people of northern Chile, the Pope noted, are no stranger to this “contagious” joy of the Gospel, which is visible in their  patron’s feasts, religious dances, popular pieties, singing, dancing and music which “turn the whole town into a party”.

Pope Francis has departed from Chile ending the first leg of his 22nd apostolic journey abroad. He arrived in the capital, Santiago, on Monday 15 and went on to visit Temuco in the south and Iquique in the north of the country.

The papal plane took off on Thursday evening from the “Diego Aracena” International Airport in the city of Iquique and is heading for Lima, the capital of Peru where he will spend the next three days.

Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet was at the Airport for a brief personal encounter before saying goodbye.

Various Delegations were on the tarmac to see the Pope off and he received the Guard of Honour salute before boarding the plane.

Pope Francis arrived in Peru on Thursday evening kicking off the second leg of his 22nd apostolic visit abroad. For a series of reasons the people of Peru are awaiting his words and presence with high expectation and his visit promises to be dense with activity and inspiration as he is scheduled, amongst other things, to address political leaders, celebrate Holy Mass, meet with priests and religious and pay tribute to the nation’s beloved Vergin of La Puerta. One highlight of Francis' visit will most certainly be his meeting on Friday with the indigenous peoples of Peru’s Amazon rainforest during which he is expected to issue a message of warning and of hope to the world.

Pope Francis arrived in Peru’s capital city Lima on Thursday evening beginning the second leg of an apostolic visit that is also scheduled to take him to the Amazon city of Puerto Maldonado and  to the northern coastal city of Trujillo.

The Pope will be in Peru from 18 to 21. This is the third papal journey to the nation after Saint Pope John Paul II who visited the nation twice, in 1985 and 1988.

The Amazon climate of Puerto Maldonado has impacted the usual protocol a papal visit is tied to with the official courtesy visit to Peru’s President taking place late Friday afternoon to allow him to travel to Puerto Maldonado in the morning thus avoiding tropical afternoon downpours.

Puerto Maldonado gateway to Peruvian Amazon

In Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to the Peruvian Amazon which makes up some 60% of the nation’s territory, Pope Francis will hold a highly anticipated meeting with some 4000 representatives of different indigenous peoples.

During the meeting – which takes place within the “Laudato Sì” framework, Francis’s encyclical “on the care of our common home” will be presented in some of the indigenous languages.

Pope Francis on Friday put the cause of the indigenous people of Amazonia in the heart of the Church, sharing their challenges and reaffirming a whole-hearted option for the ‎defence of life, the earth and cultures.

“You are a living memory of the mission that God has entrusted to us all: the ‎protection of our common home,” the ‎Pope told some 4,000 natives of Amazonia gathered at the Madre de Dios indoor stadium at Puerto Maldonado, some 900 kms east of the Peruvian capital Lima.

The theme for Pope Francis’ visit to Peru is “United by Hope” and he told authorities, civil society and diplomats  gathered at Government Palace in Lima on Friday that “seeing this land is itself a reason for hope.”

The Pope continued by saying that Peru was a country steeped in hospitality, solidarity and esteem for others.

Pope Francis has invited Peruvians hard hit by El Nino storms and devastating floods to overcome their losses and build a better future by coming together as a community.

The Pope’s words of closeness and encouragement came during Holy Mass celebrated in Trujillo, a coastal town in the north of the country which is still reeling from devastating floods nearly a year ago that caused many victims, toppled hundreds of thousands of homes and caused much devastation and displacement.

Pope Francis spoke to Peru’s priests, religious men and women, and seminarians in Trujillo on Saturday, inviting them to live their vocation in “remembrance”.

The Holy Father told the young men and women to always look to their own past and roots so they may grow and bear fruit. He called this a “deuteronomic” dimension of life.

“Remembrance looks to the past in order to discover the sap that nourished the hearts of disciples for centuries, and thus comes to recognize God’s presence in the life of his people,” he said.

Pope Francis then spoke about three virtues of remembrance.
