Pope meeting Italian children from Brescia in the Vatican on April 7, 2018.
Pope Francis offered Italian children from Brescia the example of St. Francis who embraced Jesus’ dream and stripped himself of the 'old man'.
By Robin Gomes

Pope Francis challenged young people on Saturday to listen to Jesus and change something within them in order to build God’s kingdom of love.  Meeting some 3000 children from the northern Italian Diocese of Brescia, the Pope wished that the upcoming Synod of Bishops in October on “Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment” be well prepared for by truly listening to young people.  He said true listening also means openness to change, walking together and sharing dreams.

Pope to Prado priests: ‘Poor need to hear Gospel’
07 April 2018, 11:24

Pope Francis with members of the Association of the Priests of Prado  (Vatican Media)
The Holy Father tells the Priests of Prado that the poor have a right to hear about Jesus Christ and the Gospel and that their job is to do so with missionary dynamism.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis on Saturday invited a delegation from the Association of the Priests of Prado to follow in the footsteps of their founder, Blessed Antoine Chevrier.

The Pope said he had been “struck by the poverty of the most deprived people of his time”. This led him “to be close to them so that they could come to know and love Jesus Christ.”

Pope Francis said Blessed Antoine’s spiritual children are imbued with his same love for Jesus and the same zeal for evangelization.

Bring consolation of the Gospel

“Our age also knows its poverty – both old and new, material and spiritual – and there are many around us who experience suffering, injuries, miseries, and anxieties of all kinds.”

He said the poor are often “distant from the Church and the consolations of the Gospel”. The Church, he said, relies on the Priests of Prado to reach them in their need.

The Holy Father expressed his approval and encouragement for the pastoral action carried out by the Association, calling it “a charism that touches me personally and that is at the heart of the missionary renewal to which the whole Church is called”.

Vilnius, Lithuania, Apr 6, 2018 / 03:03 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Among Catholic devotions, the Divine Mercy message is well-known: the iconic image of Christ, with rays of red and white pouring from his heart; St. Faustina, called the “Apostle of Divine Mercy;” and the Basilica of Divine Mercy in Krakow, Poland.

But what you might not know is that more than 450 miles north of Krakow, in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius, there is another Sanctuary of Divine Mercy, one which houses the first image of the merciful Jesus created, and the only Image of Divine Mercy St. Faustina herself ever saw.

Pope Francis on Divine Mercy Sunday: ‘Contemplate boundless love’
08 April 2018, 11:14

Pope Francis celebrates Mass on Divine Mercy Sunday
On the Second Sunday of Easter, Divine Mercy Sunday, Pope Francis’ homily focuses on Doubting Thomas’ who eventually “falls in love with the Lord.”
By Sr. Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp

In his homily during the celebration of the Divine Mercy Sunday liturgy, Pope Francis points out that the verb “to see” is repeated over and over in the Gospel text (John 20:19-31). Although the disciples see the Lord, the Gospel “does not describe how they saw him,” the Pope said. By mentioning the detail “he showed them his hands and his side” (v. 20), the Gospel seems “to tell us that that is how the disciples,” and Thomas, “recognized Jesus: through his wounds.”

A guide to Christianity for the 21st Century: the new Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis
09 April 2018, 12:28

The new Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis, "On the Call to Holiness in Today's World"
On April 9, which this year marks the transferred Solemnity of the Annunciation, the Vatican releases the latest Apostolic Exhortation from Pope Francis: Gaudete et exsultate: On the call to holiness in today’s world.
By Christopher Wells

“The Lord asks everything of us, and in return offers us true life, the happiness for which we were created.”

In his third Apostolic Exhortation (following Evangelii gaudium and Amoris laetitia) Pope Francis reflects on the call to holiness, and how we can respond to that call in the modern world. “My modest goal” in the Exhortation, Pope Francis says, “is to repropose the call to holiness in a practical way for our own time.”

The five chapters of Gaudete et exsultate follow a logical progression, beginning with a consideration of the call to holiness as it is in itself. The Holy Father than examines two “subtle enemies of holiness,” namely, contemporary gnosticism and contemporary pelagianism. [ Video Embed: Guide to living Christianity in the 21st century]

Holiness in living the Beatitudes

The heart of Gaudete et exsultate is dedicated to the idea that holiness means following Jesus. In this third chapter, Pope Francis considers each of the Beatitudes as embodying what it means to be holy. But if the Beatitudes show us what holiness means, the Gospel also shows us the criterion by which we will be judged: “I was hungry and you gave me food… thirsty and you gave me drink… a stranger and you welcomed me… naked and you clothed me… sick and you took care of me… in prison and you visited me.”

Pope tells Missionaries of Mercy their service is precious for the Church
10 April 2018, 10:44

Pope Francis receives the Missionaries of Mercy in audience in the Vatican's Sala Regia  (Vatican Media)
During an audience with some 550 Missionaries of Mercy in the Vatican, Pope Francis reaffirmed them in their mission saying they provide a much needed service to the Church and warned them that the Christian path is an ardous one, "with stones upon which to stumble and banana peels on which to slip".
By Sr Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp

The Missionaries of Mercy are meeting in Rome for a few days of prayer and reflection organized by the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization.

During an audience with Pope Francis on Tuesday, he told them that they are providing a much needed service to the Church.

Although his initial intention was that their mandate would cover only the Jubilee of Mercy, the Pope told them that he had decided to prolong their service because of the many testimonies of conversion attributed to their service.

Pope at General Audience: Baptism 'Christifies' us
11 April 2018, 12:22

Pope Francis at the General Audience in St. Peter's Square  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis has urged parents to baptize their children soon after birth, thus giving them the opportunity – and the free gift - of having Jesus Christ live inside them from the beginning. He was speaking during the weekly General Audience.
By Linda Bordoni

Addressing the pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the Wednesday General Audience, the Pope focused his catechism on the intrinsic link between Easter and the Sacrament of Baptism.

Baptism: an unmerited gift that changes our existence

With a special appeal to new parents he highlighted the fact that Baptism is an unmerited gift, the door to the other sacraments, thanks to which Christians are able to grow in a life of grace until reaching their true homeland in heaven. “The baptismal font illuminates all of our life, guiding our steps toward the Jerusalem in Heaven,” he said.

Pope Francis’ hopes for greater equality in the distribution of wealth
11 April 2018, 12:02

Pope Francis has contributed the Preface to a book that will be released in Italy on 12 April.
By Sr Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp

In a preface contributed to a book entitled “Power and Money: Social Justice according to Bergoglio” by Michele Zanzucchi, Pope Francis once again proposes an economic system that favors everyone instead of a few.

The world’s wealth distributed unequally

Pope Francis talks about an “ambivalence” created by the world of finance and commerce. Never before have these two worlds allowed so many people to benefit from so many goods, while at the same time “excessively exploiting common resources, increasing inequality and deteriorating the planet.” He says that during the trips he has taken since becoming Pope he has seen first-hand this “paradox of a globalized economy which could feed, cure, and house all of the inhabitants who populate our common home, but which– as a few worrisome statistics indicate – instead concentrates the same wealth owned by half of the world’s population in the hands of very few people”.

Pope Francis admits 'serious mistakes' in Chile sex abuse case

Vatican City, Apr 11, 2018 / 01:11 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- In a letter addressed to Chile's bishops, Pope Francis admitted to making “serious mistakes” in handling the nation's massive sex abuse crisis and asked for forgiveness. The pope summoned Chile’s bishops to Rome to address the issue, and invited victims to meet with him as well.

Referring to a recent investigation of abuse cover-up in Chile carried out by Maltese Archbishop Charles Scicluna, Pope Francis said that after a “slow reading” of the report, “I can affirm that all the testimonies collected speak in a stark manner, without additives or sweeteners, of many crucified lives and I confess that this has caused me pain and shame.”

Francis admitted to misjudging the severity of the affair, telling Chile's bishops that “I have made serious mistakes in the judgement and perception of the situation, especially due to a lack of truthful and balanced information.”

He asked the bishops to “faithfully communicate” this recognition, and he apologized to all those he might have offended.

In addition, he summoned all of Chile's 32 bishops to Rome to discuss the conclusions of Scicluna's report in the third week of May, where they will discussion the conclusions of the report as well the pope's own conclusions on the matter.

Analysis: Who is the Pope’s new canon law expert?
By Andrea Gagliarducci

Vatican City, Apr 11, 2018 / 12:00 am (CNA).- The new president of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts is a well-respected canon law expert, with pastoral, scholarly, and curial experience.

On April 7, Archbishop Filippo Iannone was appointed president of the Vatican dicastery charged with overseeing the interpretation of canon law and providing canonical guidance to other Vatican offices. Iannone, only 60, has served in the dicastery as an adjunct secretary since Nov. 11, 2017.

Those who know him well say that he has a natural ability to work behind the curtain and a proven sense of discretion, which seems to make him appreciated everywhere his career in the Church has taken him.

Iannone, a Carmelite, replaces Cardinal Francesco Coccopalmerio, who presided over the Vatican’s ‘legal’ dicastery from 2007 to 2018.

Pope at Mass: ‘Easter joy brings obedience, witness, realism’
12 April 2018, 11:58

Pope Francis celebrates Mass in the Casa Santa Marta on Thursday morning  (Vatican Media)
In his homily at Mass in the Casa Santa Marta on Thursday morning, the Pope says Easter joy brings with it Christian obedience, witness, and realism, which lead to the persecution of Christians around the world for their “bothersome” witness to Jesus.

Pope Francis at Mass on Thursday morning recalled the many Christians persecuted in the world today, saying Christian witness can be bothersome to those who refuse to listen to the truth.

In his homily, the Holy Father reflected on the three traits that are born from Easter joy: obedience, witness, and realism.

Easter joy

The Pope said the 50 days of Easter before Pentecost were a “time of joy” for the Apostles because of Christ’s Resurrection. Theirs was a true joy, he said, but it contained tints of doubt and fear. Only after Pentecost and the descent of the Holy Spirit, Pope Francis said the Apostles’ joy became courageous, since they now understood the meaning of the Paschal mystery.

Pope at Mass: ‘Christ gives true freedom’
13 April 2018, 12:49

In his homily at Mass on Friday morning in the Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis says true Christian freedom means having the clear-minded openness to make room for God in our lives and to follow Jesus.

Pope Francis at Mass on Friday morning reflected on three examples of freedom – the Pharisee Gamaliel, the Apostles Peter and John, and Jesus – saying true freedom means making room for God in our lives and following Him.

The freedom we hear about during this Easter season, the Pope said, is the freedom of the sons and daughters of God. Jesus gave us this freedom “through his redemptive act” on the Cross.

Gamaliel: the Pharisee

Pope Francis said Gamaliel is the first example of freedom offered by the day’s readings. He was a doctor of the law and Pharisee, who persuaded the Sanhedrin to free the apostles Peter and John.

Gamaliel, the Holy Father said, was “a free man, who reasoned with a clear mind”, and he convinced his colleagues that “time would take its toll” on the Christian movement of his day.

“The free man is not afraid of time: he lets God do the work. He allows God to take His time. The free man is patient. [Gamaliel] was a Jew, not a Christian, and he had not recognized Jesus as the Savior. But he was a free man. He thought things out and offered his ideas to others who accepted them. Freedom is not impatient.”

The Pope said Pilate also reasoned well with a clear mind, realizing that Jesus was innocent. But, not being free, he could not overcome his desire for a promotion. “He lacked the courage of freedom because he was a slave to his career, ambition, and success,” the Pope said.

Pope Francis participates in the launch of Synod on Amazon
12 April 2018, 18:41

Pope Francis participates in a meeting launching the work for the Pre-Synod phase of the special Synod of Bishops of the Amazon Region.

Eighteen members of the Synodal Council and thirteen experts on the Amazon met on the morning of 12 April. Pope Francis participated in and presided over this meeting.

Cardinal Lorenzo Baldisseri, Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops, defined the Amazon as a garden containing immense wealth and natural resources--the mother land of the indigenous peoples--with their own history and unmistakable features. That land is threatened by the boundless ambitions and impatience to dominate on the part of the powerful.

Father Justine Rezende, from the Tuiuca tribe, was the only Amazonian present.

In his introduction addressed to Pope Francis and to the other members of the Pre-Synod meeting, he spoke of his joy of being one of the participants, of being before the Pope for the first time, and of the presence of the Church in the midst of his people.

ROME - The three main protagonists in denouncing Chile’s sex abuse scandal will meet with Pope Francis on April 28-29 and will stay as his guests at the Vatican hotel where he lives, one of the men told The Associated Press.

Juan Carlos Cruz, a survivor of Chile’s most famous predator priest, said he and his colleagues had agreed to Francis’s invitation to come to Rome so the pope could personally apologize for having discredited them during his recent trip to Chile.

Developing a “catholic” vision of unity
14 April 2018, 13:34

Pope Francis greets the President of Villanova University, Peter M. Donohue, OSA  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis on Saturday meets with the President and Trustees of Villanova University, telling them the University must address contemporary ethical and cultural challenges.
By Christopher Wells

The President and Trustees of Villanova University, who are holding their spring meeting in Rome, were received by Pope Francis in a special audience on Saturday.

Villanova, located just outside of the American city of Philadelphia, was founded by the Order of Saint Augustine in 1842. Recalling the school’s Augustinian heritage, Pope Francis said the University was founded “to preserve and pass on the richness of the Catholic tradition to new generations of students, who like the young Augustine, seek true meaning and value in the true life.” To be faithful to that mission, he said, the University must address “the ethical and cultural challenges” of the modern world.

A universal vision of unity

Pope Francis identified “the development of a universal, ‘catholic’ vision of the unity of our human family, and a commitment to the practical solidarity needed to combat the grave inequalities and injustices that mark today’s world,” as a particularly “urgent aspect of this educational task.”

An Indian among 8 new Venerable Servants of God
14 April 2018, 16:59

Among the new Venerables are 3 priests and 5 nuns: an Indian, a Spanish, a Portuguese, a Canadian and 4 Italians

Pope Francis on Saturday cleared the way for 8 Servants of God, including and Indian, taking them a step closer to sainthood.

On April 14, the Holy Father Francis received Cardinal Angelo Amato, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints and authorized the promulgation of the decrees recognizing the heroic virtues of 8 Servants of God who will now have the title Venerable Servant of God or simply Venerable

Among them is Father Varghese Payapilly, an Indian diocesan priest, founder of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Destitute.   He was born into a rich family in Konthuruthy (India) on August 8, 1876 and died of typhoid in Ernakulam on October 5, 1929.

After a disastrous flood in 1924, Fr. Varghese transformed his parish into a centre for the homeless. This experience led him to found a religious congregation of Sisters of the Destitute  on 19 March, 1927.  The nuns today runs numerous homes for street children, abandoned elderly people, beggars, terminally ill people with cancer and AIDS, and physically and mentally disabled people.  The order also has centres  for work activities, hospitals, dispensaries, palliative care centres, kindergartens and schools.

The other new Venerable Servants of God are:

The Vatican and the Knights of Malta

http://www.thetablet.co.uk/news/8897/new-revelations-as-knights-of-malta-square-up-to-choose-new-leader

14 April 2018 | by Christopher Lamb in Rome
New revelations as Knights of Malta square up to choose new leader

Did Cardinal Burke want the Knights of Malta to be a platform to promote his traditionalist vision of Catholicism?

New details have emerged about the public battle between Pope Francis and the Knights of Malta which shine a light on the ongoing struggle between reformers and traditionalists inside the Church.

A crisis in the order was sparked when Albrecht von Boeselager, the Grand Chancellor, was dismissed from his post by the knights' former Grand Master, Fra’ Matthew Festing, ostensibly because it was discovered that he had allowed condoms to be distributed as part of the order's humanitarian work.

But The Tablet can report that von Boeselager, later reinstated, was viewed as an obstacle to the vision that the order’s patron Cardinal Raymond Burke had for the knights, while the German Grand Chancellor’s reform-minded approach to the order’s governance clashed with that of Fra’ Matthew.

The former Grand Master has revealed he consulted closely with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, including its former Prefect Cardinal Gerhard Muller, before going ahead with the dismissal of von Boeselager as his Prime Minister-equivalent. “I didn’t do all this on my own bat,” Fra’ Matthew told The Tablet during a telephone call.

But as Fra’ Matthew was consulting Cardinal Burke and the Vatican’s doctrinal congregation, the Pope wrote to the cardinal saying that while that condoms must not be distributed the internal disagreements in the order should be resolved through dialogue.
