Pope at Angelus: ‘Eucharist burns away selfish attitudes’
03 June 2018, 13:05

Pope Francis at the Angelus prayer
At the Sunday Angelus address, Pope Francis reflects on the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, or Corpus Christi, saying the Eucharist burns away our selfish attitudes and unites us perfectly to Jesus.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis at the Sunday Angelus said the feast of Corpus Christi is “a mystery of being drawn to Christ and transformed in Him.”

“By nourishing ourselves with the Body and Blood of Christ,” he said, “we are assimilated to Him, and we receive His love, not to guard it jealously, but rather to share it with others.”

Eucharistic processions

Pope Francis also mentioned the many Eucharistic processions that traditionally take place on Corpus Christi Sunday.

“They are an eloquent sign of the fact that Jesus, who died and rose, continues to walk the paths of this world and that he joins us and guides our path,” he said.

The Holy Father said he would lead celebrate Mass and lead procession in the Roman suburb of Ostia later in the day, “as Blessed Pope Paul VI did 50 years ago”.

Chilean priests say they’re ‘trusting,’ ‘hopeful’ after meeting Pope

ROME- After meeting with Pope Francis for more than four hours, a second group of Chilean sex abuse victims, joined by priests who’ve supported them for 20 years, said they’re “trustful and hopeful” about reforms he’s begun in their Church, where new allegations of clerical sexual abuse arise virtually every day.

Francis met the nine Chileans, two of them laity, on Saturday. Of the seven priests, five are victims of the country’s most notorious pedophile priest, Father Fernando Karadima. It hasn’t been announced which ones in the group are victims of sexual abuse versus abuses of power and conscience.

Pope at Mass on Corpus Christi: ‘Overcome silent collusion'
03 June 2018, 19:32

Roman parish of Our Lady of Bonaria in Ostia
In his homily at Mass on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, Pope Francis invited the people of the Roman suburb of Ostia to overcome the walls of indifference and silent collusion.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis celebrated the Solemnity of Corpus Christi in the Roman sea-side suburb of Ostia on Sunday, becoming the first Pope since 1981 to lead the Eucharistic procession in a location other than the now-traditional tract from St. John Lateran to St. Mary Major.

It comes as part of his visits to the parish communities of the Diocese of Rome.

Pope tells journalists to serve the truth, revive hope and not ignore the peripheries
04 June 2018, 14:25

Pope Francis meeting the delegation from the Bagio Agnes International Journalism Prize  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis on Monday met in the Vatican a delegation from the “Biagio Agnes” International Journalism Prize of Italy during which he urged journalists to serve the truth, revive hope and not to ignore the peripheries.
By Robin Gomes

Meeting the 70-member delegation of the Biagio Agnes International Journalism Prize, ahead of this year’s awards in Sorrento June 22-24, the Pope said that theirs is a demanding job in an age marked by “digital convergence” and “media transformation.”    During his journeys and other meeting, the Pope said he notes classic televisions and traditional radios alongside young people making news and interviews with mobile phones, and urged the foundation to continue being “educators of the new generations.”[ Audio Embed Listen to our report]

In this task, Pope Francis particularly urged them to be mindful of the peripheries, the truth and hope.

Pope to Lutherans: 'may the Holy Spirit unite what is still divided'
04 June 2018, 12:45

Pope Francis receives in audience a Delegation of the German Evangelical Lutheran Church
Pope Francis urged members of the German Lutheran Church, whom he received in the Vatican, to continue walking the path to unity.
By Linda Bordoni

Receiving a Delegation of the German Evangelical Lutheran Church in audience, Pope Francis on Monday recalled his positive 2016 visit to Lund in Sweden to mark the Common Commemoration of the Reformation.

Pointing out that “for the wounds of the past” the event could have provoked controversy and hatred, he said that instead it took place in a spirit of fraternal communion highlighting the fact that the last fifty years have been characterized by a “growing communion”.

“Thanks to the work of the Spirit, fraternal meetings, gestures based on the logic of the Gospel rather than human strategies, and through the official Lutheran-Catholic dialogue, it has been possible to overcome old prejudices on both sides” he said.

Pope Francis Tells Cdl. Marx Not to Publish the Intercommunion Handout
June 4, 2018

On 25 May, Archbishop Luis Ladaria, the head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), wrote a letter to Cardinal Reinhard Marx and the German bishops. He told the German bishops’ conference not to publish their pastoral handout allowing some Protestant spouses of Catholics to receive Holy Communion under certain conditions.

Today, the Austrian Catholic website Kath.net reported on this new CDF letter, which had been sent on 25 May and addressed to Cardinal Marx, with copies sent to Cardinal Rainer Woelki, Bishop Felix Glenn, Bishop Voderholzer, and two other German bishops.

Onepeterfive obtained a copy of that letter. Archbishop Ladaria now relates to Cardinal Marx that he has spoken “extensively” on two occasions (on 11 and 24 May) with Pope Francis about the 3 May meeting that took place in Rome between Archbishop Ladaria and a German delegation under Cardinal Marx. The reason for that 3 May meeting was the ongoing conflict concerning the 20 February pastoral intercommunion handout. The following points are given to the German bishops “with explicit approval of the pope,” as Ladaria explains it. Here is the most important quote from the letter:

Our conversation on 3 May 2018 made it clear that the text of the [German pastoral] handout raises a set of questions which are of eminent importance. The Holy Father therefore has come to the conclusion that this document is not ripe for publication.

Francis Blocks the Document by the German Bishops in Favor of Intercommunion. The Complete Text of the Letter

In receiving this morning, Monday June 4, a delegation of the German Lutheran Evangelical Church, Pope Francis cautioned against the “eagerness to run ahead” and was at pains to say that “some issues, I think of the Church, the Eucharist and the ecclesial ministry, deserve detailed and thoroughly shared reflection.”

In these words there can be glimpsed a veiled allusion to the controversy, which has exploded among the Catholic bishops of Germany, of whether or not to admit Protestant spouses as well to Eucharistic communion.

But that’s not all. Because this same morning the German bishops received a letter from newly created cardinal Luis Francisco Ladaria Ferrer (in the photo), prefect of the congregation for the doctrine of the faith, which establishes firm guidelines on this very question.

The letter is reproduced in its entirety further below, translated from the original German. It bears the date of May 25. And the day before, on May 24, Francis had met with Ladaria to compose the definitive draft.

Francis Blocks the Document by the German Bishops in Favor of Intercommunion. The Complete Text of the Letter

POSTSCRIPT – In the evening Cardinal Marx released the following declaration:

"The letter of the prefect of the congregation for the doctrine of the faith of May 25, 2018 was received this evening, June 4, 2018, by the president of the German episcopal conference, Cardinal Reinhard Marx. In the conversation of May 3, 2018 in Rome the participating bishops were told that they would have to find 'a unanimous solution if possible, in a spirit of ecclesial communion.' The president is therefore surprised that this letter should have arrived from Rome even before this shared solution has been found. The president sees expressed in the letter the necessity for further conversations within the German episcopal conference, first of all in the permanent council and in the plenary assembly in the autumn, but also with the respective Roman dicasteries and with the Holy Father himself."

Pope: Communion for Protestants married to Catholics requires further study
05 June 2018, 11:28

The Eucharist
A letter from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith sheds light on Pope Francis’ position regarding the Eucharist in inter-communion marriages. The issue has been raised by the German Catholic Bishops’ Conference and regards an ecumenical theme that concerns the Universal Church.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis has invited German bishops to await legislation that is applicable to the whole universal Church on the delicate question of allowing Protestants who are married to Catholics to receive Communion in Catholic Churches.

His request came in a letter sent on his behalf by the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Archbishop Luis Ladaria, to the President of the German Episcopal Conference, Cardinal Reinhard Marx.

The text highlights the need to carefully evaluate the repercussions and impact that any decision may have on the balances achieved in ecumenical dialogue.

Pope at General Audience: ‘we are called to be gifts for others’

Pope Francis dedicated his catechesis on Wednesday to the Sacrament of Confirmation, a gift – he said – that in turn enables us to become a gift for others.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis urged Christians who receive the many gifts of the Holy Spirit to give back to others, and not to keep those gifts only for themselves “as if the soul were a store-room”.

Addressing the pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the Wednesday General Audience, the Pope continued in his series of reflections dedicated to the Sacrament of Confirmation, calling on all faithful to never stop sharing the Holy Spirit’s gifts for the good of all.

Pope Francis: 'memory and hope go hand in hand'
07 June 2018, 13:58

Pope Francis celebrates Mass at Casa Santa Marta  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis has encouraged Christians to think back to their encounters with Jesus, to nurture memories of those who were the first to transmit to them the faith, and to remember the law of love.
By Linda Bordoni

Speaking during the homily on Thursday at morning Mass at the Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis said that in order to be able to go forward in Christian life, we must think back to and cherish our first encounters with Jesus, and remember those who transmitted the faith to us.

Christian memory is the salt of life

Drawing inspiration from the liturgical reading of the day in which St. Paul exhorts Timothy to “remember Jesus Christ”, the Pope said Christian memory is the salt of life.

Delving into your memory to relive your first meetings with the Lord is necessary in order “to find strength and be able to continue walking forward” he said, pointing out that “Christian memory is always an encounter with Jesus Christ”.

“Christian memory is like the salt of life. Without memory we cannot go on. When we encounter ‘forgetful’ Christians, we can immediately see that they have lost the flavour of Christian life and have ended up being people who obey the Commandments without spirituality”.

Pope: ‘God’s love has no need for words but for concrete gestures'

Pope Francis celebrates Mass at Casa Santa Marta  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis on Friday reflected on how God’s love has no limits. Speaking during the homily at morning Mass, he said His greatness is manifested in small things and tenderness.
By Linda Bordoni

Marking the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus during Mass at the Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis remarked on how it could be said that the festivity celebrates God's love.

God is the first to love

“It is not us who first loved God,” it's the other way around: “it is He who loved us first” he said.

The Pope said the prophets used the symbol of the almond blossom to explain this reality highlighting the fact that the almond blossom is the first to bloom in spring.

“God is like that: he is always first. He's the first to wait for us, the first to love us, the first to help us” he said.

08 June 2018, 15:24

A consistory of cardinals with Pope Francis in the Vatican.
The Office for the Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff on Friday announced the programme of Pope Francis for June 28 and 29 June.

Two major events are scheduled in the agenda of Pope Francis at the end of this month: the Ordinary Public Consistory of Cardinals scheduled on June 28, and Holy Mass on the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul the following day.

The Consistory

As announced by Pope Francis during his “Regina Coeli” prayer at midday on Sunday, May 20, the Ordinary Public Consistory for the creation of 14 new cardinals will be held in the Vatican on June 28.

The evening ceremony in St. Peter’s Basilica will include the imposition of the cardinal’s red hat, the consignment of the ring and the assignment of the Title or Diaconate.

Courtesy visits to felicitate the new cardinals are scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. the same day.

Vatican releases Pan-Amazonia Synod preparatory document
08 June 2018, 12:47

The Preparatory Document for the 2019 Pan-Amazonian Synod, released on Friday in the Vatican, calls for “a Church with an Amazonian face” that seeks “a model of alternative, integral, and solidarity-based development, grounded on an ethical code that includes responsibility for an authentic, natural, and human ecology.”
By Devin Watkins

Preparations are in full swing for the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in the Amazon Basin, set to take place in October 2019, which will reflect on the theme: “New Paths for the Church and for an Integral Ecology”.

The Vatican released the Preparatory Document for the event on Friday at a press conference.

“Listening to indigenous peoples and to all the communities living in the Amazonia… is of vital importance for the universal Church.”

The Pan-Amazonian Synod, it says, transcends “the strictly ecclesial-Amazonian sphere, because [it] focuses on the universal Church, as well as on the future of the entire planet.”

Three-part message

Divided into three parts, the Document is an invitation for the Church to “see” the identity and cries of the Amazon Basin, to “discern” a path towards a pastoral and ecological conversion, and to “act” or walk along new paths for a Church with an Amazonian face.

It also provides a questionnaire for the region’s bishops to share their pastoral and ecological concerns ahead of the Synod.

Pope to Oil Executives: Time for Clean Alternatives
June 09, 2018 20:34

Pope Francis spoke June 9, 2018, to some 40 participants in the Symposium for Directors of the main companies in the oil and natural gas sector, and of other energy-related businesses. If any of those attending had not read Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’: On the Care for Our Common Home, they likely will be reading a copy on the plane ride home.

They got the executive summary for oil companies in the Pope’s June 9 address: we’re all in this together and we need to clean up our act. The world needs more energy and we have to do it in a way that protects the environment and all people.

“It is not right to sate that ‘thirst’ by adding to other people’s physical thirst for water, their poverty or their social exclusion,” the Pope said. “The need for greater and more readily available supplies of energy to operate machinery cannot be met at the cost of polluting the air we breathe. The need to expand spaces for human activities cannot be met in ways that would seriously endanger our own existence or that of other living species on earth.

“It is a “false notion that an infinite quantity of energy and resources are available, that it is possible to renew them quickly, and that the negative effects of the exploitation of the natural order can be easily absorbed” (Laudato Si’, 106).”
