Pope at Angelus: Two characteristics of missionary disciples
15 July 2018, 12:40

Angelus by Pope Francis in St. Peter's square  (ANSA)
Pope Francis spoke about two characteristics of missionary discipleship during the Angelus on Sunday: mission has a centre; mission has a face
By Christopher Wells

At the Angelus on Sunday, Pope Francis focused once again on the idea of missionary discipleship, taking the day’s Gospel as his starting point. In the Gospel reading, Jesus, after calling the disciples individually by name, goes on to send them out ahead of Him “two-by-two.” This, the Pope said, “is a kind of ‘internship’” in anticipation of their mission following the Resurrection.

Pope Francis said missionary discipleship, the missionary “style,” can be summarized in two points: “mission” has a centre; and it has a “face.”

The Church is without a camerlengo

Cardianl Jean-Louis Tauran, who was camerlengo from December 2014 until his July 5, 2018 death. Credit: Bohumil Petrik/CNA.
Vatican City, Jul 17, 2018 / 12:53 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- With the July 5 death of Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, the office of camerlengo is now vacant. A sensitive position, above all in the period between the death of a pope and the election of his successor, the Church awaits Pope Francis’ nomination of a new camerlengo.

The camerlengo is one of two head officials of the Roman Curia who do not lose their office while the papacy is vacant. The camerlengo administers Church finances and property during the interregnum.

However, Francis could choose to do as did Ven. Pius XII in 1941 and not nominate a new camerlengo. At the death of Cardinal Lorenzo Lauri, Ven. Pius XII did not nominate a successor, and at his death in 1958, the cardinals elected, at the beginning of the sede vacante, Cardinal Benedetto Aloisi Masella.

The position of the camerlengo is regulated by the apostolic constitutions Pastor bonus and Universi dominici gregis.

Paragraph 17 of Universi dominici gregis establishes that “the Camerlengo of Holy Roman Church must officially ascertain the Pope’s death and “must also place seals on the Pope’s study and bedroom”, and later “the entire papal apartment.”

Nicaragua: Nuncio Appeals for Peace in Pope’s Name
Three-month Reign of Violence Claims Hundreds of Lives
July 18, 2018 16:40

Archbishop Waldemar Stanisław Sommertag, Apostolic Nuncio in Nicaragua, appealed July 17, 2018, for peace in the beleaguered country where more than 360 have died in violence in the past three months.

“I wish to express, on behalf of the Holy Father and the Holy See, my deep concern for the grave situation the country is facing. Obviously, it is unacceptable to think that the dead and victims of violence can solve the political crisis and guarantee a future of peace and prosperity in Nicaragua,” he was quoted in Vatican News.

DUBLIN, Ireland - The internationally acclaimed Irish dance troupe Riverdance will be among those performing for Pope Francis at the August World Meeting of Families in Dublin, organizers said July 19.

The group - which has been seen by some 25 million people worldwide - will be one of the main acts at a Festival of Families Aug. 25 before an expected 80,000 people at Croke Park stadium in Dublin.

Brenda Drumm, spokeswoman for the World Meeting of Families, said she expects people from 116 countries to participate in the event, at which the pope will preside. Francis also will hear testimony from families from India, Iraq, Ireland and Burkina Faso on topics as diverse as the effects of technology on family life and the value of families forgiving one another.

The Festival of Families will be a two-hour spectacle of music, dance and worship and is choreographed as a celebration of family life. It is billed as one of the highlights of the meeting.

As well as prominent performers like Daniel O’Donnell and Nathan Carter, the cast for the Festival of Families will include an orchestra of more than 50 musicians; more than 700 Irish Sean Nos and contemporary dancers, including 500 from Irish dance schools across the country; a 1,000-member choir; 100 community groups; and 300 flag bearers.

An auxiliary bishop serving a top advisor to Pope Francis has resigned from office in Honduras after allegations that he sexually abused seminarians.

Bishop Juan José Pineda Fasquelle served under Cardinal Oscar Andrés Rodríguez Maradiaga in the Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa, the Honduran capital
.

The cardinal is the coordinator of the C9 Council of Cardinals which advises the pope on the reform of the Vatican curia and the governance of the Church, and he is considered one of Francis’s closest confidantes.

The July 20 statement from the Vatican press office simply stated that Francis had accepted the resignation of Pineda Fasquelle, without giving a reason. However, the bishop is only 57, well below the retirement age for bishops, which is 75.

In March, the National Catholic Register reported that two seminarians had accused Pineda Fasquelle of attempting to have unwanted sexual relations with them.

The written testimony was submitted to a Vatican-appointed official sent to investigate financial irregularities in the archdiocese.

Pope’s envoy to Medjugorje begins his ministry
21 July 2018, 11:12

St James Parish, Medjugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Archbishop Henryk Hoser, appointed by Pope Francis as Apostolic Visitor to St James Parish in Medjugorje, begins his assignment on Sunday.
By Sr Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp

Archbishop Henryk Hoser, retired Archbishop of Warsaw-Prague in Poland, begins his mandate on Sunday as Apostolic Visitor to St James Parish in Medjugorje. He will inaugurate his ministry with solemn Mass in the evening and has invited all of the faithful and pilgrims present to participate.

First mandate

Archbishop Hoser was first appointed by Pope Francis as a special envoy from the Holy See to St James Parish on 11 February 2017. At that time the Holy See’s Press Office stated that the mission entrusted to the then Archbishop of Warsaw-Prague “has the aim of acquiring a deeper knowledge of the pastoral situation there and above all, of the needs of the faithful who go there in pilgrimage, and on the basis of this, to suggest possible pastoral initiatives for the future. The mission will therefore have an exclusively pastoral character.” The statement said that his mandate was expected to conclude by the end of summer 2017.

The same day the Press Office released this statement, Director Greg Burke underlined that “the mission of the Special Envoy is a sign of the Holy Father’s attention toward the pilgrims. The scope is not inquisitorial, but strictly pastoral. The Envoy will not enter into questions regarding the Marian apparitions, which are the competence of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He will be in contact with the diocesan bishop, the Franciscan Friars Minor – to whom the parish of Medjugorje is entrusted – and with the faithful of the area.” And he concluded, “It is a mission for the pilgrims, not against anyone”.

Pope at Angelus: Jesus sees our most hidden needs
22 July 2018, 12:10

Pope greets the faithful gathered in St Peter's Square before reciting the Angelus
Reflecting on this week’s Gospel before the Angelus on Sunday, Pope Francis says that Jesus sees us with the eyes of the heart, becoming the model of love and service.
By Sean-Patrick Lovett

St Mark’s Gospel describes the Apostles returning from their first mission, an experience that “must have been exciting, but tiring too”, said Pope Francis. Which is why Jesus tells them to: “Come away to some lonely place all by yourselves and rest for a while”. Unfortunately, the crowd gets there before the disciples and Jesus arrive.

SEATTLE, Washington — Archbishop Raymond G. Hunthausen, who attended the Second Vatican Council and became a pioneer in the ecumenical movement and later offered a pacifist voice against war and the production of nuclear weapons, died July 22 at his home in Helena, Montana.

The 96-year-old retired archbishop of Seattle was with family when he died, according to a press release from the Archdiocese of Seattle. Funeral arrangements were pending July 23.

Hunthausen had fans and critics alike, who took varying views of his often-controversial stances on nuclear disarmament, broader roles for women in the Church and outreach ministry to gays and lesbians.

He was the last living American bishop who participated in all four sessions of the council, which convened from 1962 to 1965. He attended the first session of the council within weeks of his Aug. 30, 1962, episcopal ordination as bishop of Helena and was the youngest American prelate.

NEW YORK - Cardinal Sean O’Malley, who serves as the pope’s point man for sex abuse reform, is calling for decisive action following recent allegations of sexual abuse against Cardinal Theodore McCarrick.

Last month, the Archdiocese of New York announced that an archdiocesan review board had investigated and deemed credible allegations that McCarrick, the retired archbishop of Washington, had molested an alter boy while he was a young priest in New York.

Since then, both the New York Times and the Washington Post have reported on multiples cases of abuse against McCarrick spanning decades.

In a statement released on Tuesday, O’Malley - who was brought in to lead the archdiocese of Boston following the resignation of Cardinal Bernard Law after devastating revelations of abuse cover-up - said that adjudication of these new cases must be handled “swiftly and decisively.”

Over the past two decades, O’Malley has been widely seen as the leading reformer in the U.S. Church, calling for greater accountability and transparency in how the Church handles claims of clerical sex abuse.

In the past week, however, O’Malley was accused by a New York City-based priest, Father Boniface Ramsey, of brushing aside a letter sent to him in 2015 warning him about McCarrick.

O’Malley, who serves on the pope’s C9 council of advisors and is widely viewed as his closest confidant in the U.S. Church hierarchy, said he intends to address the situation with the pope.

Humanae Vitae at 50: Help people to live out the teaching of Pope Paul VI, says Commission head

Today marks half a century since Paul VI released one of the most controversial encyclicals of recent times

The Church should stop arguing over the rights and wrongs of artificial contraception but instead find ways to help people live out the teaching of Pope Paul VI, according to the leader of a commission set up by Pope Francis to study Humanae Vitae.

Mgr Gilfredo Marengo, who co-ordinated a research group examining material in the Vatican secret archives on the compiling of Paul VI’s controversial encyclical, said there was an urgent need for pastoral work because “objectively what Humanae Vitae says” is “very distant” to many people.

“Today we have a difficulty in accompanying families pastorally on the path marked out by Humanae Vitae. Perhaps if all those years we had invested more energy on this pastoral path instead of debating, in a strict way, if Humanae Vitae is right or Humanae Vitae is wrong, maybe today we would be in a better place,” Mgr Marengo said.

Today marks exactly half a century since Paul VI released one of the most controversial encyclicals of recent times, re-affirming the Church’s opposition to artificial contraception. Its release was met with fierce criticism from inside the Church and, fifty years on, the evidence suggests it is a teaching largely ignored by Catholic laity.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- The last time a pope visited Ireland, the Constitution prohibited divorce, gay marriages were unthinkable, abortion was illegal and physical and sexual abuse at the hands of nuns and priests was a carefully hidden secret.

That has all changed in the almost four decades since St. John Paul II visited the country in 1979.

Pope Francis will visit Dublin and Knock Aug. 25-26, mainly for the World Meeting of Families. But he also will meet Irish government leaders and is expected to meet with survivors of abuse.

"Ireland is a country that has suffered tremendously, and suffered at the hands of the church, also -- so many cases of abuse: sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse," said Cardinal Kevin J. Farrell, the Irish-born prefect of the Dicastery for Laity, the Family and Life, which helped organize the World Meeting of Families.
