Pope Francis at Mass: Bishops must pray to overcome 'Great Accuser’
11 September 2018, 12:58

Pope Francis preaches at Mass in the Casa Santa Marta  (Vatican Media)
At Mass in the Casa Santa Marta on Tuesday, Pope Francis invites bishops to overcome the "Great Accuser", who seeks to create scandal, through prayer, humility, and nearness to God’s people.

In his homily at Mass on Tuesday morning, Pope Francis said it seems the "Great Accuser" is attacking the bishops of the Catholic Church to create scandal.

The Pope invited the bishops to remember three things in these troubled times: their strength lies in being men of prayer; they should have the humility to remember they are chosen by God; and they need to remain close to the people.

He reflected on the day’s Gospel (Lk 6:12-19), in which Jesus spends the night in prayer before choosing the Twelve Apostles, whom the Pope called “the first bishops”.

'Great Accuser' seeks to scandalize

Finally, Pope Francis said bishops need these three attitudes to face the scandal whipped up by the "Great Accuser".

“In these times, it seems like the 'Great Accuser' has been unchained and is attacking bishops. True, we are all sinners, we bishops. He tries to uncover the sins, so they are visible in order to scandalize the people. The 'Great Accuser', as he himself says to God in the first chapter of the Book of Job, 'roams the earth looking for someone to accuse'. A bishop’s strength against the 'Great Accuser' is prayer, that of Jesus and his own, and the humility of being chosen and remaining close to the people of God, without seeking an aristocratic life that removes this unction. Let us pray, today, for our bishops: for me, for those who are here, and for all the bishops throughout the world.”

Remembering 9/11 with the Popes
11 September 2018, 10:51

In the face of the barbaric terrorism that took place on 9/11, Pope St. John Paul II, Pope emeritus Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis all remind the world to pursue the path of peace and love, which overcomes all forms of hatred and violence.
By Devin Watkins

On the 17th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center in New York, we step back in time to remember the words and actions of three Popes when faced with the horrors of 9/11.

Pope St. John Paul II: 2001

It was a Tuesday. Pope John Paul II watched events unfold live on television. His press secretary later recounted how JPII sought to get in contact with US President George W. Bush by telephone to express his closeness to the American people. But the president was unreachable and in a secure location for security reasons. The Pope sent a telegram instead, decrying the “inhumane attacks” and assuring his prayers in those trying times.

The next day was a Wednesday, and Pope John Paul II held the weekly General Audience under the strain of interior suffering. 9/11, he said, “was a dark day in human history, a terrible attack on human dignity.” He added: “The heart of man is an abyss whence, at times, emerge acts of unspeakable ferocity.”

Cardinal DiNardo and USCCB officials to meet with Pope Francis

Washington D.C., Sep 11, 2018 / 12:33 pm (CNA).- The director of the Vatican’s press office has confirmed that Pope Francis will meet with the president of the U.S. bishops’ conference Thursday, along with the conference’s vice-president, general secretary, and the president of the pope’s commission on child protection. The meeting is expected to address the clerical sexual abuse crisis that has roiled the Church in the U.S. for several months.

In a short statement released Sept. 11, Greg Burke, director of the Holy See’s press office, said that Francis would meet Sept. 13 with Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, USCCB president, along with Archbishop Jose Gomez, conference vice-president, and Monsignor Brian Bransfield, the general secretary of the conference. Also in attendance will be Cardinal Sean O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston, and the president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors.

DiNardo first called for a meeting with Francis in mid-August.

In an Aug. 16 statement, DiNardo said he would present to the Holy See a USCCB plan to address the “moral catastrophe” of sexual abuse. That plan calls for a Vatican investigation into “questions surrounding Archbishop McCarrick,” new avenues for reporting misconduct, and new procedures to address complaints against bishops.

Wuerl to meet with Pope Francis to discuss resignation

Washington D.C., Sep 11, 2018 / 05:19 pm (ACI Prensa).- The Archbishop of Washington told priests Tuesday that he intends to meet with Pope Francis soon to discuss his resignation from office.

In a letter sent to priests of the Archdiocese of Washington Sept. 11, Cardinal Donald Wuerl wrote that a decision about his future role in the archdiocese is “an essential aspect so that this archdiocesan Church we all love can move forward.

“I intend, in the very near future, to go to Rome to meet with our Holy Father about the resignation I presented nearly three years ago, November 12, 2015.”

Wuerl presented his resignation to the pope in 2015 upon turning 75, the age at which diocesan bishops are requested to submit letters of resignation to the pope.

Calls for Pope Francis to accept Wuerl’s resignation have been frequent in recent months. In June, Wuerl’s predecessor in Washington, Archbishop Theodore McCarrick, was publicly accused of serially sexually abusing a teenage boy in the 1970s. As further accusations were made that McCarrick sexually coerced and assaulted seminarians for decades, questions were raised about whether Wuerl knew about McCarrick’s apparent sexual misconduct.

After the Aug. 14 release of a report from a grand jury in Pennsylvania, calls for Wuerl to be replaced intensified. That report suggested that Wuerl had been negligent in the supervision of priests accused of sexually abusing minors while he was Bishop of Pittsburgh, in one case permitting a priest accused of sexual abuse to transfer from ministry in one diocese to another, and signing off on the priest’s suitability for ministry.

Pope at Audience: the worst kind of slavery is that of one's ego
12 September 2018, 10:48

Pope Francis on Wednesday continued his series of catecheses dedicated to the Commandments. Speaking during the General Audience he reflected on the Third Commandment which reminds us to keep holy the Lord’s Day.
By Linda Bordoni

"God’s love renders us free” Pope Francis said to the crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square, even when in prison, even when we are weak or limited by circumstances.

Only the love given to us by Jesus can break the chains of slavery to sin, especially that of “one's own ego”.

Reflecting on the third Commandment that is dedicated to the day of rest, the Pope quoted from the Book of Deuteronomy in which the Third Word “commemorates the end of slavery” and said “it is a day in which the slave must rest like the master, to celebrate the memory of Israel’s liberation from the slavery of Egypt”.

Pope Francis: 'I hope to visit Japan next year'
12 September 2018, 10:45

Pope Francis meets members of the Tensho Kenoh Shisetsu Kenshoukai Association from Japan  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis meets delegates of the Tensho Kenoho Shisetsu Kenshokai Association before the weekly General Audience and expresses his wish to visit Japan next year.

This Japanese Association is known for promoting projects of culture and solidarity and on Wednesday Pope Francis met the group in the Paul the VI complex, reminding them of another long journey to meet a Pope.

The Pontiff recalled the visit more than 400 years ago, in 1585, when four young Japanese arrived in Rome, accompanied by some Jesuit missionaries, to visit the Pope, who was then Gregory XIII.

The Pope pointed out that it was the first time that a group of representatives from Japan had come to Europe and he described it as an historic meeting between two great cultures and spiritual traditions and deserved to be remembered.

Pope Francis convokes world-wide meeting of bishops on abuse crisis
By Hannah Brockhaus

Vatican City, Sep 12, 2018 / 06:03 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis has called for all the presidents of the Catholic bishops’ conferences of the world to meet at the Vatican in February to discuss the issue of sexual abuse of minors.

A statement from the pope’s cardinal advisory board Sept. 12 said, “The Holy Father Francis, hearing the Council of Cardinals, decided to convene a meeting with the Presidents of the Bishops Conferences of the Catholic Church on the theme of ‘protection of minors.’”

The summit will take place at the Vatican Feb. 21-24, 2019.

In a press briefing Wednesday, Holy See spokesperson Paloma García Ovejero, said the February meeting would be on the "prevention of abuse of minors and vulnerable adults."

According to the website GCatholic, there are 114 Conferences of Bishops and 21 eastern-rite Patriarchal Synods, Councils of Churches, and Assemblies of Ordinaries.

26th Council of Cardinal Concludes
‘C9’ Continued Discussions on Curia Reform
September 12, 2018 14:51•Deborah Castellano Lubov

Paloma Garcia Ovejero, Vice-Director of the Holy See Press Office, has reiterated that Pope Francis and the Council of Cardinals are continuing to discuss curial reform.

During a briefing held this afternoon in the Holy See Press Office, the Vatican spokesman informed journalists about the 26th Session of the “Council of Cardinals,” often called the “C9,” which began Monday and ended this morning at 10:30 a.m. in the Vatican.

According to the statement released by the Holy See Press Office, the majority of the Council’s work was dedicated to the final adjustments to the draft of the new Apostolic Constitution of the Roman Curia, provisionally entitled Praedicate evangelium.

The Council of Cardinals has already submitted to the Holy Father the provisional text which will however undergo stylistic revision and a canonistic review.

As already communicated on Monday, during the first session of this 26th meeting, the Vatican spokesman noted, the Council of Cardinals asked the Pope to reflect on the work, structure and composition of the Council itself, also taking into consideration the advanced age of some members.

All those present expressed their satisfaction at the good outcome of the Ninth World Meeting of Families, held in Dublin, and congratulated Cardinal Kevin J. Farrell and the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life, which along with Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, organized the event.

Cardinal Seán Patrick O’Malley, as usual, gave an update on the work of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors

“Once again,” Paloma Garcia Ovejero noted, “the Cardinals expressed their full solidarity with Pope Francis with regard to the events of recent weeks.”

She also announced: “The Holy Father, after hearing the Council of Cardinals, convened a meeting with the presidents of the Episcopal Conferences of all the world to speak about the prevention of abuse of minors and vulnerable adults.” This was published in a subsequent statement of the council.

The next meeting of the Council of Cardinals will take place on December 10-12, 2018.

Pope Francis at Mass: Mercy is the Christian "style"
13 September 2018, 12:08

Pope Francis celebrates Mass at the Casa Santa Marta  (Vatican Media)
In the chapel at the Casa Santa Marta, the Pope celebrates the Mass and recalls that Christians do not follow the “spirit of the world,” but live the “folly of the Cross.”
By Barbara Castelli

“Being Christian is not easy,” but makes us “happy”: the path pointed out to us by the heavenly Father is that of “mercy” and of “interior peace.” Beginning from the day’s Gospel from St Luke (6:27-38), Pope Francis once again clarified the distinctive traits of the “Christian style.” The Pope said that the Lord always indicates to us what the “life of the disciple” must be. He does so, for example, through the Beatitudes or the Works of Mercy.

Going against the logic of the world

In a particular way, the day’s liturgy focuses on “four details for living the Christian life”: “love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” In his homily, Pope Francis said that Christians should never enter “into gossiping,” or “into the logic of insults,” which only cause “war,” but to always find time “to pray for annoying people”:

This is the Christian style, this is the manner of Christian living. But if I do not do these four things? Loving enemies, doing good to those who hate me, blessing those who curse me, and praying for those who mistreat me, am I not a Christian? Yes, you are a Christian because you have received Baptism, but you are not living like a Christian. You are living like a pagan, with the spirit of worldliness.

Pope to Bishops: Never has God been more silenced
13 September 2018, 13:31

Pope addresses new Bishops  (ANSA)
Pope Francis addresses 130 new Bishops attending a course in Rome, telling them to dialogue with their flock.

Addressing the new Bishops, the Pope told them that they were chosen by God and therefore, what was required of them was not an intermittent dedication, but to give of their all day and night. Pope Francis stressed to those gathered, that they needed to “remain vigilant even when the light disappears, or when God himself is hidden in the darkness, when the temptation to withdraw is insinuated and the “Evil one”, who is always lurking, subtly suggests that by now the dawn will no longer come.”

Perseverance in faith

He continued by saying, that it was vital to “remain faithful even when, in the heat of the day, the forces of perseverance fail and the result of fatigue no longer depends on the resources we have.”Offering the new Bishops advice as they begin their ministry, the Pontiff asked them “to put God at the centre”. He is the one, the Pope said, “who asks everything but in return offers life fully”. He went on to say, that they should not let themselves be drawn in by stories of catastrophes or prophecies regarding disasters, because what really matters is persevering, and keeping their heads raised towards the Lord.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- The leaders of the U.S. bishops' conference said they shared with Pope Francis how the church in the United States has been "lacerated by the evil of sexual abuse."

"He listened very deeply from the heart," said a statement released after the meeting Sept. 13.

Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, met the pope at the Vatican along with Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley of Boston, president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, Archbishop Jose H. Gomez of Los Angeles, vice president of the USCCB, and Msgr. J. Brian Bransfield, general secretary of the conference.

The USCCB statement described the encounter as "a lengthy, fruitful and good exchange," but did not enter into details about what was discussed or whether any concrete measures were taken or promised.

Pope orders investigation into US bishop

Pope Francis has ordered an investigation of harassment allegations against West Virginia Bishop Michael Bransfield

Pope Francis has ordered an investigation into an American bishop accused of sexually harassing adults.

The announcement of the new investigation came on the same day he met with leaders of the United States Church for crunch talks on the abuse crisis.

As the moment the US cardinals arrived for their meeting with Francis in the Vatican’s apostolic palace, the Holy See announced the Pope had ordered Archbishop of Baltimore, William E. Lori, to investigate harassment allegations against West Virginia Bishop Michael Bransfield.

A Vatican communique added that Francis had accepted Bishop Bransfield's resignation and handed executive responsibility of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston to Archbishop Lori as an apostolic administrator. He will take on this role in addition to leading the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

The decision to investigate Bishop Michael Bransfield comes amid an abuse crisis in the US Church that is now focusing on misconduct by bishops.

Pope at Mass: the cross teaches us not to fear defeat
14 September 2018, 11:19

Pope Francis celebrates Mass at the Casa Santa Marta  (Vatican Media)
Speaking to the faithful gathered for Mass at the Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis reflected on how the cross, the mark of Christians, the mark of God’s victory over evil.
By Alessandro Di Bussolo

“The cross of Jesus teaches us that in life there is failure and there is victory”, it teaches us not to fear the “dark times” which can be illuminated by the cross, which is a sign of God's victory over evil.

This was the message at the heart of Pope Francis’ homily on Friday morning during Mass at the Casa Santa Marta.

Describing Satan as evil who is demolished and chained, he warned those present that he “still barks” and that, if you approach him to caress him, “he will destroy you.”

Pope Francis meets Capuchin friars during their General Chapter in Rome and tells them that frugality and sobriety among their communities are the visible signs of God.
By Francesca Merlo

After welcoming the new General Minister, Br. Roberto Genuin, Pope Francis recognised some of the focal points of this year’s General Chapter. These include studying the theme “take my yoke… and learn from me”; and a document which “helps lead the consecrated person into the heart of the Gospel”.

Pope at Mass in Palermo: ‘God and the mafia are not compatible’
15 September 2018, 12:26

Pope Francis celebrates Mass in the Italian city of Palermo  (Vatican Media)
In his homily at Mass in the Italian city of Palermo, Pope Francis contrasts belief in God with mafia membership, saying true victory comes from the loving gift of self.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis celebrated Mass on Saturday during his pastoral visit in the Italian city of Palermo, saying Christians must choose either love or selfishness, victory or defeat.

“You cannot believe in God and be a member of the mafia,” the Pope declared. “Those belonging to the mafia are not living as Christians, because with their life they blaspheme the name of God who is love.”
