Pope to Palermo clergy and religious: Life speaks louder than words
15 September 2018, 16:19

Palermo Cathedral, 15th September 2018  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis addresses the clergy, seminarians, and men and women religious of the Italian city of Palermo, and takes the example of Blessed Father Pino Puglisi to highlight the importance of living the Gospel in daily life.
By Francesca Merlo

In his prepared remarks, Pope Francis commemorated three fundamental aspects of Father Pino Puglisi’s priesthood, in this way, he explained the importance of bringing to life what is preached using “three simple verbs”.

Celebration

The first verb is “to celebrate”, began Pope Francis. “Take and eat: this is my Body given up for you”. He explained that these words of Jesus, recited today like any other day, “must not remain on the altar.”

“They must be carried into life” because they remind us that the priest is a man who offers his whole life for others. “Ours, dear priests, is not a career, but a gift of self; it is not a job, but a mission. Each day, with no holidays, with no rest”. “This”, said Pope Francis, “is how Father Pino lived”.

Pope urges Sicilian youth not give up hope for a better future

The last public event of Pope Francis’ day-long visit to the Italian island of Sicily was a meeting with young people in Palermo. The youth asked the Pope some questions to which the Pope responded.
By Robin Gomes

To the first question on how to listen to the voice of the Lord, the Pope’s response was in 4 verbs: walk, search, dream and serve.

Listening to God

The Pope said one listens to and discovers God while walking and not seated in an armchair, because sitting, he said, creates interference with the Word of God, which is dynamic.  “God hates laziness and loves action,” the Pope said and pointed to examples from the Bible such as the disciples of Emmaus, David and Samuel, who were on the move.  “But,” the Pope said, “it is not about moving to keep fit, but about moving the heart.  The Lord speaks to those in search.

Pope Francis in Sicily--September 15, 2018

Pope Francis warns priests against living a double life
By Hannah Brockhaus

Palermo, Italy, Sep 15, 2018 / 04:03 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- During a day trip to Sicily Saturday, Pope Francis told priests and religious to fight their vices and strive to live a consistent witness of morality.

“One cannot live a double morality: one for the people of God and another in their own home,” the pope told a group of priests, religious and seminarians in Palermo, Italy, Sept. 15.

“No, the witness is only one. The testimony of Jesus always belongs to him. And for his love [the priest] undertakes a daily battle against his vices and against all alienating worldliness.”

He referred to the room of Bl. Pino Puglisi, who was assassinated by the Mafia 25 years ago, saying it stands “in genuine simplicity. It is the eloquent sign of a life consecrated to the Lord, who does not seek consolations and glory from the world.”

People look for simplicity in priests and in consecrated men and women. He said: “People are shocked not when they see that the priest ‘slips,’ is a sinner, repents and goes on… People’s scandal is when they see worldly priests, with the spirit of the world.”

People are scandalized, he continued, when they see a priest who is like “an executive,” rather than a pastor. “And this puts it right in your head and in your heart: shepherds yes, executives no!”

In the meeting, the pope also discussed clericalism, stating that clericalism is to think the Church is “above the world,” when the Church is in fact “inside the world, to make it ferment, like leaven in the dough.”

“For this reason, dear brothers and sisters, every form of clericalism must be banned. It is one of the most difficult perversions to remove today, clericalism.”

Pope Francis taps loyalists for key roles in Synod of Bishops
Elise Harris   Sep 15, 2018

ROME - Despite calls in some quarters to put October’s Synod of Bishops on hold due to abuse scandals effecting his papacy, Pope Francis has given no indication that he intends to call off the event, and with Saturday’s publication of the official list of participants, the gathering seems set to proceed as planned.

As usual, the list of some 300 cardinals, bishops, priests, religious and lay participants who will be present includes every region around the world, named for the most part by bishops’ conferences, or the pope himself.

In addition to a 15-member ordinary council organizing the synod, elected by participants at the close of the 2015 Synod on the Family, the list this year includes some 151 delegates named by bishops’ conferences and 39 papal appointees, in addition to the heads of all Vatican departments, the auditors, representatives from Eastern Churches and representatives named by the Union of Superior Generals.

Prelates named by Francis for this year’s Synod on Young People, Faith and the Discernment of Vocation, set to take place in Rome Oct. 3-28, represent not only his attention to social issues and global peripheries, but are also close papal allies.

Among the pope’s appointees are Cardinals Reinhard Marx of Munich and President of the German bishops’ conference; Blase Cupich of Chicago; Joseph Tobin of Newark, NJ and Angelo De Donatis, Vicar of the Diocese of Rome, all of whom, apart from Marx, got their red hat from Francis. All are seen as close papal confidants.

Also noteworthy are Francis’s appointments of Father Antonio Spadaro, director of Jesuit-run journal La Civilta’ Cattolica and a close papal friend, and Father Michael Czerny, undersecretary for the migrants and refugees section of the dicastery for Integral Human Development, which is overseen by Francis directly.

To mark the recent Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, Pope Francis gives those present at the Angelus prayer a small crucifix, calling it “a sign of the love of God, who in Jesus gave his life for us.”
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis gave a crucifix to every person present at the Sunday Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square, to mark the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross celebrated on Friday, September 14th.

“Today, two days after the Feast of the Holy Cross, I thought of giving you who are here in the Square a crucifix,” the Pope said, in his remarks following the Angelus prayer.

Around 40,000 silver-plated metal crucifixes were distributed, along with a prayer card with the words (in English, Italian, and Spanish): “The Cross of Christ contains all the love of God; there we find his immeasurable mercy.” Pope Francis pronounced those words during the Way of the Cross held at the World Youth Day in Brazil on July 26, 2013.

Pope at Angelus: ‘Faith reduced to formulas is short-sighted’
16 September 2018, 12:17

Pope Francis waves to the crowds at the Sunday Angelus  (Vatican Media)
Addressing the crowds gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the Angelus prayer, Pope Francis says Jesus invites us to a personal relationship with him, and not to a short-sighted faith reduced to formulas.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis prayed the Angelus with pilgrims and tourists in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, reflecting on the day’s Gospel (Mk 8:27-35).

Jesus, the Holy Father said, asks his disciples the question that runs through the whole of Mark’s Gospel: “Who is Jesus?”. Pope Francis said Jesus helps his disciples gradually to come to grips with this basic question about his identity.

Short-sightedness vs. personal relationship

First, Jesus asks them who others say he is.

The Pope said Jesus considers the disciples’ responses inadequate. “He does not even accept his disciples’ answers using pre-packaged formulas, citing famous people from Sacred Scripture,” the Pope said, “because a faith that is reduced to formulas is a short-sighted faith.”

Pope Francis said the Lord is inviting his disciples, now as then, “to establish a personal relationship with him, and thus welcome him as the center of their lives.”

Pope to Armenian monks: continue to illuminate the path to unity
17 September 2018, 12:10

A letter from Pope Francis was read at the conclusion of celebrations marking 300 years from the foundation of the Armenian Mekhitarist Congregation in its Monastery in Venice.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis on Sunday praised the Armenian Mekhitarist Congregation for their tradition of theological humanism and prophetic ecumenical openness and urged them to continue to provide precious witness.

Mekhitarist Congregation

The Congregation of Benedictine monks is widely recognized for its contribution to the renaissance of Armenian philology, literature, and culture early in the 19th century and for the publication of old Armenian Christian manuscripts, a tradition that Pope Francis described as a “beneficial gift for the ecumenical journey, which increasingly reveals itself as a sign of the times” in our effort to meet the Lord’s request to his disciples “to be one”.

In a letter addressed to Archbishop Boghos Levon Zekiyan, apostolic administrator of the Armenian Mekhitarist Congregation, the Pope said the congregation “is called to preserve and deepen its charism for the good of all Armenian people."

Francis’ message was read in the presence of Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches during celebrations of the Divine Liturgy on the Island of San Lazzaro in Venice.

Pope Francis at Mass: Jesus the icon of the meek and compassionate pastor
18 September 2018, 12:21

Pope Francis preaching during morning Mass at Casa Santa Marta  ( Vatican Media)
Pope Francis’ homily during Mass on Tuesday at Casa Santa Marta focuses on Jesus who drew near to people as he walked the streets of his world and as he gave his life on the cross.
By Sr Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp

Pope Francis reflected on the Gospel of the day (Luke 7:11-17) during his homily on Tuesday at Casa Santa Marta, which recounts the raising of the son of the widow of Nain. He presented Jesus, the icon of the shepherd, whose authority came from his compassion expressed in meekness, tenderness, and closeness to the people. The Pope encouraged pastors to imitate Jesus in being near to people, not near to the powerful or ideologues whom, he says, “poison souls”.

Silence and prayer: the last words

The Pope brought up that it was also the people who yelled “crucify him”. Jesus then compassionately remained silent because “the people were deceived by the powerful”, Pope Francis explained. His response was silence and prayer. Here the shepherd chooses silence when the “Great Accuser” accuses him “through so many people”. Jesus “suffers, offers his life, and prays”, Pope Francis said.

That prayer carried him even to the Cross, with strength; even there he had the capacity of drawing near to and healing the soul of the repentant thief.

Pope sends greetings to the Jewish community of Rome
18 September 2018, 12:24

Pope Francis greeting Chief Rabbi Riccardo Shemuel Di Segni on his January 2016 visit to the Synagogue of Rome.
“I am pleased to extend my sincere best wishes to you and to the Jewish Community of Rome”, Pope Francis said in a letter addressed to Rome’s Chief Rabbi, Riccardo Shemuel Di Segni.

The occasion for the Pope’s greeting is three-fold: Rosh Hashanah celebrated from September 9-11, Yom Kippur celebrated on September 18 and 19, and Sukkot which begins on September 23 and ends on September 30.

The Pope writes that he hopes that these festivities might revive “the memory of the benefits received from the Most High. He also extended his thought to all “the Jewish communities in the world” that they might find in these feasts “the source of further graces and spiritual consolation”.

“May the Most High bless us,” the Pope continued, “with the gift of peace, inspiring us toward greater diligence to promote it untiringly”.

Pope: The Synod of Bishops at the service of the People of God
18 September 2018, 12:00

Bishops in the Hall of the Synod at the Vatican, October 2015
Less than a month from the beginning of the Synod of Bishops dedicated to young people, Pope Francis has published an Apostolic Constitution, “Episcopalis communio,” on the structure of the Synod, which was instituted by Pope Paul VI in 1965.
By Giada Aquilino

Consultation with the People of God, and a synodal Church in which the exercise of the Petrine primacy could receive greater light: these are some of the characteristic notes of the Apostolic Constitution Episcopalis communio (“Episcopal communion”), on the structure of the Synod of Bishops. The document is dated 15 September 15, less than one month from the beginning of the XV Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod, which has for its theme “Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment.”

For the good of the whole Church

After recalling how the Synod was established by Paul VI on that date, and describing the Synod as one of the “most precious legacies of the Second Vatican Council,” Pope Francis emphasizes the “efficacious collaboration” of the Synod of Bishops with the Roman Pontiff on questions of major importance; that is, questions which “require a special knowledge and prudence for the good of the whole Church.” In an historic moment, Pope Francis says, one in which the Church is led to a new “evangelizing stage” towards “a permanent state of mission,” the Synod of Bishops is called “to become an even greater channel” for the evangelization of today’s world.

Youth to meet with Pope Francis during October synod
By Hannah Brockhaus

Vatican City, Sep 18, 2018 / 10:21 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The Synod of Bishops announced Tuesday that the upcoming assembly of bishops will include a meeting of young people with Pope Francis and the Synod Fathers in the Vatican’s Pope Paul VI hall.

Taking place starting at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, the encounter is intended to allow “young people to offer concrete experiences about their life in study and work, their feelings, their future and their vocational choice,” a press release stated.

Pope Francis will be present for the entirety of the encounter, which follows a pre-synod gathering that was held at the Vatican in March, with around 300 youth participants. The press statement noted that Pope Francis wants to meet young people again with the Synod Fathers to listen to them and to consider their proposals for the final document of the synod.

The gathering will include testimonies from young people interspersed with musical and artistic performances and will focus on three themes: the search for identity, relationships, and life as service and gift.

“Honouring parents leads to a long happy life,” said Pope Francis during Wednesday’s general audience, pointing out that the word “happiness” in the Ten Commandments appears only in relation to parents.  In fact, the fourth commandment a  promise – “so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”

ROME - Bono, the lead singer of the Irish band U2, said he told Pope Francis that in Ireland “it looks as though the abusers are being more protected than the victims. And you could see the pain in his face.”

Bono met the pope Sept. 19 to sign an agreement between his charity, ONE, and the Scholas Occurentes educational charity supported by Pope Francis.

During the half-hour meeting, Bono said, he brought up Pope Francis’ recent trip to Ireland and the concerns there about the sexual abuse crisis.

The pope was “aghast,” Bono said. “I thought he was sincere.”

“I think he is an extraordinary man for extraordinary times,” the singer said.

Bono said the conversation touched on many topics, including poverty, commerce and meeting the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.

They spoke, he said, “about how we have to rethink the wild beast that is capitalism and how, though it is not immoral, it is amoral and it requires our instruction. He’s very keen on that.”

U.S. bishops announce new abuse-prevention measures and call for McCarrick investigation

Washington D.C., Sep 19, 2018 / 02:30 pm (CNA).- The U.S. bishops’ conference has announced new accountability measures in response to recent clerical sex-abuse scandals. The reforms include the establishment of an independent reporting mechanism to receive complaints against bishops, and the development of a Code of Conduct for bishops.

A statement released Sept. 19 by the USCCB’s Administrative Committee said that the new steps being taken to combat abuse are “only the beginning,” and that consultations were underway with laity, clergy, and religious on how better to “repair the scandal and restore justice.”

The Administrative Committee’s statement announced four key policies.

According to the statement, the committee met to discuss the proposals last week. The announcement also follows a Sept. 13 meeting between Pope Francis and senior U.S. bishops, led by Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, president of the bishops’ conference.

US bishops voice support for ‘full investigation’ of McCarrick scandal
John L. Allen Jr.   Sep 19, 2018

ROME - After a meeting between Pope Francis and the leadership of the US bishops’ conference last Thursday following which no plans for a probe of the case of ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick were announced, the bishops on Wednesday announced their support for a “full investigation.”

On Aug. 16, DiNardo said that the aim of the meeting was to secure the pope’s approval for an Apostolic Visitation, a standard Vatican investigative tool, of the McCarrick scandal, which led to his resignation from the College of Cardinals after a charge of having sexually abused a minor altar boy.

Although there has been no official comment from either the Vatican or the USCCB, it’s widely understood that no agreement on an Apostolic Visitation resulted from the meeting, which lends the Administrative Committee statement special significance.

In its meeting last week, the committee, the statement said, “supported a full investigation into the situation surrounding Archbishop McCarrick, including his alleged assaults on minors, priests, and seminarians, as well as any responses made to those allegations.  Such an investigation should rely upon lay experts in relevant fields, such as law enforcement and social services.”

The statement did not address exactly who would lead such an investigation, how it would unfold, or what topics it might cover.

Pope at Santa Marta Mass: Jesus teaches true love
20 September 2018, 14:06

The Mass of Pope Francis at the Casa Santa Marta  (Vatican Media)
In the morning Mass at the Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis calls us to be merciful like Jesus, and to not condemn others.
By Giada Aquilino

Let us ask Jesus, “with His mercy and His forgiveness,” always to protect our Church which “like a mother, is holy,” but is also “full of sinful children, like us.” This was the prayer of Pope Francis at the morning Mass at the Casa Santa Marta. The Holy Father was reflecting on the day’s readings, focusing on the words of Jesus: “her many sins have been forgiven; for she has shown great love.”

Jesus sees small acts of love

The Pope described three types of people in the day’s readings: Jesus and his disciples; Paul and the woman whose sins were forgiven; and the doctors of the law.

The woman in the Gospel is described as having “so much love towards Jesus,” while not hiding the fact that she is a sinner. Saint Paul, the Pope said, is similar in recognizing, and handing on to us, that “Christ died for our sins.” Both were seeking God “with love,” but their love was a kind of “half-love.” The Pope explained that when Paul was persecuting the Church, he thought that love was a law and his heart was closed to the revelation of Jesus Christ. He persecuted Christians out of zeal for the law; and this, the Pope said, was a love that was immature.

The woman, too, was seeking love, the “little love.” The Pharisees commented on the fact that she was a sinner, but Jesus explains: “This woman was forgiven much because she loved much.” The Pope puts a question in the mouth of the Pharisees:

“But how can she love? These people [sinners] do not know how to love.” [But] they seek love. And Jesus, speaking about these people, says – he once said – that they are before us, in the Kingdom of Heaven. “But what a scandal!” – the Pharisees [say] – “But these people!” Jesus looks upon the small gesture of love, the small gesture of good will, and takes it, and carries it forward. This is the mercy of Jesus: He always forgives, He always receives.

The scandal of the hypocrites

With regard to the “doctors of the law,” Pope Francis says that “they have an attitude that only the hypocrites use often: they are scandalized.” And they say:

Pope Francis greets participants at Conference on Xenophobia, Racism and Populist Nationalism in the Context of Global Migration   (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis received the participants in an international conference on racism in the global context warning against an upsurge of intolerance and urging politicians to avoid exploiting fear.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis warned that attitudes that many thought were a thing of the past – such as racism – are on the rise again and can lead to intolerant and discriminating behavior and policies and he urged politicians to avoid exploiting fear against those seeking refuge and better lives in our countries.

He was addressing participants at a just-ended Rome-based conference "Xenophobia, Racism and Populist Nationalism in the Context of Global Migration" at the Vatican on Thursday.

Pope to Workers Assoc: Solidarity promotes the common good
20 September 2018, 09:14

Pope meets with Italian Association for Injured Workers (ANMIL)  (Vatican Media)
At an Audience with members of Italy’s National Association for those injured or disabled at work (ANMIL), Pope Francis says we should not confuse solidarity with dependency.
By Seàn-Patrick Lovett

Every minute, somewhere in the world, two people die as a result of a work-related accident. Statistics published by the International Labour Organization estimate that, every year, over 2 million women and men succumb to work-related fatalities or diseases. And the number of occupational accidents that leave workers either partially injured or permanently disabled, is in the hundreds of millions.

Particular suffering

On Thursday morning in the Vatican, Pope Francis met with members of the Italian Association for Injured Workers (ANMIL). He praised the Association for its efforts to support both the victims of accidents at work and their families. He also acknowledged how “those who have undergone permanent and debilitating injuries at work experience particular suffering, especially when their disability prevents them from continuing to work and provide for themselves and their loved ones. To all of them I express my closeness”, he added

WARSAW, Poland - The Polish archbishop tasked with overseeing Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Medjugorje shrine has outlined plans for expansion, including more Masses in different languages and facilities for young pilgrims who flock to the site of the alleged Marian apparitions.

“Medjugorje represents Europe’s spiritual lungs, a place where millions discover God and the beauties of the church,” said Archbishop Henryk Hoser, retired archbishop of Warsaw-Praga.

“We now have to re-create its infrastructure, firstly by securing its liturgical space. We also need to expand its areas for retreats and provide new places for celebrating the Eucharist, especially for pilgrims,” he said.

In May, Pope Francis appointed Hoser apostolic visitor to Medjugorje, where six young people claimed in 1981 that Mary had appeared to them.

The report of a papal commission set up in 2010 to study the alleged apparitions has not been made public, but some of its points were revealed after Francis spoke about the commission’s work.

The pontiff acknowledged that pilgrims to the Marian site deserve spiritual care and support, but he also expressed doubts about claims of the continuing apparitions of Mary in Medjugorje.
