Pope at General Audience: welcome life as God’s gift
10 October 2018, 10:51
Pope Francis greets pilgrims in St Peter's square prior to the Wednesday General Audience (Vatican Media )
Pope Francis continues his catechesis on the Commandments during Wednesday’s General Audience saying that welcoming life as God’s gift corrects a vision of life interpreted as a problem to be eliminated
.
By Sr Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp
During the Wednesday General Audience, Pope Francis reflected on the Fifth Commandment: You shall not kill. When life is welcomed as a gift from God, he said, the vision of interpreting life through the lens of eliminating problems can be corrected.
Value of life
The reading from Wisdom 11:24-26 provided the inspiration for the Pope’s remarks. Pope Francis reaffirmed that the Fifth Commandment is concise and to the point. It is “a defending wall for the foundational value in human relations: the value of life”, he said.
Gift of God, not a problem
Pope Francis then noted a contradictory approach to life: the suppression of “human life in the mother’s womb in order to safeguard other values”.
It is not right to 'take out' a human being, no matter how little, to resolve a problem. That is like hiring a hitman to resolve a problem

Synod of Bishops: We don’t believe in a “google” God
10 October 2018, 16:28
Pope Francis at the Synod on young people
Today at the Synod of Bishops on Youth a number of interventions were made that highlighted the social context in which young people are trying to live their faith
.
By Russell Pollitt, SJ
The Prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for Communications, Mr Paolo Ruffini, began today’s Synod press briefing with a report outlining numerous interventions made in the Synod’s general assembly hall.
The bishops have begun working on the second part of the Instrumentum Laboris, analysing the context in which young people find themselves today
.
Mr Ruffini also clarified the fact that the Chinese bishops would not be staying for the entire Synod. They had previous engagements before they were invited to the Synod.
Interventions
A number of issues arose, these included accompaniment and formation, vocations, new “totalitarianisms” (things which colonise young people and take away freedom) and how to create safes spaces to assist young people discern what is good. Mr Ruffini said that in one intervention it was said that the Church cannot be reduced to a “google” God. He said that there was an acknowledgement that the Church had failed to accompany young people in marriage and that marriage should not be reduced to a ceremony.

Pope Mass: Jesus teaches us to be "invasive" in prayer
11 October 2018, 11:31
Pope Francis at the Casa Santa Marta (Vatican Media)
The Pope at his homily at the Casa Santa on Thursday says we must be courageous when we ask something of the Lord. God is the friend who can give us what we need
.
A passage in Thursday’s Gospel was at the heart of Pope Francis’ homily at Mass at the Casa Santa Marta. The theme that was addressed was that of prayer, of how we must pray. Jesus tells his disciples of a man who, at midnight, knocks at a friend's house to ask him for something to eat. And the friend replies that it is not the right moment, that he is already in bed, but then gets up and gives him what he asks for.
Praying with courage and without getting tired
Pope Francis emphasizes three elements: a man in need, a friend, a little bread. It is a surprise visit from the needy friend and his is an insistent request because he has confidence in the friend who has what he needs. The Lord wants to teach us how to pray: said Pope Francis, wants us to pray with "intrusiveness".
Please be bold, because when we pray we usually have a need. The friend is God: he is a rich friend who has bread, he has what we need. As Jesus said: "In prayer be intrusive. Do not get tired ". But do not get tired of what? Of asking. “Ask and it will be given to you”.

Synod: the digital world, fear, loneliness and Korea
11 October 2018, 16:28
Synod of Bishops on Youth daily briefing
Three issues dominated the daily press briefing for the Synod of Bishops on Young People: the digital world, fear, loneliness and the Korean Peninsula
.
By Russell Pollitt, SJ
Dr Paolo Ruffini, the Prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for Communications, said that discussions in the Synod assembly continued in a serene and cheerful manner with lots of joyful interactions between the bishops and young people. He said that there was an emphasis on the fact that charity mustn’t just be preached but also seen in action. He told journalists that one young person told the Synod Fathers that thousands of young people looked towards them for something concrete from the Synod, they trusted the Fathers would meet their hopes. Dr Ruffini also said that an intervention about secularisation urged the bishops to see this not only as a negative move but one that frees religion from a connection to national identities. It challenges the Church to a more mature faith.
Digital World
Dr Ruffini said that although the digital world is a great development and facilitates the exchange of information it also has boundaries. The danger of manipulation and a culture of violence is very real in both images and writing. The Church must help bring humanity back to the digital world.
Archbishop Bruno Forte of Italy said that the Synod assembly recognised that there are many young people who are lonely, not engaging in the reality of relationships, but rather seeking them online. The Synod assembly pondered how the Church reaches these young people who are alone in the dark in front of their computers which, he said, threatens to swallow them.

After early votes, it’s clear Pope Francis has ‘his’ Synod of Bishops
John L. Allen Jr. Oct 11, 2018
News Analysis
ROME - A Synod of Bishops is often described as the “Congress of the Catholic Church,” with the College of Cardinals being the Catholic Senate. Both comparisons are terribly inexact, beginning with the fact that neither Catholic body holds any real power because it’s all in the hands of the pope.
Yet there are certainly parallels, beginning with the fact that a synod, like the House of Representatives, has some procedural quirks that can shape outcomes. One is the sequence in which elections inside the synod are held.
In its first formal act after convening last Wednesday, the synod elected members to an “Information Commission,” responsible for deciding what information the body releases to the public and how it’s presented. The elections are conducted by what the Vatican considers continents, meaning America, Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania. Members from those regions vote for representatives from their region, and not for others.
The Information Commission is led by Paolo Ruffini, the Italian layman who heads the Vatican’s Secretariat for Communications, and also features Jesuit Father Antonio Spadaro, one of the pope’s closest advisors and allies
.
Arguably, this commission isn’t terribly significant in the big-picture scheme of things - most of the important decisions about communications strategy are made before the bishops ever assemble, and their work doesn’t have any direct impact on the content of synod debates or its conclusions.
Yet because it comes first, often it’s an important test of where the synod stands and who’s perceived as a natural leader. In that sense, its results have outsized symbolic meaning.
One thing that can be said with certainty is that Pope Francis largely has the kind of churchmen on the drafting commission he wants, which means that perhaps even more than his first two bites at the apple, this is “his” synod - his people, his rules (confirmed just before the summit opened), and his approach.
As a result, if this synod is seen as a success, the pope unquestionably will deserve the lion’s share of the credit. If it’s not, there’s really no “opposition” this time to blame.

Synod 2018
https://www.thetablet.co.uk/news/10845/the-12-men-who-will-draft-final-youth-synod-doc
11 October 2018 | by Christopher Lamb in Rome , Christa Pongratz-Lippitt , Liz Dodd
The 12 men who will draft final youth synod doc
A 12-member commission of bishops and priests representing nearly every part of the world will draft the youth synod’s final document
.
Five of them were elected by the synod fathers and include Cardinal Peter Turkson, the Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, (Africa), the Cardinal Archbishop of Mexico City, Carlos Aguiar Retes (Americas), the Archbishop of Melbourne, Peter Comensoli (Oceania), Cardinal Archbishop of Bombay, Oswald Gracias (Asia) and the Archbishop of Chieti-Vasto, Bruno Forte (Europe).
The Pope also named three personal appointees to the commission. These include the Major Archbishop of Ukraine’s Greek Catholic Church, Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, Brazilian priest Fr Alexandre Awi Mello, secretary of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life and Fr Eduardo Redondo, who has responsibility for pastoral vocation work for the Church in Cuba.
The job of the body will be to draft a document that will be presented to the synod fathers to discuss and vote on. The work will be led by the Cardinal Archbishop of Brasilia, Sérgio da Rocha, the relator general of the synod, Cardinal Lorenzo Baldisseri, the Synod of Bishops secretary-general, and the two synod special secretaries, Jesuit priest Fr Giacomo Costa and Salesian Fr Rossano Sala.
Their first task will be to take material from the synod’s small group discussion groups, known as the "circoli minori", which has included discussion of the abuse scandals.

Forte was asked if, as some believe, the draft of the synod’s final document is already written

+BrunoForte: as final doc commission of #synod18’s just been set up, it’d be “impossible” to draw up text in such a short time, but secretaries are “working on it by listening & elaborating; we’ve provided ideas, contributions, discussed possibilities for schemas with great care”

Pope Francis accepts resignation of Cardinal Donald Wuerl
12 October 2018, 12:42
Cardinal Donald Wuerl
Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl from the pastoral governance of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C
.
By Christopher Wells
Cardinal Wuerl had submitted his resignation three years ago, when he turned 75, in accordance with the Code of Canon Law (can. 401 §1). In September, the Cardinal met with Pope Francis and requested that his resignation be accepted. At the time, a spokesman for the Archdiocese of Washington D.C. said “Cardinal Wuerl understands that healing from the abuse crisis requires a new beginning and this includes new leadership for the Archdiocese of Washington.”

Statement from Cardinal Wuerl
October 12, 2018
“Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has accepted the resignation first offered on November 12, 2015, when I reached my 75th birthday. I am profoundly grateful for his devoted commitment to the wellbeing of the Archdiocese of Washington and also deeply touched by his gracious words of understanding.
The Holy Father’s decision to provide new leadership to the Archdiocese can allow all of the faithful, clergy, religious and lay, to focus on healing and the future. It permits this local Church to move forward. Once again for any past errors in judgment I apologize and ask for pardon. My resignation is one way to express my great and abiding love for you the people of the Church of Washington.”

Pope at Mass: watch out against friendly, “well-mannered demons”
12 October 2018, 14:52
Pope Francis at Mass at Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican on October 12, 2018. (Vatican Media)
During his morning Mass on Friday Pope Francis spoke about how well-mannered demons can lead us to worldliness with guile and persuasion
.
By Robin Gomes
Pope Francis celebrated Mass Friday morning at the Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican, saying that when the devil cannot destroy head on with vices, wars or injustices, he does so subtly with guiles, gradually leading people into the spirit of the world, making them feel nothing is wrong.
He was sharing his reflection on the day’s Gospel reading where Jesus drives out a demon who returns with other more wicked spirits to take possession of his old home.
Struggle between good and evil
When the devil takes possession of a person’s heart, the Pope said, he makes it his home not wanting to leave, and tries to ruin the person and harm him even physically.
The Pope explained that the struggle between good and evil in us human beings is the true struggle between the first struggle between God and the ancient serpent, between Jesus and the devil.
Warning that the devil’s purpose and vocation is "to destroy the work of God", Pope Francis said that when the devil cannot destroy “face to face” because God is a greater force that defends the person, then he, cunning and "smarter than a fox", seeks ways to regain possession of that person.

Synod of Bishops: Women, persecution, “nones” and Humanae vitae
12 October 2018, 17:02
Synod of Bishops on Young People media briefing
The General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops covered a large range of topics. These included the role of women, persecution and migration, reaching the “nones,” and spiritual mentorship
.
By Russell Pollitt, SJ
Bishops Robert Barron from the United States and Everardus Johannes de Jong from the Netherlands told the briefing that the Synod has been a joyful experience in which there has been, so far, good open discussions. Bishop de Jong said that he felt the atmosphere was democratic. Bishop Barron said that if there was any doubt about who the protagonists of the Synod were, he assures people that it was most certainly the young people. He said that it was wonderful to see how the Church has listened. The bishop said that it was the catholicity of the Church on full display.
The Prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for Communications, Dr Paolo Ruffini, gave a synopsis of what was discussed in the assembly. These included the accompaniment of young people – not just for vocational discernment but all through life; Christians who are being persecuted (he mentioned Iraq specifically and an intervention made by a young participant that got applause from the assembly); the role of women; clerical abuse; the failure of the Church in communication and the education of the faithful; migration; intergenerational dialogue; the possibility of new ways of living community life which may be for a limited time but can help young people find the accompaniment they seek; and how liturgy should not be reduced to an artifact.

A Holy See Press office statement said that during the “cordial discussions, satisfaction was expressed for the existing good relations between the Holy See and Chile.”
The two sides “then went on to consider the situation of the country, with particular reference to the defence of life and the painful scourge of abuse of minors, reiterating the effort of all in collaboration to combat and prevent the perpetration of such crimes and their concealment.”

The Synod Fathers apologise to youth, African issues have been overlooked, and Pope Francis always shows respect
.
By Russell Pollitt, SJ
Ms. Corina Fiore Mortola Rodríguez from Mexico said that she wants to convey that she, and the young people at the Synod, are very grateful to Pope Francis for giving them this opportunity to be at the Synod and for the chance to speak. She said that the presence of young people has been fruitful and everyone is working together. She explained how, in a coffee break, she had a conversation with Pope Francis who told her that young people must “shake up the Church”. She says that the Holy Father told young to speak their minds.

Youth Synod’s Missing Element: Discussion of Humanae Vitae
Even though its author Paul VI will be canonized Sunday, the encyclical’s message hasn’t shaped the synod’s deliberations
.
Edward Pentin
VATICAN CITY — One subject so far missing from this month’s Youth Synod discussion has been the 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae, despite the document’s 50th anniversary this year, and Pope Francis’ canonizing the encyclical’s author, Blessed Paul VI, on Sunday.
Archbishop Bruno Forte, a member of the governing council of the Oct. 3-28 synod on “Faith, Young People, and Vocational Discernment,” told reporters Thursday “we haven’t talked about it, or at least I don’t think there have been any contributions.”
Published in 1968, Humanae Vitae reaffirmed the Church’s prohibition of contraception, approved natural family planning (NFP) methods in certain circumstances, and developed the Church’s teaching to stress two essential meanings of the conjugal act: the unitive and procreative, which are “inseparably connected” to each other.
Ever since its publication, dissenters inside and outside the Church have tried to soften its teaching to allow contraceptive use, while many others, especially in the pro-life movement, have long upheld Humanae Vitae as prophetic, especially in light of the breakdown of marriage and the family which they attribute to widespread use of birth control.
Although the theme of chastity has been widely discussed in the small language groups, contraception has hardly been mentioned, and possibly not more than once (a Nigerian bishop included it in his synod intervention earlier this week).
“It would seem you’ve been reading my thoughts,” said Cardinal Wilfrid Napier, telling the Register Oct. 13 it is “true that not much attention has been given to Humanae Vitae.” But the archbishop of Durban, South Africa, and a member of the synod’s information commission, said it would be the subject of his intervention next week.

(ACI Prensa).-
Meet the seven people Pope Francis will officially recognize as saints of the Catholic Church on Sunday
.
Below are brief biographies on each of their lives, as well as photos of each saint's banner currently on display at the Vatican.
Blessed Pope Paul VI
Born Giovanni Battista Montini in 1897 and ordained a priest in 1920, he did graduate studies in literature, philosophy, and canon law in Rome before beginning to work for the Vatican Secretariat of State. In 1954, he was named Archbishop of Milan, and in 1958 was made a Cardinal by Pope John XXIII. As a Cardinal, he helped to arrange the Second Vatican Council and chose to continue the council after he became Pope.
Montini was elected as Pope Paul VI in 1963 at age 65, not long after the start of the second Vatican Council. This was a difficult time for the Church and for the world, as the “Sexual Revolution” was in full swing and the struggle for civil rights in the United States in particular was at its peak. Paul VI is perhaps most noted for his 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae, which served as the Church’s official rebuke to artificial contraception, prohibiting its use.
Paul VI died in 1978 and Pope Francis beatified him in 2014.

The Pope’s visit to Benedict XVI came on the eve of the Canonization Mass during which Pope Paul VI, Archbishop Oscar Romero and five others were elevated to Sainthood
.
Benedict XVI was created a Cardinal by Pope Paul VI during his last Consistory on 27 June 1977.
On 27 April 2014, the Pope Emeritus concelebrated the Canonization Mass presided over by Pope Francis, of his predecessors John Paul II and John XXIII: a Mass that has gone down in history as the Mass “of the four Popes.”

Pope Francis Canonizes Paul VI, Oscar Romero and 5 Other Saints
October 14, 2018 11:49•Deborah Castellano Lubov
Pope Francis has canonized Pope Paul VI, Archbishop Oscar Romero and five other saints.
This morning in St. Peter’s Square, before a crowd of about 70,000 people, Pope Francis presided over Holy Mass for the canonization of the saints while the Synod of Bishops on young people, the faith and vocational discernment is underway in the Vatican, Oct. 3-28, 2018
.
He also proclaimed canonized saints Francesco Spinelli, Vincenzo Romano, Maria Caterina Kasper, Nazaria Ignazia of Saint Teresa of Jesus, and Nunzio Sulprizio.
Pope Francis began recalling that today’s second reading tells us that “the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two- edged sword (Heb 4:12).
