Youth synod document says faith can combat relativism
Vatican City, Jan 10, 2019 / 11:59 am
(CNA).-
The Synod of Bishops released Thursday an English translation of the final document of the 2018 session on young people, faith, and vocational discernment. The document encourages young people to seek an authentic encounter with God, instead of adopting a morally relativistic outlook on life
.
The document highlights the spiritual and religious experiences of young people around the world, both in and outside of the Church, noting that in many places “forms of alternative religiosity are on the rise.” It also held out the authentic Christian experience of many young people as a witness of faith and hope to their peers.
“The youth help to enrich what the Church is and not only what she does. They are her present and not only her future,” the synod fathers wrote.
The synod met for more than three weeks in October for its fifteenth ordinary general session, and published the original text of its conclusions on Oct. 27. The document was released in English by the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops on Thursday.
During the meeting, synod fathers were joined in Rome by young people and religious form around the world who participated in the session as auditors.

Pope makes day trip to cloistered Poor Clares in Umbria

ROME -
Pope Francis left the Vatican Jan. 11 to visit a community of cloistered Poor Clare nuns in Umbria, the Vatican said.
The pope made the “private visit” to encourage the sisters and to share the Eucharist, prayer and a meal with them, said Alessandro Gisotti, interim director of the Vatican press office.
In some ways, Francis was repaying a visit. Members of the Poor Clares of Santa Maria di Vallegloria in Spello, about 100 miles north of Rome, had visited Francis in August 2016 at his Vatican residence, the Domus Sanctae Marthae.

Pope Francis is scheduled to undertake an Apostolic Visit to Romania from 31 May to 2 June 2019.
By Linda Bordoni
Pope Francis will travel to Romania for an Apostolic Visit that will take him to the capital Bucharest, to the eastern university city of Iași, to Blaj in Transylvania and to the Marian Shrine of Sumuleu Ciuc on the outskirts of Miercurea Ciuc city, also in Transylvania.
Holy See Press Office “ad-interim” Director, Alessandro Gisotti, said the visit is scheduled to take place from 31 May to 2 June. It comes following an invitation by State Authorities and the Romanian Catholic Church.
Motto
The motto of the visit is “Let’s Walk Together.” The trip’s logo, in blue and gold, depicts a group of Romanian people walking beneath an image of Our Lady, which according to a statement from the Holy See Press Office, evokes the Virgin Mary’s care and protection of the Romanian people

Vatican adds new press office roles in ongoing communications reform
Elise Harris Jan 11, 2019
ROME -
In the latest move in the ongoing shakeup of Vatican communications, the pope’s top communications official has created four new positions for the Holy See Press Office, adding two Americans, a Peruvian and a Frenchwoman to the mix
.
In a Jan. 11 communique, the Vatican’s communications office announced that Paolo Ruffini, who heads the department, has begun “a process to form a new organizational structure” of the press office following the Dec. 31 resignations of Greg Burke and Paloma Garcia Ovejero, director and vice director, respectively. When they were appointed in August 2016, it was the first time the papal spokespersons were both non-clergy, non-Italian, and included a woman.
In the interim, Alessandro Gisotti, who previously served as Coordinator of Social Media for the Vatican office for communications and is a longtime veteran of Vatican Radio, was tapped to take the reins.
Following the passing of the baton, Ruffini has created the position of a “Senior Advisor” to the director of the press office, naming Frenchwoman Romilda Ferrauto to the post.

Pope: History helps us reflect on the past and shows us the way forward
12 January 2019, 13:07
Pope Francis on Saturday addressed Professors of Church History inviting them to continue to contribute to the contemplation of Christ: “the cornerstone, who works in the history and memory of humanity and of all cultures”.
By Linda Bordoni
Thanking Italian Professors of Church History for their service to the Magisterium of the Church, Pope Francis reflected on how history is a teacher of life, but regretfully also has very few students!
He was receiving in audience members of the Italian Academic Association of Church History that has just wrapped up a Conference marking the its 50th anniversary.

Catholics find flourishing faith life in Muslim UAE, where pope will visit
Doreen Abi Raad Jan 12, 2019
CATHOLIC NEWS SERVICE
BEIRUT, Lebanon -
Catholics from around the world living in the United Arab Emirates are waiting with great anticipation for Pope Francis’s Feb. 3-5 visit, the first papal trip to the Arabian Peninsula
.
“Pope Francis is the ambassador of peace, courageously crossing borders and fostering personal encounters with religious leaders, heads of states and humanitarian organizations in the Arab world,” said Father Johnson Kadukkan, parish priest at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Abu Dhabi, where Francis will stop for a private visit Feb. 5 before celebrating Mass at Zayed Sports City Stadium.
There are eight Catholic churches throughout the seven emirates of the UAE, with a ninth church under construction. Each church offers an extensive schedule of “weekend” Masses, all of which are full. Since the UAE is an Islamic country and Friday is considered a day of prayer for Muslims, Catholics attend weekend Mass on Friday or Saturday; Sunday is a workday.
St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Abu Dhabi, for example, has about 90,000 parishioners, with eight priests celebrating nearly 20 Masses during the weekend in various languages: Arabic, English, Tagalog, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Korean, Polish, Ukrainian, Urdu, Sinhalese and the Indian languages of Konkani, Malayalam and Tamil.

Pope Francis at Baptism Mass: ‘Faith is transmitted in the home’
13 January 2019, 11:49
Pope Francis baptizes a newborn baby at Mass (Vatican Media)
During Mass on the Solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord, Pope Francis baptizes 27 newborn babies, and invites parents to transmit the faith to their children within the home
.
By Devin Watkins
Speaking to parents in his homily on Sunday, the Holy Father reflected on the parental duty of transmitting the faith to the next generation.
“You have asked the Church for faith for your children, and today they will receive the Holy Spirit and the gift of faith in each one’s heart and soul.”
But, Pope Francis said, “this faith must be developed; it must grow.”

Pope at Angelus: ‘Remember date of your Baptism’
13 January 2019, 12:52
Pope Francis waves to pilgrims at the Angelus prayer (Vatican Media)
Ahead of the Sunday Angelus prayer, Pope Francis urges each of us to remember the date of our Baptism, and reflects on Jesus’ two-fold immersion at his own Baptism in the Jordan
.
By Devin Watkins
Pope Francis had a seemingly simple question for everyone present at the Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square: “Which of you knows the date of your Baptism?”
He invited everyone who doesn’t to find out from their parents, grandparents, or godparents and to celebrate that date every year.

The deep meaning of Rome’s ‘Three Coins in the Fountain’ contretemps

Anyone who’s ever been to Rome on holiday - for that matter, anyone who’s ever seen movies such as “Three Coins in the Fountain” - knows what you’re supposed to do at the city’s famed Trevi Fountain. You toss in a coin and make a wish, hoping that good fortune will be yours
.
Last year, roughly $1.7 million worth of coins was tossed into the fountain. What people performing that traditional act may not have known is that since 2001, the proceeds have gone to fund the Catholic Church’s charitable activity in the city, through an arrangement among the city government, the power company ACEA that administers the fountain, and Caritas, the Church’s charitable arm.
Caritas uses the money for direct service to the city’s poor, including soup kitchens, temporary shelters and housing for impoverished families. The amount accounts for roughly 15 percent of Caritas’s annual charitable budget.
As of April 1, however, that will no longer be the case
.
Rome’s current city government led by the left-wing populist “Five Star” movement under Mayor Virginia Raggi has decided to take back the funds, using them to pay ACEA’s bill to maintain the fountain as well as “social projects” and “routine maintenance of cultural patrimony.”

Rome mayor says Caritas will still get Trevi Fountain coins
Catholic News Service

ROME -
After weeks of confusion and consternation, Rome’s mayor told the Vatican newspaper that Rome Caritas would benefit not only from the coins tourists throw in the Trevi Fountain, but from coins tossed in any of the city’s historic water features
.
Caritas was informed in late December that it would no longer receive the coins that tourists toss over their shoulder into the Trevi Fountain, a ritual that is supposed to guarantee the person who pitched the coin would one day return to the city.
But, Virginia Raggi, Rome’s mayor, said it was all a misunderstanding. The city needs to ensure an accurate count of the money, so instead of having Caritas volunteers sort and count the coins, the city will entrust that to ACEA, the city utility responsible for cleaning and maintaining the famous fountain.
In 2018, the international collection of coins added up to about 1.5 million euros or about $1.7 million, a significant portion of the Rome diocesan Caritas’ budget for funding homeless shelters, soup kitchens and parish-based services to families in difficulty.
“No one ever thought about depriving Caritas of these funds,” Raggi told L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, Jan. 14. “The diocesan agency plays an important role for many needy and for the city of Rome, which wants to continue to be the capital of welcome for the weakest.”

In a message of encouragement to the organizers of the 13th March for Life in Paris, Pope Francis notes that evil and contempt for life go hand in hand.
The march, is scheduled to take place on 20th January.
The March for Life began as a peaceful protest march to demonstrate against changes to abortion laws in America in 1973. It has since become a global movement, with marches in many cities across the world. The March for Life, Paris, has been running since 2005.
Pope Francis’ message to the Paris March for Life was delivered by the Apostolic Nuncio to France, Archbishop Luigi Ventura.
In his message Pope Francis cordially greets the participants of the March for Life and reminds them that “all the evil in the world is summed up by contempt for life.”

Indulgence available for participants in National Prayer Vigil for Life
Washington D.C., Jan 14, 2019 / 02:47 pm
(CNA/EWTN News).-
The Holy See has granted that a plenary indulgence may be obtained by those who participate in the National Prayer Vigil for Life or other sacred celebrations surrounding the March for Life, being held Jan. 18 in Washington, D.C
.
“The Apostolic Penitentiary of the Holy See has granted a plenary indulgence that may be obtained, under the usual conditions, by those who participate in the sacred celebrations carried out on January 17 and 18,”
Bishop Michael Burbidge of Arlington said in a statement on the March for Life. “The elderly, sick and homebound may also gain a plenary indulgence if they spiritually unite themselves to these events and make their prayer and penance an offering to God.”
Kat Talalas, assistant director for pro-life communications at the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, said that “the Vatican has granted that a plenary indulgence may be obtained under the usual conditions by participating in the National Prayer Vigil for Life, as well as the other sacred celebrations surrounding the March for Life.”
An indulgence is the remission of the temporal punishment due to sins which have already been forgiven.
The usual conditions for a plenary indulgence which must be met are: that the individual be in the state of grace by the completion of the acts, have complete detachment from sin, and pray for the Pope's intentions. The person must also sacramentally confess their sins and receive Communion, up to about twenty days before or after the indulgenced act.

Vigano to McCarrick: Repent, for the sake of your soul
Vatican City, Jan 14, 2019 / 04:05 am
(CNA).-
A former papal representative to the U.S. has written an open letter to Archbishop Theodore McCarrick that urges the archbishop to repent publicly of the sexual abuse and misconduct of which he stands accused
.
“You, paradoxically, have at your disposal an immense offer of great hope for you from the Lord Jesus; you are in a position to do great good for the Church. In fact, you are now in a position to do something that has become more important for the Church than all of the good things you did for her throughout your entire life,” wrote Archbishop Carlo Vigano in a Jan. 13 letter to McCarrick.
“A public repentance on your part would bring a significant measure of healing to a gravely wounded and suffering Church. Are you willing to offer her that gift? Christ died for us all when we were still sinners (Rom. 5: 8 ). He only asks that we respond by repenting and doing the good that we are given to do.”
McCarrick, 88, has been accused in recent months of sexually abusing at least two adolescent boys, and of engaging for decades in coercive sexual behavior toward priests and seminarians. The allegations were first made public in June 2018, when the Archdiocese of New York reported that it deemed credible an allegation that McCarrick sexually abused a teenage boy in the 1970s, while serving as a New York priest.
In July 2018, Pope Francis accepted McCarrick’s resignation from the College of Cardinals
.
Vigano’s letter noted that McCarrick is subject to an administrative canonical process overseen by the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. A verdict is expected shortly from that process. If he is found guilty, McCarrick is expected to be dismissed from the clerical state

Pope Francis meets delegation of Chilean bishops in the Vatican

Members of Chilean Bishops' Conference meeting with Pope Francis (Vatican Media)
Following an audience in the Vatican with Pope Francis, the Secretary General of the Chilean Bishops' Conference speaks of the need for “clarity and intelligence” in dealing with the crime of sex abuse
.
By Vatican News
One year ago, in January 2018, Pope Francis visited Chile. The four-day apostolic journey was filled with significant encounters and events, but was largely overshadowed by abuse scandals and accusations of mishandling of cases by some of the country’s bishops.
In May this year, the Pope summoned all the bishops of Chile to the Vatican to address the crisis. The meeting concluded with the bishops presenting their resignations to Pope Francis.
This week, five Chilean bishops returned to Rome to brief the Pope on the progress the Church in Chile has made in addressing the issue of clerical sex abuse in their country since that meeting eight months ago.

Pope urges Asian Church to promote unity and integrity of faith
15 January 2019, 12:21
Pope Francis has sent a message to the Presidents of Doctrinal Commissions of Asian Bishops’ Conferences, who are meeting in Thailand.
By Linda Bordoni
Pope Francis has urged pastors of the Asian Church to foster cooperation and fraternal exchange and to reaffirm their common responsibility in promoting the unity and integrity of the Catholic faith in their vastly diverse continent.
His words of encouragement came in a message to the participants in a Meeting of the Presidents of Doctrinal Commissions of the Episcopal Conferences of Asia, taking place from 15 to 18 January in Bangkok, Thailand.
Asia: vast and diverse continent
The Pope greeted the participants and noted the challenges they face in Asia that, he said, is such a vast continent that is “marked by religious, linguistic and cultural diversity, in order to reaffirm our common responsibility for the unity and integrity of the Catholic faith”.
He also encouraged them “to explore new means and methods of bearing witness to the Gospel amid the challenges of our contemporary world”.
In his message, the Pope reflected on how, in his Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, he invited the whole Church ‘to go forth.’

Pope to Academy for Life: Promote humanism of fraternity
15 January 2019, 12:11
On the 25th anniversary of the foundation of the Pontifical Academy for Life, Pope Francis calls on its members to promote human fraternity and a humanism of life.
By Christopher Wells
Pope Francis made the “human community” the focus of a letter addressed to the President of the Pontifical Academy for Life on the 25th anniversary of its foundation by Pope St John Paul II.
God's dream
“The human community is God’s dream even from before the creation of the world,” the Pope said, emphasizing that we must “grow in the awareness of our common origin in God’s love and creative act.” He explained that “in our time, the Church is called once more to propose the humanism of the life that bursts forth from God’s passion for human beings.”

(CNA/EWTN News).-
Pope Francis approved Tuesday the next step in the canonization causes of 17 women from four countries, including the martyrdom of 14 religious sisters killed in Spain at the start of the Spanish Civil War
.
After meeting with the prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Cardinal Angelo Becciu, Jan. 15, the pope gave his approval to the declaration of the martyrdom of Sr. Maria del Carmen and 13 companions, all religious sisters of the Order of Franciscan Conceptionists, who were killed in Madrid in 1936.
Francis also approved a miracle attributed to the intercession of the Swiss laywoman Bl. Marguerite Bays, paving the way for her canonization in 2019.

Analysis: The fall of Cardinal Wuerl
Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Administrator of the Archdioce of Washington, D.C. Credit: Bohumil Petrik/CNA
By Ed Condon
Washington D.C., Jan 14, 2019 / 05:30 pm
(CNA).-
For the last six months, Cardinal Donald Wuerl has managed to keep his head above water amid dogged and persistent criticism of his leadership. The cardinal managed to draw praise from the pope even while his priests and parishioners called for his ouster from Washington, DC, and he managed to remain in a leadership position in Washington’s archdiocese even amid a growing body of concern about his ability to lead a diocese at all
.
But this week, Wuerl seems to have reached the end of whatever combination of luck and skill has kept him on his feet.
It now looks clear that Wuerl’s mandate to lead, and whatever was left of his legacy as a reformer, are gone. All that is left now is for the pope to announce his successor, and for Wuerl to make his quiet exit from public life.
CNA reported last week that in 2004 Wuerl was made aware of an allegation that Archbishop Theodore McCarrick had engaged in inappropriate behavior with seminarians. This was a surprise to some, since Wuerl has denied for months that he had ever heard even rumors about McCarrick’s alleged sexual behavior.
Set against last week’s revelation, Wuerl’s seven months of denial appear to undercut completely his decades-long career, which until the events of the last year was marked by a reputation for competence and reliability.
After months of repeated and increasingly narrow denials, news that Wuerl forwarded 14 years ago a direct accusation against McCarrick to Rome is seen nearly everywhere as the final blow to the cardinal’s credibility.
Wuerl is the Archdiocese of Washington’s apostolic administrator, essentially a placeholder for his own successor. His resignation as Washington’s archbishop was accepted by Pope Francis in October 2018. At that time, the move was widely understood as a response to the cumulative weight of scandal following the McCarrick revelations and the July release of a Pennsylvania grand jury report on clerical sexual abuse, in which he was named more than 200 times.
Francis accepted Wuerl’s resignation as archbishop with reluctance, heaping praise on the cardinal as he did so.

Pope at General Audience: address God as a child would his father
16 January 2019, 14:53
Pope Francis at General Audience in the Paul VI Hall (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis continued his catechesis on the "Our Father" during the weekly General Audience in the Paul VI Hall, telling those present always to trust in His love.
By Linda Bordoni
Elaborating on the concept of “Father”, Pope Francis assured the faithful that the Lord “will not hide his face from us” nor “will he close himself in silence” because, as our Father, He never looses sight of us and loves us unconditionally even when we think we are unworthy.
The Pope explained that there is also something maternal in the love of the Father, who accompanies and nurtures the development of our new life in Christ as his adoptive sons and daughters.
