As the new National Shrine of San Antonio de Padua of the Philippines was inaugurated this week, Pope Francis sent his greetings to the faithful hoping it will continue to be ‘a centre of constant missionary outreach’.

As San Pablo Diocese welcomed its first national shrine in the heritage town of Pila, in the Province of Laguna, the Holy Father said he was praying that devotees may all be renewed in the love of Christ”.

Archbishop Romulo Valles of Davao, the president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), presided over the Mass for the declaration of the National Shrine of San Antonio de Padua on April 23.

“May the shrine truly be a sanctuary where the thirsty come to drink in the midst of their journey and the centre of constant missionary outreach,”  said the message of Pope Francis, read out during the Mass by Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, Archbishop Gabriele Caccia.

Pope Francis on Saturday encouraged public authorities in their commitment to the common good working for a truly sustainable development and caring for our common home, the Earth.

Roads and schools

“You are well aware of the importance of safe schools and roads for regular civil life and as an indispensable background for any orderly development,” the Pope told some 100 representatives of the Union of the Provinces of Italy (UPI) on Saturday.

The Pope noted that the union that brings together all the provinces of Italy are committed to the common good, largely through safeguarding the soil, especially in risk-prone areas, maintaining road networks that link small towns with large cities, and managing secondary schools and their safety and operation.

Investing money and human resources wisely in order to prevent disruption, dysfunction and degradation, he pointed out, can lead to substantial saving and economic advantage.

Pope's video message for the first anniversary of Panmunjom Declaration for Peace
27 April 2019, 09:24

In a video message sent on Saturday, Pope Francis hopes that the first anniversary celebration of Panmunjom Declaration for Peace Prosperity and Unification of the Korean Peninsula may offer hope to all Koreans that a future based on unity, dialogue and fraternal solidarity is indeed possible.
By Vatican News

One year after the historic meeting between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, in the village of Panmunjon, on the border between the two states, Pope Francis, in a video message, recalls the “Declaration for Peace, Prosperity and the Unification of the Korean Peninsula”, signed in the House of Peace. In 1953, the same location saw the signing of the armistice that marked the end of the Korean War.

May this celebration offer hope to all that a future based on unity, dialogue and fraternal solidarity is indeed possible”, Pope Francis says in his message. “Through patient and persistent efforts, the pursuit of harmony and concord can overcome division and confrontation.”

Prayer for "a new era of peace for all Koreans"

Francis concludes his message with the prayer “that this anniversary of the Panmunjom Declaration may bring about a new era of peace for all Koreans”.  And he invokes upon all the inhabitants of the Peninsula “an abundance of divine blessings”.

Beatification of four modern martyrs to the faith in Argentina
27 April 2019, 13:09

The Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Cardinal Angelo Becciu, presides over the beatification in Argentina of Bishop Enrique Angelelli, Fr Carlos Murias, Fr Gabriel Longueville, and lay catechist Wenceslao Pedernera. All were assassinated in 1976 during Argentina’s “dirty war”.
By Seàn-Patrick Lovett

The first person to call them “martyrs” was the then Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Jorge Bergoglio, when he celebrated a memorial Mass for them in the Cathedral of La Rioja. Bishop Angelelli “shed his blood” for preaching the Gospel, said the future Pope Francis in his homily, and “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church”.

The meaning of martyrdom

On Saturday morning, Cardinal Angelo Becciu, returned to the meaning of martyrdom when he celebrated their Beatification Mass in La Rioja City Park. “Their witness frustrates the claim to live selfishly or to build a model of society that is closed and without reference to moral and spiritual values”, he said. “The Martyrs exhort us…to be heralds of peace, agents of justice, and witnesses of solidarity”.

Togolese President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe shakes hands with Pope Francis during a private audience at the Vatican.
Among the issues that the Holy See and Togolese delegations discussed during the April 29 meetings was the Church’s contribution to Togo and the challenges facing West and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Pope Francis on Monday received in audience in the Vatican, President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé of Togo, the Holy See Press Office said in a brief statement.  Gnassingbé later met Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Vatican Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.

The Vatican said that “during the cordial discussions, the good existing relations between the Holy See and Togo were evoked, as well as the prospects of their further consolidation.”  In this context, the two sides focused on the current situation of the West African nation, “underlining the contribution of the Catholic Church to the integral development of the Togolese population, especially through her commitment in the fields of education and healthcare.”

A look at the College of Cardinals after Polish cardinal’s 80 birthday
Cindy Wooden  Apr 29, 2019
CATHOLIC NEWS SERVICE

ROME - Polish Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, the former archbishop of Krakow and longtime secretary to St. John Paul II, celebrated his 80th birthday April 27, ending his eligibility to vote in a conclave.

With his birthday, the College of Cardinals returns to having 120 cardinal electors, the maximum limit established by St. Paul VI, but frequently set aside for months at a time over the past three decades.

The Catholic Church currently has 222 cardinals, who come from 88 nations.

The 120 cardinals under 80 years of age and, therefore, eligible to enter a conclave, come from 65 countries, a result of Pope Francis’s practice of naming several cardinals from countries that have never had one before.

Pope at Mass: ‘may the Holy Spirit be the protagonist of our lives’
30 April 2019, 13:04

Pope Francis celebrates Mass at the Casa Santa Marta  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis celebrated Mass on Tuesday morning inviting the faithful to make room for the Holy Spirit in their lives.
By Linda Bordoni

Speaking during the homily at Mass in the Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis said we can be reborn  from “our sinful existence” only with "the help of the same power that raised the Lord: the power of God”. That’s why, he continued, “the Lord sent us the Holy Spirit”, because alone, we cannot do it.

He was reflecting on the Gospel of the day in which Jesus tells Nicodemus “You must be born from above”.

Linking this message to Easter and the Lord’s Resurrection, the Pope recalled the fact that in the first apparition of Jesus to the apostles, on the Sunday of the Resurrection, the Lord breathed on them and said: “Receive the Holy Spirit”.

Pope at Audience on Labour Day prays for the unemployed
01 May 2019, 11:38

Pope Francis at the General Audience  (Vatican Media )
Pope Francis marks the Feast Day of St. Joseph, the humble worker, on May 1st, with special prayers for “those who have lost their jobs or are unable to find work”.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis described the low employment rates that mark the current situation across the world as a “global tragedy”.

Addressing the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the General Audience on May 1st, International Labour Day, at the conclusion of the catechesis the Pope asked the patron saint of workers, St. Joseph, to intercede for those who have lost their jobs or are unable to find work.

Catechesis

But first he continued the cycle of catecheses he has dedicated to the “Our Father” in the past weeks. In particular, he reflected on the prayer’s penultimate invocation: “Lead us not into temptation”.  He briefly recalled an ongoing discussion and proposal regarding a possible change in translation in which that invocation could become “abandon us not when in temptation”.

Translation issues

Explaining that “It is with this penultimate invocation that our dialogue with our heavenly Father enters, so to speak, in the midst of the drama of the battle between our freedom and the snares of the evil one” the Pope noted that it is not easy to accurately capture the exact meaning of the original Greek version of the prayer, and that “all modern translations are a little lame”.

However, he said, we can certainly all agree on the fact that God does not seek to put temptations in our way.

Vatican accepts resignation of Bishop McGrath of San Jose
By Hannah Brockhaus

Vatican City, May 1, 2019 / 06:29 am (CNA).- Pope Francis Wednesday accepted the resignation of Bishop Patrick J. McGrath of San Jose, California, who will be automatically succeeded by his coadjutor Bishop Oscar Cantú.

McGrath, 73, was bishop of San Jose for nearly 20 years, and before that was coadjutor bishop of the diocese for an additional one year.

Citing the wish to let a younger man become bishop, McGrath last year asked the Holy See permission to retire before turning 75, which is when bishops are required by canon law to submit letters of resignation for consideration by the pope.

McGrath was hospitalized last November after a serious fall, which caused a "slight fracture of a disc in his back," according to a diocesan spokesperson.

Pope Francis on Thursday expressed concern over the re-emergence of aggressive feelings against foreigners, especially immigrants, as well as a growing nationalism that neglects the common good, saying such trends compromise international cooperation, mutual respect and the sustainable development goals of the United Nations.

Speaking to some 50 members of the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, the Holy Father also expressed fears over the growing threat of nuclear confrontation that risks cancelling the progress of the recent past and multiplies the risk of war.

Pope tells Argentina bishops he wants to make a homecoming soon
Inés San Martín   May 3, 2019

ROME - Despite stating at the outset that he didn’t like travel and didn’t plan to do much of it, during the first six years of his pontificate Pope Francis made close to 30 international trips, including visiting virtually every country of Latin America. Yet there’s one glaring exception: His home country, Argentina.

Speaking with a group of Argentine bishops on Thursday, Francis expressed his desire to go home in the near future, perhaps as soon as 2020, though participants in the meeting said no firm commitment was made.

“He repeatedly expressed his desire to visit us,” said Archbishop Andres Stanovnik of Corrientes, “but the challenge is his agenda.”

Speaking with a group of Argentine journalists writing for Argentinian news outlets in St. Peter’s Square after a two-hour meeting with Francis, Archbishop Victor Manuel Fernandez of La Plata said the pope gave no confirmation or denial that a homecoming could happen next year.
