Pope in North Macedonia: Saint Mother Teresa a witness to God’s love

On his one-day Apostolic Journey to North Macedonia, Pope Francis stops to pray at the Mother Teresa Memorial House in the Saint’s birthplace of Skopje.
By Vatican News

When Mother Teresa was born, the city of Skopje was part of the Kosovo Vilayet of the Ottoman Empire. Today it is the capital of North Macedonia. In 1963, an earthquake destroyed the church of the Sacred Heart where she was baptized. But in 2009 a futuristic structure called the Mother Teresa Memorial House was erected on the spot.

Pope Francis visited the Memorial House soon after his arrival in North Macedonia on Tuesday morning. Before greeting a number of poor people assisted by Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity, the Pope prayed before the relics of the Saint in the chapel.

Pope at Mass in North Macedonia: hunger for God, fraternity, encounter and shared feast
07 May 2019, 13:09

Pope Francis at Mass in Skopje, North Macedonia, May 7, 2019.   (Vatican Media)
In a homily during Mass in Macedonia Square in the capital, Skopje, on May 7, Pope Francis reflected on Jesus the “bread of life” who satisfies the true hunger of man’s heart and how the followers of Jesus can satisfy this hunger in their brothers and sisters.
By Robin Gomes

Pope Francis on Tuesday urged the Catholics of North Macedonia to break and share themselves with others as Jesus did in the Eucharist.  Jesus “invites us to break and share ourselves together with Him, and to be part of that miraculous multiplication that desires to reach out and touch, with tenderness and compassion, every corner of this city, this country, and this land,” the Pope urged in his homily in Macedonia Square, in the North Macedonian capital, Skopje.

He took his cue from the day’s Gospel where Jesus says, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst” (Jn 6:35).

The last public event of the Pope’s Apostolic Journey to North Macedonia was an encounter with the Church’s ministers and missionaries.

In his prepared remarks, Pope Francis thanked God for the presence of the Latin and Byzantine rites in the Balkan nation.

“I can see the Church breathing fully with both her lungs – the Latin rite and the Byzantine rite – and taking in the ever new and renewing air of the Holy Spirit.”

He said both lungs are necessary and complementary, since they “help us better to taste the beauty of the Lord.”

On his visit to North Macedonia, Pope Francis highlights priorities of his papacy.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis was able to hit on some of the key themes of his papacy during his whirlwind, one day-visit to the country of North Macedonia.

In his first address, to leaders of civil society, Pope Francis noted North Macedonia’s position as a meeting place for various cultures and religions. In particular, he praised the country for having found “a peaceful and enduring coexistence” rooted in the “multi-ethnic and multi-religious countenance” of the people, which he called the nation’s “most precious patrimony”.

Civil appeals court dismisses legal challenge, says Sheen's body can go to Peoria

Venerable Fulton Sheen. (public domain)
Albany, N.Y., May 6, 2019 / 05:01 pm (CNA).- The New York Court of Appeals has dismissed an appeal of an earlier judgement allowing Venerable Fulton Sheen’s remains to be moved to the Cathedral of St. Mary in Peoria, in accordance with his family’s wishes.

The May 2 dismissal of the Archdiocese of New York’s appeal could pave the way for the Illinois-born archbishop’s beatification.

“After almost three years of litigation, the New York Archdiocese’ legal arguments have now been rejected at all three levels of the New York state court system,” the Diocese of Peoria said May 6.

“Although the New York Archdiocese may technically have legal options remaining, they are contrary to the wishes of Archbishop Sheen and his family, and would serve no genuine purpose except to delay the eventual transfer of Archbishop Sheen’s remains,” it added.

Pope Francis meets with members of the Pontifical Biblical Institute who are marking their 110th anniversary with an International Interreligious Conference.
By Lydia O’Kane

This year the Pontifical Biblical Institute is celebrating the 110th anniversary of its foundation. To mark this occasion, the institute is holding an international conference entitled, “Jesus and the Pharisees: an Interdisciplinary Reappraisal”.

In prepared remarks to members on Thursday in the Vatican, Pope Francis focused on the conference’s theme. He told those gathered that recent study had come to realize that less is known about the Pharisees than previous generations thought. “We are less certain about their origins and about many of their teachings and practices”, he said.

Pope Francis on Thursday presided over a prayer meeting with some 500 minority Roma and Sinti people and expressed his pain at the discrimination and racial hatred they face.
By Robin Gomes

Pope Francis on Thursday expressed his closeness with the minority Roma and Sinti people of Rome saying he suffers and is greatly pained when he hears about insults, racial hatred and violence against them.   “This is not civilization…  Love is civilization,”  the Pope told some 500 of them during a prayer meeting in the Vatican.

The initiative organized by the Migrantes Foundation of the Italian bishops’ conference (CEI) was attended by pastoral workers, CEI president Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti and others.  The prayer meeting came in the wake of violent protests by residents of a Rome periphery against the allotment of an apartment in a government housing complex to a nomad family

New norms for the whole Church against those who abuse or cover up
09 May 2019, 10:57

Pope Francis’ Motu proprio, "Vos estis lux mundi", establishes new procedures for reporting abuse and violence, and ensures that Bishops and Religious Superiors are held accountable for their actions. It includes the obligation for clerics and religious to report abuse. Every Diocese must have a system that allows the public to submit reports easily.
By Andrea Tornielli

"Vos estis lux mundi”. “You are the light of the world… Our Lord Jesus Christ calls every believer to be a shining example of virtue, integrity and holiness”. The Gospel of Matthew provides the title and first words of Pope Francis’ new Motu proprio dedicated to the fight against sexual abuse committed by clerics and religious, as well as the actions or omissions of Bishops and Religious Superiors that in any way interfere with or fail to investigate abuse. The Pope recalls that “the crimes of sexual abuse offend Our Lord, cause physical, psychological and spiritual damage to the victims and harm the community of the faithful", and mentions the special responsibility of the Successors of the Apostles to prevent these crimes. The document represents another result of the Meeting on the Protection of Minors held in the Vatican in February 2019. It establishes new procedural rules to combat sexual abuse and to ensure that Bishops and Religious Superiors are held accountable for their actions. It establishes universal norms, which apply to the whole Catholic Church.

JUST IN: Pope Signs Motu Proprio ‘Vos Estis Lux Mundi’ (New Norms for Whole Church Against Those Who Abuse or Cover Up)
New Law Goes Into Effect June 1, Which Includes Legal Obligation for Clerics and Religious to Report Abuse, as Well as Its Cover up
May 09, 2019 12:20•Deborah Castellano Lubov

Pope Francis has signed ‘Vos Estis Lux Mundi’, new norms for the whole Church against those who abuse or cover up, which mark the second important step following the February 21-24 Summit in the Vatican on the Protection of Minors.

The Summit had brought together the presidents of the national bishops’ conferences worldwide, and had anticipated three immediate action steps: (1) the publishing of a motu proprio on the protection of minors for the Vatican City State (that was published a month after the Summit, (2) an anti-abuse ‘vademecum’ for the Universal Church, to explain to bishops clearly how to address cases of abuse and react accordingly, and (3) to create ‘task forces’ to help dioceses around the world that may need help in implementing the appropriate measures to protect minors.

The first step taken a month after the Summit involved the publishing of legislation regarding the Vatican City State. Three documents – the laws on the protection of minors in Vatican City State, the Motu proprio which applies the norms to the Roman Curia, and the Guidelines for the Vicariate of Vatican City –, were acts to “reinforce the protection of minors by strengthening the normative framework.”

Today’s document establishes new procedures for reporting abuse and violence, ensures bishops and religious superiors are held accountable for their actions, and includes the obligation for clerics and religious to report abuse.

It mandates that each diocese must have a system set up that allows the public to submit reports of abuse easily.

Below is the statement of the Holy See on the motu proprio, followed by the full  Vatican -provided text of the motu proprio:

Pope to Rome Diocese: “Listen to the city”
10 May 2019, 11:50

Pope Francis speaks to the clergy of the Diocese of Rome  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis met with the clergy of the Diocese of Rome in the Basilica of St. John Lateran on Thursday, inviting them to go forward in their ministry “listening to the city”.
By Linda Bordoni

During the evening meeting with the clergy of Rome, Pope Francis focused on two themes that concern its pastoral journey: learn the lessons of the past and be open to reconciliation.

Commenting on the fact that the parishes and other ecclesial realities of the Rome area have just concluded their assessments of the work done in the past two years and are looking ahead to the programme for the coming year, the Pope said his appeal to them is: “listen to the city”.

He encouraged those present to “follow the Holy Spirit” who, he said, does not necessarily “love balance and straight-forwardness”, warning them against the temptation of wanting to “settle things, putting everything right”.

Pope at Mass: St. Paul, hard-headed but not hard-hearted
10 May 2019, 11:49

Pope Francis preaches at the morning Mass  (Vatican Media)
In his homily at Mass in the Casa Santa Marta on Friday, Pope Francis invites Christians to be docile to the voice of the Lord, after the model of St. Paul.

Taking his cue from the conversion of St. Paul on the road to Damascus, narrated in the first reading at daily Mass, Pope Francis said the Apostle to the Gentiles was hard-headed but not hard-hearted.

The Holy Father said the moment of his conversion “marked a change in the course of Salvation History”. It exposed the Church’s universality and its openness to “pagans, Gentiles, and those who were not Israelites”, which, the Pope said, the Lord permitted because “it was important”.

The Papal Foundation is comprised of American Catholics who dedicate financial resources to supporting the Pope and various projects throughout the world.

Pope Francis welcomed their support on Friday, in an address to its members who are on pilgrimage to Rome.

“It is a joy for me to be with you once again and to express my gratitude for the generous support you offer to me and to the Church in so many parts of the world,” he said.

The Holy Father prayed that their pilgrimage to the tombs of the apostles and martyrs, occurring during the Easter Season, strengthen them in their “fidelity to the Lord and his Church.”

The group was accompanied to the meeting by the Chairman of The Papal Foundation, Cardinal Seán O'Malley.

Vatican message for Ramadan urges universal fraternity
10 May 2019, 11:40

In a message for Islam’s holy month of Ramadan and Id al-Fitr, the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue has released a message, urging Christians and Muslims worldwide to build bridges of brotherhood and promote the culture of dialogue.
By Robin Gomes

The Vatican is calling on Christians and Muslims worldwide to promote human fraternity and harmonious existence by building bridges of friendship and promoting a culture of dialogue where violence is rejected and the human person is respected.

The Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue (PCID) made the invitation in a message to wish Muslims worldwide a peaceful and fruitful celebration of the fasting month Ramadan that ends with Id al-Fitr.

“The month of Ramadan with its dedication to fasting, prayer and almsgiving, is also a month for strengthening the spiritual bonds we share in Muslim-Christian friendship,” notes the message entitled, “Christians and Muslims: Promoting Universal Fraternity”, signed by PCID Secretary, Bishop Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot.

Pope Francis: Sport, a school that teaches rules and respect
11 May 2019, 13:17

Pope Francis with members of the Italian Sports Centre  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis meets with members of the Italian Sports Centre which is celebrating its 75th anniversary

This year the Italian Sports Centre is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its foundation. The Centre has more than one million two hundred thousand members and is made up of clubs and sports associations, as well as members and affiliated parish sports groups throughout Italy.

Greeting the 400 members in the Clementine Hall on Saturday, which included young people and coaches, Pope Francis noted how the Italian Sports Centre offered young people, through sport, a healthy and positive lifestyle, based on the Christian vision of the person and society. Sport, in fact, he said, “is a great school, provided that you live it with self-control and respect for others.”
