Pope to young economists: 'together for global change'
11 May 2019, 12:54

The Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi
Pope Francis sends a letter to Young Economists and Entrepreneurs Worldwide who have been invited to participate in an event scheduled for March 2020.
By Linda Bordoni

I am writing, Pope Francis says in his letter, “to invite you take part in an initiative very close to my heart”, an event he says, that will allow him to meet young economists who are interested in “a different kind of economy: one that brings life not death, one that is inclusive and not exclusive, humane and not dehumanizing, one that cares for the environment and does not despoil it.”

The event he is referring to is a conference to be held in Assisi from 26 to 28 March 2020 entitled “Economy of Francis.”

The need to re-animate the economy

Expressing his belief that there is a need to “re-animate” global economy, the Pope says Assisi, a city that symbolizes a humanism of fraternity, is the right place.

“Saint John Paul II chose Assisi as the icon of a culture of peace.  For me, it is also a fitting place to inspire a new economy” he writes.

By Robin Gomes

The Vatican is inviting the world’s Buddhists and Christians to work together to uphold and promote the rights and dignity of women and girls.

The Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue (PCID) made the call in a message released on Saturday in view of the Buddhist festival of Vesakh, which will be celebrated in most countries on May 19.

Sometimes informally called "Buddha's Birthday", Vesakh actually commemorates the birth, enlightenment and death of Gautama Buddha, and is celebrated on different days in different countries.

Entitled, “Buddhists and Christians: Promoting the Dignity and Equal Rights of Women and Girls,” the message, signed by PCID Secretary Bishop Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot, is inspired by the Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together, signed in Abu Dhabi on 4 February 2019 by Pope Francis and Grand Imam Sheikh Ahmad Al-Tayyeb of Al-Azhar.

Pope Francis ordains 19 deacons during Mass in St Peter Basilica on the 56th World Day of Prayer for Vocations.

Against the glorious backdrop of St Peter’s Basilica, Pope Francis on Sunday ordained 19 men to the priesthood. His homily, as in the past, was based on a pre-set formula for Masses of Ordination performed by bishops.

The Good Shepherd

In it, he told the new priests to, “always keep in mind the example of the Good Shepherd who came not to be served but to serve, and to seek out and rescue those who were lost.” He also made it clear that what they were entering into was "not a cultural association or a trade union". “You will be part of the ministry of Christ”, he said.

During the Regina Coeli following Mass on Sunday, Pope Francis focused his attention on the Gospel of the day which recounts the story of Jesus presenting himself as the true Shepherd of God's people. This Gospel, he said, “invites us to live our relationship with Christ with full confidence and familiarity.”

Pope's sorrow over attack on Catholic church in Burkina Faso
13 May 2019, 11:04

Pope Francis expresses his pain over an attack by gunmen on a Catholic church in Burkina Faso after Sunday Mass in which six people were killed, including a priest.

The interim director of the Press Office of the Holy See, Alessandro Gisotti, has posted a tweet expressing the grief of Pope Francis.   He said, “The Holy Father has learned with sorrow about the news of the attack on the church in Dablo, Burkina Faso. He prays for the victims, for their families and for the entire Christian community in the country.”

The attack took place in the small town of Dablo, about 200 kilometres north of the capital, Ouagadougou.

New Orthodox schism stalls ecumenical dialogue, Vatican official says

(Credit: Murad Sezer/Reuters via CNS.)
ROME — A significant rupture between Orthodox churches in Ukraine has brought the official theological dialogue between Catholics and Orthodox to a standstill, according to a Vatican official involved in the talks.

“The ecumenical dialogue is a journey. At this point in the journey, we have a new problem,” said Bishop Brian Farrell, secretary of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.

In January 2019, Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople signed a decree recognizing an independent church in Ukraine despite strong criticism from the Russian Orthodox church, which sees Ukraine as part of its church territory. The Patriarch of Moscow, in protest, excommunicated Bartholomew and severed communion with him and his followers.

The Orthodox schism in Ukraine has been reported as the most significant ecclesial fracture since the original break between Catholics and Orthodox in 1054. The Vatican has not taken an official position on the split, insisting it is an internal Orthodox matter.

Delegates from the Russian church, which is the largest Orthodox Christian body, have withdrawn from common projects with the Ecumenical Patriarchate, including the theological dialogue with the Catholic Church.

“We are in a pause, waiting to see how this question can resolve itself,” Farrell said.

Cardinal Krajewski: I have reactivated the light for the survival of families and children
13 May 2019, 12:27

Cardinal Krajewski  (AFP or licensors)
The Papal Almoner explained the reason which led him to reactivate the electricity in an occupied building in Rome. The Cardinal called it a “desperate and humanitarian gesture to help families struggling to survive.”
Amedeo Lomonaco – Vatican City

Having been to Lesbos to bring Pope Francis' solidarity to the migrants of the Greek island's refugee camps, the Apostolic Almoner, Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, was informed of the serious situation in which over 400 people were present, including numerous children, in a busy Roman building, without electricity and hot water for days. These services had been suspended by the company that provides the energy for lack of payment. The cardinal felt obliged to carry out a humanitarian gesture and so personally proceeded to reactivate the electricity supply to the building. The cardinal made this gesture aware of the possible consequences it may face, in the belief that it was necessary to do so for the sake of these families.

Matteo Salvini, deputy prime minister of Italy, told a crowd at a rally May 12 that the occupants of the building owed the electric company 300,000 euros (about $337,000) and he would be sending the cardinal the bill.

"I'll pay it. No problem," the cardinal told the newspaper. "And if one arrives, I'll pay a fine as well."

The Vatican, through Cardinal Krajewski's office, had been assisting the residents for some time, regularly sending food and medicine as well as doctors.

Pope Francis on May 13 authorized eight decrees on the miracles and heroic virtues of 8 men and women, five of them Italians, two Brazilians and a Spaniard. Two miracles have been cleared for canonization and another for beatification.

Pope Francis on Monday afternoon took eight men and women a step closer to sainthood, two of them cleared for canonization.

The Pope received in audience Cardinal Angelo Becciu, the prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints and authorized the promulgation of decrees on three miracles and five heroic virtues.

Two miracles recognized for canonization concern the two nuns:

Italian Sister, Blessed Giuseppina Vannini, the foundress of the Daughters of St. Camillus, who was born in Rome (Italy) on 7 July 1859 and died there on 23 February 1911.

Brazilian Sister, Blessed Dulce Lopes Pontes, of the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God.  She was born in São Salvador da Bahia on 26 May 1914 and died there on 22 May 1992.

Holy See reiterates promotion and defence of family
14 May 2019, 15:31

Family - "the civilization of love".
Archbishop Ivan Jurkovic, Holy See’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva, addressed a conference in view of the May 15 UN's International Day of Families.
By Robin Gomes

The Holy See is calling for the promotion of the family as the “fundamental and basic unit of all societies”, saying its defence needs to be sustained for the common good of our world community.

“The family, after all, is, in many ways, the first school of how to be human and at the same time the family is the centre and the heart of what Paul VI called ‘the civilization of love’,”  said Archbishop Ivan Jurkovic, Holy See’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva, on Tuesday.

He was addressing an interreligious conference on families organized by the World Council of Churches (WCC) in view of the May 15 UN International Day of Families.

Pope’s Marian pilgrimage to Transylvania shines light on ethnic Hungarians
Victor Gaetan   May 14, 2019
CATHOLIC NEWS SERVICE

Pope Francis will visit the region's largest Marian shrine in Romania June 1, 2019, where an annual Pentecost Saturday pilgrimage draws thousands, mainly ethnic Hungarians, to Csíksomlyo (Hungarian) or Sumuleu Ciuc (Romanian) as seen in this 2018 photo. Pilgrims commemorate a 1567 victory against forced conversion. (Credit: Dezso Laszlo/CNS.)
When Pope Francis visits Romania May 31-June 1, he will helicopter to Sumuleu Ciuc, site of the country’s only major Marian shrine and an important place of pilgrimage for Hungarian Catholics.

Father Zoltan Olah, press officer for the pope’s visit, has made the pilgrimage eight times, traveling more than 140 miles each time with students by bicycle to get there.

“People come by train, bus, bike, motorcycle,” he told Catholic News Service, explaining how thousands of people process with banners showing images of local patron saints and Mary.

The pilgrimage is “mostly a Hungarian event,” which serves as “a symbol for the Hungarian presence in Transylvania and, somehow, a Catholic and Hungarian symbol of resistance,” Olah said.

Although the Sumuleu Ciuc pilgrimage was banned under communism, it dates to 1567, when a Hungarian ruler tried to force Catholics to convert to Protestantism. They resisted, holding to the belief that they were protected by Mary in defeating the prince’s troops.

A statue of Our Lady of Csiksomlyo, the Hungarian name for Sumuleu Ciuc, stands in a nearby Franciscan Catholic Church. It shows Mary standing on the moon, holding an infant Jesus and a scepter. In 1798, a local bishop declared the statue “miraculous” and crowned it. The Vatican has not recognized any miracle related to it, however.

Pope at General Audience: Lord’s prayer confronts full range of evil
15 May 2019, 10:11

Pope Francis waves to the crowds at the General Audience  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis focuses his catechesis at the Wednesday General Audience on the final petition of the Lord’s prayer, saying Jesus is at our side to deliver us from all manner of evil.
By Devin Watkins

“Christian prayer does not close its eyes on life,” said Pope Francis. “It is a filial prayer, not an infantile one.”

The Holy Father made those remarks in the catechesis portion of his weekly General Audience.

Reflecting on the final petition of the Lord’s prayer, he said Jesus invites us to ask God to “deliver us from evil” because “life is fraught with difficulty.”

“If these last lines of the Our Father were excluded, how could sinners, the persecuted, and desperate and dying souls pray?” he asked.

Pope Francis: Never err in seeking dialogue
15 May 2019, 13:03

Pope Francis greeted members of the International Jewish Committee for Interreligious Consultations (IJCIC) following the General Audience, telling them dialogue is the better way to build tolerance and respect between religions.

Pope Francis took time at the end of his General Audience Wednesday to greet members of the International Jewish Committee for Interreligious Consultations that is holding its twenty-fourth meeting which the Pope described as being like a “general assembly of all those professionally engaged in Jewish-Catholic dialogue.”

The fruits of Nostra Aetate

In written remarks handed to the Committee members, the Pontiff recalled that from the promulgation of Nostra Aetate (Declaration on the Relation of the Church with Non-Christian Religions of the Second Vatican Council) until now, Jewish-Catholic dialogue has borne good fruit.  We share a rich spiritual patrimony, he said, that can and must be ever more esteemed and appreciated as we grow in mutual understanding, fraternity and shared commitment on behalf of others.”

Pope urges Lasallians to care for discarded through education
16 May 2019, 12:53

Pope Francis greets members of the De La Salle Brothers  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis invites the Brothers of the Christian Schools to continue in their passion to educate those discarded by society and to promote a “culture of the resurrection” that offers hope for a new life.
By Devin Watkins

The Brothers of the Christian Schools, also known as Lasallians, are commemorating the 300th anniversary of the death of their Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle.

He established the Institute of religious brothers in France, in 1680, to provide quality education for poor children.

In an address on Thursday, Pope Francis praised St. de La Salle as “a pioneer in the field of education, who created an innovative education system for his time.”

The Pope said the Saint’s legacy is still remarkable today for its vision of the school, the concept of the teacher, and innovative teaching methods.

“Robotics, artificial intelligence (AI) and humanity: science, ethics, and policy”, is the theme of a two-day international conference that kicked off in the Vatican on Thursday.

The Vatican’s Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences (PASS) and the Pontifical Academy of Sciences (PAS) are jointly organizing the May 16-17 multidisciplinary conference at the Casina Pio IV inside Vatican City.

A note ahead of the conference explained that recent advances in machine learning (commonly referred to as artificial intelligence, AI), and robotics have aroused widespread interest and debate regarding their benefits and drawbacks on humanity.

Pope Francis names Bishop Baldacchino to lead Las Cruces diocese
By Hannah Brockhaus

Vatican City, May 15, 2019 / 04:03 am (CNA).- Pope Francis Wednesday appointed Bishop Peter Baldacchino to head the Diocese of Las Cruces, New Mexico – making him the first diocesan bishop associated with the Neocatechumenal Way to serve in a mainland U.S. diocese.

Baldacchino, 58, has been an auxiliary bishop of Miami, Florida, since 2014. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Newark in 1996.

As a seminarian in Newark, Baldacchino studied at the Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall University but lived at the Redemptoris Mater Archdiocesan Missionary Seminary.

Baldacchino’s formation was in part guided by the Neocatechumenal Way, a post-baptismal itinerary of Christian formation first approved by Pope Paul VI and supported by each of the subsequent popes.

Seminarians who discern their vocation while involved with the Neocatechumenal Way are encouraged to place special emphasis on the universal missionary character of the priesthood and offer themselves, at the discretion of their local bishop, in service to the New Evangelization anywhere in the world.

The Society of African Missions is a missionary order of priests who serve Catholics in Africa, often in rural areas, as well as communities of African origin in other parts of the world.

Pope Francis met Friday with participants in the Society’s ongoing General Assembly.

On May 11th, the Assembly elected Fr. Antonio Porcellato as the new Superior General. He takes over from Fr. Fachtna O’Driscoll, who has completed his 6-year mandate.

Pope to healthcare workers: treat the sick as people, not as numbers
17 May 2019, 12:18

Pope Francis meets members of the Italian Catholic Association of Healthcare Workers   (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis meets the Italian Catholic Association of Healthcare Workers on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of its foundation.
By Lydia O'Kane

At the core of the Pope’s discourse to members of the Association was the defense, respect and promotion of life.

He thanked those gathered on Friday for their “irreplaceable service” to people who are most vulnerable or in need of assistance because they are sick, or elderly, or marginalized.

Noting how in recent decades, the system of care and treatment had changed radically, the Pope also pointed out that along with advances in technology, ever greater problems of an ethical nature were also being presented.

Pope Francis underlined that, “any medical practice or intervention on the human being must first be evaluated carefully to see if it actually respects life and human dignity.”

Conscientious objection

The practice of conscientious objection, the Pontiff stressed, in extreme cases where the integrity of human life is endangered, was based “on the personal need not to act differently from one's own ethical conviction, but also represents a sign for the health care environment in which one finds oneself, as well as for the patients themselves and their families”, he said.

Archbishop Scicluna to visit Poland amid abuse crisis

Archbishop Charles Scicluna of Malta
The Bishops of Poland invite Archbishop Charles Scicluna to hold a study day on the protection of young people and children. His visit comes amid public outcry over a documentary on clerical abuse.
By Vatican News

“The Apostolic Nuncio to Poland, Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, has expressed the closeness and solidarity of the Holy Father towards victims of abuse,” according to the ad interim Director of the Holy See Press Office, Alessandro Gisotti, who was responding to questions put to him by reporters on Friday.

Archbishop Charles Scicluna, Adjunct Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, is set visit Poland in June at the request of the Polish Bishops.

In 2018, the country's Bishops invited him to conduct a study day on the protection of minors during the Plenary Assembly of the Polish Bishops' Conference, on June 13th, in Swidnica.

Archbishop Scicluna's visit comes on the heels of a recently-released documentary which has provoked public debate about clerical sexual abuse in the country, though the invitation was extended months ago.

“Tell No One” contains testimony from men and women who say they were molested or raped by priests when they were minors.
