Pope at Angelus: ‘true joy is to walk in the company of the Lord'
07 July 2019, 13:30

Pope Francis during the Sunday Angelus  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis speaks of the missionary characteristic of the Church and on how it brings joy, peace and healing.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis focused his catechesis on Sunday on the missionary nature of the Church, pointing out that it must always be joyful and bring peace and healing.

Reflecting on the Gospel reading of the day that tells of when Jesus, in addition to the twelve apostles, sent seventy-two disciples on a mission – because 72 he explained refers to the 72 different nations mentioned in the book of Genesis – the Pope said “this sending anticipates the Church's mission to proclaim the Gospel to all.”

He said that to those disciples Jesus said “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest”.

Pope at Mass: Migrants are symbols of all those rejected by society
08 July 2019, 10:55

Pope Francis presides over Holy Mass for migrants in St Peter’s Basilica, marking the 6th anniversary of his visit to the Italian island of Lampedusa.
By Vatican News

He had been Pope for only 4 months when he made a surprise visit to Lampedusa. It was his first pastoral visit outside Rome. This tiny island, halfway between Sicily and the coast of North Africa, has become one of the main European points of entry for migrants and refugees trying to cross the Mediterranean.

It was on 8 July 2013, that Pope Francis spoke of the “globalization of indifference”. The result, he said on that occasion, is a society that “has forgotten how to weep”.

Pope visits Jesuit headquarters
08 July 2019, 16:56

The General Curia of the Jesuits in Rome
The Vatican Press Office has said that Pope Francis paid a private visit to the General Curia of the Jesuits in Rome on Sunday.

Responding to questions from journalists, the “ad interim” Director of the Holy See Press Office, Alessandro Gisotti, released a statement on Monday, confirming the visit.

“I can confirm that yesterday the Holy Father went for a private visit to the General Curia of the Jesuits where he dined with the Superior General, Father Arturo Sosa, and with his brothers of the Society of Jesus.”

He explained that the Jesuit Pontiff has already privately visited the General Curia and his brother Jesuits in past years in the run-up to the July 31 Feast of St Ignatius of Loyola, who founded the Society of Jesus along with six companions in the 16th century.

French government moves forward on Notre Dame restoration plans
Christopher White  Jul 8, 2019

NEW YORK - Nearly three months after a fire devastated Paris’s famed Notre Dame Cathedral, France’s National Assembly moved closer to enacting legislation to approve the restoration process and timeline for one of the world’s most beloved landmarks.

By a vote of 32 in favor, 7 against, and 8 abstentions, the country’s primary legislative body voted on Wednesday to adopt a resolution that establishes a national plan for accepting donations toward the rebuilding efforts and adheres to French President Emmanuel Macron’s intent to have the work done before Paris plays host to the Olympics in 2024.

This marked the second time the bill came before the National Assembly for consideration after a contentious hearing in May, which did not get the necessary votes to pass, and a vote by the French senate in June.

‘I Would Like to Visit Argentina Next Year,’ Reveals Pope Francis
In An Interview with ‘La Nacion’ Newspaper
July 09, 2019 16:20•Rosa Die Alcolea

In an interview given July 8, 2019, to the Argentine newspaper “La Nacion,” Pope Francis said, “I would like to visit Argentina next year.” He did so discreetly and prudently, expressing again his desire to travel soon to his motherland.

For the time being, this is the only information offered by the Holy Father regarding this possible Apostolic Visit. He established a probable date with the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, but the precise moment is yet to be defined, reported the newspaper.

The interview’s author explained that the Pontiff wishes “to return to the country of his birth, although fleetingly, next year when the spirit of many Argentines has calmed down after the elections to elect  (or re-elect) a President,”

Other topics the journalist of La Nacion” addressed with the Pontiff were his recent meeting with the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, the “frictions with the ultra-conservative sectors” of the Church, to which the Holy Father responded: “I don’t confront them. They can say what they wish. I don’t respond.”

Forensic study of remains may shed light on young woman's disappearance

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- The complex process of examining bones and extracting DNA will be crucial in determining whether the remains in a small Vatican cemetery belong to Emanuela Orlandi, a young woman who disappeared in 1983, a Vatican-appointed forensic anthropologist said.

Andrea Tornielli, editorial director of the Dicastery for Communication, interviewed Giovanni Arcudi, the forensic anthropologist who will lead the scientific investigation of the remains in two tombs in the Vatican's Teutonic Cemetery.

In the interview, published July 10, Arcudi emphasized the need for careful analysis of the remains in the tombs before knowing if they could provide answers to the Orlandi case, which has remained unsolved for more than three decades.

The Vatican agreed to open the tombs and said the process would begin July 11.

Preparation Is Underway for Possible Visit of Pope Francis to Iraq in 2020
Government Unfreezes Part of Credits
July 10, 2019 16:00•Marina Droujinina

The Iraqi Government has unfrozen a part of credits destined to prepare a possible future visit to Iraq of Pope Francis, foreseen for the end of the year 2020, indicated the Vatican Agency Fides, on July 6, 2019. However, up to now the possibility of such a visit has not been officially confirmed by the Holy See.

The first tranche of financing is of three billion Iraqi dinars, namely 2,247 billion euros. It will be allocated to begin the works of urban developments in the cities on the itinerary of the Pope’s trip, revealed Abdul Amir al Hamdani, Iraqi Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Antiquities, in a statement made to a television chain by satellite, taken up by the national media.

Last June 10, on receiving the participants in the Reunion of Aid Agencies for the Oriental Churches (ROACO), the Pope expressed his desire to go to Iraq “next year.”

On June 20, Iraqi President Barhan Salih, sent to the Patriarch of Babylon of the Chaldeans, Cardinal Louis Raphael I Sako, an official letter of invitation addressed to Pope Francis.

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of the Director of the prestigious Sistine Chapel Choir on reaching the end of his term, after leading the papal choir for more than 8 years.

In a brief note on Wednesday, the Holy See Press Office said that Pope Francis has accepted Italian Salesian Monsignor Massimo Palombella’s request to conclude his assignment.  The Holy Father took the decision in consultation with the Congregation of the Salesians of Don Bosco and the Office of the Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff.

The Vatican said the 51-year old priest is now available for a new ministry that will be entrusted to him by his Salesian Congregation.

Pope Benedict XVI had appointed the Salesian priest to the post on 16 October 2010 and Pope Francis reconfirmed him in 2015.

NEW YORK - Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of Louisville, Kentucky and the former president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), announced on Wednesday that he has been diagnosed with bladder and prostate cancer.

Kurtz shared the news of his announcement through his regular column dedicated to the Church’s sex abuse crisis and said that he will soon begin treatment through the Duke University Cancer Institute, which will result in the eventual removal of his bladder and prostate.

“Over the past few months, I have had some health issues that have resulted in medical tests and hospitalizations, and I can now confirm the diagnosis and the treatment plan,” he wrote. “I have been diagnosed with urothelial carcinoma in my bladder and prostate and will take part in a treatment plan that includes immunotherapy and chemotherapy for at least 12 weeks.”

Kurtz, who is 72, has been the archbishop of Louisville since 2007. He served as USCCB president from 2013-2016, during which time he oversaw Pope Francis’s 2015 visit to the United States, and he is currently the chairman of the USCCB’s committee for religious liberty.

The opening of the two 19th century graves in the Vatican’s Teutonic Cemetery in a quest to verify the possible presence of the remains of Emanuela Orlandi, has not yielded any results.

There are no human remains, no coffins, no urns and no bones in the two 19th century graves in the Teutonic Cemetery inside the Vatican where forensic experts were searching for the remains of Emanuela Orlandi.

The 15 year-old-daughter of a Vatican bank employee, whose family lived inside Vatican City, disappeared on June 22, 1983.

A statement by the Holy See Press Office on Thursday confirmed that the operations at the Teutonic Cemetery to verify the hypothesis of the presence of human remains attributable to Emanuela Orlandi ended at 11.15 a.m. and have yielded negative results.

Pope creates Apostolic Exarchy for Ukrainians in Italy
11 July 2019, 12:16

Faithful gathered in the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, the Cathedral Church of the new Exarchy.
A new Exarchy has been erected to provide for the pastoral care of Ukrainian Greek-Catholics living in Italy.

The Holy Father has erected the Apostolic Exarchate for the Ukrainian Catholic faithful of the Byzantine rite residing in Italy. The Holy Father has nominated Cardinal Angelo De Donatis, Vicar General of His Holiness for the Diocese of Rome, as Apostolic Administrator sede vacante [the See being vacant] of the Exarchate.

An Exarchy in an Eastern Catholic particular Church corresponds to an Apostolic Vicariate in the Latin-rite; it is an ecclesiastical circumscription outside the home territory of an Eastern Church, which has not yet been raised to the level of an Eparchy (the Eastern equivalent of a Diocese). Exarchies are understood to be provisional, that is, they are established with the end of growing to the point where they are recognized as an Eparchy.

Pope Francis and the Holy See have expressed grief over the death of Vincent Lambert, the French quadriplegic who has been in a vegetative state for a decade.

The 42-year old passed away Thursday morning at the Sebastopol Hospital in Reims, after medics on July 2 switched off food and water systems that kept him alive since a motorcycle accident in 2008.

“May God the Father welcome Vincent Lambert in His arms,” Pope Francis tweeted.  “Let us not build a civilization that discards persons whose lives we no longer consider to be worthy of living: every life is valuable, always,” the Holy Father added.

Pope marks 25th anniversary of terrorist attack on Jewish center in Buenos Aires
12 July 2019, 17:33

Pope Francis sends a letter to a Jewish center in Argentina to commemorate the 25th anniversary of a terrorist bombing that left 85 people dead and hundreds wounded.
By Linda Bordoni

“25 years have passed since the AMIA tragedy” writes Pope Francis, and every single 18 July “I keep in my heart the families of the victims, both Jews and Christians”.

In a letter to the AMIA Jewish center in Buenos Aires, whose headquarters were destroyed by a terror attack on 18 July 1994 that killed 85 people and wounded over 200 others, the Pope decried “the madness of destroying lives and hopes in the name of religion” and the “blasphemous use of the name of God”.

"We know well that it is not religion that incites and leads to war, but the darkness in the hearts of those who commit irrational acts," he said.

NEW YORK - One year after the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s record-breaking exhibit on the Catholic imagination, the landmark museum is set to display a Vatican owned masterpiece beginning next week.

Beginning July 15, the museum will exhibit Leonardo da Vinci’s “Saint Jerome Praying in the Wilderness,” which is on special loan from the Vatican Museums.

The exhibition of the Renaissance painting, which is supported by the New York Chapter of The Patrons of The Arts in The Vatican Museums, is timed to coincide with the five hundredth anniversary of da Vinci’s death.

The painting of St. Jerome is unfinished and depicts the later years of his life when he lived as a hermit in the desert.

The painting of “Saint Jerome Praying in the Wilderness” will be on display in New York until October 6.

All hymns, all the time: 'Great Catholic Music' makes streaming debut

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Catholics hear hymns in church, but hardly ever on the radio. Now they can augment their weekly diet of hymnody through a new audio web streaming service called Great Catholic Music.

The service launched March 1, just before Lent, and plays a mix of pre-and post-Vatican II hymns and liturgical music all day, every day. "The response so far has been absolutely amazing," said program director Michael Roberts in an interview with Catholic News Service July 11. "The first night that we launched we received an email from someone in Santa Barbara, California, saying, 'Thank you so much.'"

Great Catholic Music is a project of the Living Bread Radio Network, a group of Catholic radio stations in northeast Ohio. But those stations don't play music. Why not?

"I think a lot of it has to do with licensing. It's not cheap to play music on the radio," said Roberts, who worked at a small oldies-format station for seven years which spent $1,000 a month on licensing. "People are just kind of scared to dip their toe in the water of music," he added. "It's easier for a lot of people not to do music" and rely on talk shows, although with Great Catholic Music, "we felt there was a market for it -- and there really is."

Pope Francis to visit Albano Laziale on September 21st
12 July 2019, 17:48

Bishop Marcello Semeraro with Pope Francis
In a letter dedicated to the faithful of Albano, Bishop Marcello Semeraro announces Pope Francis’ future visit to the Cathedral of Albano Laziale.
By Francesca Merlo

The announcement was made by Bishop Marcello Semeraro, who explained in a letter that September 21ist is an important day for the Church in Albano. It is the feast of St Matthew, it is the day Jorge Mario Bergoglio, in 1953, met a priest who proved to be very important for his vocation and it is also the day that  Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, in 2008, visited the Cathedral of Albano.

“Since then”, said Bishop Semeraro, “that date has been a point of reference for celebrating the anniversary of the Dedication of our Cathedral”, which he added has finally finished being restored.

The Pope responded positively to Monsignor Semeraro's request and, therefore, Pope Francis will arrive in Albano Laziale on the afternoon of September 21 and will preside over the celebration of the Holy Eucharist.

Emanuela Orlandi: Holy See's desire for clarity

The investigation at the Teutonic Cemetery inside the Vatican shows the Holy See’s closeness to the Orlandi family
Andrea Tornielli - Vatican City

On the morning of Thursday, July 11, all those present at the opening of the two tombs in the Teutonic Cemetery inside the Vatican were surprised to discover they were empty. There were no human remains, no traces of coffins or urns.

As is known, the Vatican judiciary agreed to carry out this investigation upon the wishes of the family of Emanuela Orlandi, the fifteen-year-old daughter of a Vatican employee who mysteriously disappeared in the centre of Rome in June 1983: an anonymous tip had in fact indicated one of the old tombs of that cemetery as a possible burial place for the remains of the young woman. Two tombs were opened because the Promoter of Justice of Vatican City State, Gian Piero Milano, wanted to verify that that adjacent one, also adorned by an angelic image, contained no remains that could be attributed to the missing girl.

The decision to open both tombs, in the presence of an expert appointed by Emanuela's family, working according to the most advanced technical standards, is a sign of particular attention and human and Christian closeness to the Orlandi family. It is certainly not - as has been said - an admission by the Vatican of a possible involvement in the concealment of a corpse
