Pope prays for reconciliation process ahead of Mozambique visit
30 August 2019, 09:00

Pope Francis sends his greetings to the people of Mozambique ahead of his Apostolic Journey on 4-6 September, asking them to pray for him and for reconciliation in the southern African nation.
By Devin Watkins

The Pope sets off on his Apostolic Journey to Mozambique, Madagascar, and Mauritius next Wednesday.

His first stop is in Maputo, the Mozambiqan capital, where he will meet with civil, interreligious, and Church authorities, and celebrate Mass for local Catholics.

Speaking in Portuguese in a video message sent Friday ahead of his arrival, Pope Francis said his heart reaches out to embrace all the people of Mozambique, even though he is “unable to go beyond the capital”.

Pope taps ex-communications czar who quit amid scandal for new PR role

ROME - In what appears to be a new position, Monsignor Dario Viganò, the former head of Vatican communications forced to resign amid scandal in 2018, on Saturday was named “vice chancellor” of the Pontifical Academies for Sciences and Social Sciences.

The news was announced in an Aug. 31 communique from the Vatican, after rumors began to spread on social media.

Viganò’s appointment to such a high-profile position is significant after the “Lettergate” fiasco last year involving a botched attempt to disguise portions of a letter from Pope emeritus Benedict XVI. A new position in the communications department was created for him while awaiting a new assignment.

Handpicked by Pope Francis to overhaul Vatican communications, Viganò last March came under fire when he released only part of a letter written by Benedict during the launch of a Vatican-published compilation of books about Francis’s theological and philosophical background marking his 5th anniversary as pope.

Pope Francis late at Angelus after being stuck in elevator
01 September 2019, 13:54

Vatican Fire Service  (ANSA)
Pope Francis says “sorry I’m late” after he appears for Angelus later than usual due to a problem with an elevator.

The cheer of the pilgrims and tourists in St Peter’s Square was even louder than usual for Pope Francis at the Sunday Angelus. The Pope appeared a few minutes late at the window of the Apostolic Palace which prompted an outburst of applause when people saw him

Pope Francis apologized for his late appearance, explaining to those gathered that he was stuck in an elevator for 25 minutes and managed to get out thanks to the intervention of the Vatican's Fire Brigade

“I must apologize for the delay”, he said, “but there was an incident: I was locked in the elevator for 25 minutes! There was a drop in voltage and the elevator stopped. Thank God the Fire Brigade came - thank you so much! - and after 25 minutes of work they managed to get it to go. Let's hear it for the Fire Brigade!”

Pope announces 13 new Cardinals for the missionary Church
01 September 2019, 13:22

At the Angelus Pope Francis reads the names of those prelates who will receive the red hat on October 5th, the vigil of the Amazon Synod.

After reciting the Angelus in St Peter’s Square on Sunday, Pope Francis announced a consistory to be held on 5 October for the nomination of 10 new Cardinals. He said that the places where these new Cardinals come from express the missionary vocation of the Church as she continues to announce the merciful love of God to every person on earth. After reading their names, the Pope asked everyone to pray for the new Cardinals so that, confirming their adhesion to Christ, they might help in his ministry as Bishop of Rome for the good of all the faithful Holy People of God.

The names of the new Cardinals are:

1. Bishop Miguel Angel Ayuso Guixot, mccj – President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue – was born in Seville (Spain) in 1952. He professed final vows as a Combini Missionary in 1980 and was ordained a priest the same year, beginning his priestly life as a missionary in Egypt and Sudan until 2002. In 1982 he received a licentiate in Arab and Islamic studies at PISAI in Rome and in 2000, a doctorate in dogmatic theology from the University of Granada. He was professor of Islamic studies in Khartoum and in Cairo, and at the Pontifical Institute of Arab and Islamic studies where he eventually became Dean until 2012. He has led various interreligious meetings in Africa (Egypt, Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia and Mozambique). On 20 June 2012, Pope Benedict XVI nominated him Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. He was consecrated Bishop in March of 2016 with the titular see of Luperciana. This past 25 May he was nominated President of the Pontifical council for Interreligious Dialogue. He has published books and articles in international journals. He knows Spanish, Arabic, English, French and Italian

Pope at Angelus: Jesus invites us to humility and selfless generosity
01 September 2019, 13:36

St Peter's Square during Angelus  (ANSA)
At the Angelus in St Peter’s Square on Sunday, Pope Francis says that Jesus, “invites us to selfless generosity, to open the way for a much greater joy: that of being partakers of God's own love.”

Before the recitation of the Marian Prayer, the Pope recalled Sunday’s Gospel in which Jesus takes part in a banquet in the house of a leader of the Pharisees, and observes how the guests run to get the top places.

The Pontiff commented that “this is a rather widespread attitude, even today, and not only when we are invited to a meal.”  “We also seek the first place to affirm an alleged superiority over others”, he said.

In reality, Pope Francis explained, “this race to the first places hurts the community, both civil and ecclesial, because it ruins fraternity.”

Pope's September prayer intention: For protecting the oceans

Pope Francis releases a video message accompanying his prayer intention for September, which is that the world's seas and oceans may be protected.

In his prayer intention for the month of September 2019, Pope Francis invites us to pray that "politicians, scientists and economists work together to protect the world’s seas and oceans."

It has become the custom of Pope Francis to release a video message detailing his prayer intention for each month.

The full text of his intention is below:

Oceans contain the bulk of our planet’s water supply, and also most of the immense variety of living creatures, many of them are threatened for various reasons.

Creation is a project of love given by God to humanity.

Our solidarity with the “common home” is born from our faith.

Let us pray this month that politicians, scientists and economists work together to protect the world’s seas and oceans.

Pope Francis condemns euthanasia as utilitarianism, not freedom

Pope Francis speaks to Italian Association of Medical Oncology Sept. 2, 2019. Credit: Vatican Media.
By Hannah Brockhaus

Vatican City, Sep 2, 2019 / 07:13 am (CNA).- Euthanasia is a way of treating the human person as an object; while it may appear to give freedom, it is really a rejection of hope, Pope Francis told an oncology association Sept. 2.

“The practice of euthanasia, which has already been legalized in several countries, only apparently aims to encourage personal freedom,” he said Sept. 2.

“In reality,” he continued, “it is based on a utilitarian view of the person, who becomes useless or can be equated to a cost, if from the medical point of view, he has no hope of improvement or can no longer avoid pain.”

“If one chooses death, the problems are solved in a sense; but how much bitterness behind this reasoning, and what rejection of hope involves the choice of giving up everything and breaking all ties!” he declared.

Pope: A Synod is not a survey. It is the presence of the Holy Spirit
02 September 2019, 17:29

Pope Francis meets with bishops of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church and speaks about the role of the Holy Spirit in synodality.
By Vatican News

Meeting with bishops of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, who are here in Rome for their Synod, Pope Francis referred to an article published this past weekend in “l’Osservatore Romano”. The Pope said he was not trying to “make publicity” for the Vatican newspaper, but that he liked the article which dealt with “the presence of the Holy Spirit in the synodal journey”.

What a Synod is not

Pope Francis said that today we are in danger of believing that “to make a synodal journey, or to have an attitude of synodality,” means taking a survey of opinions and then coming to some sort of agreement. “A synod is not a Parliament”, he said, “you must say things, discuss them as you normally do, but it is not a Parliament”.

Unlike politics, the Pope continued, a synod is not a series of agreements: “I give you this, you give me that”. It is not a question of conducting “sociological investigations” regarding what needs to change, and how to go about changing it.

Update:  First reviews for "The Two Popes"

https://www.patheos.com/blogs/deaconsbench/2019/09/the-first-reviews-are-in-for-the-two-popes/

The first reviews are in for ‘The Two Popes’
September 2, 2019 by Deacon Greg Kandra

The movie premiered at the Telluride Film Festival this weekend. One review calls it, in its headline, “A charming buddy movie about the future of the Catholic Church.”

Make of that what you will.

Without offering a complete review, the Bible of Hollywood, Variety, did report on the premiere and noted the movie was greeted warmly with both laughter and tears:

Little did the audience at the world premiere of “The Two Popes” know that the papal two-hander is actually very funny.

No, it’s not a comedy, but the jokes and ribbing between Pope Benedict XVI (Anthony Hopkins) and the future pope, Cardinal Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce), played well in the packed Chuck Jones’ Cinema, as did hearing Abba’s “Dancing Queen” played over footage of the College of Cardinals making its way into the Vatican for the Papal election.

In other words, director Fernando Meirelles’ film, inspired by Pope Benedict XVI’s decision to resign and subsequent transfer of power to the more progressive Cardinal Bergoglio, is not a straight drama. Although the film did earn the audience’s admiration, and some sniffles toward its end.

“I’m feeling that there’s something out of place in the world,” [Meirelles] said, before praising Pope Francis for “building bridges” during a time when certain leaders (he didn’t name names) are more interested in dividing people with “physical walls, economic walls and technical walls.”

Written by Oscar-nominated “Darkest Hour” screenwriter Anthony McCarten, Meirelles said, “This film is about tolerance and learning to listen to one another.”

Pope heads to “Three M’s” of the Indian Ocean, seeking peace and reconciliation
Inés San Martín  Sep 2, 2019

ROME - A quick internet search for Madagascar, Mozambique and Mauritius would lead travelers to believe they’ve found three gems, with paradise-like beaches that stretch on forever, avenues of sprawling Baobab trees, crystal blue lagoons, rainforests, unique wildlife and incredibly welcoming people.

In fact, that’s all true. Search deeper, however, and you’ll find the other side of the coin - poverty that “surpasses reason,” corruption, jihadism, political and social instability, financial scandal, civil war and harsh weather that scientists believe will become steadily more extreme
.

Arguably, those are the real reasons Pope Francis has decided to visit “the three M’s” of the Indian Ocean Sept. 4-10, stopping in each country’s capital - Maputo, Antananarivo and Port Luis - as well as a special “city” Akamasoa, dubbed “the city of friendship” and home to 18 villages and 30,000 people, located in what used to be a garbage dump in Madagascar’s capital.

Though every one of these countries is unique, all three badly need peace, which is why the official themes for each include the word.

Pope Francis appoints three new Apostolic Nuncios: Monsignor Antoine Camilleri, Paolo Rudelli and Paolo Borgia.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis on Tuesday appointed three new Apostolic Nuncios.

According to the Code of Canon law 364, a nuncio’s chief task is to strengthen bonds between the Holy See and any local church.  A nuncio is often referred to as an “ambassador,” representing the Church in a foreign country or in an international institution such as the United Nations.

Antoine Camilleri

Monsignor Antoine Camilleri has been serving up until now as Undersecretary for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State. He has been appointed as titular archbishop of Skálholt, in Iceland, and at the same time entrusted with the office of Apostolic Nuncio.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Pope Francis has appointed Seattle Coadjutor Archbishop Paul D. Etienne as the archbishop of Seattle and accepted the resignation of Seattle Archbishop J. Peter Sartain.

The appointment and resignation were announced Sept. 3 in Washington by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States.

In April, Francis named Etienne, former archbishop of Anchorage, Alaska, to the role of coadjutor archbishop of the Archdiocese of Seattle. He was officially welcomed by the archdiocese during a Mass of reception June 7 at St. James Cathedral in Seattle.

That liturgy began with Pierre welcoming the new coadjutor and praising Sartain for asking for help, saying that takes “a lot of courage.”

Sartain had asked Francis to appoint a coadjutor because of spinal problems he suffered that required several surgeries.

Pope Francis set off from Rome on Wednesday morning shortly after 8:00 a.m. for his 31st Apostolic Journey abroad, during which he will visit Mozambique, Madagascar, and Mauritius.
By Sr Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp

Pope Francis departed from Rome's Fiumicino Airport on Wednesday morning at approximately 8:05. He is expected to arrive at Maputo International Airport at approximately 6:30 pm local time.

The Alitalia Airbus A-330 has been baptized "Giovanni Battista Tiepolo" for this flight. On hand at Fiumicino Airport to bid farewell to the Pope were various religious and civil leaders.

Smiling, as usual, the Pope took hold of the handrail with his right hand, and ascended the stairs leading up to the plane. He then greeted the captain and two hostesses who welcomed him aboard. Then he turned and waved to everyone present.

Journalists joke with Pope about being stuck in the elevator

Pope Francis on board the flight to Mozambique  (Vatican Media)
Making the rounds greeting the journalists on board the papal flight is always an occasion for Pope Francis to express his esteem and friendship, as well as granting responses which, even if informal, make the news.
Alessandro De Carolis – Papal Flight-Maputo

A mishap worth a laugh. The news that the Pope remained stuck in the elevator this past Sunday has made news around the world. That's how he introduced the Angelus – among the most unusual of introductions on record – with the amusing explanation of his 10 minute delay and even more, the explanation of the other 25 minutes he spent patiently waiting for the mechanics to liberate him. Pope Francis thus presented his apology, appearing at the window over St Peter’s Square at 7 minutes past noon.

A gift and a response

Among the gifts and brief exchanges of words, the Pope also commented in passing on a book published in France by journalist, Nicolas Senèze, who writes for La Croix. Present on the papal flight, the author himself presented his book, entitled How America Wants To Change the Pope, to the Pope who had already read about it beforehand in the newspaper Messaggero. The book offers a critique of a reality, which includes criticisms. Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, reported that the Pope characterized such criticisms as “always an honour, particularly when they come from knowledgeable thinkers, and in this case from an important nation.”

MAPUTO, Mozambique - Greeted with full military honors, traditional dances and huge crowds lining the streets, Pope Francis arrived in Mozambique Sept. 4 at the start of a weeklong trip to Africa.

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi and two children offering flowers welcomed Pope Francis as he stepped off the plane after a flight of just over 10 hours.

The sun had already set as the pope’s plane made its final approach. The official portion of the welcome ceremony was brief, and there were no speeches

But several groups of dancers and drummers began their numbers when the pope was walking to the popemobile, and women in the crowd began ululating, so he paused to watch and wave encouragement.

Some of the dancers were dressed traditionally - grass skirts and leopard-print costumes predominated - but one group wore white T-shirts, white shorts and white tennis shoes.

Young men played the “xigovia,” a traditional woodwind instrument made from a gourd; its sound was similar to that of a kazoo,

Thousands and thousands of people lined the streets from the airport to the apostolic nunciature where the pope was staying. Most stood in the dark unless they were at an intersection, which is where streetlights are more common.

The beaches of Mozambique stretch for nearly 2,500 kilometers along the warm Indian Ocean, making it the 4th longest coastline in the world. Nearly half of the nation’s land mass is covered by forests that offer a unique biodiversity.

Perhaps that is why the Pope began his first official address in Mozambique by describing the country as “blessed by natural beauty and by a great cultural richness”.

Pope Francis holds an Interreligious meeting with young people in Maputo and tells them they are “the joy of this land, the joy of our time”.
By Vatican News

The encounter began with a series of questions: How can we young people turn our dreams into reality? How can we help solve the problems afflicting our country? How can we write a new page in the history of Mozambique?

Hopes and dreams

Pope Francis surprised his young listeners by telling them they had already provided answers to their own questions when they proudly expressed themselves, at the start of the encounter, through their artistic, musical, and cultural performances. “In all of this”, said the Pope, “we see a variety of ways to bring the world together and to look to the horizon: with eyes full of hope, full of the future, full of dreams”.
