Pope to inaugurate Extraordinary Missionary Month October 2019
01 October 2019, 14:51

A missionary sister in the Amazon
Tuesday, October 1st, marks the beginning of the Extraordinary Missionary Month October 2019 inaugurated by Pope Francis in St. Peter's Basilica with the celebration of Evening Vespers Prayers.
By Linda Bordoni

The Extraordinary Missionary Month was called for by Pope Francis two years ago on World Mission Sunday.

“For the month of October 2019”, he said “I ask the whole Church to live an extraordinary time of missionary activity”.

He also explained it marks the 100th anniversary of Pope Benedict XV's Apostolic Letter Maximum Illud, a document on the Church’s mission to bring to the world the salvation of Jesus Christ, which he described as prophetic and far-sighted.

The theme chosen for the month is “Baptized and Sent: The Church of Christ on Mission in the World.” It will help us in our mission, he explained, which he said is not about spreading a “religious ideology” or a “lofty ethical teaching.” Instead, he continued, “through the mission of the Church, Jesus Christ himself continues to evangelize and act; her mission thus makes present in history the Kairos, the favorable time of salvation.”

This special month opens on the feast of Saint Therese of Lisieux, patroness of the Missions together with Saint Francis Xavier, and has its culmination in the celebration of World Mission Sunday marked this year on 20 October.

Vespers

At 6 pm Rome time, Pope Francis will preside over solemn vespers in St. Peter’s Basilica after having listened to testimonies and prayers prepared by eight Italian missionary institutes: Comboni and Saverian Missionaries, Missionaries of the Consolata, PIME and Missionaries of the Immaculate.

At the end, Pope Francis will give the missionaries who are preparing to go forth, a crucifix.

Pope at Vespers: The Lord is calling you to bear witness
01 October 2019, 16:34

Pope Francis presides over the celebration of Vespers in Saint Peter’s Basilica to open the Extraordinary Missionary Month of October. In his homily, he urges us to be witnesses in a missionary Church that is always “on the go”.
By Vatican News

1 October is the feast day of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus, affectionately known as “The Little Flower”. Although she never left her Carmelite cloister, she is the universal patron of missions, along with Saint Francis Xavier.

Three missionary models

Pope Francis recalled both of them in his homily. Saint Therese, he said, “made prayer the fuel for missionary activity in the world”. Saint Francis Xavier, said the Pope, is perhaps “the greatest missionary of all time, after Saint Paul”.

Together with the Venerable Pauline Jaricot, a French laywoman who helped create the foundations of the Pontifical Missionary Societies, they “give us a jolt”, said the Pope. They challenge us to “emerge from our shell and to renounce our comforts for the sake of the Gospel”.

Using our talents

Pope Francis began by reflecting on Saint Matthew’s Gospel that recounts the parable of the talents. “God has entrusted us with his greatest treasures: our own lives and the lives of others”, he said. God calls us “to make our talents bear fruit, with boldness and creativity”.

This extraordinary Missionary Month, said the Pope, “should jolt us and motivate us to be active in doing good. Not to be notaries of faith and guardians of grace, but missionaries”.

Pope at General Audience: Holy Spirit is the protagonist of evangelization
02 October 2019, 13:53

Pope Francis at his weekly general audience at the Vatican on 2 October, 2019.
Continuing his catechesis on the Acts of the Apostles at Wednesday’s General Audience this week, Pope Francis explains on how the Holy Spirit leads the deacon Philip to help the senior official of the Queen of Ethiopia to embrace Christ.
By Robin Gomes

Pope Francis began his catechesis, explaining how after the persecution of Christians following the martyrdom of Stephen, the spread of the Gospel appeared to suffer a setback.  As a result, many Christians dispersed elsewhere.

But persecution that appears to be the hallmark of Christ’s disciples, the Pope explained, “instead of extinguishing the fire of evangelization, feeds it even more”.

The deacon Philip, who was proclaiming the Gospel along with healing and casting out evil spirits in Samaria,  is impelled by the Holy Spirit to meet a stranger with a heart open to God.  With enthusiasm, he set off on a deserted and dangerous road to meet a senior official of the Queen of Ethiopia, the administrator of her treasures.  The Jewish proselyte, a eunuch, was travelling home after worshipping in Jerusalem.   In his carriage, he was reading a passage from the Prophet Isaiah on the "servant of the Lord", but understood nothing.

Pope Francis appoints Maltese bishop pro-secretary general of Synod of Bishops
By Hannah Brockhaus

Vatican City, Oct 2, 2019 / 04:40 am (CNA).- The Vatican announced Wednesday that Pope Francis has nominated Maltese Bishop Mario Grech pro-secretary general of the Synod of Bishops to work alongside secretary general Cardinal Lorenzo Baldisseri.

In a declaration to journalists Oct. 2, Balidisseri, secretary general of the Synod of Bishops since 2013, said the pro-secretary general will "walk alongside" him in his role and participate in this month's Amazon synod as a member.

Baldisseri said Grech will then assume the full position of secretary general at the time his own mandate "expires," though there was no indication of when that will be.

Holy See and U.S. co-host Vatican Symposium
02 October 2019, 16:48

Vatican Symposium “Pathways to Achieving Human Dignity: Partnering with Faith-Based Organizations”  (ANSA)
“Pathways to Achieving Human Dignity: Partnering with Faith-Based Organizations”, is both the title and theme of the one-day Symposium, jointly sponsored by the Holy See’s Secretariat of State and the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See.
By Vatican News

It was Pope Saint John Paul II and US President Ronald Reagan who established formal diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the United States in 1984.

35 years of diplomatic relations

The Vatican Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Gallagher, recalled that 35th anniversary in his opening remarks at the Symposium. He quoted Pope Francis who, during his 2015 visit to the United States, said: “The aim of our collaboration is to build a society which is truly tolerant and inclusive”.

Defending human dignity

United States Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo, was also present at the Vatican Symposium. When it comes to defending human dignity, “the stakes today are arguably higher than they were even during the Cold War”, he said, “because the threats to it are more diverse and more numerous”.

The roots of religious repression, he added, lie with authoritarian regimes that “will never accept a power higher than their own”, causing “assaults on human dignity”. Which is why “we must exercise our moral voice to confront them”, he added. The most fundamental issues of human dignity and religious freedom, said the U.S. Secretary of State, “transcend everyday politics”.

German bishops press ahead with plans for reform consultation

OXFORD, England - Germany’s Catholic bishops are pressing ahead with a national reform consultation, or “synodal way,” despite cautions from the Vatican and criticism from some bishops.

“At their spring assembly, the German bishops decided by common consent to follow the synodal way, and they’ve continued working toward this at their latest plenary in Fulda,” said Matthias Kopp, spokesman for the Bonn-based bishops’ conference.

“The synodal way is a ‘sui generis’ process, and not a synod or a particular council, and there’ll be no separate German process, without Rome, on questions touching the universal church. But we hope to offer ideas and contributions to the universal church,” he said.

Kopp spoke as documents were published from the bishops’ Sept. 23-26 autumn plenary, clarifying plans for the two-year consultation, organized by the bishops’ conference and lay-led Central Committee of German Catholics.

“The bishops’ conference has verified the issues - authority, participation, the separation of powers, sexual morality, the priestly life, women in church services and orders - and wish to face these issues. A vast number of believers are waiting for this, and the bishops see it as their pastoral mission.”

The synodal way is to include four working groups of bishops, theologians and lay experts, with Jesuit Father Bernd Hagenkord, a former Vatican Radio director, and Maria Boxberg of Germany’s Christian Social Studies organization, named Sept. 27 as “spiritual accompaniers.”

Pope at Santa Marta: Receiving the Word of God fills us with joy
03 October 2019, 13:45

The encounter with the Word of God fills us with joy, and this is our strength. At the Mass at Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis emphasized that we cannot understand the feast of Sunday without the Word of God.
Vatican News

In his homily at daily Mass, Pope Francis said that opening our hearts to the encounter with the Word of God fills us with joy. The Holy Father invited the faithful to listen attentively to the readings, without letting them “go in one ear and out the other.”

The Pope began by reflecting on the day’s first Reading, taken from the book of the prophet Nehemiah. It is “the story of the encounter of the people of God with the Word of God. It’s all a story of rebuilding,” he said.

The reading is centred on the reconstruction of the Temple and the return of the Jewish people from exile. The leaders of the people – the governor, Nehemiah; and Ezra, the scribe – “enthroned” the Word of God. They had gathered the people in the square in front of the Water Gate, and Ezra read from the scroll of the Law; afterwards, the priests explained the reading to the people. Pope Francis asked his listeners to consider how “for decades this had not happened. It is the encounter of the people with their God, the encounter of the people with the Word of God.”

Pope to Ursulines: “Make new life” by attracting people to Christ
03 October 2019, 14:00

2019.10.03 Capitolo Generale Unione Romana Ordine di Sant'Orsola  (Vatican Media)
Meeting some 90 members of the General Chapter of the Ursuline Sisters on October 3, Pope Francis urged them to “make new life” by opening the doors to Christ and bringing a breath of new life to the ends of the earth.
By Robin Gomes

Today, no one can say any more: "This does not concern me". The problems of others are our problems, my problems. They no longer concern only a people or a nation, but the whole world. Pope Francis made the point to the Ursuline Sisters, officially known as the Roman Union of the Order of Saint Ursula.

Our problems, my problems

Commenting on the theme of their General Chapter – “A Global Community moving into new life” – the Pope said, “We find ourselves in a time increasingly interconnected and inhabited by peoples who have come to be part of a "global community". “Today,” he said, “no one can say any more: "This does not concern me".

Pope names anti-Mafia prosecutor to court as scandal swirls
Nicole Winfield   Oct 3, 2019
ASSOCIATED PRESS

ROME - Pope Francis named one of Italy’s leading anti-Mafia prosecutors as president of the Vatican’s criminal tribunal Thursday, just days after a new scandal erupted over alleged financial wrongdoing in the heart of the Holy See.

The appointment of Giuseppe Pignatone came two days after Vatican police raided the Apostolic Palace and seized documents and computers from the secretariat of state. Also searched were the offices of the Vatican’s financial watchdog agency, which is tasked with flagging possible money laundering and other suspicious financial transactions.

The Vatican press office declined to comment further on the raids, saying only that they were based on a report from the Vatican bank and auditor general’s office about past financial operations.

Pompeo meets pope to discuss religious freedom, Middle East Christians
By Matt Hadro

Vatican City, Oct 3, 2019 / 09:00 am (CNA).- Pope Francis met with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to discuss the preservation of Christian communities in the Middle East and the promotion of religious freedom on Thursday.

According to State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus, during the Oct. 3 meeting in Vatican City, the two “reaffirmed” the commitment of the U.S and the Holy See “to advancing religious freedom around the world, and in particular, protecting Christian communities in the Middle East.”

Pompeo’s audience with the pope is part of an international trip to Italy, Vatican City, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Greece.

Synod document is to aid discussion, not be church teaching, cardinal says

ATICAN CITY (CNS) — Brazilian Cardinal Claudio Hummes said the working document for the Synod of Bishops for the Amazon is not official church teaching, but rather a way for bishops to listen to the local church’s concerns.

The working document, which was drafted after input was received from bishops’ conferences and local communities, “isn’t a document of the synod, it is for the synod,” Cardinal Hummes, relator general of the synod, told journalists Oct. 3.

“It is the voice of the local church, the voice of the church in the Amazon: of the church, of the people, of the history and of the very earth, the voice of the earth,” he said.

During a briefing at the Vatican press office, Cardinal Hummes and Cardinal Lorenzo Baldisseri, secretary-general of the Synod of Bishops, responded to a journalist’s question regarding criticisms against the synod and its working document, also known as the “Instrumentum Laboris.”

Pope consecrates Synod for the Amazon to Saint Francis of Assisi

During a highly symbolic tree-planting ceremony in the Vatican Gardens on Friday, Pope Francis places the upcoming Synod for the Amazon under the protection of Saint Francis of Assisi.
By Vatican News

The phrase “Everything is connected” recurs often in Pope Francis’ Encyclical, Laudato Sì.

During a unique ceremony in the Vatican Gardens on Friday, signs, symbols and songs, ensured that everything really was “connected”.

Saint Francis and ecology

Starting with the timing: 4 October is the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, which closes the “Season of Creation” that began on 1 September. This year also marks 40 years since Pope Saint John Paul II proclaimed St Francis Patron Saint “of those who promote ecology”. And, in just two days, the Synod for the Amazon will open, the first Synod ever to address the issue of integral ecology.

Organizers and participants

Then there were the participants: the Pan-Amazonian Ecclesial Network, the Order of Franciscan Friars Minor, and the Global Catholic Climate Movement organized the event, while various religious congregations and representatives of the indigenous people of the Amazon Region played important roles in providing colour and creativity.

After witnessing the ritual, Pope Francis set aside his prepared remarks, opting instead to offer the Our Father without comment.

Instead of the brief prepared remarks he was scheduled to deliver after the tree was planted, however, he simply prayed the Our Father and left in a car. The ceremony ended abruptly without the planned closing prayer and song.

The Homily delivered by the Pope in the course of the Eucharistic Celebration was, in essence, the Homily provided in the Ritual for the Ordination of Bishops, to which, however, he added some considerations.
