Pope at Audience: true believers intercede for the world
17 June 2020, 10:19

Pope Francis continues his cycle of catechesis on prayer at the Wednesday General Audience, focusing on the biblical figure of Moses.
By Vatican News

Pope Francis began his General Audience on Wednesday by noting that “God never liked to have anything to do with those who prayed the 'easy' way”. He used Moses as an example, explaining that from the very first day of his vocation he was not a “weak” dialogue partner.

The Pope noted that when God called him, “Moses was in human terms a ‘failure’”. He explained that the Book of Exodus depicts Moses as a fugitive in the desert of Midian.

Once a man who fought for the weak and oppressed, “it was not justice” but “violence that came from his hands”, said the Pope.

In a video message sent Wednesday to the Apostleship of the Sea, Pope Francis recognized the difficulties facing seafarers as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He expressed gratitude for their help in feeding humanity despite the risks involved.

“Your work as maritime personnel and fishermen has thus become even more important,” he said, “since it is providing our greater human family with food and other primary needs.”

Benedict XVI visits his sick brother in Germany
18 June 2020, 15:13

Pope emeritus Benedict XVI, traveled to Regensburg today to be alongside his brother Georg, accompanied by Archbishop Gänswein, the vice commander of the Vatican Gendarmerie, and a small group of health care professionals and collaborators.

UPDATED
By Alessandro de Carolis

Pope emeritus Benedict left the quiet of the Mater Ecclesiae monastery in the Vatican for a visit to Germany to be close to his brother, Georg. He is 96 and in poor health. The emeritus pontiff traveled Thursday morning accompanied by his personal secretary Archbishop Georg Gänswein; his doctor and his nurse; a collaborator from the Memores Domini community; and the vice commander of the Vatican Gendarmerie.

A statement from the Diocese of Regensburg indicated that Benedict arrived in Munich at 11:45. He was greeted by Bishop Rudolf Voderholzer, who accompanied him to Regensberg, where he will reside at the diocesan seminary. The statement from the diocese asked the faithful to respect the wishes of the two brothers, who requested that the "deeply personal meeting remain private." Hence no public appearances are anticipated.

According to Matteo Bruni, the Director of the Holy See Press Office, Benedict will remain in Germany for “as long as necessary."

Vatican document on integral ecology: Safeguarding Creation is everyone’s responsibility
18 June 2020, 11:30

Several Vatican Dicasteries team up to release a document entitled “Journeying for the care of the common home”, which offers a guide to all Christians on how to maintain a healthy relationship with Creation.
By Isabella Piro

The Vatican released a document on Thursday that offers a guide to Catholics, and all Christians, regarding our relationship with God’s Creation.

Entitled “Journeying for the care of the common home”, the document coincides with the fifth anniversary of Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato sí, which was signed on 24 May 2015 and published on 18 June of that same year.

The document was drafted by the “Holy See Interdicastery Table on Integral Ecology”, created in 2015 to evaluate ways to best promote and implement integral ecology.

Institutions linked to the Holy See, along with several Bishops’ Conferences, and Catholic organizations, make up the committee.

The text was written prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, but it highlights the main message of Laudato sí: Everything is connected; each particular crisis forms part of a single, complex socio-environmental crisis that requires a true ecological conversion.

Cardinal Sarah remains head of Vatican liturgy department after 75th birthday

Vatican City, Jun 19, 2020 / 07:00 am MT (CNA).- Cardinal Robert Sarah said Wednesday that he would continue to serve as prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship beyond his 75th birthday.

Bishops are required to submit their resignation to the pope when they turn 75. The Guinean cardinal celebrated his 75th birthday Monday, June 15.

In a June 17 post on his official Twitter account, Sarah wrote: “Thank you for the messages that have reached me from around the world on the occasion of my birthday. Let us continue the path with Christ. For my part, I am happy to continue my work within the Congregation for Divine Worship. Always pray for the pope.”

ACI Stampa, CNA’s Italian language partner agency, reported June 18 that Pope Francis had asked Sarah to remain as prefect of the liturgy department donec aliter provideatur, or “until further provision is made.”

Pope Francis appointed Sarah, the most senior African prelate at the Vatican, prefect of the liturgy department in November 2014. He had previously served as the president of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum and as secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.

Pope adds three new invocations to the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary
20 June 2020, 16:24

“Mater misericordiae”, the Latin for “Mother of mercy”; "Mater spei", or “Mother of hope”; and “Solacium migrantium", or “Solace of migrants” are the new invocations to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Litany of Loreto, which is often recited at the end of the Rosary.
By Vatican News

The addition that Pope Francis has made to the Litany of Loreto, was made public by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, on Saturday.  It was timed for the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, June 20.

In a letter to the presidents of bishops’ conferences worldwide, Cardinal Robert Sarah, the Prefect of the Congregation, and its Secretary, Archbishop Arthur Roche, note that through the course of centuries, Christians have been using innumerable invocations and titles to call upon the Virgin Mary, “as the privileged and sure way to an encounter with Christ”.

Pope thanks Italian doctors and health care workers for heroic service during pandemic
20 June 2020, 12:30

Pope Francis receives in audience religious and civil authorities together with a delegation of doctors, nurses, health care and civil protection workers from the northern Lombardy region, the epicentre of the Covid-19 pandemic in Italy.
By Vatican News

The highly industrialized and productive region of Lombardy in northern Italy is the hardest hit in terms of infections and fatalities due to Covid-19. The country’s first local case emerged on 21 February in the town of Codogno in Lombardy. Codogno and nine other towns in Lombardy and Veneto were closed off, and eventually the entire country locked down in early March. Since the epidemic started, more than 34,000 people have died of Covid-19 in Italy, one of the world’s worst death tolls.

On the front lines of the epidemic was an army of doctors, nurses, health care and civil protection workers. They risked – and many gave - their lives, working against the odds to tackle the emergency and care for the sick, who were put in isolation to curb the spread of the disease. Those who died were comforted by those caring for them, by priests and consecrated persons, as families and loved ones were in lockdown and unable to be present at the end of their lives.

These are the people Pope Francis has chosen to thank for their heroic work in one of the first audiences he has held in the Vatican since Italy and the Vatican were locked down early in March.

Pope at Angelus: Have no fear, for the Father cares for us
21 June 2020, 12:08

Pope Francis invites Christian disciples to “have no fear” in the face of hostility, persecution, and even the feeling of being abandoned by God.
By Christopher Wells

In his reflection on Sunday’s Gospel, Pope Francis said that Jesus’s invitation to the disciples, to have no fear, resonates: Jesus, he said, “persistently exhorts them to ‘have no fear,’ and describes three tangible situations” they would face.

Hostility

The first is the hostility “of those who would stifle the Word of God, by sugar-coating it or by silencing those who proclaim it.” Jesus encourages the disciples to spread the Word “openly” and “publicly.”

Benedict XVI returns to Rome after visiting ill brother in Germany
By Courtney Mares

Vatican City, Jun 22, 2020 / 06:00 am MT (CNA).- Pope emeritus Benedict XVI arrived back in Rome Monday after a four-day trip to Germany to visit his ailing brother.

The Diocese of Regensburg reported June 22 that 93-year-old Benedict XVI said goodbye to his 96-year-old brother, Msgr. Georg Ratzinger, who is in poor health, before departing for Munich airport.

“It is perhaps the last time that the two brothers, Georg and Joseph Ratzinger, will see each other in this world,” the Regensburg diocese said in an earlier statement.

Benedict XVI was accompanied on the journey to the airport by Bishop Rudolf Voderholzer of Regensburg. Before the pope emeritus boarded an Italian air force plane he was greeted by Bavaria’s premier Markus Söder. The Süddeutsche Zeitung, a German daily newspaper, quoted Söder as saying that the encounter was a moment of “joy and melancholy.”

The pope emeritus landed in Rome at 1 p.m. local time, according to Vatican News. Benedict XVI and his entourage arrived 45 minutes later at the Mater Ecclesiae monastery, his residence in the Vatican.

Speaking a press conference in Regensburg June 22, Bishop Rudolf Voderholzer praised the bond between the two brothers.

Announcing the Pope's donation, the country's Catholic Bishops’ Conference revealed that Ecuador’s Ambassador to the Holy See, José Luis Álvarez Palacio, has informed the Apostolic Nunciature that the devices have already left the Vatican and will be delivered in the coming days.

Pope Francis denounces ‘hypocrisy’ of politicians on BBC’s post-COVID radio series
Charles Collins  Jun 22, 2020

LEICESTER, United Kingdom – In a reflection offered to BBC Rethink, a series asking how society can change for the better after the COVID-19 crisis, Pope Francis has warned the poor have “become part of the landscape.”

The program aired on the British national broadcaster on Monday morning – with the pope speaking in Spanish with a voiceover provided by the BBC – and was provided by the Vatican for the series, but taken from an interview Francis gave to his biographer Austen Ivereigh in April.

“This coronavirus crisis is affecting us all, rich and poor alike, and putting a spotlight on hypocrisy. I am worried by the hypocrisy of certain political personalities who speak of facing up to the crisis, of the problem of hunger in the world, but who in the meantime manufacture weapons,” the pontiff said. “This is a time to be converted from this kind of functional hypocrisy. It’s a time for integrity. Either we are coherent with our beliefs or we lose everything.”

BBC Rethink is scheduled to present the reflections of over 30 different thinkers, including former U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Samantha Power and billionaire George Soros.

World Youth Day Magazine available free online
19 June 2020, 13:32

The Vatican has announced that the World Youth Day Magazine, highlighting the memories of World Youth Day (WYD) in Panama City in January 2019, is now available free online.
By Robin Gomes

For the past thirty years, the Vatican’s World Youth Day Magazine has been an official souvenir of the fruitful dialogue between the Holy Father and young people at the international events.

The last World Youth Day (WYD) took place in Panama City, January 22 to 27, 2019.  The latest edition of the World Youth Day Magazine is available as of June 19 on the website of the Dicastery for the Laity, Family, and Life, the Vatican dicastery that oversees the organization of the youth event.

Published by the John Paul II Youth Foundation as a single issue containing multiple languages (English, Spanish, French, and Italian), the World Youth Day Magazine is issued after every international World Youth Day.

The Portuguese capital, Lisbon, has been chosen as the venue of the next WYD scheduled for August 2022.  However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, on April 20, the Vatican postponed it by a year to August 2023.

Pope at Audience: We are never alone if we bring our lives to God in prayer
24 June 2020, 09:48

At the weekly General Audience, Pope Francis reflects on how King David prayed while shepherding God’s people with his poet’s soul.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis focused his catechesis at the Wednesday General Audience on the Biblical figure of King David.

“Favored by God even from his youth, he is chosen for a unique mission that would play a central role in the history of the people of God and in our own faith.”

Jesus, said the Pope, is called “son of David” and fulfilled the ancient promises of “a King completely after God’s heart, in perfect obedience to the Father.”
