New Directory for Catechesis released
25 June 2020, 11:30

The Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization releases a new Directory for Catechesis, providing guidelines for the Church’s mission of proclaiming the Gospel through catechesis and evangelization.
By Vatican News

The long-awaited updated Directory for Catechesis was released in the Vatican on Thursday. It was drafted under the direction of the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization. It was approved by Pope Francis on 23 March - the liturgical memorial of Saint Turibius of Mongrovejo, a 16th century saint who gave a strong impetus to evangelization and catechesis. This latest edition comes as a follow-up to the “General Catechetical Directory” of 1971, and the “General Directory for Catechesis” of 1997 both of which were issued by the Congregation for Clergy.

The new Directory seeks to highlight the close link between evangelization and catechesis. It underlines that every baptized person is a missionary called to find new ways of communicating the faith with commitment and responsibility. In this regard, the new Directory proposes three major principles of action: Witnessing, Mercy and Dialogue. The new Directory containing over 300 pages, and is made up of 3 parts divided into 12 chapters.

Dignitatis humanae: the Council affirms the right to religious liberty
23 June 2020, 17:24

In the past, there was discussion about the interpretation of the conciliar texts. Now, the Vatican documents themselves are sometimes being called into question. Let’s look back at a document that has left its mark on the history of the Church.
By Andrea Tornielli

“This Vatican Council declares that the human person has a right to religious freedom.”

Fifty-five years ago, on 7 December 1965, the Bishops assembled in Saint Peter’s Basilica approved one of the most-discussed conciliar documents, the Declaration Dignitatis humanae, On Religious Freedom.

"This freedom means that all men are to be immune from coercion on the part of individuals or of social groups and of any human power, in such wise that no one is to be forced to act in a manner contrary to his own beliefs, whether privately or publicly, whether alone or in association with others, within due limits. The council further declares that the right to religious freedom has its foundation in the very dignity of the human person as this dignity is known through the revealed word of God and by reason itself. This right of the human person to religious freedom is to be recognized in the constitutional law whereby society is governed and thus it is to become a civil right” (DH, 2).

A challenge to the globalized world

In an Address to the participants at the International Conference on "Religious Freedom and the Global Clash of Values,” Pope Francis stated:

“Reason recognizes in religious freedom a fundamental human right which reflects the highest human dignity, the ability to seek the truth and conform to it, and recognizes in it a condition which is indispensable to the ability to deploy all of one’s own potentiality. Religious freedom is not only that of private thought or worship. It is the liberty to live, both privately and publicly, according to the ethical principles resulting from found truth. This is a great challenge in the globalized world, where weak thought — which is like a disease — also lowers the general ethical level, and in the name of a false concept of tolerance, it ends in persecuting those who defend the truth about man and its ethical consequences.”

Pope Francis appoints apostolic administrator for troubled Polish diocese

CNA Staff, Jun 25, 2020 / 07:00 am MT (CNA).- Pope Francis appointed Thursday an apostolic administrator to take charge of a Polish diocese whose bishop is under investigation over his handling of an abuse case.

The Vatican announced June 25 that the pope had named Archbishop Grzegorz Ryś of Łódź as the apostolic administrator “sede plena” of the Diocese of Kalisz in central Poland.

“Sede plena” is a term used to signify that a see is still occupied by a bishop.

The decision is the latest blow for the Bishop of Kalisz, Edward Janiak.

In May, he was the subject of a documentary film, Hide and Seek, by Marek and Tomasz Sekielski. The filmmakers brothers provoked a nationwide discussion last year when they released a documentary, Tell No One, addressing clerical abuse in Poland. The film has been viewed almost 24 million times on YouTube.

Their new film accused Janiak of failing to take action against a priest accused of abuse.

Pope at Angelus: Gratitude is a sign of the kingdom of God
28 June 2020, 12:11

Ahead of the Angelus prayer on Sunday, Pope Francis urges Christians to carry our cross in Jesus’ footsteps with generosity and grateful hearts.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis prayed the traditional Marian prayer of the Angelus on Sunday, and reflected on Jesus’ invitation for Christians to follow Him in the midst of sacrifice and trials.

In the day’s Gospel (Mt 10, 37-42), Jesus clearly lays out the demands involved in being His disciple.

Pope Francis ‘appreciates’ the ‘Synodal Way,’ says German bishop after private audience

Vatican City, Jun 27, 2020 / 11:30 am MT (CNA).- Pope Francis “appreciates” the German Church’s “Synodal Way,” the president of the German bishops’ conference said after meeting with the pope Saturday.

In a statement following his private audience with the pope June 27, Bishop Georg Bätzing said: “I feel strengthened by the intensive exchange with the Holy Father to continue on the path we have taken. The pope appreciates this project, which he associates closely with the concept of ‘synodality’ which he coined.”

He continued: “It was a matter of concern to me to make it clear that the Church in Germany is following this path and always knows that she is bound to the universal Church.”

Bätzing traveled to the Vatican the day after the German Church released figures showing that it lost a record number of members in 2019.

The statistics, issued June 26, showed that 272,771 people exited the Catholic Church last year, a significant increase on the 2018 figure of 216,078.

Pope at Mass: Let us be challenged by Jesus, like Peter and Paul
29 June 2020, 10:21

On the Solemnity of Sts Peter and Paul, Pope Francis invites us to be builders of unity and prophets of God’s heaven on earth. In keeping with health precautions, the Holy Father celebrated Mass at the “Altar of the Chair” in St Peter’s Basilica, with the participation of a limited number of the faithful.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis offered Mass for the Solemnity of Sts Peter and Paul in the Vatican Basilica, built over the tomb of St Peter. In accordance with a long-standing tradition, the Holy Father also blessed the pallia, an ecclesiastical garment presented to metropolitan archbishops as a symbol of unity with the Holy See.

In his homily, the Pope reflected on the themes of “unity” and “prophecy.”

Pope at Angelus: Recognizing Jesus as the living God is secret to happy life
29 June 2020, 12:11

At the Angelus prayer on the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Pope Francis invites Christians to make their lives a gift and to recognize Jesus as the living God.

By Fr. Benedict Mayaki, SJ

During his Angelus on the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Pope Francis reflected on the life of Saint Peter, contrasting his deliverance from prison by an angel in Monday’s First Reading (Acts 12: 1 – 11), with his later imprisonment in Rome and martyrdom.

Pope Francis asked: “How come he (Saint Peter) was first spared the trial, and then not?”

Pope Francis to Catholic Media: Be signs of unity amid diversity
30 June 2020, 14:58

Pope Francis sends a message to this year's Catholic Media Conference, which is sponsored by the Catholic Press Association and has as its theme “Together While Apart”. In the message, the Pope stresses the need for men and women of conviction “who protect communication from all that would distort it or bend it to other purposes.”

By Vatican News

The Catholic Press Association (CPA) was founded over one hundred years ago in the United States with the aim of “serving and uniting” it’s members. It has nearly 225 publication members and 600 individual members in the association.

But this year, for the first time in its long history, the association will be holding a virtual Catholic Media Conference, due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

With the pandemic in mind, Pope Francis began his message to the conference by expressing his closeness “to those who have been affected by the virus and to those who, even at the risk of their lives, have worked and continue to work in assisting our brothers and sisters in need.”

Abuse in Poland: Pope informed, ‘the guilty will be punished’
30 June 2020, 11:06

The Director of the Holy See Press Office responds to journalists after a Polish group of faithful publishes an appeal in the Italian newspaper “La Repubblica.” “The Church must do everything possible so that cases of abuse are brought to light”.
By Vatican News

“The Holy Father is informed of the appeal. He is praying for those who sent it. The entire Church must do everything possible so that the canonical norms are applied, cases of abuse are brought to light and those guilty of these serious crimes are punished.”

With these words, the Director of the Holy See Press Office Matteo Bruni replied to journalists who asked him to comment on the appeal published by 635 Polish faithful at their own expense in the Italian daily La Repubblica on Monday morning, 29 June.

“Holy Father Francis! Repair our Church!” is the title of the appeal. “We beg you!” the petitioners wrote to the Pope. “Look with kindness on the Church in Poland where cases of paedophilia have occurred. Loyalty to the institution is blind and deaf - more important than the good of the victims.”

CELAM announces new Ecclesial Conference of the Amazon Region
30 June 2020, 13:31

The Presidents of the Bishops’ Conference of Latin America (CELAM) and of the Pan-Amazonian Ecclesial Network (REPAM) announce the creation of the Ecclesial Conference of the Amazon Region, aimed at promoting synodality in the Amazon.
By Vatican News

The news of the creation of the Ecclesial Conference for the Amazon Region comes in a statement released on 29 June – the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul – and signed by Archbishop Miguel Cabrejos Vidarte, President of CELAM, and by Cardinal Cláudio Hummes, President of REPAM.

Hope for kairos

The statement explains that the decision to form the Ecclesial Conference was made during an Assembly which took place virtually from 26-29 June 2020.

"This Assembly… is part of this hopeful kairos that carries forward the synodal journey to open new paths for the Church and for an integral ecology in the Amazon region”, write the bishops.

In the statement, the bishops underline Pope Francis’s closeness to the whole process of the creation of this new ecclesial entity: "This feast of our Church is also a gesture of thanksgiving for the service of the Holy Father, so we consider the birth of this Ecclesial Conference as a gesture of hope together with the Magisterium of Pope Francis, who has closely accompanied this whole process”.

By Vatican News

Georg Ratzinger, the older brother of the Pope emeritus, died Wednesday morning, aged 96. He had been hospitalized in Regensburg, the city where he lived the greater part of his long life. With his death, Joseph Ratzinger – who had desired to make the journey by plane to see his dying brother one last time – remains the only member of the family still alive. The two brothers – one a musician and kappellmeister of a famous choir, the other first a theologian and then a bishop, cardinal, and finally pope - were ordained together on the same day, and were always closely united.

German Ambassador to the Holy See on Germany’s upcoming EU presidency
01 July 2020, 11:45

Ambassador Michael Koch, German Ambassador to the Holy See discusses the upcoming German EU presidency and the challenges the EU will have to tackle in the following months.
By Vatican News

Germany assumes today the presidency of the Council of the European Union, a mandate which lasts six months. This means that from July to December 2020, Germany will chair the meetings of the EU Council and will be responsible for advancing EU legislation.

Speaking to Vatican Radio’s Gudrun Sailer, German Ambassador to the Holy See, Michael Koch notes that given the current crisis in which we find ourselves “this will be a corona presidency”.

EU and the Holy See

With regards to the role of the Holy See, Ambassador Koch says that "we cannot, and do not, expect their role to be one of telling us how to draft a EU budget". However, “what is important and what the Holy See and the Pope have contributed repeatedly” are very clear indications of the basis from which this sort of exercise ought to be launched.

For example, continues Ambassador Koch, “the necessity for Europeans to stay together and to be ready to support each other”, stressed by the Pope, is “exactly what our idea is as well”. Likewise “with regards to refugees: not to forget that there is also a global south which has far fewer means to deal with a crisis like this and which needs our support as well”. Just as the Holy See does, Ambassador Koch stresses that "we also agree completely" on the importance of underlining the fact that “while in the first phase of the crisis the number of people fleeing across the Mediterranean had decreased, it is at this point in time increasing”. The problem has not gone away, stresses Ambassador Koch, and as the Holy Father has repeatedly stressed, “as Europeans, we have to find better ways to deal with it”.

Finally, Ambassador Koch stresses that more multilateralism is needed to face this crisis, and that some of the institution’s multilateral structures could have worked better. “Well” concludes Ambassador Koch, “inspired by what the Holy father says: let’s make them better”.
