Covid-19: Pontifical Academy for Life calls for solidarity to protect most vulnerable
22 July 2020, 12:00

The Pontifical Academy for Life releases a document on the lessons the human family can learn from the Covid-19 pandemic, and urges everyone to develop an ethics of risk and solidarity to protect the most vulnerable of society.
By Devin Watkins

“Humana communitas in the age of pandemic: Untimely meditations on life’s rebirth” is the title of the document released on Wednesday by the Pontifical Academy for Life.

The document opens with a statement of fact: “Covid-19 has brought desolation to the world.” Despite the situation we find ourselves in, we are “summoned to the courage of resistance.”

The human community is therefore invited to take a step back and give thanks for the gift of life we have been given, in order to turn our predicament into “a passageway to life’s rebirth”.

Hagia Sophia: Greek president appeals to Pope Francis to put pressure on Turkey

Rome Newsroom, Jul 21, 2020 / 08:10 am MT (CNA).- The president of Greece called Pope Francis Monday urging the pope to advocate for the preservation of the status quo regarding Hagia Sophia, which is due to be reverted to a mosque this week.

In a phone call July 20, Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou told the pope that Turkey’s decision “deeply hurts those who consider this top symbol of Christianity to belong to humanity and the world’s cultural heritage,” according to a statement from the president’s office.

She said that the move should be “explicitly and unequivocally condemned” by the international community, and asked Pope Francis to help garner international support so that the Turkish leadership revokes its decision and restores Hagia Sophia to the status of a protected monument.

According to the Greek government communiqué, Pope Francis acknowledged the political motives of Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s decision, which Sakellaropoulou described as diverting Turkey from the values of the secular state and the principles of tolerance and pluralism.

The pope also expressed his gratitude to Greece for its efforts in receiving refugees and migrants, and said he hoped that conditions would allow him to act on the president’s invitation to visit the country in 2021.

The Greek president’s call came after reports that President Erdoğan had invited Pope Francis to be a guest at the July 24 ceremony reopening Hagia Sophia as the Ayasofya Mosque.

21 JULY 2020, THE TABLET
Turkish Bishop deplores western inaction over Hagia Sophia
by Jonathan Luxmoore

The Bishop told Italy's Il Tempo weekly other churches had been turned into mosques in Istanbul and Trabzon.

A Catholic bishop in Turkey has accused European governments of abandoning Christians and facilitating the conversion of Istanbul's historic Hagia Sophia basilica into a Muslim mosque, as another senior church representative also criticised the European Union's response to the Turkish government's controversial move.

"The West makes big statements, but doesn't ensure mutual rights - I fear it will also quickly forget about Hagia Sophia", said Bishop Paolo Bizetti, Italian apostolic vicar of Anatolia. "For Christians in Turkey, this development came as no surprise, since it was consistent with a long-declared political and religious vision. Most Westerners seem completely unaware of realities here".

Speaking on Friday, President Erdogan defended Hagia Sophia's conversion as a "matter of sovereignty" and "natural right of the nation", adding that women would be included among up to 1500 Muslims participating in the building's inaugural prayer service on Friday.

Meanwhile, a state spokesman, Ibrahim Kalin, said Turkey had invited the Pope to visit the refurbished landmark, which would remain "open to all". He added that more than 1500 historic Christian icons and other artworks would be rehoused at a museum, but said the building's 1300-year-old Christian mosaics and frescoes would be "covered up but not touched".

However, Bishop Bizetti said visitors would be required to remove their shoes and enter Hagia Sophia via separate entrances for men and women, who would also have to be veiled, adding that the atmosphere and use of the building would be quite different.

ROME — The Vatican Library has revamped its website to serve scholars better and facilitate navigation for the curious.

“Because of the pandemic, physical presence has become more difficult and, therefore, the website aims to be a place for welcoming, collaboration and openness,” Msgr. Cesare Pasini, the library’s prefect, told Vatican News July 22.

With a fresh look, easier and more intuitive navigation, and greater online services for researchers, the updated site went live in mid-July, right when the library closed for the summer months.

Pope encourages boy with disabilities on Camino de Santiago pilgrimage
23 July 2020, 18:00

Pope Francis writes a letter to a young man with disabilities after he completes the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain, praising his courage during the Covid-19 pandemic.
By Devin Watkins

Alvaro Calvente, a 15-year-old with a mental health condition from Malaga, Spain, completed the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage last week.

He was accompanied by a family friend and his father, who documented the journey of faith on Twitter (@CaminodeAlvaro).

Alvaro’s bio says he has “capabilities that you can’t even imagine.” He also says his dream is “to meet the Pope.”

Pilgrimage of prayers

Pope Francis went some way to making that dream a reality, with a letter dated 20 July which was published on the Diocese of Malaga’s website.

“Dear Alvaro,” wrote the Pope, “I received a letter from your father in which he told me that you have finished the Camino de Santiago and that, in your backpack, you carried not only your intentions, but also those of the many people who ‘joined you’ on the pilgrimage and asked you for prayers.”

Vatican publishes book containing Pope Francis’s “lockdown” homilies
23 July 2020, 11:30

Vatican Publishing House publishes downloadable .pdf publication containing Pope Francis’s daily homilies from Casa Santa Marta and prayers suggested for the Coronavirus pandemic.
By Sr Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp

As a sign of his closeness to those who were ill, under quarantine, or for whatever reason, were unable to leave their homes, Pope Francis began transmitting his daily morning Mass as Italy went into lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

From 9 March to 18 May, the Mass Pope Francis celebrated every morning was transmitted throughout the world. Thousands of people, regardless of religious affiliation, watched or listened through the various Vatican Media channels, and other radio and televisions stations or digital platforms that picked up the transmission. For many, Pope Francis’s Mass became a staple for coping with the adverse effects of the Coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdown.

Turkey names 3 imams, including professor, for Hagia Sophia
Associated Press  Jul 23, 2020

ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey on Thursday appointed appointed three imams for Hagia Sophia, one of them a professor of religious studies, as the nation prepares for the first Muslim prayers in the Istanbul landmark in 86 years following its conversion back into a mosque.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is scheduled join hundreds of worshipers Friday for prayers inside the former Byzantine cathedral that became a mosque with the 1453 Muslim conquest of Istanbul and then a museum in 1934 after Turkey became a secular republic.

Erdogan issued a decree restoring the iconic 6th century building as a mosque this month after a Turkish high court ruled that the Hagia Sophia had been illegally made into a museum more than eight decades ago. The move was met with dismay in Greece and the United States and from Christian church leaders.

Analysis: The Vatican and China Part II, Hong Kong
By Ed Condon

Washington, D.C. Newsroom, Jul 23, 2020 / 06:00 am MT (CNA).- Part 2 of a three part series examining the situation of the Church in China.

As the Vatican and China negotiate an extension of the 2018 deal that ceded a measure of control over episcopal appointments to the Communist Party, the Diocese of Hong Kong continues to be the center of an ecclesiastical and diplomatic minefield.

The Diocese of Hong Kong has been without a bishop since January 2019. Successive candidates selected by the Vatican, and approved by Pope Francis, have had to be withdrawn over political concerns.

In May, the Chinese state legislature on the mainland voted to impose a sweeping national security law on Hong Kong, outside of the territory’s own democratically elected legislature. The law criminalizes anything Beijing considers “foreign interference” and will permit Chinese security forces to operate in the city.

First Islamic prayers held in Hagia Sophia in 86 years
24 July 2020, 13:21

Islamic prayers were held on Friday in Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia basilica for the first time in 86 years. Pope Francis said on 12 July that he was “very saddened.
By Nathan Morley

TV pictures showed crowds forming at checkpoints surrounding old Istanbul before the main doors were opened. Over 20,000 policemen patrolled the area as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended Friday prayers along with several hundred special guests.

Erdogan issued a decree on 11 July ordering the historic Hagia Sophia to be opened for Muslim prayers on 24 July.

His order followed a ruling from Turkey’s top administrative court which revoked Hagia Sophia’s status as a museum.

The conversion sparked criticism from church and political leaders, who said the conversion for Muslim worship risks causing religious divisions.

At the Angelus address on 12 July, Pope Francis said he was “very saddened” when he thought about Hagia Sophia

Analysis: The Vatican and China Part III, Taiwan
By Ed Condon

Washington, D.C. Newsroom, Jul 24, 2020 / 06:00 am MT (CNA).- Part 3 of a three part series examining the situation of the Church in China. Part 1 examined the Church on the mainland, Part 2 examined the situation in Hong Kong.

With negotiations ongoing for an extension of the 2018 Vatican-China deal, the fate of Vatican-Taiwan relations may prove inextricable from the future of the deal - and of the Church in China.

When the 2018 deal was signed, ceding some control over episcopal appointments to the Communist Party, the Holy See stressed that it was a “pastoral” not “political” agreement, aimed at bringing together the underground Church loyal to Rome and the communist-controlled, schismatic Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association (CPCA).

But the “pastoral” split among China’s Catholics is rooted in the diplomatic split between Communist China and the Holy See. While the Vatican may insist its goals are purely ecclesiastical, the Chinese government is unlikely to make such a distinction. And with an extension of the deal under discussion, many are now asking if the Holy See is preparing to accept recognizing “one China” as the price of a unified Church.

Pope Francis: Becoming restless seekers of the Kingdom of Heaven
26 July 2020, 12:20

Pope Francis says we are called to become “healthily restless seekers of the Kingdom of Heaven,” as he reflects on the parables of the treasure hidden in the field and the pearl of great value during the Sunday Angelus.
By Christopher Wells

At the Angelus on Sunday, Pope Francis reflected on two of the parables told by Jesus in the day’s Gospel: that of the treasure hidden in the field, and that of the pearl of great value.

In both parables, those who finds the “precious” items, that which is most dear to them, sell everything they have in order to obtain them. “With these two similes,” said Pope Francis, “Jesus proposes to involve us in the building of the Kingdom of Heaven, presenting one of its essential characteristics: Those who fully pledge themselves to the Kingdom are those who are willing to stake everything.”

Pope Francis said that the “decisive and radical” decision to give up everything to seek even more precious treasures shows that “the building of the Kingdom requires not only the grace of God, but also the active willingness of the human person.”

Nantes cathedral fire: Altar server charged with arson
By Courtney Mares

Rome Newsroom, Jul 26, 2020 / 04:00 am MT (CNA).- A church volunteer has admitted to starting the fire at Nantes Cathedral and was charged with arson on Saturday.

The 39-year-old Rwandan refugee -- who had been detained and released by the police immediately following the July 18 fire at the Gothic cathedral -- was arrested again and indicted July 25 on “charges of destruction and damage by fire,” according to the Nantes public prosecutor.

The prosecutor Pierre Sennes said in a statement that the volunteer had confessed to the examining magistrate on July 25 to lighting three fires in the cathedral, Le Figaro reported.

“My client is today consumed with remorse and overwhelmed by the magnitude of the events,” Quentin Chabert, the lawyer of the accused told Presse-Océan July 25.

Agence France-Presse reported that the unnamed volunteer, who had been an altar server, was responsible for closing the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul on the night of the fire, which arson investigators said appeared to have started at three different points in the cathedral.

The volunteer had been detained by French police on the day of the suspected arson and questioned about alleged inconsistencies in his schedule, but was released without charge the following day.

However, developments in the arson investigation led the volunteer to be rearrested, indicted, and detained in pre-trial custody on July 25, according to the prosecutor.

Pope Francis in solidarity with the people of Ukraine
28 July 2020, 11:11

Almost 1 million people have personally felt the Pope’s “deep affection and solidarity” through the “Pope for Ukraine” project launched in June 2016.
By Gabriella Ceraso and Sr Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp

Prayer and charity: these are the two arms Pope Francis has repeatedly extended from the beginning of his Pontificate to the “dear Ukrainian people”, especially to those afflicted by a 6-year war on the eastern border of the nation. On numerous occasions, Pope Francis has brought them to the world’s attention. The last time was at the end of last Sunday's Angelus prayer. In that appeal, Pope Francis begged that a ceasefire implemented on Monday be respected so the Ukrainian people can enjoy a long-awaited peace.

His appeal comes just as the “Pope for Ukraine” project draws to a close. Pope Francis launched the “Pope for Ukraine” project in June 2016. The Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development has been supervising it. Just two years after the project launched, 16 million euros had been collected from all of Europe’s dioceses in addition to a personal donation from Pope Francis.

Egyptian Monsignor Yoannis Lahzi Gaid Concludes His Mission as the Pope’s Secretary
JULY 28, 2020 14:55  ROSA DIE ALCOLEA

Coptic Catholic Monsignor Yoannis Lahzi Gaid will conclude his mission as Pope Francis’ first personal Secretary on Saturday, July 31, 2020, although he will continue to work “very closely” with the Pontiff and the Holy See, reported Il Sismografo on Tuesday, July 28, 2020.

With all probability, the source continues, Monsignor Gaid, as well as the two previous personal assistants of the Pope, Alfred Xuareb and Fabian Pedacchio Leaniz, will continue being a close collaborator of Pope Francis from different positions and responsibilities. Monsignor Pedacchio works today in the Congregation for Bishops, and Monsignor Xuareb is Nuncio in Korea and Mongolia.

Monsignor Gaid is returning to his country to be close to his family, which includes several brothers, and also to follow new pastoral plans of the Coptic Catholic Church and, in particular, to address numerous files — as a member of the Vatican, together with Cardinal Ayuso Guixot, President of the Pontifical Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue –, of the Higher Committee for achieving the objectives of the Document on Human Fraternity (February 4, 2019).

Since the end of Benedict XVI’s pontificate, Archbishop Gaid has been the Pope’s “Arab voice” in official addresses and catecheses. Appointed in April 2014, Archbishop Gaid, who was born in Egypt in 1975, has carried out an “intelligent, delicate, and rich” pastoral service to the Church, from the outlying areas of Rome, and later to the Apostolic See, reported the Catholic information blog.

At the conclusion of his studies in Canon Law, in 2007 he began his collaboration with the Secretary of State, in particular in two delicate Nunciatures: Baghdad (Iraq) and Amman (Jordan).

The Present Secretary: Father Gonzalo Aemilius

After all these years of pontificate, the fourth (for now the last) personal Secretary of the Pope is Uruguayan Father Gonzalo Aemilius. The Pope’s previous personal assistants over these seven years were Alfred Xuareb, Fabian Pedacchio, and Yoannis Lahzi Gaid.

Pope Francis lauds solidarity initiative in Brazil
28 July 2020, 16:31

Pope Francis sends a message through Cardinal Michael Czerny praising the efforts of the Sem Terra Movement in the fight against hunger amid the Covid-19 crisis in Brazil.
By Vatican News

As the world continues to battle challenges caused by the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, the Sem Terra Movement (MST) – a movement of landless workers in Brazil - is helping vulnerable people fight the scourge of hunger. So far, the movement has distributed 2,500 tons of food.

In a message sent on 25 July, the Day of Rural Workers in Brazil, Cardinal Michael Czerny SJ, Under-secretary of the Migrants and Refugees Section of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, expressed Pope Francis’s appreciation for the solidarity initiative amid these trying times.

“On behalf of Pope Francis, and also on my part, we wish to express our joy at the kind gesture of food distribution being done by the families of the Agrarian Reform in Brazil,” reads the message.

“Sharing of the produce of the land to help needy families on the peripheries of cities is a sign of the kingdom of God that brings about solidarity and fraternal communion.”

China accused of hacking Vatican ahead of negotiations

CNA Staff, Jul 29, 2020 / 07:15 am MT (CNA).- State-sponsored hackers have reportedly targeted Vatican computer networks in an attempt to give China an advantage in negotiations to renew a provisional deal with the Holy See

A report, released July 28, said that hackers may have used a counterfeit condolence message from Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, to gain access to Vatican communications.

The report was compiled by the Insikt Group, the research arm of the U.S.-based cybersecurity company Recorded Future. Researchers said they had uncovered “a cyberespionage campaign attributed to a suspected Chinese state-sponsored threat activity group,” which they referred to as RedDelta.

Investigators said that RedDelta had targeted the Vatican and the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong from early May.

Other Catholic targets included the Hong Kong Study Mission to China and the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME) in Italy. The report noted that these organizations “have not been publicly reported as targets of Chinese threat activity groups prior to this campaign.”

Researchers said that the network intrusions took place ahead of talks to renew a “provisional agreement” between the Holy See and China, which was sealed in 2018 and expires in September.

Pope Francis accepts resignation of former nuncio to Chile
By Hannah Brockhaus

Vatican City, Jul 31, 2020 / 06:45 am MT (CNA).- Pope Francis Friday accepted the resignation of Vatican diplomat Archbishop Giuseppe Pinto as an apostolic nuncio.

Pinto, 68, resigned in April 2019 as nuncio to Croatia, a post he had held for just a year and nine months. His reasons for resigning were unclear, though local media speculated it was for health reasons.

Pinto, who has been in the diplomatic service of the Holy See for almost 20 years, was nuncio to Chile from 2007 to 2011.

In 2010, the abuse of Fr. Fernando Karadima came to light when victims made their accusations public, and in 2011, the Vatican found the Chilean priest guilty of the sexual abuse of minors and sentenced him to a life of prayer and penance.

In October 2018, Pinto was named as a witness in a complaint filed by three victims of Karadima, who claimed that Cardinal Francisco Javier Errázuriz Ossa had covered up Karadima’s abuse.
