Pope Francis: Trafficking a scourge against human dignity
01 August 2020, 09:41

Pope Francis sends a message to an online seminar on human trafficking, and calls this form of modern-day slavery a scourge against human dignity.
By Vatican News

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Argentina recently held an online seminar to mark the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.

In a message sent by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, Pope Francis described modern-day slavery as “a scourge that wounds the dignity of our weakest brothers and sisters.”

The Pope said our contemporary world is “sadly marked by a utilitarian perspective that views others according to the criteria of convenience and personal gain.”

This selfish point-of-view, he added, keeps others from experiencing the fullness of their unique and unrepeatable humanity.

Msgr Gaid ends service as Pope Francis's secretary, as Fr Fabio Salerno takes up post
01 August 2020, 10:15

The Director of the Holy See Press Office says a normal turnover of roles, as desired by Pope Francis, is taking place.
By Vatican News

Pope Francis has asked Father Fabio Salerno to become one of his personal secretaries. He is currently working in the Section for Relations with States in the Vatican Secretariat of State.

In addition, Msgr. Gaid, who became Pope Francis' personal secretary in April 2014, "is concluding his service."

Responding to questions from journalists, Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, confirmed the news on Saturday. He explained that as is the case in other curial roles, so too in this case, “a normal turnover of roles”, as desired by Pope Francis, is taking place.

Bruni also said Msgr Gaid “will continue his current role as a Member of the Higher Committee for Human Fraternity”. The Committee promotes the implementation of the "Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together", signed in February 2019 by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmed al-Tayyeb.

Father Salerno biography

Father Fabio Salerno will step into the position left vacant by Msgr Gaid.

He was born in 1979 in Catanzaro in Italy, and was ordained a priest in 2011 for the Archdiocese of Catanzaro-Squillace. He holds a doctorate from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome.

After going through the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, he served as secretary in the Apostolic Nunciature in Indonesia and at the Holy See's Permanent Mission to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.

Cardinal Parolin to visit Ars and Lourdes in August
01 August 2020, 15:00

The Vatican Secretary of State will pay a visit to Ars on the Feast of St John Vianney, and will celebrate Mass on the Solemnity of the Assumption in Lourdes.
By Sr Bernadette Mary Reis and Adelaide Patrignani

In early July, Father Patrice Chocholski, the Rector of the St John Vianney Shrine in Ars, confirmed the August 4th visit of the Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.

Cardinal Parolin accepted the invitation extended to him to celebrate Mass at 10:00 am and speak at a conference at 3:00 pm. The theme chosen for the conference is “Pope Francis and the priest: walking with the People of God.

This is the Cardinal’s first trip outside Italy since the coronavirus lockdown began in early March.

Encouragement for priests

In an interview with Vatican News, Fr Chocholski explains that Cardinal Parolin’s presence for this occasion comes just one year after Pope Francis wrote a letter to priests on the 160th anniversary of St John Vianney’s death. In that letter, Fr Chocholski says Pope Francis “encouraged us to be priests today through a different style.” He continued saying that priests need to look to St John Vianney as an example of how to be “configured with Christ.”  This, he said, is a “source of inspiration”.

Pope Francis urges everyone to obtain “Pardon of Assisi”
02 August 2020, 12:07

Pope Francis is encouraging Catholics to receive the plenary indulgence granted to St. Francis, which is known as the “Pardon of Assisi”.
By Devin Watkins

Speaking at the Angelus on Sunday, Pope Francis invited everyone to receive the “Pardon of Assisi”, which can be obtained from the evening of 1 August until midnight on 2 August.

St. Francis obtained this spiritual gift from God through the intercession of the Virgin Mary.

“It is a plenary indulgence that may be received by partaking of the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist and visiting a parish or Franciscan church, reciting the Creed, the Lord’s prayer and praying for the Pope and his intentions,” the Pope pointed out.

He recalled that the indulgence can even be obtained for a deceased person.

“How important it is to always put God’s forgiveness, which ‘generates heaven’ in us and around us, back at the center!” he said.

Pope at Angelus: Eucharist provides strength to care for others
02 August 2020, 12:08

Ahead of the Angelus prayer on Sunday, Pope Francis encourages the faithful to draw strength from the Eucharist and to show compassion and tenderness toward those in need.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis reflected on Jesus’ miracle of the multiplication of the loaves (Mt 14:13-21) during his catechesis at the Sunday Angelus.

He said the people had gone to listen to Jesus in a deserted place, because “His words and His gestures restore and bring hope.”

As the sun goes down and those present begin to seek food, Jesus tells His disciples to give them something to eat.

“Jesus wants to use this situation to educate His friends, both then and now, about God’s logic: the logic of taking responsibility for others,” said Pope Francis.

Benedict XVI is ill since visit to Germany
By Hannah Brockhaus

Rome Newsroom, Aug 3, 2020 / 03:21 am MT (CNA).- Pope emeritus Benedict XVI is sick with a bacterial infection and “very frail,” according to a German newspaper report.

Citing Benedict biographer Peter Seewald, German newspaper Passauer Neue Presse (PNP) reported Aug. 3 that the 93-year-old pope emeritus is suffering from facial erysipelas, or facial shingles, a bacterial infection of the skin which causes a painful, red rash.

The infection can also result in fever, headaches, and lymphedema. It is treated with antibiotics.

Seewald told PNP that Benedict has been “very frail” since his return from visiting his ailing older brother, Msgr. Georg Ratzinger, in Bavaria in June. Georg Ratzinger died July 1.

Seewald saw Benedict XVI at his Vatican home in the Mater Ecclesia monastery Aug. 1 to present him with a copy of his latest biography of the retired pope.

The journalist said despite his illness, Benedict was optimistic and stated he might take up writing again if his strength returns. Seewald also said the former pope’s voice is now “barely audible.”

PNP also reported Aug. 3 that Benedict has chosen to be buried in the former tomb of St. John Paul II in the crypt of St. Peter’s Basilica. The body of the Polish pope was moved into the upper part of the basilica when he was canonized in 2014.

Like John Paul II, Benedict XVI has written a spiritual testament which can be published after his death

AUG. 3, 2020
Archbishop Ganswein: Pope Emeritus Benedict’s Ailment Is ‘Not Serious’
The latest news of Benedict’s condition came from his biographer, Peter Seewald, who visited the Pope Emeritus over the weekend.
Edward Pentin

VATICAN CITY — The health condition of Pope Emeritus Benedict “does not give cause for particular concern, except for a 93-year-old man who is overcoming the most acute phase of a painful, but not serious, illness,” his personal secretary Archbishop Georg Gänswein said Monday.

His comments, given through the Vatican press office this evening, came in response to a report in this morning’s Passauer Neue Presse (PNP) that Benedict XVI was “seriously ill” and suffering from facial erysipelas, a bacterial infection of the skin that causes a painful, red rash.

The infection, which mostly affects infants and the elderly, can cause fever, headaches and lymphedema and is treated with antibiotics. A form of herpes or shingles, it is not considered life-threatening.

The news of Benedict’s condition came from his biographer, Peter Seewald, who visited the Pope Emeritus over the weekend to present him with a copy of his extensive new biography called Benedict XVI: A Life.

Pope Receives Mohammed Abdelsalam
AUGUST 03, 2020 16:25  LARISSA I. LÓPEZ

Pope Francis received Judge Mohammed Abdelsalam, former adviser of the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Secretary-General of the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity, said Abdelsalam himself on his Twitter account yesterday, August 2, 2020.

According to Il Sismografo, the news blog on the Vatican, a photograph was taken last Friday during Abelsalam’s visit at Saint Martha’s in the Vatican, during which the Pope’s former personal secretary, Monsignor Yoannis Lahzi Gaid was also present.

Working Meeting

In another Tweet written in Arabic, Abdelsalam wrote: “I had the pleasure to meet with His Holiness, Pope Francis, two days ago in the Vatican to discuss the projects and initiatives of the Committee of Human Fraternity. This is a holiday gift. “

Mohammed Abdelsalam explained to the Egyptian press that Pope Francis was very grateful for the fact that he had to leave his family at the height of the Eid Al-Adha feast (Feast of the Sacrifice) to come to the working meeting. “We will be your family here,” the Holy Father said. Then he gave his guest a beautiful silver vase.

Pope Francis tells youth at Medjugorje: be inspired by the Virgin Mary

Vatican City, Aug 2, 2020 / 07:30 am MT (CNA).- Pope Francis has urged young people gathered in Medjugorje to imitate the Virgin Mary by abandoning themselves to God.

He issued the appeal in a message to an annual youth meeting in Medjugorje, read out Aug. 1 by Archbishop Luigi Pezzuto, Apostolic Nuncio in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“The great example of the Church that is young in the heart, ready to follow Christ with new freshness and fidelity, always remains the Virgin Mary,” the pope said in the message, sent in Croatian and released by the Holy See press office Aug. 2.

“The power of Her ‘Yes’ and Her ‘Let it be unto me’ which she said before the angel, delights us at all times. Her ‘Yes’ means to participate and take risks, without any guarantee except knowing that she is the bearer of the promise. Her ‘Behold the handmaid of the Lord’ (Luke 1:38), the most beautiful example that tells us what happens when a man, in his freedom, surrenders himself into God’s hands.”

“Let this example inspire you and be your guideline!”

Pope Francis approved Catholic pilgrimages to Medjugorje in May 2019, but he has not made a deliberation on the authenticity of the alleged Marian apparitions reported at the site since 1981.

After the last public audience on 7 March, the Vatican moved the Audiences from St Peter’s Square to the library of the Apostolic Palace in order to comply with measures to stem the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. For the first time, on 18 March, Vatican News began offering an English commentary for the General Audience.

Pope Francis and his catechesis

As Pope Francis again picks up his weekly General Audience, it will be his 318th Catechesis. The only other time outside of July that General Audiences are suspended are during the Pope's papal trips. As soon as Pope Francis returns from such a trip, he always recaps his journey. Sometimes this happens the day following his return.

During the General Audience, the Pope gives a catechesis on the Christian faith. Short summaries of these catecheses are translated into 7 languages: French, English, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic and Polish. Longer summaries of these catecheses are published on Vatican News and full texts can be found on the official Vatican web portal. The General Audiences can be viewed live with playback available on the various language channels of the Vatican Media YouTube channel.

Pope at Audience launches new catechesis series on healing the world
05 August 2020, 09:49

Resuming his weekly general audience after the July recess, Pope Francis says that the Christian virtues of faith, hope and charity enable us to heal the physical, social and spiritual infirmities of our times, such as those revealed by the pandemic.
By Robin Gomes

In a catechesis live-streamed from the Apostolic Library on Wednesday morning, Pope Francis assures Christians that despite the Covid-19 pandemic continuing to infect and kill people, with many, especially the poor, going through uncertain times because of socio-economic problems, God’s Kingdom of healing and of salvation is present, as Jesus assures us in Luke’s Gospel.

Pope visits Saint Mary Major on feast of Basilica's dedication

Pope Francis visits the Basilica of Saint Mary Major on Wednesday afternoon, where he prays before the image of Our Lady, Salus Populi Romani.
By Vatican News

Pope Francis made a surprise visit to Saint Mary Major on Wednesday, the feast of the dedication of the Papal Basilica.

At the church, the Holy Father knelt for a few moments in prayer in the Borghese Chapel, before the image of Our Lady, Salus Populi Romani (“Savation of the Roman People”).

The legend of the miraculous snowfall

August 5th is marked throughout the universal Church as the anniversary of the dedication of Saint Mary Major. In the Roman Rite, is observed liturgically as an optional memorial.

The origins of the Basilica are shrouded in legend.

According to a late tradition, on the night of August 4-5, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Pope Liberius, and to a Roman patrician named John, requesting that they build a church on a spot that would be shown to them.

The first part of August in Rome is notoriously hot and humid. But on the morning of August 5, 358, the people of Rome were greeted with an almost unbelievable sight: a blanket of snow covering a part of the top of the Esquiline Hill, indicating the place where the church should be built.

For centuries, the Church in Rome has celebrated the dedication of the Saint Mary Major, also known as the Liberian Basilica, with special rituals. During the singing of the Gloria at the principle Solemn Mass, a portion of the ceiling is opened, and white jasmine petals are showered on the congregation in commemoration of the miraculous origins of the Basilica.

By Vatican News

Pope Francis, with a Rescriptum published by the Vatican Press Office on Thursday, has extended the jurisdiction of the Eastern Catholic Patriarchs over the entire Arabian Peninsula, which includes the Apostolic Vicariates of Northern and Southern Arabia.

The latest announcement – fruit of careful evaluation by the Pope and the appropriate Dicasteries of the Roman Curia -  is in response to requests made by the Patriarchs and Apostolic Vicars of Northern and Southern Arabia, in view of the greater spiritual good of the faithful, as well as the historical prerogatives of their jurisdiction over the territory.

This new provision affects six Eastern Catholic Patriarchal Churches: Alexandria of the Copts, Antioch of the Maronites, Antioch of the Syrians, Antioch of the Greek-Melkites, Babylon of the Chaldeans and Cilicia of the Armenians.
