Pope at Angelus: Gossip 'a plague more awful than Covid-19'
06 September 2020, 12:13

At the Angelus prayer on Sunday, Pope Francis explores Jesus’ invitation to admonish members of the community who have sinned, and says fraternal correction builds up the Church while gossip tears it down.
By Devin Watkins

Ahead of the traditional Marian prayer of the Angelus, Pope Francis reflected on the day’s Gospel (Mt 18:15-20), in which Jesus speaks about fraternal correction.

The Pope said the episode invites us to consider two dimensions of the Christian life: the communitarian, “which demands safeguarding communion” and the personal, “which obliges attention and respect for every individual conscience.”

Jesus, said the Holy Father, offers a three-step approach to correcting our brother or sister who has sinned.

Pope Francis accepts resignation of Duluth Bishop-elect Michel Mulloy after abuse allegation
By Hannah Brockhaus

Vatican City, Sep 7, 2020 / 05:15 am MT (CNA).- Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of the Bishop-elect of Duluth, Minnesota, Michel J. Mulloy, after an accusation that he abused a minor in the 1980s surfaced in early August.

Mulloy, 66, was appointed to lead the Minnesota diocese on June 19, and his consecration and installation as bishop were scheduled to take place Oct. 1.

According to a statement from the Diocese of Rapid City, where Mulloy had been administrator since August 2019, the diocese on Aug. 7 “received notification of an allegation against Father Mulloy of sexual abuse of a minor in the early 1980s.”

The diocese said it “has no other allegations of sexual abuse involving Father Mulloy.”

Press releases from the Vatican and from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops did not state a reason for the bishop-elect’s resignation.

“TerraFutura”: a new book explores Pope Francis’ vision of integral ecology
08 September 2020, 12:43

Three conversations between the author of “TerraFutura” and Pope Francis set the tone of a new book by “Slow Food” founder and environmental activist, Carlo Petrini.
By Vatican News

The working translation of the title of the Italian book on the shelves from 9 September is “TerraFutura. Conversations with Pope Francis on integral ecology”.

The author, Carlo Petrini, is the founder of the global “Slow Food” movement, which was established in the 1980s to safeguard regional traditions in the face of a spiralling “fast food” consumeristic cultural and economic trend. It has since evolved to embrace a comprehensive approach to food and lifestyle that recognizes the strong connection between behaviour, food production and consumption, economics and the planet.

This latest book by Petrini stems from his desire to uphold and encourage Pope Francis’ invitation to tackle and change a destructive pattern that has led to widespread social and environmental injustice and take action to “Care for our Common Home”, as the Pope writes in his 2015 encyclical “Laudato Sí”.

Pope Francis: Confront Covid with unbounded love
09 September 2020, 10:03

At the General Audience on Wednesday, Pope Francis says it is “time to improve our social love.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis focused his attention on the concept of the “common good” in his catechesis at Wednesday’s General Audience.

Seeking the common good together

Continuing his reflections on “Healing the World,” Pope Francis said we can emerge from the coronavirus crisis better than before “if we all seek the common good together.” At the same time, he lamented that we are beginning to see “partisan interests emerging,” with some people seeking to take advantage of the crisis for selfish purposes.  “The Christian response to the pandemic and to the consequent socio-economic crisis is based on love,” the Pope said, and especially the love of God for us. We in turn are called to love everyone – not only our friends and family, but even our enemies. This is difficult, the Pope acknowledged, but it is an “art that can be learned and improved.”

‘Brothers All’: An Encyclical of the Blood of Martyrs
SEPTEMBER 09, 2020 13:55

Enlightenment of a Franciscan

“Brothers All” is the title of the Encyclical on fraternity and social friendship, which Pope Francis will sign on Saturday, October 3, 2020, in Assisi.

This beginning is taken from Brother Francis’ sixth admonition” “Let us look with attention, brothers all, at the Good Shepherd, who endured the Passion of the Cross to save His sheep. The Lord’s sheep followed Him in His tribulation and persecution, in shame and hunger, in sickness and temptation and other such things and, because of that, they received eternal life from the Lord. Therefore, it is a great shame for us, servants of God, that the Saints did their deeds, and we want to receive glory and honor only by telling them” (FF 155).

Newark archdiocese bought second beach house for use by McCarrick

CNA Staff, Sep 9, 2020 / 11:30 am MT (CNA).- Months before officials in the Archdiocese of Newark sold a beach house used by former cardinal Theodore McCarrick for sexual abuse and coercion, the archdiocese bought a second beach house on the Jersey Shore, at which McCarrick reportedly hosted friends and courted donors.

The second beach house, according to an investigative report from northjersey.com, was purchased in 1997 by the Newark archdiocese from the neighboring Diocese of Metuchen. The house was located in Brick, New Jersey, on Barnegat Bay.

The archdiocese bought thar home four months before it sold the Sea Girt, New Jersey beach house which McCarrick was alleged to have used for sexual abuse and coercion since the 1980s.

Both homes were owned by the Diocese of Metuchen, which McCarrick led as a bishop from 1981 to 1986, before they were purchased by the Archdiocese of Newark, which McCarrick led from 1986 to 2000.

Holy See: Corruption, real danger for peace and security
10 September 2020, 15:25

The fight against corruption is the key theme of the Holy See's intervention at the final meeting of the 28th OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum underway in Prague, Czech Republic from 10-11 September.
By Vatican News

In a discourse delivered  to the final meeting of the 28th Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's (OSCE) Economic and Environmental Forum, Archbishop Charles Balvo, Apostolic Nuncio to the Czech Republic and Head of the Holy See’s Delegation, underlined that  “corruption is a real danger to the peace and security of our OSCE region.”

Corruption and the pandemic

The Archbishop also said, “there is reason to be concerned that the vast amount of funds released for Covid-19 pandemic recovery has already attracted criminal activities, which include the risk that those most in need of financial support will remain without the urgently necessary help.”

The Archbishop said it was important to acknowledge that “corruption occurs, to varying degrees, in each of the OSCE participating States.”

He added, “only by acknowledging the existence of corruption will we be able to fight against it.”

While the current pandemic is a “tremendous test” for the international community, Archbishop Balvo also pointed out, it provides a real opportunity “to seek new and innovative solutions that are not divisive, politicized or partial, but that truly seek the common good and the integral human development of all.”

Holy See and transparency

With that in mind, the Archbishop noted that on 1 June 2020, Pope Francis published new procedures and juridical controls for “transparency, control and competition in the procedures for awarding public contracts of the Holy See and Vatican City State”.

China’s foreign ministry: Vatican deal has been ‘implemented successfully
By Courtney Mares

Vatican City, Sep 10, 2020 / 04:00 pm MT (CNA).- A spokesman for China’s foreign ministry said Thursday that China’s interim deal with the Vatican has been “implemented successfully.

He made the remark days before the provisional agreement signed by the Vatican and China on Sept. 22, 2018, is due to expire.

“With the concerted efforts from both sides, the interim agreement on the appointment of bishops between China and the Vatican has been implemented successfully since it was signed around two years ago,” Zhao Lijian, spokesman for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a press conference Sept. 10.

Bloomberg reported Sept. 9 that two anonymous sources had said that the deal would be renewed in the coming weeks.

Following the agreement, and in line with the Chinese Communist Party’s program of “sinicization,” state officials in different regions of China have continued to remove crosses and demolish church buildings, and underground Catholics and clergy continue to report harassment and detention.

The Chinese government spokesman went on to say that the Vatican and China had “accumulated more mutual trust and consensus through a series of positive interactions” since the beginning of 2020, citing mutual support during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the coronavirus pandemic, the state-affiliated Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association and the Zhejiang Province’s Chinese Catholic educational administration committee issued new regulations on the reopening of churches requiring Chinese “patriotism” to be added to the celebration of the liturgy.

Since the Vatican-China deal was signed, Pope Francis has not spoken publicly about the plight of the Uyghurs or the Hong Kong protest movement.

The terms of the 2018 provisional agreement between the Holy See and China have not been released. However it is known that the accord aimed to regularize the country’s government-appointed bishops who had been out of communion with Rome.

Pope reiterates human dimension of care of the sick
11 September 2020, 11:57

Pope Francis on Friday addressed participants in the annual global meeting of the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS), which is being held online from September 10-13.
By Robin Gomes

Pope Francis on Friday reiterated the human dimension of the care of the sick, saying every patient is a person who is defined by much more than his or her clinical data. “When a sick person senses that he or she is being treated as a unique person, the result is greater confidence in the medical team and greater hope for a positive outcome,” he told participants in the annual global meeting of the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS).

Originally planned to take place in Rome, Italy, the IGCS 2020 meeting is being held digitally from September 10-13, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  The mission of the Society, which has over 1,000 members representing more than 80 countries, is to enhance the care of women with gynecologic cancer worldwide through education and training and public awareness.

The Holy See Press Office on Friday confirmed that Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle has tested positive with Covid-19 after a swab test.

"Cardinal Tagle actually tested positive for Covid-19 with a pharyngeal swab carried out yesterday on his arrival in Manila,” said a brief statement by Matteo Bruni, the Director of the Holy See Press Office.

Responding to journalists, Bruni said the Cardinal “does not have any symptoms and will remain in mandatory self-quarantine in the Philippines, where he is located”.  “In the meantime,” he added, “necessary checks are being carried out among those who have come into contact with His Eminence in recent days.”

He said Cardinal Tagle had undergone a swab test in Rome on September 7, which turned out negative.

Belarus renews invitation to Pope Francis amid talks

CNA Staff, Sep 12, 2020 / 06:00 am MT (CNA).- Belarus renewed its invitation to Pope Francis to visit the country Friday during talks with a senior Vatican official.

Vladimir Makei, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, said that the invitation remained open amid tensions between the local Catholic Church and the government, BelTA, the state-owned national news agency, reported Sept. 11.

President Alexander Lukashenko invited Pope Francis to visit Belarus during a trip to the Vatican in 2016.

Makei met with Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican’s Secretary for Relations with States, a week after the leader of the Catholic Church in Belarus was blocked from returning to his homeland.

Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz, a Belarusian citizen, was turned back by border guards when he attempted to return to Belarus Aug. 31 following a trip to Poland.

According to BelTA, Makei told Gallagher: “Your visit proves that Belarus and the Holy See have special relations of mutual understanding and trust. We are satisfied with the dynamics of the development of contacts at the high and highest levels.”
