Pope Francis meets Armenian Apostolic Church leader amid clashes in Nagorno-Karabakh
By Hannah Brockhaus

Vatican City, Sep 28, 2020 / 10:00 am MT (CNA).- Pope Francis met with Armenian Apostolic Church leader Karekin II Sunday morning, moving up an appointment scheduled for Monday, because of growing clashes with Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh territory.

Nagorno-Karabakh is an area internationally recognized as belonging to Azerbaijan but controlled by ethnic Armenians. Conflict over the enclave, which erupted into war from 1988 to 1994, has grown in recent months, with Turkey declaring support for Azerbaijan and other states calling for a diplomatic resolution.

With new fighting at the border during the night of Sept. 26-27, Karekin II, known as the Catholicos of All Armenians, asked to move up his meeting with Pope Francis. The two met a day early, on the morning of Sept. 27, before the pope’s weekly Angelus address.

The focus of the approximately 40-minute meeting was the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, according to ACI Stampa, CNA’s partner agency, which spoke to Catholicos Karekin II before he left Rome Sept. 27.

Pope to Marian pilgrims: "Mary embraces us all”
28 September 2020, 11:50

Because of the pandemic, this year’s pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Luján in Argentina, became a virtual event. Pope Francis sent a brief video message to the pilgrims.
By Robin Gomes

"Mary embraces us and unites us."  With this prayer in a video message, Pope Francis expressed his spiritual participation in the 40th pilgrimage to the Marian shrine of Our Lady of Luján in his native Argentina.

Amid difficulties

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the September 23 to 26 pilgrimage took place in a virtual way.  "Sometimes, and not only sometimes,” the Pope said, “the path becomes difficult.”  “And in this moment of pandemic and numerous threats to health, of so much fear, of so many needs,” he noted, “it is even more difficult."  Hence, he said, “We need the Mother to embrace us - words that also resonate in the motto of the pilgrimage, ‘Mother, embrace us, we want to keep walking’."

Pope Francis asks order to keep spreading devotion to St. Michael the Archangel

Vatican City, Sep 28, 2020 / 05:30 am MT (CNA).- Pope Francis encouraged a religious order Sunday to continue promoting devotion to St. Michael the Archangel.

In a message released Sept. 27, the pope congratulated members of the Congregation of St. Michael the Archangel on the forthcoming centenary of their approval by Church authorities.

“I hope that your Religious Family can continue to spread the apostolate of St. Michael the Archangel, mighty victor over the powers of evil, seeing in this a great work of mercy for the soul and body,” he said in a message dated July 29 and addressed to Fr. Dariusz Wilk, the congregation’s superior general.

The Polish Blessed Bronisław Markiewicz founded the congregation, also known as the Michaelite Fathers, in 1897. He wanted to spread devotion to the archangel, while following the teachings of St. John Bosco, founder of the Salesians, which he had joined 10 years earlier.

Pope Expresses Gratitude for Their Service

On Saturday, September 26, 2020,  at the Altar of the Chair of the Vatican Basilica, the Holy Father Francis presided over the Eucharistic Celebration for the Vatican Gendarmerie Corps, on the occasion of the Feast of St. Michael the Archangel, patron, and protector of the Italian State Police and the Corps of the Gendarmerie Vatican.

We report below the text of the homily that the Pope gave off the cuff during the Mass:

Pope Francis,  this morning, Sept. 28, 2020, was in the midst of the largest (but safely following protocols) gathering since the COVID outbreak, and for a joyous occasion: the ceremony to commemorate the 75-year anniversary of the institution of the Inspectorate of the Public Security of the Vatican.

ZENIT’s Senior Vatican Correspondent was invited as the Vatican’s Paul VI welcomed a smiling, and warm Pope Francis, following a morning of talented tenors (including a former police officer), and the official police chorus, which performed ‘America, the Beautiful’ among many other beloved songs. The General Audiences in September have taken place with faithful in the San Damaso Courtyard of the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace, which accommodates roughly 500 people. Today’s event gathered a couple thousand masked invitees and officials. Everyone attending had to maintain proper social distancing, sanitize hands, have temperatures taken and pass through security clearance.

Pope Francis appoints extra prosecutor to Vatican City court
By Hannah Brockhaus

Vatican City, Sep 28, 2020 / 06:30 am MT (CNA).- Pope Francis Monday named an Italian lawyer and professor of commercial law to work as an additional prosecutor in the Vatican City State’s court.

Gianluca Perone teaches commercial law at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. His expertise includes commercial and corporate banking and contract law.

He was named an “applied” promoter of justice -- a position similar to prosecutor -- of the Vatican City tribunal, a position lasting three years created by Pope Francis in a law promulgated in March.

Law CCCLI, signed by Pope Francis on March 13, reformed the judicial system of Vatican City, providing enhanced safeguards for the independence of judges and prosecutors in the city state to better address economic, financial, and criminal cases in the sovereign territory.

The law established that the pope, “in the face of specific needs,” may nominate one or more “applied promoters of justice” for a period of three years.

After Cardinal Angelo Becciu resigned from his position in the Roman Curia and from the rights of cardinals Sept. 24, multiple Vatican sources told CNA that both Vatican prosecutors and the Italian Guardia di Finanza were expected to lay criminal charges against him.

Several of Becciu’s employees and closest collaborators have also come under investigation by Vatican prosecutors, CNA has reported, and according to Italian daily La Repubblica, an additional six people are expected to be criminally charged alongside Becciu.

"Come and See": theme for World Day of Communications
29 September 2020, 12:00

The theme for the 2021 World Day of Social Communications chosen by Pope Francis echo the words of the Apostle Philip, so as to recall that communication consists in "encountering people as and where they are".
By Vatican News

The theme for the 55th World Day of Social Communications, to be held in May 2021 was released on Tuesday. The theme is:

“Come and see” (Jn 1,46). Communicating, encountering people as and where they are.

The words “Come and see” are central to the Gospel. Before the Gospel is proclaimed, prior to words, there are "looks, testimonies, experiences, encounters and closeness. In a word, life."

These words, from the Gospel of John (1, 43-46) were chosen by Pope Francis, with the subtitle “Communicating, encountering people as and where they are”.

The Holy See and China: reasons for Agreement on appointment of bishops
29 September 2020, 14:30

By October a decision is expected regarding the Vatican proposal to extend the Provisional Agreement ad experimentum: “It is worth continuing”, Cardinal Parolin explains.
By Andrea Tornielli

The Provisional Agreement signed on 22 September 2018 between the Holy See and the People’s Republic of China regarding the appointment of bishops, which went into effect a month later, will expire this coming 22 October. Signed in Beijing, the term of the ad experimentum Provisional Agreement was set for two years after which it would eventually be definitively confirmed or some other decision reached. Recently, the Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin explained that the intention is to propose an extension to the Chinese authorities, maintaining the Agreement as provisional, “as done in these first two years, so as to further verify its usefulness for the Church in China”. Notwithstanding the lengthy period of time and difficulties, aggravated in the last ten months due to the pandemic, Parolin said, “it seems to me that a direction has been marked out that is worth continuing; then we will see”.

Vatican official hails ‘positive’ results of China deal amid report that Holy See delegation is heading to Beijing

Vatican City, Sep 29, 2020 / 10:00 am MT (CNA).- A Vatican official hailed the “positive” results of the Holy See’s provisional agreement with China Tuesday amid reports that a Holy See delegation is heading to Beijing to extend the deal.

Tornielli’s article appeared shortly before U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was due to arrive in Rome for talks with Parolin and Archbishop Paul Gallagher, Vatican Secretary for Relations with States.

In an exclusive interview with CNA Sept. 25, Pompeo said that he planned to discuss human rights violations in China, and urge Vatican officials to speak out about Chinese persecution of religious groups.

Pope Francis names leading physicist to pontifical academy

Vatican City, Sep 29, 2020 / 06:30 am MT (CNA).- Pope Francis appointed the director-general of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) Tuesday to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.

The Holy See press office said Sept. 29 that the pope had named Fabiola Gianotti as an “ordinary member” of the academy.

Gianotti, an Italian experimental particle physicist, is the first female director-general of CERN, which operates the world’s largest particle accelerator at its laboratory on the border between France and Switzerland.

Last year, Gianotti became the first director-general since CERN was founded in 1954 to be re-elected for a second full five-year term.

On July 4, 2012, she announced the discovery of the Higgs Boson particle, sometimes referred to as the “God particle,” whose existence was first predicted by the theoretical physicist Peter Higgs in the 1960s.

Update: Cardinal Becciu

Cardinal Becciu's lawyer resigns over social media photos

CNA Staff, Sep 29, 2020 / 02:30 pm MT (CNA).- The lawyer representing Cardinal Angelo Becciu has resigned over criticism of his social media activities.

Ivano Iai, who had been handling legal and media matters for the cardinal and his family, announced that he had withdrawn from the case after criticism of pictures he posted on social media.

Iai, apparently a recreational body-builder, posted a series of photographs of himself in revealing swimwear on different social media sites, including Instagram and Twitter. In the photos, Iai appears in seaside settings, and strikes a number of attitudes and poses, including arching backwards across a rock and sporting playfully in the surf.

The attorney's Instagram account has now been set to private.

Iai served as attorney and spokesman for Cardinal Becciu and his family after the cardinal's resignation last week. The lawyer confirmed to CNA Sept. 29 that he had quit the role.

“I gave up the job," Iai said in a statement sent to CNA on Tuesday, saying he was “sorry” that his social media presence had added to the difficulties of the cardinal and his family.

Cardinal Lorenzo Baldisseri turns 80, reducing electoral college to 120
2020/09/29

Card. Lorenzo Baldisseri has turned 80 years old. His age now disqualifies him from voting in a conclave.

He's a clergyman with a lot of experience at the Vatican. He was a nuncio and second-in-command of the Congregation for Bishops. He's a huge lover of classical music and piano. In fact, he's given a few Christmas benefit concerts.

MSGR. LORENZO BALDISSERI
Secretary, Congregation for Bishops

“The piano for me is a companion. I remember Nelson Freire, a great pianist, once said, 'I play the piano and can tell if it loves me or not.' It's kind of like that. In 1991, I bought one, and this piano has accompanied me, from Paraguay to India, from India to Brazil, and now in Rome.”

In 2012, Benedict XVI named him secretary of the College of Cardinals. Thus, he was allowed to participate in the conclave that elected Pope Francis. As per tradition, Baldisseri, as secretary, collected the newly elected pope's red cardinal's cap, a foreshadow of what was to happen a year later, when Pope Francis would name Baldisseri cardinal. It isn't out of the ordinary for secretaries of the College of Cardinals to be named cardinals sooner or later.

Pope at Audience: 'Make love go viral in the light of faith'
30 September 2020, 10:30

Concluding his series of catecheses on the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, Pope Francis reflects on the path of hope and love, as the world continues to suffer.
By Vatican News

Pope Francis began his General Audience on Wednesday noting that in recent weeks “we have reflected together” on how to heal the world from the suffering highlighted by the pandemic.

As disciples of Jesus, “allowing ourselves to be guided by faith, hope and charity”, he said, we have proposed to follow in His steps, opting for the poor, rethinking the use of material goods and taking care of our common home.

New Apostolic Letter highlights St Jerome’s love of Scripture
30 September 2020, 12:15

Pope Francis has written an Apostolic Letter for the 1600th anniversary of the death of Saint Jerome the “great doctor and father of the Church, who put the Bible at the centre of his life.”
By Vatican News

St Jerome bequeathed to the Church “devotion to the Sacred Scripture, a ‘living and tender love’ for the written word of God,” says Pope Francis in a new Apostolic Letter on the 1600th anniversary of the death of the great Doctor and Father of the Church.

“Jerome’s profound knowledge of the Scriptures, his zeal for making their teaching known, his skill as an interpreter of texts, his ardent and at times impetuous defence of Christian truth, his asceticism and harsh eremitical discipline, his expertise as a generous and sensitive spiritual guide”, the Pope writes in Scripturae Sacrae affectus ("Devotion to Sacred Scripture"), “all these make him, sixteen centuries after his death, a figure of enduring relevance for us, the Christians of the twenty-first century.”

Pope Francis recognizes miracle attributed to Italian laywoman who died in 1997

Vatican City, Sep 30, 2020 / 10:00 am MT (CNA).- Pope Francis advanced the sainthood cause Tuesday of an Italian woman who died in 1997 after touching the lives of thousands of people despite suffering from progressive paralysis

The pope authorized the Congregation for the Causes of Saints Sept. 29 to promulgate a decree recognizing a miracle attributed to Gaetana “Nuccia” Tolomeo, paving the way for her beatification.

He also authorized decrees relating to four priests killed during the Spanish Civil War and two founders of religious orders.

This was the first time that the Congregation for the Causes of Saints had promulgated decrees since its prefect, Cardinal Angelo Becciu, resigned Sept. 24.

On Wednesday, the United States Embassy to the Holy See hosted a symposium in Rome. Advancing and Defending International Religious Freedom through Diplomacy was its theme.

Shared priority for US and Holy See

In her welcoming remarks, U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Callista Gingrich highlighted: “Promoting and securing the universal right of religious freedom is a shared priority for the United States and the Holy See”. This collaboration preserves this right, she continued, at a “critical time” in which international religious freedom must be advanced and defended.

By Courtney Mares

“Nowhere is religious freedom under assault more than it is inside of China today,” Pompeo said Sept. 30.

Cardinal Pell Returns to Rome, as Legal Proceedings Against Cardinal Becciu Are Being Organized

The Australian cardinal’s return is unrelated to the scandal enveloping the Italian cardinal, but previously they had opposing perspectives on how to oversee Vatican financial management.
Edward Pentin  Vatican  September 30, 2020

VATICAN CITY — Just days after the resignation of Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciù, Cardinal George Pell returns to Rome tomorrow afternoon and is expected to take up a number of tasks assigned to him by Pope Francis, the Register has learned.

The former Vatican treasurer is expected to stay in Rome for some months and possibly resume his work as a member of various dicasteries. He may also be called upon unofficially to help with some aspects of financial reform.

Until his return to Australia to be tried for sexual abuse, for which he was fully acquitted and freed, the cardinal was a member of the Council of Cardinals advising the Pope on Church reform, as well as serving as prefect for the Secretariat for the Economy.

Pope Francis is known to respect the cardinal and values his frankness and honesty. After he was freed, the Pope made it clear that he did not want the cardinal to clear up his belongings in Rome, underscoring his wish that the cardinal might one day return to the Vatican.

Vatican Secretary of State Comments After US Embassy to Holy See’s Event for ‘Advancing & Defending Religious Freedom Through Diplomacy’ With US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo
SEPTEMBER 30, 2020 13:21  DEBORAH CASTELLANO LUBOV

Even if only little and gradual steps are evident, through renewing the provisional agreement with China, our hope is to work toward greater religious freedom…

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, expressed this to ZENIT when its Senior Vatican Correspondent asked him about underlying motivations behind the China deal.

The Italian prelate was speaking at the private event, titled “Advancing and Defending Religious Freedom Through Diplomacy,” today, Sept. 30, 2020. Organized by U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See, Callista Gingrich, the event took place in a large room of the Westin Excelsior on Rome’s iconic Via Veneto, next door to the American Embassy, in compliance with anti-Covid 19 rules and provisions.

US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, Cardinal Parolin, and Vatican Foreign Minister, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, gave the keynote speeches, and were introduced by a reflection of Ambassador Callista Gingrich. (ZENIT will be bringing our readers interventions).

Cardinal Parolin will meet U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, privately tomorrow in the Vatican.

After expressing that despite opposition the Vatican plans to go ahead with the renewal of the Provisional Agreement, ZENIT asked whether the Vatican’s motivation to continue with the agreement was to eventually lead to better religious freedom in the Asian country.

Pope authorizes new decrees on causes of sainthood
30 September 2020, 16:35

Pope Francis has authorized the promulgation of three new decrees regarding seven candidates, bringing them a step closer to sainthood.
By Vatican News

Pope Francis on Tuesday, authorized the Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints to promulgate the three decrees. There is a decree a miracle and another on martyrdom.  Two separate decrees are on the heroic virtues of two women.

Of the 7 persons, 5 have been cleared for beatification.  They are four martyrs and a layperson through whose intercession a miracle has been recognized.

The decree on the miracle is attributed to Venerable Servant of God Gaetana Tolomeo, known as Nuccia, an Italian layman who was born on April 10, 1936 in Catanzaro and died there on January 24, 1997.  He is to be declared a Blessed.

Tomb of Carlo Acutis is opened for veneration ahead of beatification
By Courtney Mares

Rome Newsroom, Oct 1, 2020 / 09:00 am MT (CNA).- The tomb of Venerable Carlo Acutis was opened for public veneration Thursday ahead of the computer-programming teen’s beatification.

A spokeswoman for Acutis’ beatification told CNA that the entire body was present, but “not incorrupt.”

“Today we … see him again in his mortal body. A body that has passed, in the years of burial in Assisi, through the normal process of decay, which is the legacy of the human condition after sin has removed it from God, the source of life. But this mortal body is destined for resurrection,” Archbishop Domenico Sorrentino of Assisi said at a Mass at the opening of the tomb Oct. 1.

The bishop explained that Acutis’ body was “reassembled with art and love.”

The teen's body will be available for veneration in a glass tomb until Oct. 17, during a celebration of Acutis' life in Assisi.
