Decree extends indulgence for the faithful departed throughout November
23 October 2020, 12:00

The Apostolic Penitentiary announces modifications to the Plenary Indulgence for the deceased during the month of November.
By Sr Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp

Many of the Church’s pastors have requested an adaptation to the requirements to obtain the Plenary Indulgence for the deceased in the month of November. Thus, “by the special mandate of His Holiness Pope Francis”, the Apostolic Penitentiary released on Friday some changes to the normal practice. The Decree containing these modifications was signed on 22 October, the liturgical memorial of Pope St John Paul II.

Plenary Indulgence during month of November

Due to the coronavirus pandemic and the need to avoid large groups from forming where prohibited, the Plenary Indulgence applicable to thedeceased by those who visit a cemetery has been extended beyond the normal dates of 1 to 8 November. This year, the indulgence can be obtained by anyone who visits a cemetery, even if only mentally, on any day in November, and devoutly prays for the faithful departed.

Plenary Indulgence for Feast of All Souls’ Day

Regarding the Plenary Indulgence attached to All Souls’ Day, 2 November, this year, it can be obtained not only on the preceding or succeeding Sunday, or on the actual Feast day, but on any other day of the month chosen by each member of the faithful. In this case, the indulgence is obtained by “devoutly visiting a church or an oratory”, along with the recitation of the Our Father and the Creed, and the other requirements associated with a Plenary Indulgence.

The homebound

For anyone who cannot leave their home for various reasons, including anti-Covid restrictions, they too can obtain the Plenary Indulgence by “uniting themselves spiritually to other members of the faithful”. In this case, the condition of being “completely detached from sin” and the intention of completing the other requirements for obtaining a Plenary Indulgence remain. These conditions are Sacramental Confession, reception of Holy Communion and a prayer for the Holy Father’s intentions.

The Decree suggests that such prayer take place before an “image of Jesus or the Blessed Virgin Mary”. Among the various prayers that are recommended are “prayers for the deceased, Morning or Evening Prayer from the Office of the Dead, the Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, meditating on various Gospel passages proposed for the liturgy of the Dead, or completing a work of mercy by offering to God the suffering and discomforts of one’s own life”.

On 19 October, the Higher Committee for Human Fraternity launched the search for candidates for the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity.

Just a few days later, on Friday, the Judging Panel held its first meeting in Rome and were received by Pope Francis as well. Members of the team discussed the judging process, rules and criteria they will use in determining who the winner will be. The information was made public through a press release.

The Zayed Award for Human Fraternity is “providing the opportunity to nominate all personalities and institutions that have made significant contributions to the service of humanity from around the world.” This is the first time that the award is open to nominations. Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar were the first recipients of the prize in 2019 in recognition of “their role in the signing of the Document on Human Fraternity.”

23 October 2020, 15:28

Update:  Pope Francis on civil unions in the documentary “Francesco."

Mexico broadcaster: Pope’s civil union quote not broadcast

MEXICO CITY — A Mexican television broadcaster confirmed Thursday that Pope Francis’ bombshell comments endorsing same-sex civil unions were made during a May 2019 interview that was never broadcast in its entirety.

Broadcaster Televisa said Thursday that the emphasis of its interview was on clergy sexual abuse and suggested it didn’t consider the comments on civil unions as newsworthy because Francis had previously indicated support for them.

The Vatican, which had the full interview in its archives, apparently allowed the comments to be aired now in the documentary “Francesco,” which premiered Wednesday.

In the movie, which was shown at the Rome Film Festival, Francis said gays shouldn’t be kicked out of families or made miserable. “What we have to have is a civil union law; that way they are legally covered,” Francis said.

But a source in Mexico familiar with the interview said the original raw footage the Vatican provided to Televisa from the interview did not include the quote on civil unions. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

The Vatican did not respond to requests for comment.

When the pope consents to such interviews, the Vatican television unit films them and provides the full footage to the correspondent in question to edit and choose what to use. The Vatican takes that edit and the final product goes out simultaneously via the broadcaster and Vatican media.

The civil union comments caused a firestorm, thrilling progressives and alarming conservatives, given that official Vatican teaching prohibits any such endorsement of homosexual unions.

Pope: The Church, world need Mary’s motherhood and womanhood
24 October 2020, 12:36

Pope Francis on Saturday met the students and staff Rome’s Pontifical Theological Faculty "Marianum" and shared with them a reflection on Mary’s motherhood and womanhood.
By Vatican News staff writer

According to Pope Francis, Mary is the model of mother and woman.  Her her school is one of faith and life, and she teaches well the alphabet of human and Christian life.

The Pope made the comment to some 200 students and professors of the Pontifical Theological Faculty "Marianum" of Rome, run by the Order of Servants of Mary (The Servites).  This prestigious academic institution on Mariology also publishes Marianum, a well-known journal on Marian theology.

By going to the heart of her mystery, the Pope said, we can discover the wonders of her motherhood and her womanhood. Elizabeth recognized her as “mother of the Lord”, the Pope said, and Jesus wanted us to walk in life with the best of mothers.

Fiasco over pope’s cut civil union quote intensifies impact

ROME — The world premiere of a documentary on Pope Francis was supposed to have been a bright spot for a papacy locked down by a pandemic and besieged by a corruption scandal, recalling Francis’ glory days traveling the world to bless the oppressed.

But the red carpet rollout of “Francesco” has been anything but bright, with evidence that the Vatican censored the pope last year by deleting his endorsement of same-sex civil unions from an interview, only to have the footage resurface in the new film.

Aside from the firestorm the remarks created, the “Francesco” fiasco has highlighted the Vatican’s often self-inflicted communications wounds and Francis’ willingness to push his own agenda, even at the expense of fueling pushback from conservative Catholics.

That pushback was swift and came from predictable corners: Cardinal Raymond Burke, Francis’ frequent nemesis on matters of doctrine, said the pope’s comments were devoid of any “magisterial weight.” But in a statement, Burke expressed concern that such personal opinions coming from the pope “generate great bewilderment and cause confusion and error among Catholic faithful.”

The kerfuffle began Wednesday with the world premiere of “Francesco,” a feature-length film on Francis and the issues he cares most about: climate change, refugees and social inequality. Midway through, Francis delivers the bombshell quote that gays deserve to be part of the family and that he supported civil unions, or a “ley de convivencia civil” as he said in Spanish — to give them legal protections.

Analysis: How the Washington Post is Opening the Path to Use the Pope Against the Catholic Church

On Thursday, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro asked his country’s legislature to consider a same-sex marriage bill, citing the words of Pope Francis. In the developing world, Maduro will not be the last politician to use that approach.
Alejandro Bermudez/CNA  Vatican  October 24, 2020

ROME — Amid an international fracas over Pope Francis’ words on civil unions in a newly released documentary, the pope’s remarks have begun to be used to criticize Catholic organizations facing ongoing religious liberty challenges in the U.S. – despite the pope’s very public alignment with these organizations on the issues of same sex marriages and adoptions.

In Francesco, a documentary that premiered Wednesday, Pope Francis called for the passage of civil union laws, saying that homosexual couples need to be “covered” by the state.

The pope also affirmed that “homosexuals have a right to be a part of the family,” emphasizing that “nobody should be thrown out” of a family because of homosexuality, or “be made miserable.” Since the documentary’s release, those remarks have been proven to relate to children ostracized in their families because of their sexual orientation, while in the film they are presented absent this context, the result of heavy editing, with ambiguous implications.

The pope’s remarks have been distorted  to suggest a tacit endorsement of adoption by same-sex couples, something Pope Francis has actually consistently opposed during, and prior to, his pontificate.

The Supreme Court is set to hear Fulton v. City of Philadelphia on Nov. 4, a case that could impact faith-based adoption and foster care agencies affected by state and local non-discrimination ordinances around the country.

Pope Francis to create 13 new cardinals, including Washington Archbishop Gregory

Vatican City, Oct 25, 2020 / 06:00 am MT (CNA).- Pope Francis said Sunday that he will create 13 new cardinals, including Washington Archbishop Wilton Gregory, at a consistory on Nov. 28, the vigil of the First Sunday of Advent.

The pope announced his intention to add to the College of Cardinals from a window overlooking St. Peter’s Square, after leading the Angelus Oct. 25.

Gregory, who was appointed Archbishop of Washington in 2019, will become the first Black cardinal of the United States.

Cardinal-designate Gregory hit the headlines in June this year, when he strongly criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to the John Paul II Shrine in Washington, D.C., amid clashes between police and protesters.

“I find it baffling and reprehensible that any Catholic facility would allow itself to be so egregiously misused and manipulated in a fashion that violates our religious principles, which call us to defend the rights of all people even those with whom we might disagree,” he said.

“St. Pope John Paul II was an ardent defender of the rights and dignity of human beings. His legacy bears vivid witness to that truth. He certainly would not condone the use of tear gas and other deterrents to silence, scatter or intimidate them for a photo opportunity in front of a place of worship and peace,” he added.

It later emerged that Gregory had been aware of Trump’s visit to the shrine days before he had initially appeared to be.

During his Angelus address on Sunday, Pope Francis reflected on the Gospel of the Day in which a doctor of the Law asks Jesus which is "the great commandment".

Jesus responds by saying, “You will love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind" and "You will love your neighbour as yourself".

Pope extols book comparing Europe today to pre-Nazi Germany

ROSARIO, Argentina – Pope Francis broke tradition again on Saturday, delivering an eight-minute off-the-cuff speech to members of a visiting Spanish delegation against the dangers of ideologies in the midst of a grave economic crisis which, the pope said, could be worse than the Great Depression of 1929.

“Ideologies sectarianize, ideologies deconstruct the homeland, they do not build,” the pope said. “Let’s learn this from history.”

The 7-member delegation led by Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, included his wife, Begoña Gómez. Francis was seated at one end of the library of the Apostolic Palace with the delegation arranged to his sides, keeping the mandatory social distance but without masks.

Speaking in Spanish and quoting several poets, Francis’s speech was a sharp criticism of Spain and Europe, but also applies to other regions seeing a rise of nationalism, extreme ideologies and divisions combined with an economic crisis exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Update:  Pope Francis on civil unions in the documentary “Francesco."

https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/context-of-popes-civil-union-documentary-comment-reported-14270

Context of pope’s ‘civil union’ documentary comment reported

CNA Staff, Oct 24, 2020 / 04:42 pm MT (CNA).-  A fuller context of remarks from Pope Francis on civil unions in a recent documentary has emerged, while questions continue to surround the documentary, and the Vatican has not responded to requests for comment.

While filmmaker Evgeny Afineevsky told CNA and other journalists that Pope Francis made comments calling for the passage of civil union laws directly to him, it later emerged that the comments were actually part of a 2019 interview of Pope Francis conducted by Mexican journalist Valentina Alazraki.

It was subsequently revealed that several sentences spoken by the pope in the documentary were spliced together, out of context, from the 2019 interview, and journalists have since then asked questions about the precise nature of the pope’s remarks on civil unions.

The civil union remark was not contained in the published version of Alazraki’s interview, and has not been available to the public. But America Magazine published Oct. 24 the apparent context of the pope’s remark on civil unions.

During a discussion on the pope’s opposition to a same-sex marriage proposal when he was an archbishop in Argentina, Alazraki asked Pope Francis if he had adopted more liberal positions after becoming pope, and if so, whether that was attributable to the Holy Spirit.

Alazraki  asked: “You waged a whole battle over egalitarian weddings, of couples of the same sex in Argentina. And later they say that you arrived here, they elected you pope and you appeared much more liberal than what you were in Argentina. Do you recognize yourself in this description that some people who knew you before make, and was it the grace of the Holy Spirit that gave you a boost? (laughs)”

According to America Magazine, the pope responded that: “The grace of the Holy Spirit certainly exists. I have always defended the doctrine. And it is curious that in the law on homosexual marriage…. It is an incongruity to speak of homosexual marriage. But what we have to have is a law of civil union (ley de convivencia civil), so they have the right to be legally covered.”

The last sentence was omitted when Alazraki's interview was broadcast in 2019.

It is not clear when the pope said “I stood up for that,” or if that sentence references the remark on civil unions. The magazine also did not indicate how it had obtained the footage omitted from the publicly aired interview.

A CNA analysis found that comments from the pope presented in the documentary before his remarks on civil unions were heavily edited, with various phrases from the 2019 interview strung together as presented as a cohesive whole.

Pope Francis' Christmas liturgies to take place without public
By Hannah Brockhaus

Vatican City, Oct 26, 2020 / 11:13 am MT (CNA).- Pope Francis' Christmas liturgies at the Vatican will be offered without public participation this year, as countries continue to react to the coronavirus pandemic.

According to a letter seen by CNA which was sent by the Secretariat of State to embassies accredited to the Holy See, Pope Francis will celebrate the Vatican liturgies of the Christmas season "in a private form without the presence of members of the diplomatic Corps."

The letter, which was sent by the section for general affairs Oct. 22, said the liturgies will be streamed online. Diplomats accredited to the Holy See usually attend papal liturgies as special guests.

Popular movements meeting supported by Francis presents proposals for new economic system
Inés San Martín  Oct 26, 2020

ROSARIO, Argentina – On Saturday two of Pope Francis’s most trusted advisors took part in the latest edition of the World Meeting of Popular Movements, which has been supported by the pope since the early days of his pontificate.

The meeting brings together grassroots organizations from five continents working with the poor and marginalized, with the goal of letting them become the protagonists of their own stories.

Cardinal Peter Turkson, Prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for the Promotion of Integral Human Development, was one of the people addressing the meeting this year, held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“There are inequalities, lack of access to health, cruel economic systems, that is why the [COVID-19] virus exposes us to many other pandemics that must be dealt with,” he said.

Al these other pandemics, Turkson said, “all have one thing in common: They undermine human dignity.”

Turkson said that Pope Francis’s latest document, the encyclical Fratelli Tutti is an appropriate response to these deficiencies.

The World Meeting has gathered several times, the first time in Rome in 2014. Francis has taken part in some of them, including two in Rome and one in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia.

Vatican to discuss parish instructions with German bishops, not Synodal Way committee
By Courtney Mares

Rome Newsroom, Oct 26, 2020 / 08:00 am MT (CNA).- The Vatican has told the German Bishops’ Conference that a forthcoming meeting in Rome to discuss Germans’ concerns about the new instruction on parishes will not include laymen representing Germany’s “Synodal Way”.

A letter from Cardinal Beniamino Stella, Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy, to the president of the German Bishops’ Conference Bishop Georg Bätzing of Limburg was leaked to the press and later correspondence was confirmed by a spokesman for the bishops’ conference on Oct. 26.

Cardinal Stella’s letter was written in response to Bishop Bätzing’s proposal in August that the executive committee of the Synodal Way be included in a meeting at the Vatican “since bishops, priests, deacons and laity are equally addressed in the instruction.”

Stella replied: "In view of the fact that this instruction, because of its nature, is primarily addressed to the bishops (cf. can. 34 § 1 CIC), at this stage I consider them to be the necessary interlocutors of this Congregation,” according to the German media outlet, Herder Korrespondenz.

The cardinal made it clear that in preparation for his eight-page letter he had “spoken to the Holy Father on September 7, 2020 about an appropriate response to the German bishops.”

Update:  Pope Francis on civil unions in the documentary “Francesco."

Catholics Pray for Clarity in St. Peter’s Square After Pope Francis’ Civil Unions Remarks

The initiative comes in response to Pope Francis’ remarks, given in a new documentary, in which he gave his clearest support yet for civil union laws for same-sex couples.
Edward Pentin  Vatican  October 24, 2020

VATICAN CITY — A group of lay faithful and priests gathered in St. Peter’s Square this afternoon to ask Pope Francis to clarify his reported remarks on same-sex civil unions as media and politicians around the world interpret them as a significant change in Church teaching.

The group, led by Austrian layman Alexander Tschugguel who came to prominence last year after throwing the Pachamama statues into the Tiber during the Amazon Synod, gathered in the shadow of St. Peter’s basilica at about 5pm where they stood and knelt in silent prayer.

In front of them, next to the perimeter fence of the square, the participants held up a large banner that read: “Holy Father, we ask for clarity on same-sex civil unions” which Vatican authorities allowed to be displayed for 10 minutes before asking for it to be taken down.

It is rare that a large banner of this kind has been allowed to be displayed so close to the square and given such prominence.

Pope Francis dreams of a Europe of solidarity and respect for all peoples
27 October 2020, 12:00

In a letter to the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Pope Francis retraces the history and values of the European continent and expresses his desire for fraternity and solidarity among nations amid a period marked by individualistic tendencies.
By Vatican News staff writer

Pope Francis, in a letter to Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, shares his visions of a Europe of the future, marked with solidarity, friendship and unity, and true to the spirit of the continent’s founding fathers.

The Pope’s letter comes as the Holy See and the Church in Europe celebrate three anniversaries this year.

First, the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the then-European Community and the Holy See, by its presence as an ******* at the Council of Europe. Second, the founding of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Communities (COMECE), forty years ago. Third, this year also marks the seventieth anniversary of the Schuman Declaration which inspired the continent’s gradual process of reintegration after the two world wars.

In light of these notable occasions, Cardinal Parolin is to make significant visits to EU authorities, the Plenary Assembly of the COMECE and the authorities of the Council of Europe in the near future.

"The Economy of Francesco" giving a new soul to global economy
27 October 2020, 14:31

The “Economy of Francesco” event, that had been due to launch the movement in Assisi in March and that was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, is presented in the Vatican in an adapted guise.
By Linda Bordoni

The “Economy of Francesco” is a worldwide movement of young people who aim to change the current economic models and craft a future that is more inclusive and just.

It was convoked by Pope Francis in 2019 when he asked economists and young people to give life to the idea of a different kind of economy, one that is more attentive to the weakest members of society and is not focused exclusively on the gain of material wealth.

Following the postponement of its launch in 2019 due to the covid-19 health emergency, organizers have set up an online event to be held from 19 to 21 November 2020.

At the presentation on Tuesday morning in the Holy See Press Office, the “Economy of Francesco” was described as “a different economy, one that helps people live and does not kill, that includes and does not exclude, that humanizes rather than dehumanizes, that takes care of creation and does not plunder it.”

Pope Francis bestows pallium on new Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem
By Hannah Brockhaus

Vatican City, Oct 28, 2020 / 09:00 am MT (CNA).- Pope Francis on Wednesday bestowed the pallium on the newly appointed Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem.

The pope gave the pallium to Patriarch Pierbattista Pizzaballa Oct. 28 during morning Mass in the chapel of the Vatican’s Santa Marta residence.

Pallia are white woolen vestments adorned with six black silk crosses given to metropolitan archbishops. They symbolize the metropolitan bishop’s authority and unity with the Holy See.

Pizzaballa was named the new Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem by Pope Francis Oct. 24. The Italian archbishop had served as apostolic administrator of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem since 2016.

The appointment of the 55-year-old Franciscan friar ended a four-year wait for a new patriarch for the estimated 293,000 Latin Catholics in Israel, the Palestinian territories, Jordan, and Cyprus.
