Update: Meeting between Pope Francis and President Biden did not happen
By CNA Staff
Vatican City, Jun 14, 2021 / 16:55 pm

In a story June 14, 2021, about Joe Biden and Pope Francis, the Catholic News Agency, based on information provided by a source, erroneously reported that the U.S. President would meet with the pope on June 15. According to Vatican sources June 15, there is no meeting currently scheduled between Pope Francis and President Joe Biden.

A corrected version of the story is below:

President Joe Biden’s attendance at early morning Mass with Pope Francis was nixed from an early plan for the first meeting of both leaders, a reliable Vatican source told CNA.

President Biden is currently in Europe for several high level meetings, offering a potential opportunity to meet with Pope Francis. According to Vatican sources June 15, there is no meeting currently scheduled between the two men.

The President’s entourage had originally requested for Biden to attend Mass with the pope early in the morning, but the proposal was nixed by the Vatican after considering the impact that Biden receiving Holy Communion from the pope would have on the discussions the USCCB is planning to have during their meeting starting Wednesday, June 16.

The U.S. bishops are slated to vote on creating a committee that would draft a document about Eucharistic coherence.

Pope to political leaders: ‘Convert death into life, weapons into food'
15 June 2021, 12:45

Pope Francis sends a video-message to participants in the 16th edition of the GLOBSEC Bratislava Forum where political leaders and ministers are focusing on rebuilding the post-pandemic world.
By Linda Bordoni

The theme of the 2021 GLOBSEC Bratislava Forum is “Rebuild the World Back Better”. As Pope Francis notes at the start of his video-message to the gathering, it offers a platform for “the important debate on rebuilding our world after the experience of the pandemic, which forces us to confront a number of serious and all interrelated socio-economic, ecological and political issues.”

GLOBSEC, that takes place between 15 and 17 June, aims to provide a space and the possibility of setting foundations for the renewal and rebuilding of trust in democracy and institutions, economic growth and recovery, tech governance and security for the 21st century and resilience in health.

In his intervention, the Pope offers some insights, “taking inspiration from the trinomial method of seeing - judging - acting.”

Abrahamic Family House in Abu Dhabi to open in 2022
15 June 2021, 11:10

The cultural landmark in the UAE capital, which includes a synagogue, a church and a mosque, is meant to be a beacon of understanding and peaceful coexistence, inspired by the Document on Human Fraternity.
By Robin Gomes

The Abrahamic Family House, which encloses a synagogue, a church and a mosque in a single complex, and which is scheduled to be inaugurated in 2022, is 20 percent complete, the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity (HCHF) said in a statement on Tuesday.  The  Committee, which is also supervising the project , said it is inspired by the 2019 Document on Human Fraternity.  Constructed on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, the project is closely followed by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam Ahmed el-Tayeb of al-Azhar, who endorsed the design, the HCHF said.

The  Abrahamic Family House derives its name from the Old Testament biblical figure, Abraham, who is recognized and greatly revered by Jews, Christians and Muslims.

Pope at Audience: On the Cross, Jesus prayed for each of us
16 June 2021, 09:42

At the General Audience on Wednesday, Pope Francis concludes a long series of catechetical lessons on “prayer,” focusing on the priestly prayer of Jesus.
By Christopher Wells

As he concluded his catechetical cycle on prayer – which began over a year ago, in May 2020 – Pope Francis said “the most beautiful thing to remember” is “the grace that we do not only pray, but that, so to speak, we have been ‘prayed for,’ we have already been received in Jesus’s dialogue with the Father, in communion with the Holy Spirit.”

Prayer, the Pope said, “is one of the most evident features in Jesus’ life… because the dialogue with the Father was the incandescent core of His whole existence.”

Pope Francis appoints ‘ecclesiastical assistant’ for Vatican communications
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, Jun 16, 2021 / 09:00 am

Pope Francis on Wednesday appointed an Italian priest and philosopher as an “ecclesiastical assistant” to the Vatican’s communications department.

Forty-year-old Fr. Luigi Maria Epicoco, from the southern Italian region of Puglia, is the author of more than 20 books and a frequent radio and television guest.

He also speaks at conferences and leads retreats throughout Italy.

With his new role in Vatican communications, Epicoco will also be a columnist for the Vatican newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano.

During his annual Christmas speech in December 2019, Pope Francis gifted Epicoco’s book, “Someone to Look To: For a Spirituality of Witness,” to members of the Roman Curia.

An interview...

Pope names ecclesiastical assistant for Dicastery for Communication
17 June 2021, 11:24

Pope Francis names Fr Luigi Maria Epicoco, from the Archdiocese of L’Aquila, Italy, as ecclesiastical assistant for the Dicastery for Communication and editorialist for L’Osservatore Romano. In an interview with Vatican News, Fr Epicoco describes communication as a channel for communion.
By Fabio Colagrande

On the day of his Christmas greetings to the Roman Curia in 2019, Pope Francis chose a book by Father Luigi Maria Epicoco as a gift for the Cardinals. On Wednesday, Pope Francis named the young priest as ecclesiastical assistant of the Dicastery for Communication and columnist of L'Osservatore Romano, in view of his distinguished editorial commitment and his work more generally as a communicator.

Father Epicoco has been a priest since 2005, ordained by the then-Archbishop of L'Aquila, Giuseppe Molinari. As a young priest, he lived through the earthquake that shook his adopted city on 6 April 2009, when as chaplain to university students he experienced the tragedy of seeing eight young people in the Casa dello Studente buried under the rubble.

Originally from Brindisi, Fr Epicoco, is the author of numerous books on religious topics. He currently holds a chair in philosophy at the Lateran University; and in 2019, the Cardinal Vicar of Rome, Angelo De Donatis, appointed him Dean of the Higher Institute of Religious Sciences Fides et Ratio Issr in L'Aquila.

In this interview with Vatican media, Fr Luigi Epicoco speaks of the need to make communion possible through communication, and to understand the role of a journalist as a “bridge-builder.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A decade-long series of retranslating and approving liturgical texts is nearing its end, but isn’t quite there yet.

During the first day of their June 16-18 virtual spring assembly, the U.S. Latin-rite bishops were asked to approve three additional sets of texts from the International Committee on English in the Liturgy, or ICEL.

These sets are on Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church; additional intercessions and psalter concluding prayers for the Liturgy of the Hours; and the Order of Penance.

18 June 2021, 13:47

Pope Francis may continue to make changes in the Roman Curia
By Andrea Gagliarducci
Vatican City, Jun 18, 2021 / 10:19 am

As the completion of curia reform approaches, Pope Francis would be moving towards some changes. The pope's next moves might be the appointment of a new Master of Ceremonies and the appointment of a president for the Committee to prepare the Jubilee 2025

Msgr. Guido Marini has been the Papal Master of Ceremonies since 2007. Called to the position by Benedict XVI and well known for his rather traditional approach to liturgy, Mons. Marini was able to cooperate with Pope Francis, even if sometimes their views on liturgy differed. According to sources speaking to CNA, Monsignor Marini would be appointed a bishop in Italy.

Marini's replacement, according to the sources, should not be interpreted as a punishment. It is, instead, a clue that Pope Francis wants no “permanent” positions in the curia.

The pope might send Marini to Tortona, a diocese near Liguria, Marini's birthplace. The diocese is vacant since the Pope picked its bishop as secretary of the Congregation for the Divine Worship and the Discipline of Sacraments.

There are three candidates to replace Marini as Master of Ceremonies, according to the sources. One is Fr. Giuseppe Midili, director of the Liturgical Office of Rome's Vicariate. The second is Msgr. Diego Ravelli, already one of the Papal Master of Ceremonies; and finally Msgr. Pietro Moroni, Dean of the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical Urbanian University and consultor of the Office for the Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff.

Meanwhile, curia reform continues to be under discussion. Originally scheduled to be announced by the end of June, the draft reform should come out next autumn, according to a cardinal who spoke with CNA.

Meeting virtually for their annual spring general assembly, the U.S. bishops voted on Thursday to begin drafting “a formal statement on the meaning of the Eucharist in the life of the Church.” The vote took place after extensive and, at times, spirited debate on Wednesday and Thursday, with some bishops opposing the move to begin drafting the document.

The measure passed by a vote of 168 to 55, with six abstentions. A simple majority was required for passage of the action item. The U.S. bishops’ doctrine committee will now lead the process of drafting the document, with input from other conference committees. A draft of the document could be ready to be debated, amended, and voted on by the bishops at their November meeting - which is currently planned to be held in-person in Baltimore, Maryland.

Results of voting for the various action items of the spring meeting were announced on Friday afternoon, on the third and final day of the meeting. The bishops also authorized the development of a statement on Native American ministry, approved several liturgical translations, and approved a pastoral statement on marriage ministry.

Pope: "Deacons are the guardians of service in the Church"
19 June 2021, 12:53

Pope Francis on Saturday met a group of permanent deacons from Rome Diocese and spoke to them about their role, which he said is not a substitution for a priest or a bishop.
By Robin Gomes

“The generosity of a deacon who spends himself without seeking the front lines smells of the Gospel and tells of the greatness of God's humility that takes the first step to meet even those who have turned their backs on Him.” This is how Pope Francis envisages the role of a permanent deacon among the People of God in the Church. He made the comment on Saturday during a meeting with some 500 people, including permanent deacons from his Diocese of Rome, along with their families.

In the Catholic Church, the diaconate is the first of three ranks in ordained ministry – bishops, priests and deacons. Since the Second Vatican Council, the Latin-rite Church has restored the diaconate “as a proper and permanent rank of the hierarchy”.  Deacons preparing for the priesthood are transitional deacons, while those not planning to be ordained priests are permanent deacons. Permanent diaconate can be conferred on a single or married man.  If he is married, he must be so before receiving the diaconate.

Robert Schuman, father of European unity, on path to sainthood
19 June 2021, 13:48

Pope Francis has authorized the promulgation of a Decree advancing the causes for canonization of European statesman Robert Schuman, as well as ten Polish nuns martyred by Soviet troops at the end of World War II. The heroic virtues of a number of other holy men and women were also officially recognized.
By Vatican News

The Church has recognised the heroic virtues of Robert Schuman, one of the founding fathers of European unity, thus according him the title “Venerable.”

At an audience for the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Pope Francis authorized the dicastery to promulgate the Decree advancing his cause, along with the causes of four other Venerables and eleven future Blesseds, including ten martyred Polish nuns, who were killed in odium Fidei (in hatred of the Faith) in Poland in 1945 during the invasion of Soviet troops.

US Bishops vote in favor of drafting document on Eucharist
19 June 2021, 12:36

The US Bishops meeting at their spring general assembly approve a plan to draft a text focusing on the meaning of the Eucharist in the life of the church. The vote in favor of the document came on the last day of their three-day gathering, which focused on a range of issues regarding the life of the Church.
By Vatican News staff writer

Bishops from the United Sates met online for their annual spring General Assembly from June 16-18. During their final day of deliberations on Friday, the top issue on the agenda included a vote for a plan to draft a document looking at the meaning of the Eucharist in the life of the Church. The action in favor of the idea passed with 168 votes in favor, 55 against and six abstentions. The vote in favor means the episcopal Committee on Doctrine can begin begin work on the document and present a draft to discuss at their next meeting in November.

Lively debate marked the discussions preceding the vote, with many seeing it as a necessary teaching document at this time and others worried it might become an instrument that could result in furthering challenges to unity among Catholics in the United States, especially if applied in ways that might appear political. Those in favor noted that the document would work well with the existing multi-year National Eucharistic Revival initiative that is part of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB)’ 2021-2024 strategic plan entitled, “Created Anew by the Body and Blood of Christ: Source of Our Healing and Hope.” Cardinal Wilton Gregory of Washington, instead noted that adopting a document at a time when there are divisions of viewpoint among the bishops would further threaten the unity of the USCCB and the church overall, recommending more internal dialogue among them and with the faithful before moving forward on it.

Pope at Angelus: Have faith and never tire seeking the Lord
20 June 2021, 12:13

Reflecting on Sunday's Gospel passage about the storm calmed by Jesus, Pope Francis likens the waves and wind to the trials of our daily lives and encourages us to "ask for the grace of a faith that never tires of seeking the Lord." He assures us the Lord is always there by our side waiting for us.
By Vatican News staff writer

Pope Francis focused his reflections on the Sunday Gospel episode recounting when Jesus calmed the high winds and waves threatening the boat crossing with His disciples. The alarmed disciples awakened Jesus, who was asleep in the stern, to ask Him to help them.

The Pope likened the disciples’ experience of fear and bewilderment to the trials of our own lives, when we too cry out to the Lord, asking why He seems to be silent and not doing anything. Sometimes we feel we might be sinking when dealing with unemployment or health problems or at the mercy of unrelenting waves of anxiety with no safe harbor in sight, the Pope observed. At times we “risk losing sight of the most important thing”: that “Jesus is there, and He shares with His own all that is happening”, even if He is sleeping or seems out of sight. This is something that surprises us, but also tests our faith. The Pope said the Lord is always there and “waits for us to engage Him, to invoke Him, to put Him at the centre of what we are experiencing”; and we must not only believe in God, but be present to Him and even “raise our voice with Him, cry out to Him”. He recalled the tragic images we have seen of migrants struggling at sea crying out for help to be saved, a prayer to God.

Cardinal Tobin appointed member of Vatican’s highest court
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, Jun 21, 2021 / 09:00 am

Pope Francis on Monday appointed 12 new members of the Vatican’s highest court, the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, including Cardinal Joseph Tobin of Newark.

American Cardinal James Harvey, archpriest of the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, and Bishop Mark Bartchak of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, Pennsylvania, were also named members of the court.

The Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura is one of three courts within the Holy See, and functions as a sort of Supreme Court, hearing appeals coming from the two other tribunals.

The court’s new members were appointed for a term of five years.

Other new cardinal members are German Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Muller, prefect emeritus of the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, and Cardinal Mario Grech, secretary general of the Synod of Bishops.

Statement by UN ‘experts’ seeks to discredit the Holy See
By Andrea Gagliarducci
Rome Newsroom, Jun 20, 2021 / 14:35 pm

A group of U.N. “experts” is expected to issue a statement aimed at forcing the Holy See and the Catholic Church to surrender to abortion and gender ideology, under the guise of demanding that the Vatican takes all necessary steps to prevent abuse.

With the Human Rights Council’s latest session due to begin on June 21, experts from the U.N., including several special rapporteurs, are poised to publish a statement urging the Holy See to introduce all necessary measures to prevent sex abuse.

The statement, which goes beyond the capacities of the U.N. experts, has the hallmarks of an attempt to undermine Catholic doctrine by using the sex abuse scandals.

Argentine Bishop Zanchetta ends Vatican job at APSA
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, Jun 22, 2021 / 03:35 am

Bishop Gustavo Zanchetta is no longer working as an assessor at the Vatican’s Administration of the Patrimony of the Holy See (APSA).

According to a source working at APSA, the Argentine bishop finished his service at the Vatican’s central reserve bank around 10 or more days ago.

The source did not know where Zanchetta is now, but speculated that he may be in Argentina, where he is facing charges of sexual and financial misconduct.

CNA requested comment from the Holy See press office but, at the time of publication, had not received a response.
