Pope at Angelus: Jesus heals our hearts wounded from lack of love
27 June 2021, 12:11

At the Angelus address on Sunday, Pope Francis recalls that Jesus goes beyond our sins and prejudices to heal our heart from the wounds and mistakes of the past.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis prayed the Angelus on Sunday with pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square, and reflected on the day’s Gospel (Mk 5:21-42).

The Pope said Jesus encounters two dramatic situations in this passage, which speak to us about death and disease.

“Jesus lets Himself be touched by our suffering and our death,” he said, “and He works two signs of healing to tell us that neither suffering nor death have the last word.”

Pope to Ecumenical Delegation: We are called on to distinguish, discern and sift
28 June 2021, 11:30

Pope Francis meets with a delegation of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew and speaks of the importance of Christian communion as an example as we seek global communion after the pandemic.
By Francesca Merlo

Addressing the delegation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in the Vatican on Monday, Pope Francis noted that “this annual exchange of delegations between the Church of Rome and that of Constantinople” for the feasts of Saints Peter and Paul, “is a sign of the communion – real, albeit not yet full – which we already share”.

Traditional exchange of delegations

A communiqué by the Holy See Press Office explained that in accordance with the traditional exchange of delegations between Rome and Istanbul, the delegation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate led by Metropolitan Emmanuel of Chalcedon arrived in Rome on Sunday. It noted that he is accompanied by Bishop Iosif, the Greek Orthodox Metropolitan of Buenos Aires, and by  Deacon Barnabas Grigoriadis.

The exchange takes place annually marking the respective feasts of their Patron Saints: 29 June for the celebration of Rome's Saints Peter and Paul; and 30 November for the celebration of Istanbul's St. Andrew.

The communiqué added that the delegation was received in audience by the Holy Father and, subsequently, met with the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity. Tomorrow,  Tuesday, 29 June, it will attend the Solemn Eucharistic Celebration presided over by Pope Francis in St. Peter's Basilica

Pope at Audience: God transforms our sinful lives to make us missionaries
30 June 2021, 09:43

At the weekly General Audience, Pope Francis reflects on the Letter of St. Paul to the Galatians, and says God’s grace turned sinful Saul into the Apostle to the Gentiles.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis held the Wednesday General Audience in the San Damaso Courtyard, and continued his catechesis on the letters of St. Paul.

The Pope focused his reflections on the Letter to the Galatians and on Paul’s self-identification as a true apostle.

He noted that Paul lays out his intent clearly, which is to “reiterate the novelty of the Gospel, which the Galatians have received through his preaching, to build the true identity on which to base their existence.”

30 June 2021, 14:24

Pope Francis congratulates the staff of L’Osservatore Romano, as the Vatican’s newspaper celebrates 160 years of service to the Popes and the Holy See.
By Devin Watkins

“I read it every day and when it doesn't come out on Sundays, I feel I am missing something.”

With these encouraging words, Pope Francis began his message to the L'Osservatore Romano newspaper on Wednesday.

As the Vatican’s newspaper marks its 160th anniversary, the Pope recounted his long-standing readership of the paper.

He said that he would faithfully read the weekly Spanish-language edition even when he was in Argentina.

“I read it all,” said the Pope, “because I know that it is a link with the Holy See, with the Magisterium of the Church, with the life of the Church, and with the history of the Church.”

Pope to meet with delegation of Indigenous People of Canada
30 June 2021, 12:16

The visit of the delegation of Indigenous people is scheduled between 17 and 20 December 2021. The Bishops of Canada express hope the meeting with the Pope will lead to a shared future of peace and harmony between Indigenous Peoples and the Catholic Church in Canada.
By Vatican News staff writer

In a statement on Tuesday,  the Bishops of Canada said that a delegation of Indigenous People is scheduled to meet with the Holy Father from 17 to 20 December 2021, “to foster meaningful encounters of dialogue and healing.”

This announcement comes after a 10 June statement from the Bishops in which they expressed their commitment to engage wholeheartedly with the past and to “take truly meaningful active steps together with Indigenous Peoples in view of a future filled with greater respect and cooperation.”

“The recent discovery of children’s remains at a burial site of a former residential school in Kamloops, British Columbia, remind us of a tragic legacy still felt today,” the Bishops said.

Therefore, in conversation with indigenous people and communities, both at the local and national levels, and bilaterally with the First Nations, Métis and Inuit national organizations, the Bishops, the sponsors of the initiative, are preparing a delegation to meet with the Pope.

Pope’s prayer intention for July: Social friendship
30 June 2021, 14:30

In his video message on the prayer intention for July 2021, Pope Francis urges “that in social, economic and political situations of conflict, we may be courageous and passionate architects of dialogue and friendship”, against polarization and populism.
By Robin Gomes

In his video message in Spanish, Pope Francis focuses on dialogue as the “path to seeing reality in a new way, so we can live with passion the challenges we face in constructing the common good.”  He calls for an end to polarization that divides us, and urges prayers that there be no space for “enmity or war”.

The Pope Video has just been released with the intention that Pope Francis is entrusting to the entire Catholic Church through the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network.

In the month of July, the Holy Father calls on all to become “architects of dialogue and friendship” to solve the conflicts and causes of division that exist in society and among individual people. Only through dialogue, he says, is it possible to avoid the constant polarization and social enmity that destroy so many relationships.

The Holy Father asks that we pray to construct the common good with men and women who extend a hand to each other, and especially to always be at the side of the “most impoverished and vulnerable, those on the peripheries”.

The assistance provided to the Lipa refugee camp is intended as a humanitarian intervention to give dignity to those living there. The Nuncio to Bosnia-Herzegovina, Archbishop Luigi Pezzuto, spoke about this outreach to Vatican News and the initiatives being promoted to assist those in the camp with the donation of Pope Francis. The funds are being allocated for the construction of two multi-purpose rooms and dining rooms for families and minors living at the permanent camp of Lipa. On Thursday morning a ceremony took place to mark the laying of the foundation stone, with the presence of the Nuncio. The diocesan Caritas of Banja Luka, Caritas Milan and the NGO Ipsia have also contributed to the construction and management of the structures.

International Day of Human Fraternity
The award-winning campaign was created for the first-ever International Day for Human Fraternity which took place on 4 February 2021.

The International Day was declared by the United Nations following the Document of Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together signed exactly two years earlier by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmad Al-Tayyeb during the Holy Father’s Apostolic Journey to the United Arab Emirates. The meeting inspired Pope Francis to write his third Encyclical, Fratelli tutti.
