Ten charged as Vatican ends London property investigation
03 July 2021, 12:10

Brülhart, Msgr Carlino, Crasso, Di Ruzza, Marogna, Mincione, Squillace, Tirabassi, Torzi, and Cardinal Becciu will be brought to trial following investigations into London property deal.
By Vatican News

The long and complex investigation carried out by Promoter of Justice Gian Piero Milano, Adjunct Alessandro Diddi and by clerk Gianluca Perrone is the result of an inquiry undertaken by the Vatican Gendarmeria led by Commander Gianluca Gauzzi Broccoletti. The probe led to the examination of an enormous number of documents, electronic equipment sequestered from the suspects, as well as the comparison of witness testimony. The president of Vatican City State’s Tribunal, Giuseppe Pignatone, has ordered the subpoena of ten people after receiving the request presented by the Office of the Promoter of Justice, says the Holy See Press Office’s statement. The first phase of the investigation ends with this summons. Now the documentation gathered will be examined by the Tribunal during the public debate involving both the prosecution and the defense. The first hearing is scheduled for 27 July.

Pachamama image used as monstrance in Mexican parish
By David Ramos
Guadalajara, Mexico, Jul 3, 2021 / 06:01 am

The “pachamama” or “mother earth” image which accompanied various activities during the 2019 Amazon Synod in Rome was recently used as a monstrance in a church in Mexico.

Pictures posted by Fr. José Luis González Santoscoy on  Facebook and later deleted, show the monstrance in the shape of the pachamama, a naked pregnant woman, carrying the Eucharist in her womb.

The photos were taken inside St. John Macías parish in Zapopan, immediately west of Guadalajara.

Contacted by ACI Prensa, CNA’s Spanish language news partner, Fr. González said, "I have absolutely no comment," adding that "the issue has already been discussed with my bishop, with my authorities."

The Archdiocese of Guadalajara has not issued a statement on the incident.

Pachamama is a deity of the Andes. During the 2019 Amazon Synod it was presented as if it belonged to the Amazonian cosmovision.

On October 4, 2019, at an event organized in the Vatican Gardens by the Panamazonian Ecclesiastical Network (REPAM) along with the Catholic Movement for Climate, some of the attendees performed an indigenous ritual which included two nude female figures carved in wood, which a few days later were identified as pachamamas.

They had been also described as representing “Our Lady of the Amazon,” and some journalists initially suggested they represented the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The images were later set up and displayed on an altar in the Carmelite church of Santa Maria in Traspontina.

On Oct. 21 two men stole at least five wooden carvings of the pachamama from the Santa Maria church and threw them into the Tiber.

The images were subsequently retrieved by the Italian police and Pope Francis later apologized for the incident, stating the images were used “without idolatrous intentions.”

In November 2019, the bishop emeritus of Marajó, José Luis Azcona, denounced the “idolatry” and the “scandal” surrounding the controversial pachamama images which were present at events of the Amazon Synod.

That same month, Fr. Hugo Valdemar, canon penitentiary of the Archdiocese of Mexico, as an act of reparation, burned several paper replicas of the pachamama image while a person standing next to the priest held up an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Pope at Angelus: Open your eyes to God’s humble presence
04 July 2021, 12:15

Pope Francis calls on us to keep our eyes and hearts free of prejudice and closed mindedness that comes from habit. Be open to being amazed at God’s surprises, he says, and God’s “humble and hidden presence in daily life”.
By Vatican News staff writer

Before leading the recitation of the Angelus, Pope Francis offered reflections on the Sunday Gospel reading which recounts when Jesus began to teach in the synagogue of his home town of Nazareth and the reaction of those present who questioned how he could have such wisdom coming from a humble family, the son of a carpenter. Their reaction was one of disbelief and resentment to which Jesus responded: “A prophet is not without honour, except in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house” (Mk 6:4).

By Hannah Brockhaus
Rome, Italy, Jul 4, 2021 / 08:12 am

Pope Francis has “reacted well” to a surgery he underwent at a Rome hospital Sunday to relieve stricture of the colon caused by diverticulitis, the Holy See Press Office stated.

A statement from the Holy See Press Office director, Matteo Bruni, sent at 11:42 p.m. Rome time, said the evening operation was carried out under general anesthesia.

An earlier Vatican statement had said the pope was taken to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital in the afternoon July 4 for the scheduled operation, which was to be performed by Dr. Sergio Alfieri. Three other surgeons assisted and three physicians administered the anesthetic.

Two other doctors, including the pope’s personal physician, were also present in the surgical suite. No information was given about how long Pope Francis will be in recovery.

Pope calls on Syro-Malabar Bishops to “walk together”
06 July 2021, 12:08

Pope Francis urges members of the Syro-Malabar Church to implement the uniform mode of celebrating the Holy "Qurbana", for the greater good and unity of their Church.
By Vatican Radio staff writer

Pope Francis has written a letter to the bishops, clergy, religious and laity of the Syro-Malabar Church inviting them “to proceed to a prompt implementation of the uniform mode of celebrating the Holy Qurbana, for the greater good and unity" of their Church.

The Syro-Malabar is an Oriental Catholic Major Archepiscopal Church based in Kerala, India.  Holy Mass, which is called Holy Qurbana in East Syriac Aramaic and means 'Eucharist', is celebrated in its solemn form on Sundays and special occasions.

In his letter dated 3 July, the Pope recalls the agreement unanimously reached by the Synod of Bishops of the Syro-Malabar Church in 1999 “and repeatedly endorsed in subsequent years – for a uniform mode of celebrating the Holy Qurbana, considering this an important step towards increasing stability and ecclesial communion within the whole body of the Church.”

He concluded his letter assuring all of his closeness in prayer and invoking the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Holy Patriarch Saint Joseph and the Apostle Saint Thomas.

Pope recovering normally, shows closeness to hospitalized children

Pope Francis is convalescing normally on Thursday, 4 days after he underwent intestine surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.
Vatican News staff writer

Pope Francis is recovering well after intestinal surgery he underwent on Sunday at Rome's Gemelli Hospital, Matteo Bruni, the director of the Holy See Press office, said in his update on the Pope on Thursday.  It was a “quiet day for the Pope” and his chest-abdomen CT scan was negative

“His Holiness Pope Francis spent a quiet day, eating and moving around independently on his own,” Bruni said.  “In the afternoon he wanted to show his paternal closeness to the little patients of the nearby Pediatric Oncology and Child Neurosurgery ward, sending them his affectionate greeting."

However, Bruni said that the Pope had a slight fever Wednesday evening.  Thursday morning, the Holy Father  "underwent routine microbiological tests and a chest-abdomen CT scan, which was negative".

The director of the Holy See Press Office said, “The Holy Father continues the planned treatments and oral feeding.” “At this particular moment, he turns his gaze to those who suffer, expressing his closeness to the sick, especially to those most in need of care," Bruni added.

Pope Francis names Jesuit cardinal to key synod on synodality position
By CNA Staff
Vatican City, Jul 8, 2021 / 06:00 am

Pope Francis on Thursday named the Jesuit Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich as the relator general of the 2023 synod on synodality.

Hollerich, the president of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE), will help to oversee the gathering of the world’s bishops in Rome.

The 62-year-old cardinal has served as archbishop of Luxembourg since 2011. His archdiocese covers the whole Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, one of Europe’s smallest countries, bordering Belgium, France, and Germany.

He thanked Pope Francis for the new appointment on July 8 via his Twitter account.

As relator general, Hollerich will take part in the meetings of the Ordinary Council of Preparation for the upcoming synod, formally known as the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops.

Hollerich will be expected to present a report at the start of the assembly in October 2023, introducing the theme of synodality. He will also outline the synod’s working document and the points that participants are due to discuss.

He will also preside over the preparation of the synod’s final document, which is submitted to participants for approval.

Pope recovering normally; Sunday ‘Angelus’ from hospital
09 July 2021, 12:25

Following his July 4 surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, Pope Francis on Thursday resumed work and celebrated Mass with those who assist him.
Vatican News staff reporter

Pope Francis “spent a quiet day”, Thursday, with “normal clinical progress”. “He continued to eat regularly and continued his scheduled treatment,” Matteo Bruni, the director of the Holy See Press Office, said in a brief statement on Friday.

The Holy Father is recovering normally after a scheduled surgery for “diverticular stenosis of the colon” on Sunday at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

In his update on the Pope’s convalescence, Bruni said he “walked in the corridor and resumed his work, alternating it with moments of reading texts”.  Thursday afternoon, “he celebrated Holy Mass in the chapel of his private apartment” in the hospital, “attended by all those assisting him during his hospitalization”.

Following a slight increase in temperature the previous evening, the Holy Father did not have any more fever.

Bruni said that on Sunday, the Pope would recite the Angelus prayer from the 10th floor of the hospital.  “The Holy Father gives thanks for the many messages of affection and closeness that he receives daily and asks that we continue to pray for him,” he added.

Pope and Anglican leaders: More needs to be done for South Sudan
09 July 2021, 11:37

Pope Francis, Justin Welby and Jim Wallace send a joint message to the political leaders of South Sudan encouraging them to do more to shape a nation “in which the dignity of all is respected and all are reconciled.”
By Linda Bordoni

Marking the 10th anniversary of the Independence of South Sudan, Pope Francis and leaders of the Churches of England and of Scotland – Justin Welby and Jim Wallace – reach out to the leaders of the world’s youngest nation with an appeal to do more for the good of their people.

In their letter, the Holy Father, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Moderator of the Church of Scotland, note the sad predicament of South Sudanese whom, they say, “continue to live in fear and uncertainty, and lack confidence” that their nation can indeed deliver the ‘justice, liberty and prosperity’ celebrated in their national anthem.

The Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, issued a statement on Saturday with the daily medical update on how Pope Francis is doing. In his statement he notes that “Pope Francis’ day was calm, with the expected clinical progress. His blood tests are satisfactory and he is continuing the prescribed treatment.”
The Pope is “gradually resuming work and continues to stroll in the corridor of the apartment. In the afternoon, he celebrated Holy Mass in the private chapel and in the evening he dined with those who are assisting him during these days.”

The statement concludes noting that “The Holy Father, experiencing first-hand the human dedication of the medical and health personnel assisting him, has addressed a special thought to all those who with care and compassion choose the face of suffering, engaging in a personal relationship with the sick, especially the most fragile and vulnerable.”

Pope Francis gave his familiar “Buongiorno!” greetings from the hospital on Sunday, just one week after undergoing intestinal surgery from which he is still recuperating at Rome's Gemelli Hospital. From the balcony of a 10th floor window overlooking the crowds below, he appeared with children who are being cared for there and recalled the need for our prayers and support for them.

The Pope expressed his joy at being able to keep the weekly Sunday Angelus appointment today and noted his profound gratitude to all, saying “I have deeply felt your closeness and the support of your prayers. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!”
