WYD: Pope points to vital role of grandparents in passing on faith

(Vatican Radio) The vital role of grandparents in passing on the faith through their families: echoing a theme that he spoke of during the flight over to Brazil, Pope Francis on Friday stressed the essential dialogue between the youngest and oldest members of society…

Speaking at the recitation of the Angelus prayer to crowds gathered outside the Archdiocesan house in Rio de Janeiro, the Pope noted that the Church today marks the feast of Jesus’ grandparents, Saints Joachim and Anne, father and mother of the Virgin Mary. As she grew up with them, the Pope said, she was surrounded by their love and faith, learning to listen to the Lord and to follow his will. Saints Joachim and Anne, the Pope said, were part of a long chain of people who had transmitted their love for God down to Mary, who received the Son of God in her womb and gave him to the world, to us.

How precious is the family as the privileged place for transmitting the faith, the Pope stressed, noting that Grandparents Day is also being celebrated in countries around the world. The Aparecida Document, he recalled, underlines the vital link between children and the elderly who build the future of society together: children, because they lead history forward, the elderly, because they transmit the experience and wisdom of their lives.

How important it is, Pope Francis exclaimed, in the context of this World Youth Day to acknowledge and honour grandparents, and to have intergenerational dialogue, especially within the context of the family.

WYD in Rio: What Brazil's papers are saying on Friday

(Vatican Radio) Our correspondent in Rio, Sean Patrick Lovett, takes a look at what Brazil's papers had to say in their Friday editions about the ongoing World Youth Day events.
Listen to Sean's report whose full text is below: RealAudioMP3

"Remember, you heard it first on Vatican Radio. The news of the day here in Rio is the same as that which you read on our website and FB page last night. All the daily papers are filled with their version of why the venue was changed from Guaratiba to Copacabana for the Vigil and closing WYD Mass.

O Globo blames it on a “lack of organization” (though, how WYD organizers could possibly have foreseen the disastrous effects of days of constant rainfall, is unclear). The paper illustrates its point by publishing a full front-page photograph of Guaratiba underwater and pursues the issue by demanding that the Rio Municipality reveal the cost of constructing – and demolishing – the venue. They fail to acknowledge that the same costs are being paid by the local Church and WYD organization. Addressing the story in a lighter vein, another article in the same paper is headlined: “Now all roads lead to Copacabana”.

Pope Francis: WYD Way of the Cross (full text)

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis prayed the Via crucis on Friday evening with pilgrims gathered for World Youth Day celebrations in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Nearly 300 artists and volunteers from several countries including the United States animated the popular devotion. The meditations accompanying each of the 14 stations depicting the principal episodes of Christ’s Passion, death and burial focused on a theme of particular significance in the life of contemporary youth, including: mission, conversion, community, and vocation; others involved pressing social challenges and existential issues such as suffering, illness and mortality. The texts of the meditations were prepared by a pair of Brazilian priests, Fr. José Zezinho and Fr. João Joãozinho, both of whom are well known in their native country for their work with young people.

In remarks to the pilgrims, Pope Francis spoke of the Cross of Christ as the source of hope, to which anyone and everyone can and ought to bring his deepest joys, sufferings and failures. The Holy Father also spoke of Christ’s Cross as a challenge to all of us: an invitation to allow ourselves to be smitten by his love, as well as a lesson and a reminder to us always to look upon others with mercy and tenderness – especially the suffering, and those we meet who are in distress and need help, whether in the form of a word of encouragement, or a concrete action that could take us beyond ourselves.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Thousands of people flooded Rio’s lush Copacabana beach on Friday for one of the most solemn ceremonies of the Catholic faith, a procession depicting the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

But, in keeping with the unlikely setting, the Way of the Cross procession came with a theatrical, florid twist.

With Pope Francis presiding, the event boasted massive stage sets, intricate lighting, a full orchestra and a cast of hundreds of performers straight out of a Broadway production. Francis watched in silence as the enthusiastic participants re-enacted the Biblical story.

The Way of the Cross is one of the centerpiece events of World Youth Day — and Francis was one of the main attractions.

Pope to clergy, religious, seminarians: respond to God’s call in 3 way

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis today urged clergy, seminarians and religious to respond to the call of God, proclaim the Gospel and promote a culture of encounter in their lives and ministry. In his homily at mass Saturday at Rio de Janeiro’s Cathedral of Saint Sebastian, the Pope cited these three aspects of their vocation as essential to evangelization. The Holy Father is in Brazil for a week long visit to celebrate World Youth Day with young people from around the world.
Tracey McClure reports on what the Pope had to say: RealAudioMP3

In order to do this effectively, first, they must rekindle “an awareness of their divine vocation” – something “we often take for granted in the midst of our many daily responsibilities.” We were called by God, he reminded them and we are called to live a life in Christ to be effective apostles.

And that takes “faithfulness to a life of prayer,” the daily Eucharist, and “helping those most in need.”

Far from isolating ourselves, we are called to proclaim the Gospel to others wherever they may be – he said, “even if that means in our own country.”

Let us help our young people, he said, to realize that being missionary is what it means to be Christian. And no effort should be spared in their formation.

The Pope challenged religious to look “courageously…to pastoral needs, beginning in the outskirts, with those farthest away… those who do not…go to church.”

While “the culture of exclusion, of rejection is spreading,” religious must promote “a culture of encounter.” He invited them to go against the tide in a society where the elderly and children are “unwanted” and “there is no time for that poor person on the edge of the Street.” Encounter and communion are marks of our Christian faith, he said, and we must be “obsessive” about living these out.

Below, we publish the full text of his homily:

Pope Francis: My advice is always “dialogue, dialogue, dialogue

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis met with leading members of Brazilian society on Saturday and stressed the importance of constructive dialogue, saying this was essential at the present moment. “Between selfish indifference and violent protest," he said, "there is always another possible option, that of dialogue.” The Pope also called for more inclusive and humanistic economic and political process, eliminating “forms of elitism” and eradicating poverty.

In his address to the political, diplomatic, cultural, religious, academic and business leaders of Brazil the Pope paid tribute to the country’s distinct cultural tradition, looked at their joint responsibility for building the future, and stressed the need for constructive dialogue in facing the present moment. He told the leaders that the future demands of us a humanistic vision of the economy and a politics capable of ensuring greater and more effective participation on the part of all. This, he continued, is the road that we are called to travel.

The Pope went on to say that anyone exercising a role of leadership needs to keep hope alive even in the face of disappointments, and be generous even without apparent results. He said leaders make decisions in the present but should always have an eye to the future, reflecting on the consequences of our decisions.

Pope Urges Clergy to Reach Out to the Poor
July 27, 2013

Pope Francis urged bishops Saturday to get out of their churches and bring the message of Catholicism to the world's poorest areas.

The Argentine-born pope addressed hundreds of bishops, priests and other clergy during a mass at the cathedral in Rio de Janeiro, telling them "we cannot keep ourselves shut up in parishes, in our communities, when so many people are waiting for the Gospel."

"It is not enough simply to open the door in welcome," the pope said, "but we must go out through that door and meet the people."

"Let us push the young people so they go out. Of course they are going to mess it up sometimes. We can't be afraid; the apostles did this (made mistakes) before us. We need to push them to go out. Let us courageously look to the pastoral needs of the outskirts, beginning with those who are farthest away, with those who do not usually go to church. They are the VIP guests. Go to the crossroads, go and find them,'' said Pope Francis.

Pope Francis urges dialogue to defuse Brazil protests

Pope Francis has told authorities and civil society leaders in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro to use dialogue as an alternative to "selfish indifference and violent protest".

The country has seen several violent demonstrations in the past month.

Earlier, the Pope challenged clergy to leave the comfort of their churches and reach out to the marginalised.

Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims are marching towards Rio's Copacabana beach for a 24-hour vigil later on Saturday.

The vigil will be opened by Pope Francis and is set to culminate on Sunday with a communal Mass, which also marks the end of the World Youth Day festival in Brazil.

Up to 1.5m young pilgrims are expected at Copacabana beach this weekend, following a last-minute change of venue due to floods in the area where the vigil was supposed to take place.

'Selfish indifference'

Before opening the vigil, on the penultimate day of his first major international trip, the Pope addressed civil leaders and government officials at Rio's Municipal Theatre.

"Between selfish indifference and violent protest there is always another possible option: that of dialogue,'' he told the audience in a reference to the demonstrations that have been rocking the country since June.

"A country grows when constructive dialogue occurs between its many rich cultural components: popular culture, university culture, youth culture, artistic and technological culture, economic culture, family culture and media culture.''

Pope Francis Puts On Indian Headdress From Pataxo Tribe After Speech
07/27/13 12:21 PM ET EDT

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Pope Francis has delighted a crowd in Rio de Janeiro by donning a colorful Indian headdress handed to him by a member of a Brazilian tribe.

It came after the pontiff spoke Saturday at Rio's Municipal Theater to an audience mostly made up of Brazil's political, business and cultural elite.

After the talk, he was greeted by well-wishers on stage, including a few Indians.

Pope to Rio Youth: Jesus Better Than World Cup
July 28, 2013

Pope Francis spoke the language of Brazil's soccer-mad youth Saturday, telling them that being a good Catholic is like training to play soccer. Only he added a seemingly blasphemous twist, telling them Jesus offers them "something more than the World Cup."

In the land of Pele that will host the World Cup in 2014, the joke might have gone over poorly coming from a pope from Argentina, Brazil's nemesis on the pitch.

But the crowd on Copacabana beach for the World Youth Day vigil cheered with delight.

"In order to enjoy soccer, you've got to have beer, you've got to have beautiful women and maybe drugs. How many beer cans do you see around here?" said Douglas Junior Segatini, a 35-year-old nurse from Sao Paulo state and "lifelong fan" of the Santos soccer team. "None, and that's because Christ is better than any alcohol, better than any drug, better than any match."

Pope Francis: WYD prayer vigil (full text)

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis joined over a million young people on Copacabana beach Saturday evening, for a prayer vigil on the eve of the final Mass marking World Youth Day, 2013 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The centerpiece of the vigil was a Eucharistic procession. The event featured litanies and hymns, as well as the testimonies of four different young people.

In his remarks to the youthful pilgrims, Pope Francis focused on the image of the field of faith – the name of the venue at which the vigil was originally to have taken place, before the week’s inclement weather rendered it unusable: the field as a place to sow seed and raise crops; the field as a place of training; the field as construction site.

The Holy Father also had words of encouragement for the many young people around the world – and especially in Brazil, who in recent days and weeks have taken to the streets to call for the betterment of their societies in a spirit of greater brotherhood. “I encourage them,” he said, “in an orderly, peaceful and responsible manner, motivated by the values of the Gospel, to continue overcoming apathy and offering a Christian response to social and political concerns present in their countries.”

Massive crowd in Brazil attends prayer service with pope

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (CNN)– A massive crowd packed Copacabana Beach late Saturday for a prayer service with Pope Francis.

The pope addressed Catholic pilgrims who came for the weeklong World Youth Day celebration.

Organizers said 3 million attended the service. They cited the mayor's office and police for the crowd estimates, which nearly doubled the 1.6 million who came here for a 2006 Rolling Stones concert and matched the 3 million who came for the 2000 millennium celebration.

CNN could not verify the estimate.

As he drove to the stage in the popemobile, Francis was pelted with T-shirts, banners and flags from the increasingly adoring crowds being held back by barricades on both sides of the street.

The pope told young people in attendance that they were the "protagonists of the future."

"In your young hearts, you have a desire to build a better world," Francis said. "I have been closely following the news reports of the many young people who throughout the world have taken to the streets in order to express their desire for a more just and fraternal society."

He said protesters should be motivated by the values of the Gospel and to overcome apathy with "a Christian response to the social and political concerns present in their countries."

The prayer vigil had been scheduled for a field 30 miles outside of the city at "Campus Fidei," or faith field, but organizers had to move events to Rio because of flooding.

"Today too, as always, the Lord needs you, young people, for his church," the pope said. "You are called to build a more beautiful church and a better world."
