You're welcome, seahorse!  It's good that the Vatican Radio site gives the latest news about Pope Francis and provides translated text, and full texts, of his speeches/messages/homilies, etc.

grace-land, Good Morning

Yes, It is good the Vatican keeps us in the loop, and T.Y. for forwarding the link & message.

I passed on the link to an aunt, she is going to participate on Saturday, and said T.Y.

I may omit sugar and sugar-related foods, on Saturday, that would be fasting (to me).

Looking forward to paricipating on Saturday, feels good just thinking about it.

Pope Francis: “words can kill”

(Vatican Radio) Where there is God there is no hatred, envy or jealousy, and there is no gossip that can kill.

This was the message at the heart of Pope Francis’ homily this morning as he celebrated Mass in the Casa Santa Marta after the summer break.

Listen to Linda Bordoni's report... RealAudioMP3

The Pope first reflected on today’s liturgical reading which tells of the meeting between Jesus and the people of Nazareth as recounted by the Gospel according to Luke.

The Pope noted that the people of Nazareth with whom he had grown up, admired Jesus, but at the same time expected great things from him: “they wanted a miracle” to be able to believe in Him. And when Jesus told them they were without faith, they were filled with fury, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill to hurl him down headlong”.

And Pope Francis reflected on the reading pointing out that a situation which had started off with admiration was to end with a crime: they wanted to kill Jesus. Because of jealousy and envy. This – he said – is not just something that happened two thousand years ago: “this kind of thing happens every day in our hearts, in our communities”. And he made the example of when somebody new enters a community, on the first day – he said - people speak well of him; on the second not so well; and from the third on gossip and badmouthing starts to spread and end up skinning him”.

Confession boom attributed to Pope Francis effect
3:11PM BST 02 Sep 2013

An informal survey of clergy based in cathedrals across England and Wales found that two thirds had noticed an upturn in numbers taking part in the sacrament, something many of them attributed to a papal “bounce”.

The Church said that the greater willingness by people to “unburden” themselves and deal “issues” than in the past had also given the centuries old practice a new relevance for some, including those who might be put off by public services.

The Rt Rev Kieran Conry, the Bishop of Arundel and Brighton, said a more informal approach to confession than in the past had also helped draw younger people – including increasing numbers who even attend with a smart phone in one hand, making use of a range of special confession apps to guide them through the process.

He joked that as a child he had been rather less diligent - even making up sins up to get through confession.

The polling of cathedral deans or priests-in-residence found that around a third had seen an increase which they attributed to a combination of the impact of the new Pope and the continuing impact of the Benedict XVI’s visit to Britain three years ago.

Argentina readies Pope Francis biopic (EXCLUSIVE)
September 2, 2013 | 01:37AM PT

One of its most international directors, Alejandro Agresti (“The Lake House”) will direct “Historia de un cura” (A Priest’s Tale), a biopic of Jorge Mario Bergoglio from his childhood through to election in March as the head of the Catholic Church.

Bergoglio became the first Jesuit pope, the first from the southern hemisphere and the first from North or Latin America.

Rodrigo de la Serna, who played memorably opposite Gael Gaecia Bernal in Walter Salles’ “The Motorcycle Diaries,” will limn Pope Francis.

“A Priest’s Tale” is set up at Argentina’s Pampa Films (“Chinese Take-Away”) and Spain’s Pentagrama (“Before the Fall”).

Pablo Bossi (“Nine Queens,” “Son of the Bride”), one of the architects of Argentina’s film renaissance, will produce with Pentagrama’s Jose Ibanez whose credits include Oliver Stone’s “Comandante” and Emir Kusturica’s “Maradona by Kusturica.”

An origins story told in flashbacks and flash-forwards as Bergoglio flies to Rome and attends the papal conclave after the res¡gnation of Pope Benedict XVI, “A Priest’s Tale’s” will focus on Bergoglio as a person, Agresti told Variety.

He added: “More than a rapid biopic of key events, I’m more concerned with getting inside this very singular person, his decision to follow his vocation, and how he combined his faith and reason, having studied as a Jesuit for 14 years before being ordained.”

The grandson of Italians who settled in Argentina, Agresti will also portray Bergoglio’s Italian immigrant family context, his work in Buenos Aires’ villa slums, and austerity and humility, the director said.

Shooting in Argentina, Italy and Germany, where Bergoglio studied, “A Priest Tale’s” budget will be “above-average” for Argentina, “Bossi told Variety.

Movie’s main languages will be Spanish and Italian. The producers aim to structure “A Priest’s Tale” as a co-production with Italy, Bossi added, saying that “A Priest’s Tale” is already semi-financed thanks to private investors

In Rome, Pope Francis asks WJC President Lauder to wish world Jewry 'Shana Tova'
02 September 2013

ROME – Pope Francis on Monday wished Jews around the world a sweet and peaceful year 5774, called for increased dialogue among the world’s religious communities and opposed fundamentalism in any faith. During his first private audience with an international Jewish leader since being elected Catholic pontiff in March, Francis asked World Jewish Congress (WJC) President Ronald S. Lauder to convey his New Year message to Jewish communities world-wide and said he also needed a sweet year because of the important decisions lying ahead. Using the Hebrew words for ‘Happy New Year’, Pope Francis wished a "Shana Tova" and asked the WJC to share that message with the Jewish people worldwide. Lauder presented the pope with a Kiddush cup and a honey cake.

At their meeting, which was held in an informal atmosphere at the Vatican, Lauder and the Catholic pontiff spoke about the situation in Syria and agreed to speak out against attacks on religious minorities, such as Coptic Christians in Egypt and against trends to restrict well-established religious practices such as circumcision. The pope specifically expressed concern about the bans on kosher slaughter in Poland and directed Cardinal Kurt Koch, the president of the Vatican’s Commission for Relations with the Jews, to investigate and host a follow-up meeting as early as next week.

Pope Francis: Jesus has no need of armies to overcome evil

(Vatican Radio) “Where Jesus is, there is always humility, meekness, and love.” That was the message of Pope Francis in his Mass this morning at the Casa Santa Marta. The Pope emphasized the distinction between the “tranquil light” of Jesus that speaks to our hearts, and the light of the world, an “artificial light” that makes us arrogant and proud.

Christian identity, the Holy Father said, is “an identity of light, not of darkness.” Pope Francis began his homily from the words of Saint Paul to the first disciples of Jesus: “You, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness . . . you are children of the light.” This Light, he observed, is not well-liked by the world. But Jesus came precisely to save us from sin: “His light saves us from the darkness.” On the other hand, he continued, today “one might think that there is the possibility” of having the light “with so many scientific things, and so many of the things of humanity”:

“You can know everything, you can have knowledge of all things and this light on things. But the light of Jesus is something else. It is not a light of ignorance, no! It’s a light of wisdom and sagacity, but it is something other than the light of the world. The light that the world offers us is an artificial light, strong, perhaps – but that of Jesus is stronger, eh! - strong like a firework, like a flash of photography. Instead, the light of Jesus is a mild light, it is a quiet light, it is a light of peace, it’s like the light on Christmas night: without pretence.”

I was surrounded by vipers in Vatican, claims cardinal removed by the Pope
DateSeptember 3, 2013 - 10:36AM

Rome: The Vatican's de facto prime minister has hit out at his enemies a day after being ordered out by the Pope, claiming that he was surrounded by "crows and vipers" who undermined him.

Defending his record despite a series of scandals, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, 78, also appeared to suggest that any blame for errors should be shared by Pope Benedict XVI, who appointed him as secretary of state, effectively his number two, in 2006.

After taking over a Holy See allegedly characterised by gossip and back-stabbing, Francis equated gossip with murder

The backlash followed the surprise announcement on Saturday that Pope Francis had named Archbishop Pietro Parolin, 58, currently nuncio in Venezuela, as Cardinal Bertone's replacement, with a handover due next month.

Cardinal Bertone's tenure culminated with the leaking by Benedict's butler of papal correspondence last year. Among the documents were claims that Cardinal Bertone ran a Vatican riven by petty rivalries, corruption and mismanagement.

But speaking on the sidelines of a mass being celebrated on Sunday in Sicily, Cardinal Bertone chose to fight back. "On balance I consider these seven years to have been positive," he said. "Naturally there were problems, particularly in the last two years, they have made many accusations against me... A mix of crows and vipers."

He said while it might seem like the secretary of state "decides and controls everything", that was not the case. "There were matters that got out of control because they were problems which were sealed within the management of certain people who did not contact the secretary of state," he said.

"I always gave everything but certainly I had my shortcomings and if I could relive certain moments now I would act differently. But that does not mean that I did not try to serve the Church."

Cardinal Bertone should have stepped down upon turning 75, but was kept on by Benedict, reportedly to the displeasure of a rival faction of bureaucrats within the Vatican's walls.

On his relationship with Benedict, who made history earlier this year by stepping down from his post as head of the Roman Catholic Church, he said: "An honest assessment cannot but take note of how the secretary of state is the first assistant of the pope, a faithful executor of the tasks with which he is entrusted. Something I did and will do."

In a further attempt to show he had not acted alone, Cardinal Bertone added that "the secretary of state works in a team of five, a fine group that works very much together" - a reference to the senior officials at the secretariat of state who worked alongside Cardinal Bertone, and who, unlike him, have been reconfirmed in their roles by Pope Francis.

Pope Francis: renewed appeal for peace (full text)

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis renewed his appeal for peace in Syria and throughout the world on Wednesday, once again inviting Christians of every denomination, believers of every religious tradition and all people of good will to take part in the worldwide fast and vigil of prayer and penance for peace, which he has called for September 7th, the vigil of the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lady, whom we venerate as Queen of Peace. First announced at the Sunday Angelus at the start of the week, many local Churches have already organized their own initiatives to mark the day. The Holy Father especially urged the faithful of Rome and pilgrims to the city to participate in the prayer vigil to be held in St. Peter's Square starting at 7 PM Rome Time and continuing until midnight. The Holy Father concluded, “May a powerful cry for peace go up from every land!” Listen to our report: RealAudioMP3

Below, please find Vatican Radio’s translation of the full text of Pope Francis’ appeal.

Pope Francis: Jesus has a promise and a mission for every Christian.

(Vatican Radio) At his morning mass on Thursday, Pope Francis reflected on the different ways in which Christ reveals himself in the life of a Christian, offering support and giving each one a mission.

Listen to the report by Susy Hodges: RealAudioMP3

Speaking at his morning mass in the Santa Marta residence in the Vatican, Pope Francis spoke of how when Jesus comes into our lives, he always gives “a promise, a promise that gives comfort, a request for generosity and a mission to be carried out.” He said the gospel account of how Jesus, after the miraculous catch of fish invited the fishermen Peter, James and John to follow him, is an example of this. He promised to make them fishers of men and then invited them to leave everything and follow him. And this is what the apostles did, they left everything

Pope Francis says “Jesus never asks us to follow him without telling us what our mission is.” “ It’s not like a show to go along the path of Jesus,” he said. “ We follow him to do something and that’s our mission.”

Pope Francis writes letter to President Putin of Russia ahead of G20 summit

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has written a letter to President Vladimir Putin of Russia as he prepares to host this year's G20 summit in St. Petersburg.

Below is the full text of the Pope's letter to President Putin.

To His Excellency
Mr Vladimir Putin
President of the Russian Federation

"In the course of this year, you have the honour and the responsibility of presiding over the Group of the twenty largest economies in the world. I am aware that the Russian Federation has participated in this group from the moment of its inception and has always had a positive role to play in the promotion of good governance of the world’s finances, which have been deeply affected by the crisis of 2008.

In today’s highly interdependent context, a global financial framework with its own just and clear rules is required in order to achieve a more equitable and fraternal world, in which it is possible to overcome hunger, ensure decent employment and housing for all, as well as essential healthcare. Your presidency of the G20 this year has committed itself to consolidating the reform of the international financial organizations and to achieving a consensus on financial standards suited to today’s circumstances. However, the world economy will only develop if it allows a dignified way of life for all human beings, from the eldest to the unborn child, not just for citizens of the G20 member states but for every inhabitant of the earth, even those in extreme social situations or in the remotest places.

From this standpoint, it is clear that, for the world’s peoples, armed conflicts are always a deliberate negation of international harmony, and create profound divisions and deep wounds which require many years to heal. Wars are a concrete refusal to pursue the great economic and social goals that the international community has set itself, as seen, for example, in the Millennium Development Goals. Unfortunately, the many armed conflicts which continue to afflict the world today present us daily with dramatic images of misery, hunger, illness and death. Without peace, there can be no form of economic development. Violence never begets peace, the necessary condition for development.

Pope to Orthodox Syrian Catholicos from India: let us work towards reconciliation, unity

(Vatican Radio) May we “continue and intensify the commitment to ecumenism, encounter and dialogue towards full communion:” with that message, Pope Francis on Thursday welcomed in the Vatican Baselios Paulose II, Catholicos of the East and Metropolitan of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. Tracey McClure reports: RealAudioMP3

In his remarks to the Catholicos, Pope Francis recalled the efforts of his predecessor John Paul II and the former Catholicos Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Mathews I which led to the creation in 1990 of an ongoing commission which has laid out agreements for the “common use of buildings of worship and cemeteries, the mutual concession of spiritual and liturgical resources in specific pastoral situations, and the necessity to identify new forms of collaboration” in the face of growing social and religious challenges.

Noting that past relations between their two Churches had been marred by “division and rivalry,” Pope Francis said he hoped both sides could work towards reconciliation by cultivating a “culture of encounter” by “overcoming prejudices and closed attitudes which are part of a kind of “culture of clashes” and source of division.” He called for “prayer and commitment” in order to allow friendship and cooperation to grow among the clergy, the faithful, and “among the various churches born from the witness given by St Thomas.”

Fr Adolfo Nicolas: Military action in Syria would be "an abuse of power"

The Jesuit General, Father Adolfo Nicolas, in an interview with John Pontifex of the Independent Catholic News posted on September 4, says military action in Syria would be an abuse of power.

Please find below the full text of the interview

The Jesuit General has accused the United States and France of an "abuse of power", in considering military action in Syria and says the Jesuits fully support Pope Francis' call for a day of prayer and fasting in support of peace this Saturday.

While he says he would not normally comment on international or political situations, Father General Adolfo Nicolás SJ says the current circumstances mean he cannot keep silent, stating: "I cannot understand who gave the United States or France the right to act against a country in a way that will certainly increase the suffering of the citizens of that country, who, by the way, have already suffered beyond measure."

Fr Nicolás outlines three fundamental problems. Firstly, an abuse of power which, he says, would be like "the big boy of the neighbourhood" abusing, harassing and bullying the weaker members of the community. Secondly, he expresses concern about the lack of concrete information about the use of chemical weapons in Syria. And he highlights in particular the impact that any military action by the US and France would have upon "the ordinary innocent and poor people" of Syria.

The Jesuit General says "the danger is now" and he echoes the Holy Father's call for a day of prayer and fasting for peace on 7 September.

The full text of the extraordinary interview with him is given below.
