Pope: Guard against deceit of the devil

(Vatican Radio) Christians must always guard against the deceit of the devil, said Pope Francis at Friday’s morning Mass in Casa Santa Marta. The Pope underlined that Christians cannot follow the victory of Jesus over evil “halfway”, nor confuse or relativize truth in the battle against the devil.

Jesus casts out demons, and then someone offers explanations “to diminish the power of the Lord,” he said. The Pope focused his homily on the day’s Gospel and immediately underlined that there is always the temptation to want to diminish the figure of Jesus, as if he were “a healer at most” and so as not to take him “so seriously”. It is an attitude, he observed, that has “reached our present day”.

Reassessing the role of women in the Church

(Vatican Radio) In his wide-ranging recent interview with the Jesuit magazine, La Civiltà Cattolica, Pope Francis spoke about his desire to "investigate further the role of women in the church.’ He continued: “We have to work harder to develop a profound theology of the woman. Only by making this step will it be possible to better reflect on their function within the church. The feminine genius is needed wherever we make important decisions”

Among those who welcomed the Pope’s words was Dr Anna Rowlands, a theologian and lecturer at King’s College, London. She works closely with CAFOD and other faith based organisations helping to put the rich social teaching of the Church into action in its justice and peace ministry.

She told Philippa Hitchen she believes the time is right to rediscover the work of female theologians from past generations and to reassess the vital contribution that women can make to the life of the Church today….

Pope declares new saint, advances seven causes

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has declared a new saint and advanced seven other causes for sainthood, the latter including a North American religious sister and two laymen. A statement, issued Friday by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, said the Pope has recognized the sainthood of Medieval mystic Blessed Angela da Foligno and “enrolled her” on the Church’s official “catalogue of saints”.

A laywoman and member of the Secular Franciscan Order, Blessed Angela was born in a well-to-do family in Foligno, Italy, circa 1248; she died on 4 January 1309. A wife, mother and widow, she lived a deep spiritual conversion in 1285. Attracted by the ideals of St. Francis of Assisi, she joined the Secular Franciscan Order six years later. Her visions were recorded by her spiritual director.

The Pope also authorized a decree, attributing a miracle to the intercession of Venerable Maria Assunta Caterina Marchetti (1871-1948), Italian co-foundress of a community of religious sisters, the Congregazione delle Suore Missionarie di San Carlo.

The decree also recognizes the heroic virtues of:

Bishop Pio Alberto Del Corona (1837-1912), Italian founder of the Dominican Sisters of the Holy Spirit
Attilio Luciano Giordani (1913-1972), Italian layman, father, and Salesian Cooperator
Sr. Maria Eleonora Giorgi (1882-1945), Italian religious sister of the Sisters Servants of Our Lady of Sorrows
Amato Ronconi (c. 1226-1292), Italian layman, Secular Franciscan and founder of a hospice for the poor in Rimini, Italy
Sr. Marie Elisabeth Turgeon (1840-1881), Canadian foundress of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary
Sr. Maria Jane Wilson (1840-1916), Indian foundress of the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Victories.

Pope Francis meets with President of European Parliament

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Friday met with the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schultz. During the meeting, the two men discussed the situation with migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea, especially in light of the tragedy off the island of Lampedusa in which over 300 people died in a shipwreck.

“I share the view that for the richest part of the world it is a shame that people, just some metres in front of our borders, or coasts, died. So what the European Union must do, and the member-states of the Union especially, is reform our whole system of immigration,” Martin Shultz said. We have the Dublin II Convention which is covering exclusively political asylum, but temporary protection for refugees from civil war regions, from regions of natural disasters, or even a system of legal immigration, is missing in Europe.”

Pope Francis: Let anti-Semitism be banished from every heart

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Friday met with members of Rome’s Jewish community to mark the 70th anniversary of the deportation of the city’s Jewish population during the Nazi occupation. Among those present was the Chief Rabbi of Rome, Dr. Riccardo Di Segni, the President of the Jewish Community of Rome , Dr. Riccardo Pacifici, and the President of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities , Dr. Renzo Gattegna.

Pope Francis began by expressing his closeness to Rome’s Jewish community, which is the oldest in Western Europe, having a continued presence in the city of over two thousand years.

“For many centuries…the Jewish community and the Church of Rome have lived in our city , with a history - as we well know - which was often transversed by misunderstandings and even true grievances,” Pope Francis said. “However, it is a story , that with the help of God , has for many decades experienced the development of friendly and fraternal relations.”

The Pope then turned to the occasion of the visit. The deportation of over one thousand Roman Jews on October 16, 1943, during the Nazi occupation of Rome. They were sent to Auschwitz, and only 16 ever returned to the homes.

Marian Day: Pope Francis and Benedict XVI to welcome statue of Our Lady of Fatima
2013-10-11 17:53:59

October 11, 2013. (Romereports.com) Pope Francis is getting ready to celebrate Marian Day in St. Peter's Square along with thousands of pilgrims. The celebrations will be held on Saturday October 12th and Sunday the 13th. The Pope will entrust the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. This year's celebration will have a special guest: The original statue of Our Lady of Fatima will be flown into Rome.

President, Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization

“The statue of Fatima should arrive to Rome's Fiumicino airport on Saturday at around 2 o' clock. We hope there are no delays. The direct flight is from Lisbon to Rome.”

As part of the Year of Faith, the theme of this year's Marian Day is 'Blessed are you for Believing.' The statue itself will be officially welcomed by Pope Francis on Saturday at around 5 o'clock. A long list of activities are available for pilgrims before and after.

MSGR. RINO FISICHELLA
President, Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization

“On Saturday morning, at 8:00a.m, we'll have a pilgrimage to the tomb of St. Peter. Then we'll have a Eucharistic Adoration nearby in the Santa Monica church. The pilgrimage will start at four o clock and visitors are asked to welcome Our Lady of Fatima with a white handkerchief, which has become part of the tradition. Pope Francis will give his catechesis at 5 o clock, but St. Peter's Square will be officially opened at 2. 30 in the afternoon to welcome everyone.”

The Vatican also announced that Benedict XVI will privately pray before the statue of Our Lady of Fatima, just moments after it's flown into the Vatican by helicopter. Back in 2010, Benedict XVI actually visited her Shrine and celebrated Mass.

Pope Francis: Women called to service, not servitude

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Saturday spoke about “the vocation and the mission” of women on Saturday when addressing participants of a study seminar organized by the Women’s Section of the Pontifical Council for the Laity on the 25th anniversary of Blessed Pope John Paul II’s Apostolic Letter Mulieris Dignitatem. The letter was the first in papal teaching dedicated entirely to the theme of the woman, and the study seminar in particular discussed the point which says that God entrusts man, the human being, to woman in a special way.

“What does this ‘special entrusting’…of the human being to woman signify? It seems evident to me that my predecessor is referring to maternity,” said Pope Francis.

“Many things can change and have changed in our cultural and social evolution, but the fact remains that it is the woman who conceives, carries in her womb and gives birth to the children of men,” the Pope continued. “And this is not simply a biological matter, but carries a wealth of implications for the woman herself, for her way of being, for her relationships, for the way in which we lend respect to human life and to life in general. Calling a woman to maternity, God entrusted the human being to her in an altogether special manner.”

The Pope warned that there are two dangers always present when speaking about this topic, calling them “two extreme opposites that destroy woman and her vocation.”

“The first is to reduce maternity to a social role, to a task, albeit noble, but which in fact sets the woman aside with her potential and does not value her fully in the building of community. This is both in the civil sphere and in the ecclesial sphere,” explained the Holy Father. “And, in reaction to this, there is the other danger in the opposite direction, that of promoting a type of emancipation which, in order to occupy spaces taken away from the masculine, abandons the feminine with the precious traits that characterize it.”

Pope Francis also spoke about the special gifts given to women in the Church.

Pope Francis: Mary’s faith unties the knot of sin

(Vatican Radio) Thousands of pilgrims were in Saint Peter’s Square Saturday evening to join Pope Francis in venerating the original statue of Our Lady of Fatima. The statue made its journey to Rome as the celebrations for the Feast of Our Lady Fatima, which is October 13. Pope Francis will preside over Mass on Sunday morning, and the recitation of the Rosary before the statue. He will then consecrate the world to Mary’s Immaculate Heart.

During the evening’s event, the Pope welcomed the statue, which was processed through Saint Peter’s Square, and led the faithful in reciting the Seven Sorrows of Mary. The Holy Father then offered a reflection which focused on the Blessed Mother’s faith, explaining that her “faith unties the knot of sin.”

Pope Francis speaks about the Faith of Mary

(Vatican Radio) A Marian prayer vigil was held on Saturday evening in St. Peter's Square, with a special catechesis by Pope Francis. The statue of Our Lady of Fatima from the Portuguese shrine was flown to Rome for the event. The Pope was scheduled to consecrate the world to Our Lady during a Mass on Sunday.

His prepared catechesis is re-produced below.

Catechesis of the Holy Father
“The Faith of Mary”
Marian Vigil
(Saturday, 12 October 2013)

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

We are all gathered for this event of the Year of Faith devoted to Mary, Mother of Christ and of the Church, our Mother. The statue of Our Lady, which has come from Fatima, helps us to feel her presence in our midst. Mary always brings us to Jesus. She is a woman of faith, a true believer. What was Mary’s faith like?

Fatima: the story of 'the miracle of the sun'

(Vatican Radio) As a Marian weekend takes place here in the Vatican, in the context of the Year of Faith, the original statue of Our Lady of Fatima will be brought here on Saturday 12th of October for the occasion.

A statue with a precious crown which famously has the bullet with which Blessed John Paul II was shot at in Saint Peter’s Square encased in it. You may remember how the date of this attempt on his life took place on the 13th of May, the same date as that of the first apparition of Our Lady to the three Fatima shepherd children back in 1917. And how this Polish Pontiff believed it was through her intercession that his life had been spared on that occasion. Hence his symbolic gesture of encasing the bullet in the crown as a sign of thanksgiving for the grace received.

But on Saturday this statue is back in Saint Peter’s Square on another significant date regarding the Fatima apparitions : the 13th of October. The date when in 1917 Our Lady appeared to the three shepherd children from the hamlet of Aljustrel for the final time, in what is known as ‘the miracle of the sun ‘ .

At the time the three children, Francisco, Jacinta and Lucia, had predicted that a miracle would take place on that spot, at that particular time, “so that everyone would believe”, in a message which they had received from heaven.

The Bishop of Fatima of the day wrote in his Pastoral Letter on the Miracle: “thousands upon thousands of persons…saw all the manifestations of the sun…a phenomenon which no astronomical observatory registered and thus was not natural…persons of every category and social class, believers and unbelievers as well as journalists of the principal Portuguese newspapers..”

Pope Francis: Say Yes to God like Mary

(Vatican Radio) Over 100 thousand people came to St Peter’s Square on Sunday to see Pope Francis consecrate the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

The statue of Our Lady of Fatima, which had been brought to the Square the evening before, took centre stage as the Holy Father made an act of Devotion in front of her. In prayer he said, “We are confident that each of us is precious in your sight, guard our lives in your arms: bless and strengthen every desire for goodness.”

It was the culmination of a morning in which the Pope celebrated Mass on this, the feast of Our Lady of Fatima. The devotion to Our Lady was very much in evidence as many of those present held up images of Mary and clasped in their hands miniature statues of Our Lady of Fatima as they listened to the Pope’s homily.

Pope Francis who is well known for his devotion to the Blessed Virgin said that it was a day to consider one of the marvelous things Mary had done, that was “to be chosen to be the Mother of God”.

Taking Sunday’s liturgy as his inspiration, Pope Francis reflected on three things. They were that God surprises us, God asks us to be faithful and God is our strength.

Pope consecrates world to immaculate heart of Mary

The Pope celebrated mass in St Peter’s square this morning in honour of the Marian Day, an event organised as part of the Year of Faith on the anniversary of the final apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Fatima (13th of October 1917). He also consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Please find below the full text of Pope Francis’ homily in English translation.

In the Psalm we said: “Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvellous things” (Ps 98:1). Today we consider one of the marvellous things which the Lord has done: Mary! A lowly and weak creature like ourselves, she was chosen to be the Mother of God, the Mother of her Creator.

Considering Mary in the light of the readings we have just heard, I would like to reflect with you on three things: first, God surprises us, second, God asks us to be faithful, and third, God is our strength.

"Service, Yes – Servitude, No!": "Woman's Day," Francis Edition

On a Saturday where the exaltation of woman was already center stage at the Vatican, this morning the Pope touched on the more hot-button side of the perennial issue in ecclesial life, receiving the participants in a conference organized by the Pontifical Council for the Laity marking the 25th anniversary of Mulieris dignitatem – the John Paul II treatise which was the first magisterial statement on women ever given by a Pope.

 Here, from Francis' address:

On a context note, when it comes to an enhanced "presence" for women in the church, a major proof-test of Francis' commitment to his pledge will be what ensues in the reform of the Roman Curia.

With Papa Bergoglio already having named women to the twin Pontifical Commissions he respectively established to advise on the Vatican Bank and reforming the "economic-administrative structure" of the church's central government, as of this writing, well-placed indications remain that it would be more of a surprise if a woman weren't tapped to head a Vatican dicastery at some point during the structural earthquake coming over the next several months.

All of fifty years since the Australian Rosemary Goldie became the first woman appointed to "Superior" level of a Roman office, only three others have since been called into the top rank, but never the top job, and two of the trio were religious. Of the group, two remain in office: the Undersecretary of the "Congregation for Religious," Holy Blood Sister Nicoletta Spazzati, named in 2011, and Dr Flaminia Giovanelli, a specialist in development issues who was elevated to the #3 post at the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace in 2010.

On the more general front, the role of laypeople in church governance was termed "fundamental" by Francis in his Assisi talk to representatives of the local church – an event that unusually included the members of parish and diocesan pastoral councils. And what the Pope deems "fundamental" in the trenches won't mean anything less at the Vatican... if anything, by way of example, it might end up being all the more.

Pope warns of perfect piety that neglects the poor

(Vatican Radio)The Pope on Monday warned of " an attitude of perfect piety ," which looks at the doctrine of salvation but do not care for the "poor people " . He was speaking during his Homily at morning Mass at the Casa Santa Martha. Lydia O’Kane reports. RealAudioMP3

The Pope recalling Monday’s Gospel reading from Luke centred his homily on the “Sign of Jonah” and how Jesus speaks of a “ wicked generation”. The Pope explained that Jesus with these words was not referring to the people who followed him with love but he was pin pointing the doctors of the Church that tried to test him and make him fall into a trap ."

Pope Francis went on the say that the Pharisees asked for signs but Jesus answered by saying that he alone will give the “Sign of Jonah” just like Jonah himself became a sign to the Ninevites.

Pope: credible Christian witnessses wanted

(Vatican Radio) The importance of credible Christian witness to overcome indifference and religious illiteracy: that was the theme at the heart of Pope Francis’ message on Monday to members of the Pontifical Council for New Evangelisation.

Noting that so many people are indifferent or have grown away from the Church, the Pope said what we need most is credible witnesses, who show the beauty of God’s love through their words and their lives. While there are individuals and ideologies within the history of the Church that may be partly responsible for the current crisis, he said, we must continue on the path indicated by the Second Vatican Council to strip away those things which damage the face of the Church. Instead, the Pope said, all Christians must make God’s mercy and tenderness visible through their joyful witness and charity to others.

Pope Francis: Beware of idolatry and hypocrisy

(Vatican Radio) Idolatry and hypocrisy do not spare even the Christian life. Pope Francis put us on guard against both these vices in his homily at this morning’s Mass at the Casa Santa Marta. In order not to give in to the dangers of these sins, he said, it is necessary to put into practice the commandments of love of God and love of neighbour.

Once again, the liturgy of the Mass elicits from Pope Francis a reflection on the traps that punctuate the life of faith: To become an apostle of one’s own ideas, or a devotee of one’s own well-being, rather than that of God; speaking ill about someone because he does not conform to certain formalities, forgetting that the “new” commandment of Christianity is love of neighbour without ifs and buts. From the words of St. Paul, the Pope goes on to condemn the sin of idolatry, that of people who – as the Apostle says – “for although they knew God they did not accord him glory as God or give Him thanks” preferring to worship “the creature rather than the creator.” It is an idolatry, the Pope said, that “stifles the truth of the Faith” in which “is revealed the righteousness of God”:

Pope Francis’ Life and Vision Explored in New Documentary
The Knights of Columbus produced the film, which will air this week on the Fox Business Network.
10/14/2013

ROME — A new documentary produced by the Knights of Columbus traces the background of Pope Francis, offering insight into his life and thought through the words of those who know him best.

“This documentary introduces people to Pope Francis in a very accessible way,” said Andrew Walther, one of the documentary’s executive producers.

“Most people know something about our Holy Father,” Walther said, “but through his own words and the interviews with those who worked with him in Argentina, as well as with key Catholic figures in the United States, this film will help give viewers an in-depth understanding of the Pope's thought, life and work.”

The hour-long Francis: The Pope From the New World will air on the Fox Business Network on Oct. 20, at 5pm Eastern time.

Pope Francis thanks Cardinal Bertone for years of service

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis sent a message of thanks and held a farewell ceremony for the Vatican’s Secretary of State emeritus, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, SDB, on Tuesday. The 78 year-old Cardinal Bertone served in the office from his appointment by Benedict XVI in June of 2006. In remarks to the gathered officials and staff of the Secretariat of State of the Holy See, the Secretary emeritus remembered the seven years’ service and more with his collaborators, who, he said, “[served with] dedication and sometimes with sacrifice.” He thanked Pope Francis for his benevolence and offered best wishes to his successor as Secretary, Archbishop Pietro Parolin, who was not in attendance due to a medical procedure and is due to assume his duties.

Pope Francis: Message to Cardinal Bertone

(Vatican Radio) Please find a Vatican Information Service translation of Pope Francis' Message of thanks to Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, S.D.B., Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, who ended his mandate as Secretary of State on Tuesday, below.
**********************************************
“It is time for you, dear brother, to 'pass the baton' in the service of secretary of State. I therefore wish to join with you spiritually in giving thanks to God for the good that he has allowed you to achieve in this, such a delicate and challenging role. The memory of St. Theresa of Jesus, whom we celebrate on this date, invites you to turn your gaze to God: “Let nothing disturb you”, says the great saint of Avila, “let nothing frighten you; whoever has God lacks nothing”.

Vatican unveils new focus on sporting events for Year of Faith

(Vatican Radio) The Pontifical Council for Culture announced on Tuesday a number of new sporting events aimed at raising the importance of sports during this year of faith. These include the launch of the Vatican’s very own cricket team and a race that will take place next Sunday up to St Peter’s Square, where participants will be greeted by Pope Francis following the Angelus prayer.

‘I have finished the race: I have kept the faith’ Those words of St Paul in his second letter to Timothy are at the heart of a number of initiatives announced by the Vatican’s Council for Culture in order to raise the profile of sports within the Catholic world. It’s not just St Paul’s sporting quotations either, since the New Testament is full of different words and expressions comparing our journey through life to a race or a competition, to which we must dedicate our minds and train our bodies.

Noting how last year’s London Olympics featured many athletes who spoke openly about their faith, Council officials have organised a 100 metres relay race up the Via della Conciliazione leading to St Peter’s Square for Sunday October 20th. Msgr Melchor Sanchez de Toca is undersecretary of the Council for Culture:
