Pope at Audience: “We will be with the Lord forever”
2014-10-15 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Wednesday encouraged the faithful never to lose hope, because – he said – Christian hope is not simply an optimistic desire, it is based on the fact that one day the people of God will be reunited with Him.

Speaking to the crowds gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the weekly General Audience, the Pope’s catechesis focused on the fulfilment of God’s promises in the coming of Christ at the end of time.

Pope: The perennial relevance of St Teresa of Avila
15/10/2014

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has sent a message to mark the Jubilee Year for the 500th anniversary of the birth of St Teresa of Avila, a Discalced Carmelite and Doctor of the Church. On this her feast day, the Pope writes that St Teresa teaches us that the path to God is the path towards love for one another.

In the message released on the Feast day of St Teresa of Avila, the Holy Father underlines that this great Saint who was born on the 28th of March 1515 and died on the 4th of October 1582 was a woman of immense spirituality and focuses on four gifts in particular that she possessed, those being joy, prayer, fellowship and being in touch with the realities of her own time.

Synod14: Press Briefing Oct. 15
Vatican City,  October 15, 2014

At the briefing at the Holy See Press Office this afternoon, Father Federico Lombardi, and the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, gave the following briefing on the latest synod discussions:

“First of all, we completed the work this morning and that’s the reason for the smile on my face,” Archbishop Kurtz joked.

Speaking on the English discussion groups, he recalled the sense of community present. He cited the example that, after their closing prayer, someone asked to have a picture taken of all of them together, which he said was “a sign of the unity, and the respect and coming together, of not only the delegates, but also many families from various continents," among others.

“We did do the work,” he continued. “In the work we did, we took seriously the fact that we were presented with a wonderful working document."

The head of American bishops noted their efforts “to bring together collective wisdom that we have” and said they will be proposing a number of amendments.

“In essence, the approach we took was this: Just as in our Church, the way we pray and the way we believe is integral. So also the way we believe and the way we put our belief into practice in pastoral care is also integral,” Archbishop Kurtz said.

“So, many of our reflections, the amendments we made, will reflect that,” he continued.

The head of US bishops said he believes people will notice that they were very intent on making sure that "a message of hope" and "a restored confidence" was present.

Synod groups work to fine tune document on family life
2014-10-15 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Participants at the Synod on the Family continued their work in small language groups on Wednesday, offering amendments or additions to their working document made public earlier this week. At the daily briefing to report on this “work in progress”, the head of the Holy See press office Fr Federico Lombardi was joined by the head of the U.S. Catholic Bishops Conference, Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, by Spanish Cardinal Lluis Martinez Sistach and by Italian Archbishop Rino Fisichella, head of the Pontifical Council for New Evangelisation. Philippa Hitchen reports:

Several bishops I spoke to at the Synod Hall this morning told me they’d been “battling on” to try and find consensus over the most difficult issues of family life and relationships raised in their mid-term report.

At the press conference however, the three speakers were keen to underline the spirit of “communion, fraternity and pastoral concern” which they say is pervading the 10 ‘circoli minori’ or small language groups. These include bishops, religious and lay experts, as well as representatives from eight other Christian Churches, all called to share their perspectives on how the Church can best uphold family values while reaching out to those living in so-called ‘irregular situations’. …

“We hope our work will contribute to improved pastoral document…..”

Archbishop Kurtz told journalists about three areas of change that participants in his English language group are hoping to introduce…

“One would be to highlight the important witness of sacrificial, loving families today…..second would be to make sure our words are welcoming and come from the heart…and the third would be to make sure our pastoral outreach is located in the beauty of Scripture and Church teaching.”

Cardinal Pell says synod's 'relatio' document is tendentious and incomplete and is being revised
15 October 2014

A key document from the bishops' Synod on the Family calling for the Church to make radical changes to its pastoral approach to gays, divorce and remarried and those in civil marriages has been criticised by Cardinal George Pell as “tendentious and incomplete”.

The text – known as the relatio – was released at the synod’s midway point and sought to summarise the discussions at the gathering so far. It has been described as a “pastoral earthquake” and suggests the Church should recognise the good in unions outside marriage.

But Cardinal Pell, one of Pope Francis' close advisers, who has been tasked with reforming Vatican finances, said that the document was an “incomplete resumé” of what the Synod Fathers had said it needed to be “enhanced and corrected”.

He added that after the relatio had been presented three-quarters of the participants in the synod hall who had made interventions had voiced problems with the text.

“The question of Communion for divorced and remarried is only the tip of the iceberg,"  he told The Tablet. "In seeking to be merciful, some want to open up Catholic teaching on marriage, divorce, civil unions, homosexuality in a radically liberalising direction, whose fruits we see in other Christian traditions,” he said.

He added it was “strange that there was so little in the document on scriptural teaching and magisterial teaching on marriage, sexuality, family.”

The relatio is being discussed and revised by the Synod Fathers and will be presented to the Pope on Saturday.

How an incorrect translation of the synod report created chaos
Vatican City, Oct 15, 2014 / 12:17 pm (EWTN News)

An incorrect translation into English of the original midterm report of the Synod on the Family may have spurred controversial interpretations of the document itself.

The document's original version was written in Italian, which Pope Francis directed to be used as the official language of the synod. In prior synods the official language had been Latin, esteemed for its precision and lack of ambiguity.

The point of controversy occurs at paragraph 50 of the relatio. The Italian original version, after praising the gifts and talents homosexuals may give to the Christian community, asked: “le nostre comunità sono in grado di esserlo accettando e valutando il loro orientamento sessuale, senza compromettere la dottrina cattolica su famiglia e matrimonio?”

In the English translation provided by the Vatican, this is rendered as: “Are our communities capable of providing that, accepting and valuing their sexual orientation, without compromising Catholic doctrine on the family and matrimony?”

The key word “valutando,” which has sparked controversy within the Church, was translated by the Vatican as “valuing.”

Italian's “valutando” in fact means “evaluating,” and in this context would be better translated with “weighing” or “considering.”

The English translation, in contrast, suggests a valuing of the homosexual orientation, which could at least create confusion to those who are faithful to the teaching of the Church.

It must be said that the translation was not an “official” translation – the Vatican website notes at the top it is an “unofficial translation” – but it was the working translation delivered by the Holy See press office in order to help journalists who are not confident in Italian with their work.

However, until now only this “working translation” has been provided.

LGBT activist group hopes to influence family synod

Rome, Italy, Oct 15, 2014 / 12:48 am (CNA).- The start of the Extraordinary Synod on the Family has triggered a wave of activism from well-funded LGBT activist groups in the U.S. who are targeting “outspoken” Catholic bishops in hopes of changing Catholic practice and moral doctrine.

“Most important is the opportunity to create a precedent for change,” the Human Rights Campaign said in its pamphlet on the synod.

The LGBT group has announced an activist effort targeting eight bishops in a pamphlet that labels them as “the best of the worst Catholic bishops across the country.”

Its campaign will target bishops including Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco, Archbishop John Nienstedt of St. Paul-Minneapolis, Archbishop Dennis Schnurr of Cincinnati, U.S. bishops’ conference president and Kentucky Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of Louisville, Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia, Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore and Bishop Thomas Paprocki of Springfield, Ill.

Pope at Santa Marta: In praise of God
2014-10-16 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) It’s easy to pray for a grace, it’s far more difficult to pray in praise of the Lord, but this is the prayer of true joy, said Pope Francis at Mass Thursday morning in Santa Marta.

Reflecting on St Paul's Letter to the Ephesians, which joyfully elevates a prayer of blessing to God, the Pope noted that this is something “we don’t normally do”: Instead giving "praise to God is pure gratuity" and in doing so we enter into "a great joy".

"We know very well how to pray when we want to ask for things, even when we want to thank the Lord, but a prayer of praise is a bit more difficult for us: we are not used to praising the Lord. We can do this better by remembering all of the things that the Lord has done for us in our lives: 'In Him - in Christ - He chose us before the creation of the world'. Blessed are you, Lord, because You chose me! It is the joy of a paternal and tender closeness”.

"Prayers of praise" - he continued - bring us this joy, [the joy of ] being happy before the Lord. Let’s make a real effort to rediscover this!”. However, continued Pope Francis the "starting point" is "remembering” this choice: "God chose me before the creation of the world”.

http://www.news.va/en/news/twelfth-general-congregation-evaluation-and-sugges

Twelfth General Congregation: evaluation and suggestions based on the post-discussion report

Vatican City, 16 October 2014 (VIS) – The twelfth General Congregation included the presentation, in the Assembly, of the Reports of the ten Small Groups, divided according to language: two in French, three in English, three in Italian and two in Spanish. In general, the Small Groups presented both an evaluation of the “Relatio post disceptationem” (RPD), a provisional document published at the midway point during the Synod, as well as proposals to incorporate in the “Relatio Synodi” (RS), the definitive and conclusive document of the Assembly.

Firstly, some perplexity was voiced regarding to the publication, although legitimate, of the RPD since, it was said, this is a working document that does not express an opinion shared univocally by all the Synod Fathers. Therefore, after expressing their appreciation of the work involved in drawing up the text and regarding its structure, the Small Groups presented their suggestions.

It was first underlined that in the RPD there is a focus on the concerns of families in crisis, without broader reference to the positive message of the Gospel of the family or to the fact that marriage as a sacrament, an indissoluble union between man and woman, retains a very current value in which many couples believe. Therefore, the hope was expressed that the RS may contain a strong message of encouragement and support for the Church and for faithful married couples.

Furthermore, it was remarked that it is essential to underline more clearly the doctrine on marriage, emphasising that it is a gift from God. It was further proposed that elements not contained in the RPD be integrated in the RS, such as the theme of adoption, expressing the hope that bureaucratic procedures be streamlined, both at national and international levels, and also the themes of biotechnology and the spread of culture via the internet, which may condition family life, as well as a note regarding the importance of policies in favour of the family.

In addition, it was said that greater attention should be paid to the presence of the elderly within families, and to families who live in conditions of extreme poverty. The grave problems of prostitution, female genital mutilation and the exploitation of minors for sexual purposes and for labour were denounced. It is important, it was said, to underline the essential role of families in evangelisation and in the transmission of faith, highlighting their missionary vocation. Overall, the aim is to offer a balanced and global idea of the “family” in a Christian sense.

With regard to difficult family situations, the Small Groups highlighted that the Church should be a welcoming home for all, in order that no-one feel refused. However, greater clarity was advocated, to avoid confusion, hesitation and euphemisms in language, regarding for example the law of gradualness, so that it does not become gradualness of the law. Various Groups, furthermore, expressed perplexity regarding the analogy made with paragraph 8 of “Lumen Gentium”, inasmuch as this could give the impression of a willingness on the part of the Church to legitimise irregular family situations, even though these may represent a phase in the itinerary towards the sacrament of marriage. Other Groups expressed their hope for a more in-depth focus on the concept of “spiritual communion”, so that it may be evaluated and eventually promoted and disseminated.

With regard to possibility of divorced and remarried persons partaking in the sacrament of the Eucharist, two main perspectives emerged: on the one hand, it was suggested that the doctrine not be modified and to remain as it is at present; on the other, to open up the possibility of communication, with an approach based on compassion and mercy, but only under certain conditions. In other cases, furthermore, it was suggested that the matter be studied by a specific interdisciplinary Commission. Greater care was suggested in relation to divorced persons who have not remarried, and who are often heroic witnesses of conjugal fidelity. At the same time, an acceleration of the procedures for acknowledging matrimonial nullity and the confirmation of validity was advocated; furthermore, it was emphasised that children are not a burden but rather a gift from God, the fruit of love between spouses.

Synod14: English Relatio Texts, Groups A, B, C
Vatican City,  October 16, 2014

Relatio - Circulus Anglicus "A"
Moderator: Em.mo Card. Raymond Leo BURKE
Relator: S.E. Mons. John Atcherley DEW

I present this report of behalf of the English speaking group Anglicus "A". The group has suggested a number of amendments to the RELATIO POST DISCEPTATIONEM, some are major amendments and others quite small, nevertheless they have significant meaning attached to them. In proposing amendments we have shifted the focus from particular situations described in the Relatio to the people involved in the situations, concentrating on the goodness to be found in them.

We believed that there needed to be a new introduction to the Relatio. Our proposed Introduction is placed within the context of the great gift of the Sacrament of Matrimony and the grace of God freely given through the sacraments. It also provides a theological anthropological foundation, which we believe is needed in order to address serious issues spoken on in the Synod. We have addressed these issues within the context of Scripture and the remarkably rich Magisterium of the Church. We want the final Synod document to speak of human life, marriage and family life, as we know it to be revealed to us by God through reason and faith, both aided by the grace of God. The Relatio Synodi must proclaim the truth of the Gospel, the truth of human life and sexuality as revealed by Christ. The Word of Christ illuminates our knowledge of human nature and the intrinsic sexuality of man and woman through the natural law.

We agreed that this is to be a pastoral document, as has been expressed as the wish of the Synod, a document which speaks to people about the often critical issues which confront families today. Those issues cannot be separated from Church teaching found in the treasury of her documentation. We are aware that the final Relatio Synodi will be discussed and debated over the next year; therefore as we proposed amendments we indicated appropriate references to the Sacred Scriptures and Magisterial documents

We referred to the methodology used as appearing to be based on the SEE, JUDGE, ACT principles, but in this case it was LISTEN, JUDGE, ACT.

LISTEN and observe what others are saying and what the situation is regarding marriage and family life in the world today.

JUDGE according to what we have been gifted with through the Deposit of Faith.

ACT through our pastoral accompanying of all God’s people entrusted to our care.

W e have attempted to show in our amendments that the "Listening" or "seeing" must always be through the lens of the Gospel. Our Proposals have stressed God’s love and our pastoral love and care for individuals, while at the same time honestly recognizing and acknowledging sinful situations, and searching for ways to invite conversion of heart.

In our amendments we see suggest a return to the SEE, Judge, Act formula.

We know that the final Synod document gives us a wonderful opportunity to influence the prevailing culture and for the Church to present the way of Jesus Christ who is "The Way, the Truth and the Life" (John 14). Our amendments have tried to show that living as disciples of Jesus Christ, with all the challenges that brings is the life that leads to true joy and human happiness.

For example, where the Relatio appeared to be suggesting that sex outside of marriage may be permissible, or that cohabitation may be permissible, we have attempted to show why such lifestyles do not lead to human fulfillment. At the same time, we want to acknowledge that there are seeds of truth and goodness found in the persons involved, and through dedicated pastoral care these can be appreciated and developed. We believe that if we imply that certain life-styles are acceptable, then concerned and worried parents could very easily say "Why are we trying so hard to encourage our sons and daughters to live the Gospel and embrace Church teaching?"

We did not recommend the admission to the sacraments of divorced and re-married people, but we included a very positive and much –needed appreciation of union with Christ through other means.

The group recognizes and favors the concern and compassion the Relatio shows for those who face difficult pastoral situations in their lives. However our amendments suggest that we express these carefully so as not to create confusion in the minds and hearts of our people.

We had serious questions about the presentation of the principle of GRADUALITY. We wished to show in our amendments that we are not speaking of the GRADUALITY of DOCTRINE of faith and morals, but rather the gradual moral growth of the individual in his or her actions.

We also believe that in the Relatio Synodi we need to express words of encouragement and support to those who are faithfully living out their marriage vows and bringing up their families according to the teaching of the Church. We are grateful to those married couples who gave their witness in the Synod Hall and thank them sincerely. We also wish to address words of encouragement to grandparents and extended family members who support their families often at great expense to themselves.

There is agreement that the Relatio Synodi needs to be a pastoral document in which we use language which does not hurt people but which encourages them and helps them in their journey to God. It must speak the Truth of the Gospel clearly and directly, using language that cannot be interpreted by some to be condemning them, but rather expressing the Church’s deep interest and care for them.

As the Conclusion of the Relatio Post Disceptationem states the Synodal dialogue took place in freedom and a spirit of reciprocal listening. It has certainly raised questions that will have to be seriously considered and clarified by reflection in the Particular Churches of the world over the next year. Our prayer too is that all God’s people under the guidance of the Holy Spirit will find roads of truth and mercy for all. We thank Pope Francis for the invitation to us to live the courage of faith and the humble and honest welcome of the truth in charity.

Synod fathers seek seeds of truth in every family home
2014-10-16 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Synod participants moved another step closer to the conclusion of their two week meeting on Thursday as the results of their small working groups were made public. Church leaders and lay experts in the 10 Circoli Minori, as they’re called, have been poring over the text of a working document on the challenges facing families in the context of evangelisation. Joining Fr Federico Lombardi and his assistants at the press office to explain the next stage of the proceedings was Austrian Cardinal Christoph Schonborn, as Philippa Hitchen reports.....

A “key day” in the life of this Synod was how Fr Lombardi described the discussion on Thursday morning as leaders of the 10 language groups (3 in English and Italian, 2 in French and Spanish) presented the fruits of their labours that have been so closely scrutinised by the world’s press. Each group has worked hard to suggest improvements or amendments to be included in a final Synod document that will be discussed and voted on by the whole assembly on Saturday. While certain parts of the media have been depicting a bitter conflict between the so-called traditional and more reform-minded bishops, Canadian Fr Tom Rosica said the sincere and honest discussions have been a vital part of the Pope’s desire for a reform of the Church’s decision making process.

Synod14: Press Briefing Oct. 16
Vatican City,  October 16, 2014

At the briefing at the Holy See Press Office this afternoon, Father Federico Lombardi, Fr. Thomas Rosica, and Archbishop of Vienna, Cardinal Christoph Schonborn, spoke on the continuing work of the Synod of Bishops

During his opening remarks, Fr. Lombardi stressed that any texts released are "steps" showing "they are going forward in this journey that is continuing and will continue."

They are “not definitive results,” but are rather “contributions,” the spokesman said.

Explaining he had four key points, Fr. Rosica first said they just came back from the presentation of the individual language groups.

"As we speak, the copies of those texts are being photocopied for you so you’ll have them by the end of the session," he said.

The next stage of this process, he said, "is a that the writing team will put all these things together," and joked, “Pray for them.”

As they do this, he explained that the Synod Fathers will vote on them on Saturday, and they’ll be further discussed further Saturday afternoon.

Recalling this is his third synod, the Canadian priest continued with three personal points.

“What I had witnessed this morning is one of the most significant things I had witnessed at a Synod floor,” he said, “It is a Synod. People talk very openly, and it’s a very important step in the renewing of the synodal process.”

Referring to an announcement made at the end of this morning’s session, Fr. Rosica noted that for the writing committee that is putting the document together, in order to represent all the continents, two more people were added to it: Cardinal Napier from Africa, and Archbishop Hart of Melbourne, Australia.”

Cardinal Pell: "We're not giving in to the secular agenda; we're not collapsing in a heap."
October 16, 2014 07:54 EST

Cardinal George Pell of Australia, who is the current Prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy, was interviewed by Francis X. Rocca of Catholic News Service, and issued some strong remarks about the Synod and where it will—and will not—go:

Cardinal George Pell said working-group reports from the Synod of Bishops on the family finally give a true picture of the assembly's views, counteracting what he characterized as a misleading midterm report.

"We wanted the Catholic people around the world to know actually what was going on in talking about marriage and the family and, by and large, I think people will be immensely reassured," Cardinal Pell, prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy, told Catholic News Service Oct. 16, the day the reports were published.

"We're not giving in to the secular agenda; we're not collapsing in a heap. We've got no intention of following those radical elements in all the Christian churches, according to the Catholic churches in one or two countries, and going out of business," he said. ...

The midterm report was "tendentious, skewed; it didn't represent accurately the feelings of the synod fathers," said Cardinal Pell. "In the immediate reaction to it, when there was an hour, an hour-and-a-half of discussion, three-quarters of those who spoke had some problems with the document."

"A major absence was Scriptural teaching," he said. "A major absence was a treatment of the church tradition," including teaching on the family by Pope Paul VI, St. John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI.

Cardinal Pell also states that just 3 of the 10 small groups were in support of Cardinal Walter Kasper's proposal to allow for some divorced and remarried Catholics to receive Communion, calling that proposal a "stalking horse". He indicated that Kasper's proposal was just the "tip of the iceburg," an attempt to open the door to even more radical measures: "They want wider changes, recognition of civil unions, recognition of homosexual unions. The church cannot go in that direction. It would be a capitulation from the beauties and strengths of the Catholic tradition, where people sacrificed themselves for hundreds, for thousands of years to do this."

The texts of the ten groups are available on the Vatican website. While only three of the ten are available in English, the substance and approach are notably different than what was in the text of the Relatio. For example, from the text from the group (Circulus Anglicus "A") moderated by Cardinal Raymond Burke:

Pope at Santa Marta: Heaven in our hands
17/10/2014

(Vatican Radio) The Holy Spirit is the "seal" of light with which God has placed Heaven in Christians’ hands. Often, however, Christians avoid this light in preference of a life spent in the shadows, or worse still, in a false light, that sparkles with hypocrisy.

Pope Francis’ homily at Mass Friday morning, followed the First Reading from St. Paul who explains to the Christians of Ephesus that in believing in the Gospel they have received "the seal of the Holy Spirit." With this gift, the Pope says, "God not only chose us" but gave us a style, "a way of life, which is not only a list of habits, it is more: it is an identity":

Synod14: Italian Relatio Text, Group A
Vatican City,  October 17, 2014

Here is a ZENIT translation of the texts from Italian Group A.

Italian Relatio Text, Group A:

Relatio – Circulus Italicus “A”
Moderator: H.E. Cardinal Fernando FILONI
Reporter: H.E. Monsignor Edoardo MENICHELLI

The Synodal Fathers of the Italicus  Circle “A” and the two married couples present in the quality of Experts and Auditors, manifested their gratitude to His Eminence Cardinal Peter Erdo for the report in which he synthesized the numerous and diverse interventions that occurred in the Hall.

A question was asked immediately: What is the Synod’s aim? All agreed on the pastoral position which is situated in a perspective within which the family is given its proper place in the Church, through the ministry of spouses and in the correct lay state to be given to matrimony, within a missionary co-responsibility to be rediscovered and of course lived, to give the appropriate solutions to pastoral problems.

The Circle reviewed the three Parts of the Relatio post Disceptationem.

1)     Taking into consideration the analysis of the context and the challenges of the present time in which the family is called today to live and to witness, the Synodal Fathers shared all that is written in the text noting, however, how other elements intersept family life posing new questions and eliciting suggestions that touch the conscience. Stressed in particular was how the phenomenon of migrations splits families with the consequences that can easily be imagined. Stressed, moreover, was how the advent of bio-technologies has reduced the family to becoming a sort of experimental “campus” with ethical and educational implications that have no easy solution.

Synod14: French Relatio Texts, Groups A, B
Vatican City,  October 17, 2014

Relatio – Circulus Gallicus “A”
Moderator: H. E. Cardinal Robert SARAH
Reporter: H. E. Monsignor Francois-Xavier DUMORTIER, S.J.

I would like to present this report in five parts:

-          some general considerations

-          in regard to Part II

-          in regard to Part III – Some reflections in conclusion.

1. Some General Considerations

I think I can say, on behalf of all those who took part in this Circle, that the very open, simple and fraternal character of the meetings was much appreciated, lived in simplicity with a very strong sense of our responsibility, and in mutual trust. This made possible intense work, as we were not limited to writing amendments but we suggested a new formulation in several key places of the text.

I think I must also express the emotion and confusion caused by the diffusion of a document that we regarded as a simple – though very useful – working document, hence provisional. What we have experienced, namely the counter-productive dimension of this diffusion, now makes us feel the duty to evaluate, with care, the causes and consequences of an event that, in sowing perplexities and questions, has not helped reflection.

We have been exposed to the plurality and diversity of ecclesial situations. All the local Churches are not equally concerned in the same way or touched by the problems raised. Furthermore, conscious of this reality, we hope that a certain autonomy will be given to the local Churches in the search for answers to their pastoral concerns.

Finally, we realized in our works the importance of real vigilance and rigor in the use of the words we use – such as the terms couple, marriage, individual or person.

Synod14: Cardinal Marx Calls for Individual Situations to Be Taken Seriously
Vatican City,  October 17, 2014

During a briefing at the Holy See Press Office this afternoon, Father Federico Lombardi, German Cardinal Reinhard Marx, Msgr. Paul Pontier, and Spanish laywoman llva Myriam Hoyos Castaneda spoke on the continuing work of the Synod of Bishops.

Cardinal Marx noted that the debate was “intense,” but "overall there was a desire to find a common road.”

During his opening remarks, Fr. Lombardi said that as the end of the synod approaches, a final report will be released tomorrow.

“Individual situations are to be taken seriously, not everything is in black and white,” said Cardinal Marx.

ZENIT asked the German prelate whether it is feasible to reach a comprehensive document including the vast discussions over the course of the week. “As you said, not everything can be found in a final document,” he said, while noting that the grand majority of the discussions will be.

Noting that while it is impossible to incorporate everything, he underscored, the "need to bring everything to a common denominator, to respect all views.”

Card Marx: Pope is seeking input to take Church forward
2014-10-17 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) How to bring together Church doctrine with the pressing pastoral concerns of its leaders. That’s the dilemma that participants at the Synod of Bishops on the Family have been wrestling with over the past two weeks and it was also the focus of the daily press briefing for journalists on Friday.  To share some of the latest developments from behind the doors of the Synod Hall, Fr Lombardi was joined by Cardinal Reinhard Marx, head of the German bishops conference, by Archbishop Georges Pontier, head of the French bishops conference and by Colombian lawyer, Dr Ilva Hoyos Castaneda, one of the lay experts at the Synod....

How can Church leaders from different continents bridge their cultural differences, especially on the most sensitive issues of morality and sexuality? How can Catholics engage in constructive dialogue  between deeply held beliefs and secular government policies? And how can they uphold Church teaching on marriage and the family while sharing in the daily struggles of people in so-called “irregular situations”?

Cardinal Marx from Munich noted that in Germany many committed Catholics are asking how the Church can be more inclusive of those who are divorced and remarried or living in homosexual relationships. Exclusion is not the language of the Church, he said, insisting that Catholics must move away from a “black and white…all or nothing” vocabulary. While there are significantly different perspectives at the Synod, according to a bishops’ cultural experiences or personal encounters, the cardinal said Pope Francis is seeking input that can take the Church forward, open new doors and discover new possibilities for bringing the Gospel to men and women today. The Pope did not invite us to two Synods, he remarked with a smile,  to hear us simply repeat what we’ve always been saying!

Card Napier: Synod document highlights all main concerns
2014-10-17 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Cardinal Wilfrid Fox Napier, Archbishop of Durban in South Africa, is one of the bishops participating in the Extraordinary Assembly of the  Synod of Bishops on the Family that is coming to a close in the Vatican.

He  is also one of those appointed to the group drafting a final document for the Synod for submission to Pope Francis by Sunday.

The document in question is the result of the revisions, done  by the small working groups, of the “relatio post disceptationem”  released at the end of the first week of the 14-day Synod.

In a conversation with Vatican Radio's Linda Bordoni, Cardinal Napier spoke of how the Synod has been an occasion to listen to differing ideas and concerns from across the world, and of how a climate of frank and open discussion has given life to a working document that reflects the core issues that have been addressed…

Cardinal Napier says that “Unlike past synods, this one was more ‘orchestrated’ in the good sense of the word, in that people were asked to identify the area of the ‘instrumentum laboris’ they were going to speak on, and in what language group they wanted to be in” allowing for excellent organization and coordination. This – he said – made things much easier to follow.

Another relevant detail – Napier pointed out - was the tone set right from the beginning by Pope Francis when he asked his brother bishops to speak out “openly, honestly and with humility”. That happened, he said, and “I had never been in a Synod where there was such a good atmosphere”.

Then – he says – “came the publication of the ‘relatio’ and this was not to the liking of many Synod Fathers who were objecting that what was said by one or two people was largely presented (and was certainly being taken up by the media) as if it was the considered opinion of the whole synod. And that make people very angry”.

Pope Paul VI : of miracle and relics
2014-10-17 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio ) Pope Paul VI is to be beatified on Sunday October 19 by Pope Francis, thirty-six years after his death. In May this year Pope Francis had signed a decree to confirm that a miracle attributed to the intercession of this twentieth century pope had been recognised and that this beatification would take place during the concluding Mass of the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops of  the family. The Pope emeritus Benedict XVI, who was created cardinal by Paul VI, will most likely be present at this event.

There’s even a hymn composed for the occasion Father Marrazzo  specified as he held up the photograph chosen to mark the beatification. A photograph in which Paul VI stands with his arms outstretched. He's taken standing on the ‘San Pietrini’ as Rome’s cobblestones are called. A detail meant to symbolise this  twentieth century  pope’s evangelising mission, that idea of his that all roads no longer led to Rome, that the time had come to bring the papacy to the people.
