Pope Francis arrives in Sri Lanka to thunderous welcome
2015-01-13 Vatican Radio

Pope Francis has just begun his Apostolic Visit to Sri Lanka. Radio Vatican's envoy, Fr. Louis Xystus Jerome sent us this report:

The moment he alighted from the flight, a boy and a girl welcomed the Holy Father with a garland of flowers – white and yellow in colour, signifying the colours of the Vatican.

Then the new President of Sri Lanka, Maithripala Sirisena and his wife welcomed him, followed by Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith and other dignitaries. As the Holy Father was walking along the red carpet, a baby elephant was there to welcome him. Children dressed in traditional attire representing different religions waved miniature flags of the Vatican and Sri Lanka. Dancers on either side of the red carpet were performing traditional dances.

When the Holy Father along with the President took the podium, anthems of the Vatican and Sri Lanka were played. During these anthems, the soldiers saluted the Holy Father.

In the video, the plane arrives and positions itself by the red carpet at the 5:00 time marker.

Pope Francis in Sri Lanka: encounter, encouragement, prayer
2015-01-13 Vatican Radio

( Vatican Radio) Pope Francis arrived in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on Tuesday morning, at the beginning of a week-long visit to Asia that will see him in both Sri Lanka and the Philippines. The Holy Father arrived to pomp and circumstance: traditional dancers, a children’s choir performing an especially composed hymn to mark the visit, as well as the execution of the anthems of the Holy See and Sri Lanka by the military band, along with a 21-gun salute.

The newly-elected and installed President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Maithripala Sirisena, offered official words of greeting to Pope Francis, thanking him for the visit and asking his blessing upon himself and his whole nation and people:

It is indeed significant that Your Holiness has commenced this apostolic journey to Asia with a visit to Sri Lanka. Your visit is also particularly significant to me personally, as I have been elected to the office of President only few days ago. The visit of Your Holiness gives me an opportunity to receive your blessings as I commence my term of office.

Pope: religion must never be abused in the cause of war
2015-01-13 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis underlined the significance and urgency of interreligious and ecumenical dialogue in a nation, like Sri Lanka, that is undergoing a process of reconciliation after civil war.

Speaking on the first full day of his apostolic journey to Sri Lanka, Pope Francis addressed an interreligious and ecumenical gathering and reaffirmed the Church’s deep and abiding respect for other religions.

To the spiritual leaders present at the gathering, the Pope said “at this moment of your nation’s history (…)  May the growing spirit of cooperation between the leaders of the various religious communities find expression in a commitment to put reconciliation among all Sri Lankans at the heart of every effort to renew society and its institutions”.

“For the sake of peace” the Pope said, “religious beliefs must never be allowed to be abused in the cause of violence and war.  We must be clear and unequivocal in challenging our communities to live fully the tenets of peace and coexistence found in each religion, and to denounce acts of violence when they are committed”.

Pope's Message to Meeting of European Bishops' Conferences
Rome,  January 13, 2015

Here is a translation of the Holy Father’s message to the participants at the meeting of the Presidents of the Doctrinal Commissions of the European Episcopal Conferences (Esztergom, Hungary, January 13-15, 2015).
* * *
Dear Brothers in the Episcopate,

On the occasion of the meeting of the Presidents of the Doctrinal Commissions of the European Episcopal Conferences with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith at Esztergom, in the religious heart of Hungary, between January 13 and 15, 2015, I wish to transmit to you my cordial greeting.

“I thank Cardinal Gerhard Muller, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, for this timely initiative that emphasises the importance of the local Episcopates, and in particular the Doctrinal Commissions, in their responsibility for the unity and integrity of the faith as well as its transmission to the younger generations. As I wrote in my Apostolic Exhortation 'Evangelii Gaudium', resuming the teaching of the dogmatic Constitution 'Lumen Gentium' of Vatican Council II, 'Episcopal conferences are in a position to contribute in many and fruitful ways to the concrete realisation of the collegial spirit'. (n. 33).

Vatican's Doctrinal Congregation Meeting With Doctrinal Commission of Europe's Bishops
Vatican City,  January 13, 2015

The presidents of the European Episcopal Conferences and the superiors of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith began today three days of meetings in Esztergom, Hungary.

By the Instruction of 23 February 1967, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, on behalf of Blessed Pope Paul VI, had asked the Episcopal Conferences to institute an internal Doctrinal Commission, as a advisory organ for the same Episcopal Conferences and for the individual bishops in their concern for matters of doctrine of the faith.

To strengthen collaboration between the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Doctrinal Commissions, in 1982 it was decided to periodically gather together the presidents of the aforementioned Commissions at a continental level.

One of the original characteristics of these meetings was the fact that the superiors of the Congregation travel to the various continents, thus underlining the importance of local and regional issues and their responsibility in facing doctrinal questions.

Sri Lanka priest: Canonization Mass had a "beautiful atmosphere"
14/01/2015 11:44

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Wednesday celebrated the Mass of Canonization for St. Joseph Vaz in Colombo, on the second day of his apostolic trip to Sri Lanka. Officials estimated over 500,000 people attended the Mass.

“I was there as a minor seminarian when Pope John Paul II came [in 1995], and it was also a very grand event. There were a lot of people, but I didn’t see the Galle Face Green fully packed, but this time it was fully packed,” said Father Anselm Shiran, who serves in the Media Secretariat for the Papal Visit.

Pope Francis: Marian Prayer at the Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu
14/01/2015 10:38

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis arrived at the Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu, Wednesday, where he greeted over 500,000 faithful who had gathered to hear him speak about the importance of the shrine during the almost three decades long civil war. The shrine in the northwest of the island is an importanat place of pilgrimage for people of the different ethnicand religious communities in Sri Lanka, and is seen as symbol of reconciliation in the post-conflict period.

In his words at the shrine, Pope Francis said just as Mary never left the side of her Son on the Cross, so she never leaves the side of her suffering Sri Lankan children as they seek to return to a peaceful existence. Through the intercession of Oue Lady of Madhu, he prayed that all people may find inspiration and strength to build a future of reconcilliation, justice and peace in the country.

Fr Lombardi on positive impact of Pope's visit to Sri Lanka
2015-01-14 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Travelling with Pope Francis on his pastoral visit to Sri Lanka and the Philippines this week is the head of the Holy See press office, Fr Federico Lombardi. He talked to our colleague and correspondent for this trip, Fr Louis Xystus Jerome, about his impressions of the first events on the Pope’s agenda following his arrival in Colombo on Tuesday….

Fr Lombardi said the first day of the visit was a very positive surprise for him as he had not expected such a wonderful reception for the Pope. He said the atmosphere with the new president, following the peaceful elections in Sri Lanka, is “very positive with expectations of something new in the sense of reconciliation” and the rights of minorities. The Pope, he continued, brings encouragement and inspiration, so that the president is right when he says the visit is also a blessing for him at the very beginning of his mission.

Fr. Lombardi and the Francis effect on Sri Lankans
14/01/2015 19:43

(Vatican Radio) Jesuit Father Louis Jerome is currently in Sri Lanka reporting on the first leg of the Apostolic journey of Pope Francis to Asia which takes him  to this island nation and then on to the Philippines on Thursday 15th of January.

At the end of the second day of this visit on January14th, Father Jerome asked his fellow Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi who heads the Vatican Press Office to highlight some of the events of the Pope’s second day there.

Father Lombardi began by shining the spotlight on the canonisation mass of seventeenth century Oratorian Father Joseph Vaz which he described as the most important event of the day at a pastoral level. Father Vaz he said, is a model of evangelisation, who served the poor, the sick and more broadly healed the wounds of the people. Striking on this occasion he went on to say was the importance the Catholics present paid to the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

In this interview  Father Lombardi also highlighted the second moment of the day at the Marian Shrine of Madhu which he described as the most touching of the events on Tuesday from his personal point of view. It was he says a moment of prayerful devotion attended by over 300.000 people. One during which Pope Francis seemed visibly at ease and very ‘happy’ to be in this Marian shrine, the Mother of God he added is very near to his heart. Furthermore during this celebration attended by Sri Lankans from various linguistic groups the overall impression he remarked,  was one of unity and harmony. And the presence there of Buddhist monks, enhanced the overall atmosphere of sincere reconciliation and love.

Pope Francis says there are limits to freedom of expression
2015-01-15 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Speaking about the Paris terror attacks, Pope Francis said on Thursday that there are limits to freedom of expression, especially when it insults or ridicules someone’s faith.  His comments came during a wide-ranging press conference with journalists accompanying him on his flight from Sri Lanka to the Philippines to start the second and final leg of his journey to Asia.

During the press conference, Pope Francis was asked by a French journalist about the relationship between freedom of religion and freedom of expression.  He replied saying that both are "fundamental human rights" and stressed that killing in the name of God “is an aberration.”. But he said there were limits to that freedom of expression.  By way of example he referred to Alberto Gasparri who organizes the papal trips and was standing by his side on the plane. The Pope said if “his good friend Dr Gasparri” says a curse word against his mother, he can “expect a punch”, and at that point he gestured with a pretend punch towards him, saying: “It’s normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others.  You cannot make fun of the faith of others.”

Pope Francis also spoke about climate change, saying he doesn’t know if human activity “is the only cause” of this but added that it is “man who has slapped nature in the face.” Humans, he went on, have “exploited nature too much” and he referred to his forthcoming encyclical on ecology, saying he hopes the document will encourage negotiators at a climate change meeting in Paris to make “courageous decisions” to protect God’s creation.

During the press conference, the Pope also spoke about his priorities for his pastoral visit to the Philippines, saying the focus of his message will be the plight of the poor, those who suffered during the 2013 typhoon and those who “face so many injustices, social, spiritual, existential.”

Pope Francis to canonize evangelizer of the Wild West

Vatican City, Jan 15, 2015 / 05:24 am (CNA/EWTN News).- In a surprise addition to his fall 2015 trip to the U.S., Pope Francis is planning to canonize the founder of California's first missions, Bl. Junipero Serra.

"In September, God willing, I will canonize Junipero Serra in the United States," declared Pope Francis aboard Sri Lankan Air Flight UL4111 on the way to Manila.

Bl. Serra, a Franciscan priest, lived in what is now California in the 1700s. A Spanish-born missionary, he founded the first nine of 21 eventual missions in California. He worked tirelessly with the Native Americans, and is said to have baptized more than 6,000 people, and confirmed 5,000.

"He was the evangelizer of the west in the United States," Pope Francis beamed.

Press Office Official Clarifies Pope's Words on Freedom of Speech, Respect
Rome,  January 15, 2015

Basilian Father Thomas Rosica, the CEO of Canada's Salt and Light network, serves as the English language assistant to the Holy See Press Office.

Regarding the Pope's words on the flight today from Sri Lanka to the Philippines, about freedom of speech and the attacks in Paris, Fr. Rosica released the following clarification:

Pope Francis was asked by a French journalist about the relationship between freedom of religion and freedom of expression.  The Pope replied that both are "fundamental human rights" and stressed that killing in the name of God “is an aberration.” But he said there were limits to that freedom of expression.  By way of example he referred to his close colleague and organizer of Papal trips, Dr. Alberto Gasparri, who was standing next to the Holy Father on the plane.

The Pope's expression is in no way intended to be interpreted as a justification for the violence and terror that took place in Paris last week.  The Pope's words about Dr. Gasbarri were spoken colloquially and in a friendly, intimate matter among colleagues and friends on the journey.  His words mean that there are limits to humor and satire particularly in the ways that we speak about matters of faith and belief. Pope Francis' response might be similar to something each of us has felt when those dearest to us are insulted or harmed. The Pope's free style of speech, especially in situations like the press conference must be taken a face value and not distorted or manipulated.  The Pope has spoken out clearly against the terror and violence that occurred in Paris and in other parts of the world. Violence begets violence.  Pope Francis has not advocated violence with his words on the flight.

Pope Francis arrives in the Philippines for visit focused on mercy and compassion
15/01/2015 10:09

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has arrived in Manila, the Filipino capital, for the second leg of his pastoral visit to Asia. After a six and a half hour flight from the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo, the papal plane was greeted by cheering, singing and dancing crowds as it touched down on Thursday morning at an air base close to the international airport in Manila named after the assassinated Filipino leader 'Ninoy' Aquino. Francis is the third pontiff to visit the Philippines, known as the Catholic heartland of Asia, following two trips by Pope John Paul and one by Pope Paul VI in November 1970.

The central theme of this second leg of the visit is ‘mercy and compassion’ and among the most eagerly awaited moments will be a trip on Saturday to the central city of Tacloban, nearly 600 kilometres southeast of Manila, which was hardest hit by a typhoon in November 2013 that left over seven thousand three hundred people dead or missing. Pope Francis will celebrate an open air Mass at Tacloban airport, bless a new centre for the poor named after him and have lunch with survivors of Typhoon Haiyan, or Yolanda as it was known in the Philippines. He’ll also meet with priests, seminarians and religious men and women in the Cathedral of the Transfiguration in the nearby town of Palo which was also devastated by the violent storm.

Pope Francis: Philippines' 500 years of Christianity can inspire more good

Manila, Philippines, Jan 15, 2015 / 08:06 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis praised Philippines Catholics’ strong faith and challenged them to continue to let the Christian message bear fruit, noting the upcoming 500th anniversary of Christianity’s arrival in Philippines.

“It is my hope that this important anniversary will point to its continuing fruitfulness and its potential to inspire a society worthy of the goodness, dignity and aspirations of the Filipino people,” he said Jan. 16.

Pope Francis travelled to the Philippines Jan. 15 after spending three days in Sri Lanka as part of his second Asian pilgrimage as pope. Catholic influence is strong in the Philippines, where 86 percent of its 98.4 million people identify as Catholic.

Philippines President Benigno Aquino, in office since 2010, met with Pope Francis for about an hour before the Pope’s public remarks to a large crowd of diplomats, public authorities and others gathered at the Presidential Palace in Manila.

The Holy Father said he admired the virtues of “heroic strength, faith and resilience” that Filipinos displayed in the aftermath of the disastrous Typhoon Haiyan, known locally as Typhoon Yolanda. The storm killed thousands of people and left hundreds of thousands homeless in December 2013.

“Those virtues, rooted not least in the hope and solidarity instilled by Christian faith, gave rise to an outpouring of goodness and generosity, especially on the part of so many of the young,” he said. “At great sacrifice, they gave of their time and resources, creating networks of mutual help and working for the common good.”

Pope Francis' full homily to Bishops, Priests, Religious and Seminarians in Manila

Manila, Philippines, Jan 15, 2015 / 08:24 pm (CNA).- Pope Francis' Homily at Manila's Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral during Holy Mass for Bishops, Priests, Religious and Seminarians Jan. 16.

"Do you love me?… Tend my sheep" (Jn 21:15-17). Jesus’ words to Peter in today’s Gospel are the first words I speak to you, dear brother bishops and priests, men and women religious, and young seminarians. These words remind us of something essential. All pastoral ministry is born of love. All consecrated life is a sign of Christ’s reconciling love. Like Saint Therese, in the variety of our vocations, each of us is called, in some way, to be love in the heart of the Church.

I greet all of you with great affection. And I ask you to bring my affection to all your elderly and infirm brothers and sisters, and to all those who cannot join us today. As the Church in the Philippines looks to the fifth centenary of its evangelization, we feel gratitude for the legacy left by so many bishops, priests and religious of past generations. They labored not only to preach the Gospel and build up the Church in this country, but also to forge a society inspired by the Gospel message of charity, forgiveness and solidarity in the service of the common good. Today you carry on that work of love. Like them, you are called to build bridges, to pasture Christ’s flock, and to prepare fresh paths for the Gospel in Asia at the dawn of a new age.

Tagle to Pope: Music, faith secret of Filipino resilience

WELCOME. Pope Francis gives Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle a warm embrace at the Manila Cathedral during the Holy Mass. Rappler screengrab

MANILA, Philippines – "Bien venuto!" Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, warmly welcomed Pope Francis to the Manila Metropolitan Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception that has survived fire and war.

"Now it is open and it warmly welcomes you. This cathedral has been razed to the ground many times but it refuses to disappear. It boldly rises from the ruins just like the Filipino people," Tagle said on Friday, January 16. The Cardinal delivered his message of gratitude before the concluding rite of the Mass.

"We bishops, priests, religious men and women have seen and lived the suffering, but also the determination of our people. We are afflicted every way possible but we are not crushed," Tagle said, drawing a parallelism between the cathedral and the Filipino people.

What is the secret of the resilience of the Filipino people? Tagle said Jesuit historian Horacio dela Costa provided some answers. Dela Costa, according to Tagle, said the Filipino has "two treasures" and "two wealths – music and faith."

Pope Francis makes unscheduled visit to Manila street children
2015-01-16 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis made an unscheduled stop at a center for street children in Manila Friday shortly after celebrating mass in the Filipino capital.  Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi confirmed that the Pope visited a home for street children run by the ANAK-Tnk charitable foundation.  Fr. Lombardi said the Pope spent almost a half an hour with some 320 children who celebrated his visit at the centre with songs and dance, hugs and an exchange of brief words.

Fr. Lombardi said the children were gathered in the centre’s courtyard for their meeting with Pope Francis.  “It was a very moving moment,” said Fr. Lombardi.  The children had prepared small gifts for the Holy Father, including a wooden image of Our Lady – a copy of the one displayed in the centre’s chapel, a photo of the Holy Sacrament amid rubbish for the adoration of group of scavengers, and a mosaic made by a child out of bits of colored paper.

The centre is run by Fr. Mathieu, a French priest, and is home to 20 children while many of the others gathered to greet the Pope are assisted by the foundation in other homes.

Pope Francis struck by untiring energy of Filipinos
16/01/2015 16:36

(Vatican Radio) The head of the Catholic Church in the Philippines, Cardinal Luis Tagle told reporters that the Pope was struck by how energetic the Filipino people are and how they don’t get tired. Cardinal Tagle’s revelation came at a press briefing presided over by himself and the Director of the Holy See’s Press office Father Federico Lombardi where both men provided comments on Friday’s papal events in the Philippines. Cardinal Tagle said the Pope exclaimed to him,  “Wow, the Filipinos are energetic, you don’t get tired.” He said he responded to this papal observation by explaining: “We are a youthful people.” This prompted the Pope to remark that this youthfulness represents “a promise” and declared that “the future of the Church is here in Asia.”

Speaking about the Pope’s earlier unscheduled stop to visit a shelter for street kids, Cardinal Tagle described it as a “beautiful” event, a “really moving encounter.”  “You could see the Holy Father was in his element,” he said, and told the reporters that they could see “tears” beginning to well up in the Pope’s eyes during his time with the children.

Pope Francis to families: be examples of holiness, prayer
2015-01-16 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio)  Pope Francis told families in the Philippines Friday that they should take time to rest and to pray together and to be examples of holiness.  On the second day of his five day trip to the Asian archipelago, Pope Francis told tens of thousands of people gathered for a meeting with families that the world “needs good and strong families” to overcome threats of poverty, materialism, destructive lifestyles, and those caused by separation due to migration.

In his discourse, delivered at the “Mall of Asia Arena,” Manila’s principle sports arena, the Pope said “the Philippines needs holy and loving families to protect the beauty and truth of the family in God’s plan.”
