2016-10-12 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Wednesday remembered the Feast Day of Pope St. John XXIII, which was celebrated on Tuesday, during his special remarks to the young, the sick and newlyweds before his final blessing during his General Audience.

“Yesterday we celebrated the memory of St. John XXIII,” – Pope Francis said – “Invoke his heavenly intercession, dear young people, to imitate the gentleness of his paternal love; pray to him in moments of the cross and in suffering, dear infirm, to face difficulties with the same meekness; and learn from him, dear newlyweds, the art of educating children with tenderness and by example.”

Pope Francis calls for ceasefire in Syria
2016-10-12 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis renewed his appeal for peace in Syria on Wednesday. Addressing pilgrims and tourists gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the weekly General Audience, Pope Francis said, “I want to emphasize and reiterate my solidarity with all victims of inhuman conflict in Syria.” Pope Francis went on to say, “It is with a sense of urgency that I renew my appeal, begging, with all my strength, those responsible, that steps be taken toward an immediate ceasefire, one imposed and respected at least for the time necessary to allow the evacuation of civilians, especially children, who are still trapped under cruel bombardment.”

Russian-led airstrikes resumed over the past 24 hours, concentrating on targets within the besieged city of Aleppo.

Pope: The Christian is always on the path to do good
2016-10-13 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Christians always feel the need to be forgiven and are on their way to an encounter with God. Those were the words of Pope Francis Thursday morning at Mass at the  Casa Santa Marta. The Pope painted a portrait of the good Christian who, he said, must always feel the blessing of the Lord and go on to do good.

"The Christian is blessed by the Father, who is God" , Pope Francis said in his homily from St Paul's Letter to the Ephesians, contained in the first reading on Thursday. Focusing on the "traits of this blessing", he noted that "the Christian is a" person chosen.

The Father chose us one by one, he loves us and gave us a name

God calls us one by one, "not as an oceanic crowd."  The Holy Father reiterated, “we have been chosen, expected by the Father:”

"Think of a couple, when expecting a baby: 'How will it be? And how will he or she smile? And talk? 'But I dare say that we, each of us, has been dreamed of by the Father as a father and a mother dreams of their awaited baby. And this gives you great security. The Father wanted you, not the mass of people, no, you, you, you. Each of us. And 'the foundation, is the basis of our relationship with God. We speak of a Father who loves us, who chose us, who gave us a name. "

Pope Francis to Lutheran pilgrims: seek unity through charity
2016-10-13 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis received some 1 thousand pilgrims in the Vatican on Thursday – most of them German Lutherans – here in Rome as part of ecumenical preparations for the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Lutheran reformation. In his remarks to the gathering, the Pope encouraged his listeners to seek unity through charity, saying “In being of service to the most needy we experience already that we are united: it is the mercy of God that unites us.”

Pope Francis also spoke in his address about how Catholics and Lutherans are part of the same body of Christ.

Pope Francis calls for the protection of child migrants
2016-10-13 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has made an urgent call for action to be taken against those who profit from the exploitation of child migrants.

In a strongly worded message released ahead of the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, the Pope has focused on the plight and the rights of the growing numbers of child migrants who are the most vulnerable in the hands of human traffickers
.

Introducing his message with the words of the evangelists “whoever receives one such child in my name receives me”, Pope Francis says the Gospel also speaks of the responsibility and of the evil of those who work against mercy by harming young girls and boys whom today, he said  “are led into prostitution or into the mire of pornography; who are enslaved as child labourers or soldiers; who are caught up in drug trafficking and other forms of criminality; who are forced to flee from conflict and persecution, risking isolation and abandonment”.

So, drawing attention to the reality of child migrants – especially the ones who are alone – the Pope
asks everyone to take care of the young, “who in a threefold way are defenceless: they are children, they are foreigners, and they have no means to protect themselves”.

USCCB President Says the Gospel Serves the Common Good, Not Political Agendas
October 13, 2016

A statement from Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Kentucky
President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

WASHINGTON—At this important time in our nation's history, I encourage all of us to take a moment to reflect on one of the founding principles of our republic – the freedom of religion. It ensures the right of faith communities to preserve the integrity of their beliefs and proper self-governance.  There have been recent reports that some may have sought to interfere in the internal life of the Church for short-term political gain. If true, this is troubling both for the well-being of faith communities and the good of our country.

In our faith and our Church, Christ has given us a precious gift. As Catholics, we hold onto our beliefs because they come to us from Jesus, not a consensus forged by contemporary norms. The Gospel is offered for all people for all times. It invites us to love our neighbor and live in peace with one another.  For this reason, the truth of Christ is never outdated or inaccessible. The Gospel serves the common good, not political agendas.

I encourage my fellow Catholic brothers and sisters, and all people of good will, to be good stewards of the precious rights we have inherited as citizens of this country. We also expect public officials to respect the rights of people to live their faith without interference from the state. When faith communities lose this right, the very idea of what it means to be an American is lost.

Politicians, their staffs and volunteers should reflect our best aspirations as citizens.  Too much of our current political discourse has demeaned women and marginalized people of faith. This must change.  True to the best hopes of our founding fathers, we are confident that we can and will do better as a nation.

Pope: hypocrisy is a kind of spiritual schizophrenia
2016-10-14 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis urged Christians to always tell the truth to avoid succumbing to hypocrisy which he described as a kind of spiritual schizophrenia that makes us say many things but without putting them into practice. He was speaking at his Mass on Friday morning celebrated in the chapel of the Santa Marta residence.

Good and bad Leaven: my grandmother's Carnival pastries

In his homily at the Mass, the Pope took his cue from the day’s readings to reflect on the dangers of hypocrisy by warning Christians against the leaven of the Pharisees. Noting that there’s a good leaven and a bad leaven, he said the former builds the kingdom of God whereas the latter only creates the appearance of the Kingdom of God.

Good leaven, said Pope Francis, always rises and grows in a consistent and substantial manner and becomes a good bread, a good pastry. But as he went on to warn, bad leaven does not grow well and he used an anecdote from his own childhood to explain the concept.

Pope visits residential home for children in Rome
2016-10-14 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Friday visited children in Rome’s “SOS Village,” a residential complex that cares for children coming from difficult personal, family or social backgrounds. His surprise visit there was part of his “Friday of Mercy” initiatives that have seen him perform a concrete gesture of mercy on one Friday every month during this Jubilee Year.

During his visit to the centre, the Pope was given a tour of the grounds that include a small football pitch and a playground. The children living there also showed him their rooms and their toys and he listened to them talking about their personal stories. Before returning to the Vatican, Pope Francis also had an afternoon snack with the children.

Pope Francis, Pope emeritus Benedict XVI honor Bartholomew I
13/10/2016 16:20

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has written the preface to the book “Bartholomew: Apostle and Visionary,” published by the U.S.-based Thomas Nelson. The book is being published to mark the 25th anniversary of the election of the Ecumenical Patriarch, who is the “first among equals” of the Orthodox Church.

Pope emeritus Benedict XVI also contributed a chapter to the volume
.

The October 12 edition of L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, had the texts written by Pope Francis (available here) and Pope emeritus Benedict XVI (available here) in their entirety.

“The Church of Rome and the Church of Constantinople are united by a profound and long-standing bond, which not even centuries of silence and misunderstanding have been able to sever,” – Pope Francis wrote – “This bond is exemplified by the relationship between those to whom tradition attributes the foundation of our respective Churches, namely, the holy apostles Peter and Andrew, two brothers in the flesh, but above all, two disciples of the Lord Jesus, who together believed in him, followed him, and ultimately shared his destiny on the cross, in the one and same hope of serving the coming of his kingdom.

The anniversary of the election of Patriarch Bartholomew I will occur on November 2.

Papal charity office donates funds to Hurricane victims in Caribbean
2016-10-14 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis is sending $100,000 in initial emergency funding to help the people of the Caribbean region, particularly Haiti, devastated by Hurricane Matthew earlier this month. The powerful storm killed more than 1,000 people and demolished buildings and infrastructure, leaving thousands homeless.

The papal donation, made through the Pope’s charitable office, Cor Unum, will be distributed by the apostolic nunziature to the local Church dioceses which suffered the greatest losses in the flooding.  In a note from Cor Unum, the pontifical council says the aid provided by the Pope is meant to be “a first and immediate concrete expression” of the Holy Father’s “spiritual closeness and paternal encouragement” to the people and territories hardest hit by the disaster.

Pope Francis to proclaim seven new Saints
2016-10-15 Vatican Radio

Pope Francis pays his homage to the remains of child-martyr José Sanchez del Rio, in Morelia's Cathedral Mexico

(Vatican Radio) On the morning of Sunday, October 15, Pope Francis presides over Holy Mass for the canonization of seven new Saints.

Two of the new Saints are martyrs:  José Sánchez del Río, a 14-year-old boy who was killed in 1928 in Mexico during the “Cristero” struggle which opposed the government's anti-Catholic and anticlerical policies. Under torture José refused to disown his faith; a handwritten note addressed to his mother and found on his dead body read: “I promise that in heaven I will prepare a place for all of you. Your José dies defending the Catholic faith for the love of Christ the King and Our Lady of Guadalupe”.

ROME (CNS) -- Jesuit Father Arturo Sosa Abascal, 67, a member of the Jesuits' Venezuelan province, was elected the first non-European superior general of the Society of Jesus.

The 212 voting delegates to the Jesuit general congregation elected Father Sosa Oct. 14. He succeeds Father Adolfo Nicolas, 80, who had asked to resign because of his age.

Pope Francis was informed of the election of Father Sosa before the Jesuits announced it publicly.

The election came after four days of prayer, silence and quiet one-on-one conversations among the voting delegates, who were chosen to represent the more than 16,000 Jesuits around the world.

Reacting to his election, Father Sosa told Vatican Radio, "I have the feeling of needing great help; now the great challenge begins."
