Be the first to take a step for peace, pope says at Mass with victims

VILLAVICENCIO, Colombia (CNS) -- If just one victim of Colombia's civil war forgives his or her aggressor, it can set off a chain reaction of hope for reconciliation and peace, Pope Francis said.

Celebrating Mass Sept. 8 in Villavicencio, a city filled with those who fled their homes during the war and with former fighters trying to start over, Pope Francis pleaded for honesty and courage.

At the beginning of the Mass, he held up two heroic examples of those who gave their lives to "rise up out of the swamp of violence and bitterness": Bishop Jesus Emilio Jaramillo Monsalve of Arauca, who was murdered by Colombian Marxist guerrillas in 1989, and Father Pedro Maria Ramirez, who was killed at the start of the Colombian civil war in 1948.

Pope Francis beatified the two at the Mass, which was celebrated in the middle of a broad field, typical of the area's cattle ranching terrain.

Pope in Colombia prays for victims of Mexico quake and Hurricane Irma
08/09/2017 19:16

Soldiers remove debris from a partly collapsed municipal building after an earthquake in Juchitan, Oaxaca state, Mexico - AP
(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis said he is close to all those suffering the consequences of the devastating earthquake that has struck Mexico and that he is praying for them and for all those affected by Hurricane Irma.

The Pope’s words of vicinity and concern came at the conclusion of a Beatification Mass on Friday in the Colombian town of Villavicencio during his five-day apostolic journey to Colombia.

Decrying the fact that the powerful earthquake that rocked Mexico on Thursday night has caused death and destruction the Pope said he is spiritually close to “those who have lost their lives and to their families”.

He went on to say that he is also following closely the crisis situation caused by Hurricane Irma in the Caribbean region “as it leaves many victims and huge material damage in its wake, while causing thousands of people to be displaced.”

Pope Francis has sent his condolences to the relatives of Cardinal Carlo Caffarra, Archbishop emeritus of Bologna, who died on September 6, 2017, at the age of 79.

In the telegram addressed to, current Archbishop of Bologna, Matteo Maria Zuppi, the Pope said he shares in the suffering of the late cardinal’s loved ones.

“I think affectionately of this dear Brother in the Episcopate, who served the Gospel with joy and loved the Church intensely.”

“I remember with gratitude,” Pope Francis continued, “the generous pastoral work carried out by him.” The Pontiff remembered his work at the John Paul II Pontifical Institute for Studies on Marriage and the Family, and as a ‘zealous pastor.’

The Holy Father prayed the Lord, through the intercession of Mary and Saint Petronius, “will receive His faithful servant and distinguished Pastor in the Heavenly Jerusalem.”

On 'sacred ground' of suffering, pope prays for reconciliation
By Cindy Wooden Catholic News Service
9.8.2017 5:39 PM ET

CNS/Paul Haring
VILLAVICENCIO, Colombia (CNS) -- In a raw, honest prayer service where victims and perpetrators of violence stood under the gaze of a bomb-damaged crucifix, Pope Francis urged Colombians to summon the courage to make peace.

Symbolically presiding over the event Sept. 8 was what remained of a crucifix from the church in Bojaya, an image of Jesus whose arms and legs were blown off in 2002 when an improvised homemade mortar launched by rebels crashed through the roof of a church and exploded.

The United Nations was unable to verify the exact number of people killed; some reports say 79 people died, others say 119 people died. All agree that almost half the victims were children.

"I am standing on sacred ground," Pope Francis said at the prayer service, "a land watered by the blood of thousands of innocent victims and by the heart-breaking sorrow of their families and friends."

Following a moving Prayer Meeting for National Reconciliation on September 8, 2017, Pope Francis paused at the Cross of Reconciliation in Parque de los Fundadores of Villavicencio.

The President of the Republic of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos Calderón, about 400 children and a group of indigenous people joined the Holy Father. The children accompanied him to the Cross while a choir performed a traditional song. The monument contains the number of victims of violence that has shaken the nation in recent decades

Pope at Mass in Medellin Colombia: 'Remain steadfast and free in Christ'
09/09/2017 18:30

Pope Francis celebrates Mass in the Enrique Olaya Herrera airport in Medellin, Colombia - AFP

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis celebrated Mass on Saturday at the Enrique Olaya Herrera Airport in Medellín, in both Latin and Spanish, in memory of St. Peter Claver, Jesuit priest, who was an apostle to the African slaves.

In his homily, the Pope reflected on the cost of discipleship.  He said one should not feel secure merely by following certain precepts, prohibitions, and mandates, dispensing oneself from the uncomfortable question: “What would God like us to do?”

Instead, the Holy Father said God wants us to follow Him in such a way as to focus on the essential, to be renewed, and to get involved. He said these are the three attitudes which must form our lives as disciples.

"Missionary disciples", he said, ought to "know how to see, without hereditary short-sightedness; looking at reality with the eyes and heart of Jesus, and only then judging." These, he said, are "disciples who risk, act, and commit themselves."

In conclusion, Pope Francis invited those present to remain steadfast and free in Christ, in such a way that they manifest him in everything they do; take up the path of Jesus with all their strength, know him, allow themselves to be called and taught by him, and proclaim him with great joy.

Pope Francis greets children in Villavicencio, Colombia - AP

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis’ apostolic visits always feature at least one event in a place of suffering, of solidarity, of rebirth.

He always makes sure he spends some precious time with the poorest and the weakest of the world, be they prisoners, disabled adolescents, elderly people, slum-dwellers… In Medellin on Friday he visited the community at Hogar San José: a Jesuit-run home for orphaned children victims of Colombia’s conflict.

The over 300 children cared for by the nuns, lay people and volunteers of the Home come from across the ravaged nation. All of them carry the wounds of violence and abuse.

Pope in Colombia spells out priorities for the clergy
09/09/2017 23:00

Pope Francis in Colombia - REUTERS
(Vatican Radio) Some 12,000 priests, men and women religious, consecrated laypeople and seminarians with their families crowded into Medellin’s “La Macarena” event centre on Friday to listen to Pope Francis’ thoughts, proposals and instructions regarding their ministry.

On the podium, the relics of Saint Mother Laura Montoya, a nun who was the first female Colombian Saint. Canonized by Pope Francis himself in 2013, Mother Laura was a teacher and prolific author who hosted classes in her own home when the 1895 civil war in Colombia forced schools to close.

And in the presence of the relics of this inspiring figure, the Pope put his long text of prepared remarks aside, and engaged with his audience who rose to the occasion reacting enthusiastically to his exhortations and comments.

In a town – Medellin – which used to be the reign of the powerful drug trafficker, Pablo Escobar, Pope Francis pointed his finger against the drug traffickers of today who, he said, continue to destroy the lives of so many young people.

Pope very happy in Colombia says his spokesman
08/09/2017 23:30

The Press Office in Bogota set up for Pope Francis' Apostolic Visit to Colombia - RV
(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis loves being in Colombia. The warm welcome of the people gives him a real “kick” says Greg Burke, papal spokesman and Holy See Press Office Director.

Burke was speaking to Vatican Radio at the end of day three of Francis’ 5-day visit to the nation and after a particularly emotional Prayer Meeting for Reconciliation in Villavicencio.

“I think he’s thrilled to be here” he said: “what he sees is a lot of young people, a lot of joyful people and he feeds off that joy.”

Burke spoke briefly about how special are the intimate moments that take place every evening in front of the nunciature before the Pope retires for the night.

“They are very short, they are organized along different themes” he explained and he recalled the encounter on Thursday evening with a group of disabled children with whom the Pope engaged telling them that “we are all vulnerable” and commenting later: “that was pure theology”.

Regarding Friday’s events focussed on Reconciliation in the town of Villavicencio Burke said they were very important for him as “from day one since his election he has been talking about mercy” and to be able to listen to the stories of the victims at the Prayer Meeting and how they have moved forward was very significant because that is what the Pope is about: “he’s about asking forgiveness of God;  he says we learn to ask forgiveness from others and we learn to grant forgiveness and when he sees that in action, it’s incredibly moving for him”.

Finally commenting on the sometimes rather “exuberant” enthusiasm of the Colombian people who run after the pope-mobile and try to grab him, Burke says “the Pope is totally calm and even gets a kick out of it.'

Pope Francis issues Motu Proprio on liturgical translations
09/09/2017 12:11

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis issued a Motu Proprio on Saturday entitled, “Magnum principium” which refers to the translation of liturgical texts.

A Motu Proprio is a special document, or apostolic letter, issued by the Pope on his own initiative and signed by him.

In the document Pope Francis writes that, taking into account the experience of the Second Vatican Council with regard to liturgical translations, it seemed opportune that some principles handed on since that time, “should be more clearly reaffirmed and put into practice”.

According to the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, the Vatican department responsible for publishing the document, “Magnum principium” alters certain norms of Canon 838 of the Code of Canon Law regarding the translation of liturgical texts into modern languages.

Pope suffers minor injury in Colombia reaching out to the crowd

CARTAGENA, Colombia-Pope Francis suffered a minor accident upon his arrival to Cartagena, the very last stop of his Sept. 6-11 visit to Colombia, but wasn’t deterred and kept on chugging through the day.

As he was riding the Popemobile trying to reach out to one of the tens of thousands waiting for him along the streets, the car moved abruptly, causing the pope to stumble. He hit the left side of his face against the metal bar that holds the glass roof of the vehicle, striking him in the face
.

The blow was strong enough to draw blood, but Vatican spokesman Greg Burke, traveling with the pontiff, told journalists that he’s just fine.

Soon after the injury, which was televised live, Francis received a white handkerchief from one of the members of his security escort. The head of the security team, Italian layman Domenico Gianni, cleaned his eyebrow, signaling that’s where the blood, which stained his white cassock, originated.

Eventually, the motorcade stopped for the pope to receive treatment in private. When he got back in the car, he was sporting a Band-Aid on his eyebrow and a bruise was already visible on his cheekbone.

The accident happened as Francis was riding along the streets of Cartagena, on his way to a shelter for the homeless run by Talitha Kum, an international network of religious sisters who fight against human trafficking.

Pope blesses cornerstones for 2 charity houses in Colombia
10/09/2017 18:30

Pope Francis blesses the cornerstones for two new charity houses in Cartagena, Colombia - AFP
(Vatican Radio)  Pope Francis on Sunday blessed the cornerstones for two houses of charity at St. Francis of Assisi Square in Cartagena and visited the house of a local charity-worker, while on his Apostolic Visit to Colombia.

One cornerstone is destined for the Talitha Kum house for trafficked persons, and the other will serve as the foundation of a Homeless Shelter.

The Holy Father blessed the cornerstones with the following prayer:

“Let us pray. Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of mercy, Who in your Son You have given us an admirable example of charity and through Him you have strongly recommended to us the commandment to love; fill with your blessings these servants of yours, who wish to devote themselves generously to the help of their brothers; so that, in urgent needs, they may serve you faithfully and fully in the person of their neighbor. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen”
