Pope Francis urges Myanmar's youth to be messengers of hope
30/11/2017 07:01

Young Catholics in Myanmar listen to Pope Francis inside St Mary's Cathedral, Yangon, on Thursday - AFP
(Vatican Radio) On the last day of his apostolic journey to Myanmar, Pope Francis celebrated a morning Mass for young people, gathered at St Mary’s Catholic cathedral in central Yangon.

Our correspondent on this papal trip, Philippa Hitchen, was there, talking to the young people and listening to what the pope had to say to them….

It was the last event of this four day visit to Myanmar and it was the one which best captured the hopes of the country, struggling to find its way to becoming a modern, democratic, developed nation.

Multi-ethnic origins

Standing outside the redbrick, colonial-era Cathedral, with its tall twin towers, I chatted with some of the hundreds of young men and women, waiting patiently for the pope to arrive. Most were dressed in the colourful costumes of their different regions, representing the multi-ethnic history of the modern Myanmar. They’re fiercely proud of their origins, history and local cultural traditions. But they also want to be part of a forward-looking, internationally accepted nation that offers job prospects and opportunities to enjoy the same standards of living as their contemporaries in more developed countries.

The Pope’s plane landed at Dhaka’s International Airport at 3:00 pm (10:00 am in Rome).

The President of the Republic of Bangladesh, Abdul Hamid, welcomed the Holy Father on his arrival.

During the welcome ceremony, two children dressed in the country’s typical costumes gave the Pontiff flowers and a jar of earth, which the Pope blessed.

Some political and civil Authorities of Bangladesh were present, as well as a group of faithful and 40 children who danced a traditional dance.

As is usual in the Pontiff’s Apostolic Journeys, he was given military honors and hymns were played. Then the respective delegations were introduced.

With the temperature soaring to almost 30 degrees centigrade, Pope Francis went by car to the National Monument of Martyrs of Savar, a few kilometers from the capital, at around 4:00 pm local time (11:00 am in Rome), after the welcome ceremony in Dhaka’s International Airport.

At the Monument, erected in memory of all those who fought for independence from Pakistan in 1971, during the “War of Liberation,” the Holy Father placed a floral wreath.

On his arrival, Civil Authorities received the Pontiff and accompanied him to the Monument, where the Guard of Honour was present.

Mujibur Rahman, Father of the Nation

The Holy Father signed the Book of Honour and planted a tree in the “Garden of Peace,” before going to the Commemorative Museum of Bangabandhu to pay homage to the “Father of the Nation,” Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Francis arrived there at 4:45 pm local time ((11:45 in Rome), and was received by members of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s family, who was assassinated in 1975.

Bangladesh: Meeting with President Abdul Hamid
Private Discussion at Presidential Palace

Pope Francis talked privately with Abul Hamid, President of the Republic of Bangladesh, a few hours after his arrival in the country, on November 30, 2017.

The President himself received the Pope at the airport of Dhaka, the Bangladeshi capital, where military honors took place in the afternoon. Then their second interview was held in the Presidential Palace, around 5:30 pm local time (12:30 in Rome). When he got out of the car, the Military Secretary received the Holy Father and accompanied him to the Entrance of Honour, where Abdul Hamid was waiting for him.

The Pontiff and the President talked in private in the Credentials Hall, before the traditional exchange of gifts. The Pope gave the President a manuscript of the Apostolic Vatican Library dated 1472. The work in membrane, of a large format (597×427 mm.) contains the eight books of the Geography of Claudio Tolomeo (2nd century AD, in the Latin translation by Iacopo Angeli da Scarperia. One finds there, notably, a description of Asia.

Bangladesh: A Special Place in the Heart of Popes
Support People in Demanding Task to Build Nation
November 30, 2017

© L'Osservatore Romano
“Bangladesh is a young state, yet it has always had a special place in the heart of the Popes, who from the start have expressed solidarity with its people, sought to accompany them in overcoming initial adversities, and supported them in the demanding task of nation-building and development.”

These were the words of Pope Francis as he spoke November 30, 2017, to a gathering of authorities, the diplomatic corps and civic leaders in the Presidential Palace in Dhaka. The meeting took place shortly after his arrival in Bangladesh, where he will be until December 2.

The Holy Father reminded the audience that no country can exist in isolation. He cited the first president of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who the Pope said, “envisioned a modern, pluralistic and inclusive society in which every person and community could live in freedom, peace, and security, with respect for the innate dignity and equal rights of all.”

Pope Francis noted that although Bangladesh has a relatively small number of Catholics, they “seek to play a constructive role in the development of the country, particularly through their schools, clinics, and dispensaries.”  He continued: “The Church appreciates the freedom to practice her faith and to pursue her charitable works, which benefit the entire nation, not least by providing young people, who represent the future of society, with a quality education and a training in sound ethical and human values.”

Although his visit to Bangladesh is addressed primarily to the Catholic community, the Pope said he looks forward to meeting with other groups and is especially anticipating his December 1, 2017, meeting with leaders in Ramna.

“Together we will pray for peace and reaffirm our commitment to work for peace,” he noted. “Bangladesh is known for the harmony that has traditionally existed between followers of the various religions.”

Pope Francis tells bishops to be close to the laity
01/12/2017 16:15

Pope Francis meets the Catholic Bishops of Bangladesh - AP
(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has urged the bishops of Bangladesh to cultivate their relationship with the laity and to be close to them, especially to young people and families who have much to contribute to the Church according to their particular gifts.

The Pope was meeting the nation’s bishops gathered at a Home for Retired Priests in Dhaka on Friday, the penultimate day of an apostolic journey which has taken him to Myanmar and then on to Bangladesh from where he will depart on Saturday evening.

As he often does during occasions such as this, Pope Francis chatted informally with his brother bishops, straying often from his prepared remarks and offering off-the-cuff reflections to highlight some of the main points of his message.

At the heart of his discourse the Pope asked the bishops to show “even greater pastoral closeness to the lay faithful.”

Pope uses word “Rohingya” as he asks them to forgive the world’s indifference

'The presence of God today is also called Rohingya,' Francis told 16 of the refugees who had gathered around him

Pope Francis today asked a group of Rohingya Muslims to forgive the world's indifference to their plight and for the first time on his 6-day South Asia visit used their ethnic title.

“The presence of God today is also called Rohingya,” Francis told sixteeen of them who had gathered around him on a stage at an interfaith gathering. “We are all close to you. And there is little we can do, because your tragedy is very hard and very big. But we make room in our hearts for you. On behalf of all these who have persecuted and hurt you, I ask you for forgiveness.”

In an unscripted comments the Pope explained: “In the Judaeo-Christian tradition God has created man in his image and likeness. We are all this image and also our brothers and sisters,” he said his voice undulating with emotion and asking them to find it in their hearts to 'forgive' what he said was the 'indifference of the world.'

Entering on a rickshaw, the Pope entered a large colourful tent in the garden of the Archbishop of Dhaka’s residence for an event that was designed to showcase inter-religious harmony. Seated close to the front of the stage were a group of Rohingya including Shawkut Ara, a 12-year-old girl who had lost both her parents and Mohammed Ayub, 32, whose three year old son has been killed by the Myanmar military.

Pope Francis addresses interreligious meeting for peace
01/12/2017 12:30

Pope Francis blesses a Rohingya orphan girl during an Interreligious and Ecumenical Meeting for Peace in Dhaka - EPA
(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Friday greeted and blessed a group of  Rohingya Muslim refugees who fled to Bangladesh from neighboring Myanmar.

The moving meeting took place during an Interreligious and Ecumenical Meeting for Peace in the garden of the Archbishop of Dhaka’s residence
.

The meeting, which saw the participation of representatives of different faiths, took place on the second day of the Pope’s Apostolic Journey to Bangladesh.

The 16 Rohingya  - 12 men, two women and two young girls - traveled to Dhaka from Cox's Bazar, the district bordering Myanmar where refugee camps are overflowing with more than 620,000 Rohingya who have fled violence in Myanmar.

One by one, each one of the refugees approached the Pope at the end of the event and through the aid of an interpreter told him their stories and their experiences.

Pope in Bangladesh: ‘You are like the Mustard Seed’
Meeting with 1,500 Religious at Holy Rosary Church, Chittagong
December 2, 2017

© L'Osservatore Romano
“The Catholic community in Bangladesh is small. But you are like the mustard seed that God brings to fruition in His own time.”

These were the words of Pope Francis on December 2, 2017, to around 1,500 priests, men and women religious, consecrated persons, seminarians and novices in the Holy Rosary Church, the cathedral-Church of the archdiocese of Chittagong
.

“I rejoice to see how this seed is growing and to witness first-hand the deep faith which God has given you,” the Holy Father continued. “I think of the dedicated and faithful missionaries who planted and tended this seed of faith for almost five hundred years.

“I will shortly visit the cemetery here and pray for these men and women who so generously served this local Church. As I look out among you, I see missionaries who continue this holy work. I also see many vocations born in this land; they are a sign of the graces with which God is blessing your land. I am particularly pleased by the presence, and the prayers, of the cloistered nuns among us.”

Pope, “Young people, do not wander around without a goal. Keep updating your software of hope”

Wisdom and hope. Joy and courage. Dialogue, with children of other religions and with the elderly, and discernment, to “recognize and reject false promises of happiness”. To the young people of Bangladesh, with whom he has chosen to share the last visit of his apostolic journey in Southeast Asia, Pope Francis offers the coordinates to “go forward in life” in the sense of “journeying” and “not to wander around without a goal”.

Around the Pope, on the bleachers of the Notre Dame College sports field in Dhaka, there are seven thousand boys and girls, not only Bengali and not only Catholics, who welcome him with applause, choirs, songs and traditional dances. In this festive atmosphere, Francis does his usual tour aboard the pope-mobile; then, at the end of the meeting, he blessed the first stone of the new building “Notre Dame University Bangladesh” and a commemorative plaque.

Representing all young people - who are more than a third of the country’s population of about 160 million – a girl, Upasana Ruth Gomes and a boy, Anthony Toranga Norek, both students at Notre Dame College, share their testimonies marked by concerns about an uncertain future. “Holy Father, you understand our struggle! We easily get excited but at the same time we find ourselves confused, depressed, frustrated, we no longer know what direction to take and sometimes we lose ourselves. Often we are so unstable and emotionally vulnerable that our life seems to have no meaning. Seeing the world’s injustices, the disrespect for creation, division within families, ill-treatment and the dangers to which women and children are exposed, we feel really discouraged and powerless.”

Pope concludes apostolic visit to Myanmar, Bangladesh
02/12/2017 15:33

Pope Francis flew back to Rome from Dhaka airport Saturday afternoon, concluding his 21st foreign visit outside of Italy that took him to Myanmar and Bangladesh.

The Pope was given an official farewell at Dhaka airport, where the Minister for Foreign Affairs was present to see him take off on a Bangladesh Airlines aircraft on his flight back to Rome.

‎The Pope was in Myanmar, Nov. 27-30, after which he visited neighbouring Bangladesh, Nov. 30-Dec 2.  ‎While Myanmar’s over 51 million population is nearly 90 percent Buddhist, where Catholics form only 1.2%, in neighbouring Bangladesh Muslims account for nearly 90% of the population, and Catholics less than 1 percent.

The purpose of this 2-nation apostolic visit was not only to confirm the faith of the tiny Catholic communities in the two Asian nations but also to carry Christ’s message of reconciliation, forgiveness, peace and harmony among the people for the common good.  And that is what the logos and themes of the two visits indicated.  The theme of the Pope’s Myanmar visit was “Love and Peace”, and that the Bangladesh, “Harmony and Peace.” The Pope also encouraged ecumenical and interfaith cooperation in order to be a ‎prophetic and healing presence in the life of the nation.‎

In both the nations, the Catholic communities are active, especially in their outreach programmes for the poor and needy, which the Pope commended and encouraged.  Overall the Pope delivered 8 discourses and three homilies, celebrating two Masses in Myanmar and another Mass in Bangladesh with priestly ordination.

Vatican City, Dec 2, 2017 / 06:15 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- In a 58-minute conversation with journalists on his return flight from Bangladesh to Rome on Saturday, Pope Francis discussed the Rohingya people of Burma, evangelization, nuclear warfare, and plans for future travel, among other topics

Here is CNA's full transcript of the Pope's in-flight press conference:

Greg Burke: Thank you, Holy Father. First of all, thanks. You have chosen two interesting countries to visit. Two very different countries but with something in common, that is, in each of these countries is a small but very active Church, full of joy, full of young people and full of the spirit of service for all of society. We certainly have seen a lot, we have learned a lot, but we’re interested also in what you have seen and what you have learned.

Pope Francis: Good evening, if we think of here, or good afternoon if we think of Rome, and thank you so much for your work… as Greg said, two very interesting countries, with very traditional, deep, rich cultures. For this, I think that your work has been very intense. Thank you so much.

Greg Burke: The first question is from Sagrario Ruiz de Apodarca, from Spanish National Radio.

Sagrario Ruiz (Radio Nacional Espanola): Good evening, Holy Father. Thank you. I’m asking the question in Spanish with the permission of my Italian colleagues because I don’t yet trust my Italian, but if you would answer in Italian, that would be perfect. The crisis of the Rohingya has tempered a large part of this trip. Yesterday, they were called by name finally in Bangladesh. Do you wish you would have done the same in Burma, named them with this word, Rohingya? And, what did you feel yesterday when you asked forgiveness?
