Card. Parolin: 2018 year of youth and family for Pope Francis
11 January 2018, 13:29 

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State  (Vatican Media)
Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, speaks to Vatican News about Pope Francis’ upcoming Apostolic Visit to Chile and Peru, the World Meeting of Families, Amoris laetitia, the Synod on young people, and the reform of the Roman Curia.
By Devin Watkins

In an interview with Alessandro Gisotti of Vatican News, Cardinal Pietro Parolin offered a window onto the year 2018 for Pope Francis.

The Vatican’s Secretary of State described 2018 as being characterized “by the Church’s special attention on young people, that is, on their hopes, goals, and the challenges facing them.”

The World Meeting of Families takes place in Dublin, Ireland on 21-26 August, just ahead of the Ordinary Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in Rome, whose focus will be “on Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment”.

Cardinal Parolin said an important, innovative aspect is “the Church’s new relationship with young people, expressed in a paradigm of responsibility, which excludes any type of paternalism.”

“The Church and the Pope are asking young people… what contribution they can make to the Gospel and its proclamation, today!” he said.

Holy See names commissary for Sodalitium Christianae Vitae
10 January 2018, 16:15 

The Holy See has appointed a commissioner for the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae, a society of apostolic life based in Peru.

By Christopher Wells

With a decree issued on Wednesday, the Vatican’s Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life has appointed an Apostolic Commissary – a commissioner – to oversee the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae, a society of apostolic life based in Peru. The Sodality has been in crisis since its founder was accused of sexual and psychological abuse.

A statement from the Holy See Press Office said Pope Francis has been carefully following all the information that had been received about the Sodality over a number of years. The Holy Father, it continued, “has shown particular attention to the gravity of the information regarding the internal regime, formation, and economic and financial management,” which was the basis for his “insistent” instructions for the Congregation to devote particular attention to the situation.

Pope Santa Marta: Christian prayer is courageous
12 January 2018, 11:55

Pope Francis at Mass at the Casa Santa Marta
Faith in Jesus and courage to go beyond difficulties as many saints have done, this characterizes Christian prayer. Those were the Pope’s words during his homily at Mass on Friday morning at the Casa Santa Marta, inspired by the healings narrated in the Gospel.

During his homily at morning Mass on Friday, Pope Francis reflected on how it is that those who pray to the Lord get what they ask for, in passages from the Gospel.

Prayer in faith and from faith

The Pope recalled that the Gospel readings from Mark tell of two healings, that of the leper and the  paralytic. Both pray to receive, both do it with faith: the leper, underlined the Holy Father, also challenged Jesus with courage, saying: "If you want you can purify me!". And the Lord's answer is immediate: "I want to". Thus everything is, as the Gospel teaches, "possible for those who believe":

Always, when we approach the Lord to ask for something, we must start from faith and do it in faith: "I have faith that you can heal me, I believe you can do this" and have the courage to challenge you, like this leper, this paralytic. Pray in faith.

We do not pray like parrots

Bomb threats issued against Pope Francis ahead of Chile visit
Inés San Martín   Jan 12, 2018

ROME - Just days before Pope Francis’s scheduled arrival in Santiago on Monday, three incendiary devices exploded in three Catholic churches in Chile’s capital, while a fourth was defused. In one location, the unknown perpetrators left a direct threat to the Latin American pontiff: “The next bombs will be in your cassock.”

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, who’ll welcome Francis at the airport on Monday, said Friday that the events which took place on the night of Jan. 11-12 are “very strange, because it’s not something that one can identify [with] one specific group.”

Francis will be in Chile Jan. 15-18, before heading to Peru until Jan. 21.

Pope at Mass for Migrants and Refugees: 'Overcome fear and welcome the other'

Pope Francis at Mass on World Day of Migrants and Refugees  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis celebrates the World Day of Migrants and Refugees with a Mass in St Peter’s Basilica and reminds us that in order to encounter others we must first overcome our fears.

By Seàn-Patrick Lovett

There was something even more international than usual about the celebration in St Peter’s Basilica this Sunday.

The sounds were those of the youthful and multilingual voices of the Hope choirs. The colors were those of the flags and multicultural costumes of the 49 nations represented.

Pope’s Angelus for Sunday 14 January 2018: Full text
14 January 2018, 12:04

Pope Francis greets pilgrims as he leads the Angelus prayer
We bring you a Vatican News translation of Pope Francis' address at the Sunday Angelus in St. Peter's Square.

Dear brothers and sisters, good morning!

Like on the Feast of the Epiphany and that of the Baptism of Jesus, today's Gospel also proposes the theme of the manifestation of the Lord. This time it is John the Baptist who points Him out to his disciples as "the Lamb of God", inviting them to follow Him.

And it is the same for us: He whom we have contemplated in the mystery of Christmas, is the One we are now called to follow in everyday life. Therefore, today's Gospel introduces us perfectly into ordinary liturgical time, a time that serves to animate and confirm our journey of faith in our everyday life, in a dynamic that moves between epiphany and discipleship, between manifestation and vocation.

LIMA, Peru — A giant Christ statue in Peru’s capital that was donated by a construction company at the center of Latin America’s largest corruption scandal was damaged Saturday in a fire, days before Pope Francis is set to arrive in the South American nation.

Peruvians awoke to find nearly the entire back of the statue, perched on a barren desert bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, charred black.

A spokesperson with Peru’s firefighting corps told RPP Noticias that two dozen firefighters responded to the blaze and that an early working theory was the “Christ of the Pacific” was purposely set aflame.

However police later told state news agency Andina that electrical cables for the statue’s lighting had short-circuited due to humidity, sparking the blaze.

Powerful, deadly earthquake rocks Peru
Published 10:53 a.m. ET Jan. 14, 2018 | Updated 4:40 p.m. ET Jan. 14, 2018

Emergency crews in Peru were digging for survivors and rushing tents and supplies to a string of battered coastal towns after a powerful earthquake rocked the region Sunday, killing at least one person and injuring scores more.

The magnitude-7.1 quake crumbled roads and destroyed more than 100 homes, leaving hundreds homeless, President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski said after arriving at the scene, about 350 miles southeast of Lima.

“We are going to send everything that is needed, such as tents for people whose homes were destroyed,” Kuczynski told Reuters.

The earthquake came four days before Pope Francis arrives in Peru for a four-day visit. The quake struck at 4:18 a.m. local time, its epicenter in the Pacific Ocean, about 25 miles southwest of Acarí, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

Pope Francis has departed from Rome and is headed toward Latin America.

This morning, the papal flight, Boeing B777, carrying the Pope, his entourage and journalists, took off from Rome’s Fiumicino Airport.

The Holy Father’s visit to Peru and Chile marks his 22nd international Apostolic Trip and his sixth journey to Latin America.

As is customary, the Pope sent telegrams to the Heads of States of the countries he flew over. Also, before the flight, as is customary, the Holy Father went to Rome’s Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore to entrust the trip to Our Lady’s help and protection.

After the Pope’s nearly 16-hour flight lands, the Pope will be arriving in the country’s capital of Santiago after 8 p.m. local time and will go direct to the residence of the apostolic nuncio where he will be staying during his time in the country. Tomorrow will mark his first full day. He will celebrate a Mass in Santiago and visit a women’s prison. The day after he will go to Temuco, which has a large indigenous population. The day after, he will have an encounter with young people. The day before the Pontiff will leave for Peru, the Pontiff’s last day in Chile, he will visit the northern port city of Iqique.

By Philippa Hitchen

As he boarded the plane for Chile on Monday, Pope Francis spoke of his fears in the face of threats of nuclear war. Talking to journalists on the papal plane, he also commented on the image of a young Japanese boy carrying the body of his baby brother on his back as he waited in line at a crematorium in the city of Nagasaki.

The Pope had ordered cards to be printed and distributed to journalists with the photo on one side and the words: ‘the fruits of war’ printed on the other, alongside his signature. The shot was captured by American Marine photographer Joe O’Donnell in the days following the U.S. nuclear attack on the city in August 1945.

Protesters greet Pope Francis in Chile amid sex abuse scandal
1 hour ago

SANTIAGO, Chile – Pope Francis flew in to Chile's capital Monday night for a visit expected to be met with protests over sexual abuse by priests and confronted by many Chileans deeply skeptical about the Roman Catholic Church.

It's the pope's first visit to the Andean nation of 17 million people since taking the reins of the church in 2013. It comes at a time when many Chileans are furious over Francis' 2015 decision to appoint a bishop close to the Rev. Fernando Karadima, who the Vatican found guilty in 2011 of abusing dozens of minors over decades.

The Rev. Juan Barros, bishop of the southern city of Osorno, has always denied he knew what Karadima was doing when he was the priest's protege, a position that many Chileans have a hard time believing.

"It's not just time for the pope to ask for forgiveness for the abuses but also to take action," said Juan Carlos Cruz, a victim of Karadima.

Cruz added that if it wasn't possible to jail bad bishops, "at the very least they can be removed from their positions."

After deplaning, Francis was greeted by President Michelle Bachelet and a band played while the two walked on a red carpet as night began to fall. The pope traveled in a black sedan to the center of the city, flanked by several cars. He then transferred to a popemobile, waving to small crowds of well-wishers who lined up along avenues.

Crowds were notably thin, particularly compared to papal visits in other Latin American countries.

"Long live the pope!" yelled some as he passed by in the pope mobile.

Others carried signs criticizing the pope or extolling him to act.

Pope to Chilean Authorities: Democracy and the ability to listen
16 January 2018, 14:56

Pope Francis addresses political authorities and the Moneda Palace in Santiago  (AFP or licensors)
Pope Francis apologizes to victims of clerical abuse in his address to members of the govenment, the diplomatic corps, and the civil authorities in Chile. He also told them they are a nation that has grown and thrived, but reminded them that it's also important not to forget those who suffer situations of injustice.

Democracy in action

But he noted that “each new generation must take up the struggles and attainments of past generations, while setting its own sights even higher.”

“Goodness, together with love, justice and solidarity, said the Pope are not achieved once and for all; they have to be realized each day.”

The Holy Father added that there was no room for complacency when many people still endure situations of injustice.

Pope Francis: Beatitudes born from compassionate heart of Jesus
16 January 2018, 16:03 

CHILE-POPE-VISIT-MASS  (AFP or licensors)
Pope Francis delivered the first homily during his Apostolic Visit to Chile at Mass celebrated in Santiago’s O’Higgins Park.

The Gospel for the votive Mass for Peace and Justice introduces Christ’s Sermon on the Mount with the words, “When Jesus saw the crowds…” The Holy Father took these words as the starting point for his own homily. God’s profound love, he said, is awakened not by “ideas or concepts, but by faces, persons.”

Pope visits women prisoners in Santiago: Full text
16 January 2018, 18:55 

Pope Francis listens to a welcome speech by one of the inmates at San Joaquin Prison in Santiago  (AFP or licensors)
Pope Francis has visited inmates at San Joaquin's Women's Penitentiary Center in Santiago. It is the first time the Pope has visited a female prison.

On the first full day of his visit to Chile, Pope Francis spent time with inmates at San Joaquín women’s prison in Santiago.

It is Chile’s largest female penitentiary and hosts some 650 inmates, most of whom have convictions for drug trafficking.

The majority of women in San Joaquín prison are mothers. The children can live with them inside the jail until they are two years old and after that they can come for weekly visits.

The Pope  met with around five hundred prisoners, together with the chaplains and a religious sister in charge of pastoral care for the inmates.

Please find below the full text of his greetings to the women:

Pope to priests, religious: A Church forgiven of her sins goes out to serve wounded humanity
16 January 2018, 22:29

Pope Francis addressed priests, religious and seminarians in the cathedral of Santiago, Chile, 16 January 2018  (AFP or licensors)

Pope Francis held out St. Peter as a model of a Church which despite being wounded by sin is ‎shown mercy by the Lord, and which goes out to serve a wounded humanity. ‎
By Robin Gomes

Reflecting on the transformation of St. Peter the Apostle, Pope Francis urged Chilean priests, religious and seminarians to be a prophetic Church, which washed of her sins is not afraid to go out and serve a wounded humanity.

Speaking to them in the Cathedral of Chile’s capital, Santiago, the Pope dwelt on John’s Gospel where Peter, disillusioned after the Resurrection, goes back to fishing but catches nothing.  However, at the Lord’s behest, throws the net on the right side and comes up with a miraculous haul of fish.

Pope Francis has urged bishops in Chile to be on guard against the temptation of Clericalism.

Meeting his brother bishops in the Sacresty of Santiago Cathedral, the Pope recalled the ad limina visit in the Vatican about a year ago and said he wished to reiterate some of the points made during that meeting in Rome.

“I can sum them up in the following phrase: the consciousness of being a people” he said.

Warned against the sense of not belonging
