Speaking at a Marian celebration for “Our Lady of the Gate”, Pope Francis denounces violence against women and reminds the faithful that the Virgin Mary never abandons her children.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis spoke out against violence against women, which he called “a scourge that affects our American continent”.

The Holy Father’s words came during a Marian celebration held in Peru’s coastal city of Trujillo on Saturday.

“I ask you to fight against this source of suffering by calling for legislation and a culture that repudiates every form of violence.”

He said there are “numerous cases where women are killed” and that this type of violence is hidden “behind so many walls”.

Cardinal O’Malley: Pope’s words ‘a source of great pain’ for abuse survivors

Boston, Mass., Jan 20, 2018 / 03:25 pm (CNA).- The chairman of the Vatican’s commission on sexual abuse has said that recent comments from Pope Francis were painful and alienating to survivors of clerical sexual abuse.

"It is understandable that Pope Francis’ statements yesterday in Santiago, Chile were a source of great pain for survivors of sexual abuse by clergy or any other perpetrator,” said Cardinal Sean O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston, in a Jan. 20 statement.

The statement refers to a comment made by Pope Francis to a Chilean reporter Jan. 18. The Pope was asked about Bishop Juan Barros, a Chilean accused by four victims of clerical sexual abuse of colluding with their abuser to cover up his crimes. Barros, who has maintained his innocence, has been a subject of controversy since his 2015 appointment to lead the Diocese of Osorno.

“The day they bring me proof against Bishop Barros, I’ll speak," Pope Francis told the reporter. "There is not one shred of proof against him. It’s all calumny. Is that clear?”

O’Malley said that “not having been personally involved in the cases that were the subject of yesterday’s interview I cannot address why the Holy Father chose the particular words he used at that time.”

“What I do know, however, is that Pope Francis fully recognizes the egregious failures of the Church and its clergy who abused children and the devastating impact those crimes have had on survivors and their loved ones.”

The Pope has long been a defender of Barros.

Pope Francis prays before relics of Peruvian Saints

Pope Francis prays before the relics of Peru's Saints in Lima's Cathedral  (AFP or licensors)
On the last day of his apostolic journey to Peru, Pope Francis prayed before the relics the nation's most beloved saints.

Pope Francis on Sunday joined some two and a half thousand priests, religious, seminarians, consecrated lay people and members of ecclesial movements to pray before the relics of the Peruvian Saints in Lima’s Cathedral of Saint John the Apostle.

The relics of Saint Martin de Porres, Saint Rose of Lima, Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo, and Saint John Macias were brought from Santo Domingo Convent. Those of Saint Francis Solanus - enshrined at the Archbishop's Museum – were also put on display and placed besides the presbytery.

The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist, located in the historic center of Lima  was built in 1535 after Francisco Pizarro laid the first stone.

The building has suffered the devastating consequences of the earthquakes which have rocked Lima.

Above one of its oldest altars is the image of Our Lady of Evangelization, a gift from Emperor Carlos V. In Her hand, She holds a golden rose placed by Saint Pope John Paul II in 1988 during his second trip to the country.

This is the prayer offered by Pope Francis before the Relics:

Pope appeals to Congolese authorities to avoid violence

Praying the Angelus with the faithful in Peru, Pope Francis appeals to authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo to do everything in their power to avoid all forms of violence.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis has appealed to authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo to do everything in their power to avoid all forms of violence.

"I ask the authorities and those responsible and all those in this beloved country that they use maximum commitment and effort to avoid all forms of violence and look for solutions in favor of the common good," he said.

His comments came ahead of the Angelus prayer in the Peruvian capital of Lima on Sunday.

Police in Congo used tear gas and gunfire to disperse thousands of demonstrators on the same day, killing at least 5 people and injured dozens more. The country's Catholic Church had called for peaceful protests, but the government banned the marches.

Saintly examples

Speaking ahead of the Angelus prayer, Pope Francis also invited the people of Peru to have courage and to follow the many saintly examples the Church of their country offers them

The Latest: Cardinal who rebuked pope helps celebrate Mass
January 21 at 4:32 PM

LIMA, Peru — The Latest on Pope Francis’ visit to Peru (all times local):

4:25 p.m.

The American cardinal who publicly rebuked Pope Francis over his remarks about Chilean sex abuse victims is concelebrating Francis’ final Mass in Peru.

Cardinal Sean O’Malley is the archbishop of Boston and Francis’ top abuse adviser.

He is one of dozens of bishops and cardinals celebrating the Sunday service under a huge, tented altar set up on a dusty Lima airfield, the last event of the pontiff’s weeklong visit to Chile and Peru.

O’Malley publicly rebuked Francis on Saturday for accusing victims of Chile’s most notorious pedophile priest of slandering another bishop with their claims.

The cardinal said the pope’s words were “a source of great pain for survivors of sexual abuse.”

Francis is likely to face questions about the issue on his in-flight news conference while returning to Rome.

Pope Mass in Lima: Jesus walks in our cities rekindling hope
21 January 2018, 20:45

Pope celebrates Mass at Las Palmas airbase Lima  (AFP or licensors
In the final Mass of his Apostolic Journey to Latin America, Pope Francis underlined how Jesus continues to walk in our cities and streets, “in order to rekindle the flame of hope and the aspiration that breakdown can be overcome by fraternity, injustice defeated by solidarity, violence silenced by the weapons of peace.”

The Pope during his homily at Las Palmas Airbase in Lima drew inspiration from the readings of the day in which the Lord speaks to Jonah saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you” and in which Jesus sets out towards Galilee to preach the Good News.

***
I thank Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani, Archbishop of Lima, for his kind words, you my  Brother Bishops for your presence, and all those who have helped to make this visit leave me with such an indelible impression.

I am grateful to all who have made this journey possible. Above all, I thank President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, the civil authorities and the thousands of volunteers whose quiet and selfless devotion made everything run smoothly. I am grateful to the organizing committee and to all those whose dedication and efforts made my visit possible. Being with you has been very good for me. I thank you.

I began my pilgrimage among you by speaking of Peru as a land of hope. A land of hope because of its biodiversity and the beauty of its landscapes, which help us to discover the presence of God.

A land of hope because of its rich traditions and customs, which have shaped the soul of this people.

Pope Francis urges the people of Peru to “protect their hope”, as he leaves the country, the final stop on his journey in Latin America.

Following Mass earlier at the Las Palmas airbase in Lima, the Holy Father, in farewell greetings, thanked everyone who had made his journey possible. He said, "I began my pilgrimage among you by speaking of Peru as a land of hope.  A land of hope because of its biodiversity and the beauty of its landscapes, which help us to discover the presence of God. A land of hope because of its rich traditions and customs, which have shaped the soul of this people.  A land of hope for its young people, who are not the future but the present of Peru.”

Pope apologizes to sex abuse victims, defends accused Chilean bishop
By Junno Arocho Esteves Catholic News Service

CNS/Paul Haring
ABOARD THE PAPAL FLIGHT FROM PERU (CNS) -- Pope Francis apologized to victims of clergy sex abuse, saying he unknowingly wounded them by the way he defended a Chilean bishop accused of covering up abuse by his mentor.

Speaking with journalists on his flight to Rome from Lima, Peru, Jan. 21, the pope said he only realized later that his words erroneously implied that victims' accusations are credible only with concrete proof.

"To hear that the pope says to their face, 'Bring me a letter with proof,' is a slap in the face," the pope said.

Pope Francis was referring to a response he gave in Iquique, Chile, Jan. 18 when local reporters asked about his support for Bishop Juan Barros of Osorno, given accusations that the bishop may have been aware of abuse perpetrated by his former mentor, Father Fernando Karadima. The priest was sentenced to a life of prayer and penance by the Vatican after he was found guilty of sexually abusing boys.

Pope to Davos Economic Forum: Opportunites for integral development
23 January 2018, 10:41

Pope Francis in a message for the opening of the World Economic Forum in Davos, says it is vital to safeguard the dignity of the human person, in particular by offering to all people real opportunities for integral human development.

The World Economic Forum was established in 1971 as a not-for-profit foundation and has its headquarters in Geneva.

It’s aim is to demonstrate entrepreneurship in the global public interest while upholding the highest standards of governance and brings together people from all walks of life who can promote positive change.

In his message to the Executive Chairman of the Forum, Professor Klaus Schwab to mark the opening of the annual meeting in Davos, Pope Francis notes that this year’s theme Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World is very timely adding that “at the level of global governance, we are increasingly aware that there is a growing fragmentation between States and Institutions.”

Pope Francis releases 2018 World Communications Day message
24 January 2018, 12:01

Booklet of Pope Francis' World Communications Day message  (Vatican Media @Vatican Media)
In his message for the World Communications Day 2018, Pope Francis calls for a “journalism for peace” in response to the threat of fake news, which “thrives on the absence of healthy confrontation with other sources of information”.

Pope Francis on Wednesday released his message for World Communications Day, which is held annually on the Sunday before Pentecost, falling this year on 13 May 2018.

“The truth will set you free” (Jn 8:32). Fake news and journalism for peace” is the theme of the Pope’s message.

The Holy Father explores what makes fake news ‘fake’, how to recognize it, truth as an antidote, and how a “journalism for peace” takes people as its focus.

World Communications Day is the only worldwide celebration called for by the Second Vatican ‎Council ‎‎(“Inter Mirifica”, 1963).

The Holy ‎Father's message is traditionally published in conjunction with January ‎‎24, feast of St. Francis de ‎Sales, patron of journalists, to allow bishops' conferences, diocesan offices and ‎communications ‎organizations sufficient time to prepare audiovisual and other materials for national ‎and local ‎celebrations.

The first World Communications Day was observed on May 7, 1967, under the pontificate of Blessed Pope Paul VI, who wanted to draw attention to the communications media and the enormous power they have for cultural transformation. This year’s observance is the 52nd edition.

Please find below the official English-language translation of the Pope’s message:

Pope: Christians Face Dangers that Demean Human Dignity
January 25, 2018

Christians today face dangers that demean their human dignity, according to Pope Francis. But we also “experience the tenderness of God, who in our daily life saves us lovingly from sin, from fear, and from anguish.”

His remarks came January 25, 2018, in his homily in the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside-the-Walls, where he presided over the celebration of the Second Vespers of the Solemnity of the Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle, at the end of the 51st Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, on the theme: Powerful is Your Hand, Lord (Cf. Exodus 15:1-21).

Pope: transmit the faith with the courage of truth and witness
26 January 2018, 15:13

Pope Francis celebrates Mass at the Casa Santa Marta
During his homily at morning Mass in the Casa Santa Marta Pope Francis reflected on the how we announce the Gospel message saying that words are empty if they do not reflect real life.
By Linda Bordoni

At the heart of Pope Francis’ homily on Friday morning in the Casa Santa Marta was a reflection on how to transmit the faith.

Taking his cue from the liturgical reading of the day in which the apostle Paul addresses his disciple Timothy recalling his “sincere faith” that first lived in his grandmother and then in his mother, the Pope highlighted the words that indicate how faith is to be transmitted: “son”, as Paul calls Timothy, “mother,” “grandmother,” and finally "testimony".

The 'folly of preaching' according to Paul

The Pope said that Paul generated Timothy with the “folly of preaching.” He said that in the reading a mention is also made of “tears” because, he explained, Paul does not sweeten his preaching with half-truths, he does so with courage because the announcement of the Gospel “cannot be lukewarm”.

“Preaching is - allow me the word – ‘a slap’. A slap that moves you and pushes you forward” he said.
