Pope to seminarians: Be servants of your flock
17 February 2018, 12:33

Pope Francis  (AFP or licensors)
Pope Francis met with the community from the Italian Pontifical Regional Seminary of Sardinia on Saturday, telling them that the hopes of the Church on the island lay with them.

This year the Pontifical Regional Seminary of Sardinia is celebrating the 90th anniversary of its foundation and it was on the occasion of this milestone that Pope Francis on Saturday greeted seminarians and staff from the college in the Vatican.

Be attentive to the poor

During his discourse to those gathered the Pope said that, today's material and spiritual poverty made it even more important that pastors are attentive to the poor, capable of being with them, “so that the poor feel that our churches are their home.”

“I encourage you, the Pope commented,  to prepare yourselves now to become priests of the people and to the people, not dominators but servants of the flock entrusted to you.

He went on to say that there was a great need for men of God “who look to the essential, who lead a sober and transparent life, without nostalgia for the past but capable of looking forward according to the healthy tradition of the Church.”

Pope Francis: Paul VI will be a saint this year
17 February 2018, 17:21

Blessed Pope Paul VI  (Vatican Media)
During a talk with the pastors of the parishes of Rome, Pope Francis indicated that Paul VI would be canonized this year.
By Christopher Wells

“Paul VI will be a saint this year.”

Pope Francis seemed to confirm the imminent canonization of his predecessor, Paul VI, in a dialogue with Rome’s parish priests earlier this week at the Lateran Basilica.

“There are two Bishops of Rome who are already saints,” he said, referring to the two most recent Popes to be canonized: St John XXIII, and St John Paul II. More than 80 popes are recognized as saints by the Catholic Church. Several others have active “causes” including Pius IX – who, like Paul VI, has already been beatified – and Pius XII, whose “heroic virtues” have been recognized, making him “Venerable.” In his remarks on Thursday, Pope Francis mentioned the cause of John Paul I, who is also Venerable, and whose cause is ongoing.

“And [Pope emeritus] Benedict [XVI] and I are on the waiting list,” Pope Francis said, jokingly. “Pray for us!”

On First Sunday of Lent, Pope focuses on temptation, redemption, Good News

Pope Francis addresses the faithful at the Angelus for the First Sunday of Lent  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis reflected on the temptation of Jesus during his remarks ahead of the Angelus on Sunday.
By Christopher Wells

The Gospel account of the temptation of Jesus was the basis for Pope Francis’ reflections at the Angelus on the First Sunday of Lent, 2018.

The Holy Father based his remarks on three main themes: temptation, conversion, and Good News.

Speaking about temptation, the Pope said Jesus went into the desert to prepare Himself for His mission. The Lord had no need of conversion, but was led by the Holy Spirit to be tested, in order to obey the will of the Father, and to give us the grace to overcome temptation. His preparation consisted in fighting “against the spirit of evil” – and for us, too, Lent is a time of spiritual combat. “We are called to face the Evil One with prayer,” the Pope said, so that, “with God’s help,” we might be able “to overcome him in our daily life.”

Pope: I desire young people to be the protagonists of the Synod

Pope Francis called young people to take part in the pre-Synodal preparatory meeting by way of social media.
By Christopher Wells

At the Angelus on Sunday, Pope Francis called on young people from around the world to take part in the preparatory work of the upcoming Synod on Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment.

In March, more than 300 young people will be in Rome for a pre-Synodal preparatory meeting ahead of October’s synod. “But I strongly desire that all young people might be the protagonists of this preparation,” Pope Francis said on Sunday. “And so they will be able to contribute online through linguistic groups moderated by other young people.”

The Pope was referring to an initiative promoted by the Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops, under the direction of its General Secretary, Cardinal Lorenzo Baldiserri. Young people are able to join a Facebook group through the Synod website, and from 12 March will have the opportunity to questions posted on the group page. Their answers will be added to the contributions of the meeting in Rome.

Pope Is Departing for Week of Spiritual Exercises
Fr José Tolentino de Mendonça Is Delivering Reflections to Pontiff and Roman Curia
February 18, 2018

This afternoon, Pope Francis is departing to participate in his annual Lenten Spiritual Exercises at Casa ‘Gesù Divin Maestro’ (the Divine Master House) in the town of Ariccia near Rome.

For a week, the Holy Father will remain there praying with members of the Roman Curia.

During his Sunday Angelus address, the Pope asked the faithful to pray for him and those who will be with him participating in the week long retreat. At 4 p.m., he and the Curia members are expected to get on a bus and by 6 p.m., arrive.

Meditations this year have been entrusted by the Pope to Portuguese priest and Biblical theologian, Father José Tolentino de Mendonça, vice-rector of the Portuguese Catholic University in Lisbon, who will lead the meditations on the theme: “Praise of Thirst.”

Vatican investigator meets with Chile abuse victim in NYC

NEW YORK - A key victim in the Chilean sex abuse scandal said he felt his story was finally heard after an hours-long meeting with a Vatican sex-crimes investigator on Saturday, the same day Pope Francis revived his lapsed sex abuse advisory commission amid criticism of how he is handling the scandal.

The meeting at a Manhattan church between Archbishop Charles Scicluna and whistleblower Juan Carlos Cruz was “intense, detailed and eye-opening,” Cruz said to the reporters outside the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus. Scicluna didn’t speak to reporters after the meeting that lasted more than three hours.

“For the first time I felt that someone is listening,” Cruz said. “I think (Scicluna) was sincerely moved by what I was saying. He cried.”

Cruz said they mainly spoke about Chilean Bishop Juan Barros, whom Francis has vigorously defended. Barros is accused by victims of witnessing and ignoring the abuse of young parishioners by Father Fernando Karadima, who was removed from ministry and sentenced to a lifetime of “penance and prayer” in 2010.

Spiritual Exercises: "Jesus Wants to Quench our Thirst"

Pope Francis and members of the Vatican Curia travelled on Sunday afternoon to the "Casa del Divin Maestro,” a retreat centre in Ariccia, located in the Alban hills just outside Rome. They are taking part in the week-long Curial Spiritual Exercises. For his meditation on Monday, Portughese Fr José Tolentino Mendonça chose the phrase that the Apostle John puts on the lips of Jesus in the final chapter of the Book of Revelation.

Polarizing Nigerian bishop backed by pope steps down

An embattled bishop who has not been able to set foot in his diocese in Nigeria for over five years has resigned his position, saying it is “no longer beneficial to the Church” for him to hold his position, just over eight months after Pope Francis threatened to suspend any priest who refused to accept him.

Bishop Peter Ebere Okpaleke was appointed to the Diocese of Ahiara in southern Nigeria by Pope Benedict in 2012.

A statement from the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples on Monday said Francis has thanked Okpaleke for his “love for the Church.”

“I have taken this step also for the good of all the faithful of Ahiara Diocese, especially those that have remained faithful in a local Church being controlled by some priests,” Okpaleke said in his resignation letter.

Spiritual exercises: Recognizing our Thirst for God
20 February 2018, 12:36

Fr José Tolentino Mendonça continues exploring the theme of thirst with Pope Francis and members of the Roman Curia during their Spiritual Exercises.
By Sr Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp

“I became aware that I was thirsty,” and “Thirst does not make me ill” are the titles of the reflections given by Fr Tolentino on Monday evening and Tuesday morning.

Recognize how we thirst

On Monday afternoon, Fr Tolentino focused on becoming aware of the thirst within. “Connecting with one’s own thirst is not easy work, but if we do not do it, the spiritual life loses its grip on reality,” Fr Tolentino says. Recognizing our thirst is how we anchor our spiritual lives in the concrete reality of who we are, he said. After this introduction, Fr Tolentino then explored how it is possible to evaluate the “state of our thirst,” and how “to interpret that thirst,” before turning to the theme of “the thirst for God” through a reflection on Psalm 42: “As a deer longs for running waters.” Yearning for water happens when water is absent. We yearn for God precisely because we feel his absence. Fr Tolentino explains that “the absence of God becomes a kind of temple because it sets in motion desire, nostalgia, sighing, seeking. And thirst then becomes a type of uninterrupted prayer.”

Spiritual exercises: Jesus’ Thirst and Woman’s Tears

“Jesus’ thirst,” and “Tears tell thirst’s story” are the titles of the reflections given by Fr Tolentino on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.

Jesus Thirsts

On Tuesday afternoon, Fr Tolentino took inspiration for his meditation using a verse from John’s Gospel: “After this, aware that everything was now finished, in order that the scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said, ‘I thirst’ ” (John 19:28). There are other occurrences in John’s Gospel that help us understand Jesus’ words: 1) When Jesus is thirsty and asks the Samaritan woman for a drink (John 4:13-15); 2) The declaration “whoever believes in me will never thirst” (John 6:35); and 3) The words of Jesus spoken in the temple during the Feast of Booths: “Let anyone who thirsts come to me and drink” (John 7:37). Fr Tolentino observes that Jesus’ “I thirst” spoken from the cross in the present tense makes it “intense, current and uninterrupted. Jesus still says today ‘I thirst’. This helps us understand how Jesus fulfills his destiny.” His mission being fulfilled, he says, “I thirst.”

How Bergoglio Is Rewriting His Life. The Years of the "Great Desolation"

In the closed-door meeting that he held at the beginning of Lent, on February 15, with the priests of the Rome diocese of which he is bishop, Francis sketched out in an unexpected way the trajectory of his life, describing it as a series of “passages,” some of them bright, others dark.

Let’s review word by word this autobiography of his, very instructive on the personality of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, in the official transcription that has been released and that respects the disorder of his speech in Italian.

The first phase is one of rapid and dazzling ascent toward what further on he would call “omnipotence”:

Archbishop Scicluna admitted to hospital
21 February 2018, 18:32

Archbishop Charles Scicluna
News of Archbishop Scicluna's illness was released on Wednesday.
By Christopher Wells

Archbishop Charles Scicluna, who was sent by Pope Francis to Chile to investigate claims that a Bishop had covered-up sexual abuse, has been admitted to hospital in Santiago.

A spokesman for the Chilean Bishops’ Conference, Deacon Jaime Coiro, said Archbishop Scicluna had been feeling unwell since before he began his mission. On Tuesday, a decision was made to consult with doctors. Following the evaluation, the Archbishop was admitted to hospital for gall bladder surgery.

According to Deacon Coiro, the Archbishop’s mission is expected to continue, with Scicluna’s assistant, Bishop Jordi Bertomeu, taking his place. Bishop Bertomeu had been serving as translator and notary in the “listening meetings” with sex abuse victims. Another notary will be assigned to assist the Bishop.

Spiritual Exercises: the prodigal son
22 February 2018, 10:48

Fr Tolentino Mendoça preaches to the Roman Curia  (ANSA)
The story of the prodigal son is not a parable but a mirror. This was the theme of Fr José Tolentino Mendoça’s meditation for the spiritual exercises of the Roman Curia on Thursday morning.
By Sr Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp

We have all heard the Parable of the Prodigal Son many times. We know the story well—a man has two sons and the younger asks his father for his part of the inheritance….

The parable of the prodigal son is our story

This parable is about each one of us, Fr Tolentino says. “Within us are feelings that are suffocated, things that need to be clarified, pathologies, countless threads that need to be connected.” In other words, there are many aspects of our lives that need reconciliation. The gift that Jesus wants to give us is his word. In that word, conflicts and fear are transformed. “Only mercy, that excessive love that God teaches us, is able to redeem us,” Fr Tolentino says.

Spiritual Exercises: Listen to the thirst of the periphery
22 February 2018, 17:00
In his meditation on Thursday afternoon, Fr José Tolentino Mendoça provokes us to listen to the thirst of those living on the periphery. By doing that, he says, “the Church will rediscover herself.”

Just left St. Peter's Basilica where the statue of the apostle is decked out in robes and flanked by candles. The altar of the basilica is also decorated with candles. Quite a sight to see #StPeters

Feast of the Chair of St. Peter: a treasure of the Vatican Basilica
22 February 2018, 11:42

The Feast of the Chair of St. Peter commemorates Christ’s choosing Peter to sit in his place as the servant-authority of the whole Church. Jesus told Peter that “you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church.” It is with this pastoral responsibility given him that the Pope shepherds Christ’s flock.

In this exclusive video, Vatican Media presents the masterpiece of the greatest sculptor of the 17th century, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, which contains the ancient relic from the early centuries of Christianity.

The wooden throne encased in bronze by Bernini was given to Pope John VIII by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles the Bald in 875.

Pope's message for WYD: Do not be afraid!
22 February 2018, 11:28

Pope Francis’ message for the 33rd World Youth Day, which will be celebrated at diocesan level on Palm Sunday, March 25th, focuses on helping young people to overcome their fears and discern their true vocation
By Philippa Hitchen

In the message, published by the Vatican on Thursday, the Pope notes that the forthcoming celebration marks another step in preparation for the international World Youth Day which is due to take place in Panama in January 2019. It also precedes the Synod of Bishops on the theme of youth which is scheduled for October this year, highlighting the importance of young people in the life of the whole Church.

Name your fears

Reflecting on the words of the Angel Gabriel, “Do not be afraid!”, spoken to Mary in St Luke’s Gospel, Pope Francis asks young people to name their own fears. Today, he says, there are many youngsters who continuously photo-shop their images or hide behind false identities, in an attempt to adapt to artificial and unattainable standards. The uncertainty of the jobs market, a sense of inadequacy and a lack of emotional security are other fears which afflict young people, he says.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The sectarian will meet the secular in an unusual way with the May 10 debut of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibit “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” in New York City.

Included will be not only high fashion meant for the taste-making laity, but vestments and accoutrements from 15 different papacies from the 18th to the early 21st centuries.

“The loan from the Office of the Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff was negotiated over a period of approximately two years. It required eight trips to the Vatican,” said Andrew Bolton, head curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

Spiritual Exercises: the beatitudes of thirst
23 February 2018, 10:00

Friday morning liturgy celebrated by Pope Francis  (Vatican Media @Vatican Media)
Pope Francis and the Roman Curia conclude their spiritual exercises on Friday which began on Sunday evening. The last meditation of Fr José Tolentino Mendoça focusing on the “Beatitudes of Thirst” concludes his cycle of meditations on thirst.
By Sr Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp

The Beatitudes: Matthew sets the scene on the mountain. We therefore understand that “he is creating a parallel between Jesus and the figure of Moses—between the presentation of the Old Law, the Decalogue, and that of the New Law, the Beatitudes,” Fr Tolentino begins.

The Beatitudes are our path

He continues by saying that the Beatitudes are more than a law. They are, rather “a configuration of life, a true existential call.” In this way, they enlighten the path for the Church and for humanity as we journey toward an eschatological horizon.

Pope Francis and Curia conclude spiritual exercises
23 February 2018, 11:06

Pope greeting Fr José Tolentino Mendoça, preacher of the curial spiritual exercises  (Vatican Media)
On the conclusion of the spiritual exercises preached by Fr José Tolentino, Pope Francis thanked him for his accompaniment.
By Sr Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp

Pope Francis said that the spiritual exercises would continue throughout the day with “the Day of Fasting and Prayer for South Sudan, the Congo, and Syria.” He thanked Fr Jose for having spoken about the Church, for allowing those present to hear from the church “this small flock.”

Holy Spirit at work

The Pope also expressed gratitude to Fr Tolentino “For having reminded us that the Church is not a cage for the Holy Spirit. That the Spirit flies elsewhere and works elsewhere as well.” The Pope appreciated the citations Fr Tolentino used which, he says, illustrate how the Holy Spirit works in non-Christians and people from other religious persuasions. Even today, the Pope says, “there are people like ‘Cornelius,’ like the ‘centurion’, like ‘Peter’s prison guard ’ who live an interior quest, searching.”
