Pope Francis meets with the Forum of Family Associations  (Vatican Media)

Pope says abortion of sick, disabled children reflects Nazi mentality
By Elise Harris

Vatican City, Jun 16, 2018 / 08:02 am (CNA/EWTN News).- In a speech to a family association Saturday, Pope Francis again stressed that God's vision of the family is between a man and a woman, and compared the abortion of children who are sick or disabled to a Nazi mentality.

“I've heard that it's fashionable, or at least usual, that when in the first few months of pregnancy they do studies to see if the child is healthy or has something, the first offer is: let's send it away,” the pope said June 16, referring to the trend of aborting sick or disabled children.

This, he said, is “the murder of children...to get a peaceful life an innocent [person] is sent away...We do the same as the Nazis to maintain the purity of the race, but with white gloves.”

“It's an atrocity but we do the same thing,” he said, according to Italian media.

Pope Francis spoke to members of the Forum of Family Associations, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

His words on abortion come just days after his home country of Argentina voted June 14 in favor of a bill that would legalize abortion as early as the first 14 weeks of pregnancy. The comments also come just over a month ahead of his Aug. 25-26 trip to Ireland for the World Meeting of Families, which will feature Jesuit Fr. James Martin as a keynote speaker on how to be welcoming to the LGBT community.

During his speech, Francis tossed his prepared remarks, telling participants that a prepared text “seems a bit cold,” according to Italian newspaper La Stampa.

The pope, the paper reported, said it is “painful” to think that society would accept the killing of children simply because they are sick or disabled, but this is the current mentality.

On the family, he noted that in modern society “one speaks of different types of family,” defining the term in different ways.

“Yes, it's true that family is an analogous word, yes one can also say 'the family of stars,' 'the family of trees,' 'the family of animals,'” he said, but stressed that “the family in the image of God is only one, that of man and woman...marriage is a wonderful sacrament.”

By Robin Gomes

The visit of Pope Francis to Geneva next week will be his 23rd foreign trip. Even thought it is primarily an ecumenical pilgrimage, the Pope is also visiting his flock in Switzerland.

The daylong visit to the Swiss city intends to to be a step forward in the Church’s continuing quest for unity among Christians, and to confirm the faith of the Catholic faithful of Switzerland who form 38% of the population.

WCC’s 70 years and ecumenism

Pope Francis is going to Geneva to join in the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), an event that he considers of great ecumenical importance given the good relations between the WCC and the Catholic Church through the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Christian Unity.

OSORNO, Chile - As part of their special mission to help bring healing to the troubled Chilean diocese of Osorno, Archbishop Charles Scicluna and Monsignor Jordi Bertomeu are holding several pastoral meetings this week which they say are aimed at listening.

Speaking to Chilean media at the airport after landing in Osorno, Scicluna said they came “to convey the special closeness of the pope to the beloved people of Osorno. We are going to have a lot of discussion and will listen to our brothers, which is the most important [task] for us.”

Similarly, Bertomeu said they are “happy to be here in Osorno,” and voiced hope that they would be able “to communicate the Holy Father’s request for forgiveness in peace, in concord and in harmony.”

Scicluna, Archbishop of Malta and the Vatican’s former top prosecutor on cases of clerical abuse, is currently in Osorno with Bertomeu, an official of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, for a June 12-19 pastoral mission to the Chilean Dioceses of Osorno and Santiago in order to advance “the process of healing and reparation for victims of abuse” in Chile.

Pope denounces “slanderous communication” of dictatorships
18 June 2018, 13:47

Pope Francis celebrating Mass at Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican on June 18, 2018.   (Vatican Media)
In his homily at Mass at Casa Santa Marta, June 18, the Pope spoke about the devastating power of slanderous communication used by dictators against others. It is something that happens even today.
By Robin Gomes

If you want to destroy institutions or people, you start by speaking ill of them.  This is the “slanderous communication” that Pope Francis exhorted Christians to watch out against in his homily at Mass Monday morning in the chapel of the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta residence.

Slander makes martyrs of innocents

The Pope was reflecting on the episode in the First Book of Kings, where Jezebel, the cruel wife of King Ahab of Samaria, used slander and falsehood to have Naboth killed in order to take possession of his vineyard which her husband greatly coveted.

The Pope described Naboth as a “martyr of fidelity to the inheritance" that he had received from his forefathers: "an inheritance of the heart".

Pope at Mass: ‘Forgive, love our enemies’
19 June 2018, 11:03

Pope Francis celebrates Mass in the Casa Santa Marta on Tuesday  (Vatican Media)
In his homily at Mass in the Casa Santa Marta on Tuesday morning, Pope Francis says Christians should forgive, love, and bless our enemies, to be perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect.

Pope Francis at Mass on Tuesday morning said the mystery of Christian life is loving our enemies and praying for our persecutors.

He drew inspiration from the day’s Gospel (Mt 5:43-48), in which Jesus invites his followers to a higher standard of human relations, so as to be “perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

The Holy Father said forgiveness, prayer, and love for those who seek to destroy us is the path Jesus has laid out for us.

Pope sends message to Caritas "Share the Journey" lunch
19 June 2018, 11:59

Renewing his full support and backing for the Caritas “Share the Journey” campaign, Pope Francis has invited all men and women of goodwill to celebrate “World Refugee Day” by sharing a meal with a migrant or a refugee.
By Linda Bordoni

In a message to participants at a lunch organized by Caritas Rome in the city’s main soup kitchen that caters for tens of thousands of poor people, many of them migrants and refugees, Pope Francis on Tuesday highlighted the importance and the value of “sharing” spaces, events and simple things like a meal, in order to overcome barriers and nurture feelings of brotherhood.

The Caritas lunch, organized as part of a Week of Global Action around UN World Refugee Day which is marked, each year on June 20, saw the participation of some 100 migrants and refugees together with the heads of Caritas organizations in Rome as well as ecclesial and civil authorities.

In his message Pope Francis said “I wish to encourage the Caritas family, the faithful and their pastors, and all people of good will to create ever new spaces for sharing” so that such meetings may give life renewed feelings of fraternity with migrants and refugees.

Pope at General Audience: ‘Commandments are path to freedom’
20 June 2018, 12:04

Pope Francis at the Wednesday General Audience  (Vatican Media )
In his catechesis at the Wednesday General Audience, Pope Francis says the Commandments establish a dialogue between us and God, and set us on the path towards freedom.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis began the Wednesday General Audience with a personal greeting to some 200 sick and disabled people gathered in the Paul VI Audience Hall. He told the pilgrims basking with him under the hot sun in St. Peter’s Square that the two groups form a single community.

Turning to his catechesis, Pope Francis continued his reflection on the Commandments, calling them “Ten Words for living the Covenant”. The Scriptures (Exodus 20:1), he said, do not call them “Commandments” but says “God spoke all these words.”

Abuse allegation against Cardinal Theodore McCarrick 'credible'
By Elise Harris

Vatican City, Jun 20, 2018 / 07:30 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The Archdiocese of New York announced Wednesday that an investigation it conducted into an allegation of sexual abuse against Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who oversaw multiple U.S. dioceses, has found the accusation to be “credible and substantiated.”

In the June 20 statement, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, said the alleged abuse happened nearly 50 years ago while McCarrick was a priest of the New York archdiocese. It is the only such accusation against McCarrick that the archdiocese is aware of, Dolan said.

Once the archdiocese received the allegation, they turned it over to local law enforcement, and it was “thoroughly investigated” by an independent forensics team, Dolan said, noting that McCarrick has maintained his innocence, but is cooperating in the investigation.

The Vatican has been informed of the accusation, and as a result, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, by order of Pope Francis, has prohibited McCarrick from public ministry. No official statement from the Vatican has been released.

Pope Francis has spoken about talks with China, migration policy, populism, Chile’s clerical sex abuse crisis, reform of the Roman Curia, and other issues in a wide-ranging interview with the Reuters news agency. The interviewer was Philip Pullella, head of Reuter’s Rome bureau.
By Susy Hodges

In a new one-on-one interview Pope Francis has responded to a series of questions on various issues including the Holy See’s talks with China, the position of women within the Church, migration policy, populism, Chile’s clerical sex abuse crisis and reform of the Roman Curia.

Talks with China “at a good point”

Asked in the interview about relations with China, Pope Francis said he was optimistic about the outcome of normalization talks with the Chinese authorities saying they were “at a good point” but couldn’t say when they would conclude. He acknowledged that dialogue “is a risk” but said he preferred that to “the certain defeat” of not holding a dialogue with Beijing

In New Interview with Reuters, Pope Talks on Immigration, Chile, Critics, & Women
June 20, 2018 13:26•

Pope Francis wants more women to possess high positions in the Vatican and Church, but has clarified that this doesn’t mean ‘masculinism in a skirt.’

In a wide-ranging interview with Reuters, published June 20, 2018, the Pope commented on this and various other topics, including US immigration policy, China, internal critics in the Church, and Vatican reform.

The Holy Father also responded to questions regarding those in the Church who have accused him of being too liberal on Church teaching and creating confusion on moral issues, especially with the Apostolic Exhortation on the family Amoris Laetitia’s Chapter 8. The interview recalled that US Cardinal Raymond Burke, along with three other cardinals, sent a letter to the Pope (The Dubia), in which they asked him to clarify certain themes on moral issues.

Regarding the letter, Francis said he had heard about it “from newspapers.” He said it is “a way of doing things that is, let’s say, not ecclesial, but we all make mistakes.”

Cardinal Brandmüller Questions Francis’ Claim Not to Have Received the Dubia Before Publication
Maike Hickson    June 20, 2018

Today, on 20 June, Reuters published a new interview with Pope Francis. Although the interview is making headlines because of the Pope’s criticism of President Donald Trump’s immigration policy, it also contains another controversial assertion: the pope surprisingly now claims that he only heard about the Dubia (concerning his document Amoris Laetitia) “from the newspapers” — a claim that Dubia cardinal Walter Brandmüller has now questioned in comments to OnePeterFive. From the text of the interview:

The pope also commented on internal criticism of his papacy by conservatives, led by American Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke.

In 2016, Burke and three other cardinals issued a rare public challenge to Francis over some of his teachings in a major document on the family, accusing him of sowing disorientation and confusion on important moral issues.

Francis said he had heard about the cardinals’ letter criticizing him “from the newspapers … a way of doing things that is, let’s say, not ecclesial, but we all make mistakes”.

He borrowed the analogy of a late Italian cardinal who likened the Church to a flowing river, with room for different views. “We have to be respectful and tolerant, and if someone is in the river, let’s move forward,” he said. [emphasis added]

He thus implies that the Dubia cardinals did not follow the correct ecclesial procedures and violated the law of courtesy toward the pope by making their text public without first sending it to him privately.

We also contacted Cardinal Walter Brandmüller, one of the four Dubia cardinals, asking him for comment. The cardinal responded in writing and said the following:

The Dubia were first published after – I think it was two months – after the Pope  did not even confirm their reception. It is very clear that we wrote directly to the Pope and at the same time to the Congregation for the Faith. What should be left that is unclear here?

Vatican journalist Edward Pentin tweeted earlier today, also contesting the pope’s account, saying “he received the dubia two months before the cardinals went public and instructed ++Muller not to respond. Memory lapse perhaps.” Here Pentin was referring to Cardinal Gerhard Müller – then-Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF). OnePeterFive has reached now out to Cardinal Müller’s own secretary, asking him for a confirmation of this new papal claim, but has not received a response as of this writing.

Pope in Geneva: Ecumenism: "operating at a loss”
21 June 2018, 12:46

Pope Francis addressing ecumenical prayer service in Geneva
In an address at an ecumenical prayer service during his visit to Geneva Pope Francis urges Christians to walk together in the Spirit even though ecumenism is often seen in the eyes of the world as "a great enterprise operating at a loss.”
By Susy Hodges

Reflecting on the Apostle Paul’s advice for Christians to walk in the Spirit, Pope Francis stressed that “for us Christians walking together is not a ploy to strengthen our own positions” and reminded his listeners that the Lord “begs” us for unity.  His words came during an address on Thursday at an ecumenical prayer service held at the headquarters of the World Council of Churches (WCC) during his one-day visit to Geneva to mark the WCC’s 70th anniversary.

Pope Francis has called on all Christians to overcome the temptation to make their own cultural paradigms absolute and get caught up in partisan interests noting that our ecumenical journey is preceded and accompanied by an ecumenism of blood that urges us to go forward on the path to full Christian unity.

The Pope was addressing the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches in Geneva as well as a number of ecumenical delegates, civil authorities and members of the papal entourage.

His speech represented the highlight of his one-day visit to Geneva where he is marking the 70th anniversary of the WCC.

Full text of Pope Francis' in-flight press conference from Geneva

Vatican City, Jun 21, 2018 / 04:29 pm (CNA).- In a June 21 conversation with journalists on the way back from a trip to Geneva, Pope Francis touched on an array of topics, including ecumenism, intercommunion, peace and just war, and refugees.

Please read below for CNA's full transcript of the Pope's inflight press conference:

Greg Burke:

Thank you, Your Holiness... we wait a second, here we go... perfect! Thank you in the meantime. To journey, to pray, to work together... we have walked, we have prayed also, at various times, and now we touch on work a little, even to eat after, so that it is seen that to journey together brings fruit.

Today the welcoming- we have seen, after many speeches that it is the mutual respect and it is something more, it is also friendship. However, there is still so much work to do and so many challenges and this interests us normally, the challenges... so, to you journalists... but, if you want to say something first [Holy Father]?

Pope Francis:

Thank you for your work, the day was a little heavy, at least for me... but I am content, I am content [ed. note: or ‘happy’] because the various things that we have done -- that is, the prayers to begin, then the speech during lunch it was the most beautiful, then the academic meeting, and then the Mass, they are things that have made me happy... The tiring but beautiful things! Thank you so much! Now I am available to you.

Cardinal Burke responds to Pope's comment about the letter...

Cardinal Burke responds to Francis: We hand-delivered dubia letter to Pope’s residence

Cardinal Burke, however, told LifeSiteNews that “The late Cardinal Carlo Caffarra personally delivered the letter containing the dubia to the Papal Residence, and at the same time to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, on September 19, 2016, as he also delivered subsequent correspondence of the four Cardinals regarding the dubia.”

Burke added that, “During the entire time since the presentation of the dubia, there has never been a question about the fact that they were presented to the Holy Father, according to the practice of the Church and with full respect for his office.”

Cardinal Burke suggested that perhaps the Pope misunderstood the reporter's question. “If the question of the journalist is referring to the formal presentation of the dubia or questions regarding Amoris Laetitia by Cardinal Walter Brandmüller, the late Cardinals Carlo Caffarra and Joachim Meisner, and myself, then Pope Francis must not have understood him,” he said.

Pope's full comment on the letter to be published soon?

Pope Francis’ Comments to Reuters on the Dubia Incomplete

Perplexity over the Holy Father’s questionable recollection of the controversy may be due to the fact that his full comments on the matter in the interview have yet to be published.

Pullella told the Register June 21 that more of the Pope’s comments on the dubia will be published soon.
