Full text of Pope Francis' in-flight press conference from Dublin
Vatican City, Aug 26, 2018 / 07:05 pm
(CNA).-
Please read below for CNA's full transcript of the Pope's Aug. 26 in-flight press conference from Dublin to Rome
:
Greg Burke: Holy Father, thanks for this time you’re dedicating to us after two intense days. Certainly, there were difficult moments. In Ireland, there was the matter of abuses, but also very beautiful moments: the Festival of Families, testimonies from families, the meeting with the young couples and the visit to the Capuchins, but maybe you want to say something else first…
Pope Francis: To say thank you, because if I am tired I think of you who have work, work, work… I thank you so much for your effort and your work. Many thanks.
Greg Burke: The first question, as usual, comes from a journalist of the [host] nation which is Tony Connelly, RTE.
Tony Connelly, RTE: Your Holiness, you spoke on Saturday about the meeting you had with the minister for children. You talked about how moved you were by what she said about the mother and baby homes. What exactly did she tell you? Were you shocked because it was the first time you had heard of these homes?
Pope Francis: The minister first told me something that didn’t have too much to do with mother and children (Editor’s note: mother and baby homes). She told me, and she was brief: “Holy Father, we found mass graves of children, buried children, we’re investigating… and the Church has something to do with this.” But she said it very politely and truly with a lot of respect. I thanked her to the point that this had touched my heart. And, this is why I wanted to repeat it in the speech… and it was not at the airport, I was mistaken, it was at the president’s. At the airport, there was another lady minister and I made the mistake there.
But, she told me, “I’ll send you a memo.” She sent me a memo and I haven’t been able to read it yet. I saw it was a memo, that she sent me a memo. She was very balanced in telling me, “There’s an issue, the investigation has not yet finished.” But, she made me understand that the Church has something to do with this. For me, this was an example of constructive collaboration, but also of, I don’t want to say the word “protest” … of complaint, of complaint for that which at one time maybe the Church was of help to do. That lady had a dignity that touched my heart, and now I have the memo there that I will study when I get home.
Greg Burke: Now, another Irishman, exchanging places, which is Paddy Agnew, who is from the Sunday Independent, a resident in Rome but an Irish journalist.
Paddy Agnew, Sunday Independent: Holy Father, thanks and good evening. Yesterday, Marie Collins, an abuse victim that you know well, said that you are not favorable to a new tribunal for Vatican inquiries on the issue of abuses, new inquiries on the problem of sexual abuse, and in particular on a so-called tribunal of inquiry on bishops, bishop accountability. Why do you think this is not necessary?

VIDEO: Pope tells media he’s ‘not going to say a word’ about McCarrick cover-up
Diane Montagna and Patrick B. Craine
We present below a LifeSite translation of the relevant section from today’s press conference on the papal plane.
Pope’s response to testimony by former U.S. Nuncio Archbishop Viganò
CBS: Good evening, Holy Father. I’ll return to the subject of [sexual abuse]. Very early this morning a document by Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò was published. In it, he says that, in 2013, he had a personal conversaton with you at the Vatican, and that during that conversation he spoke with you explicitly about the behaviour of, and sexual abuse by, the former Cardinal McCarrick, and I wanted to ask you if this was true.
I would also like to ask something else. The Archbishop also said that Pope Benedict had sanctioned McCarrick, that he told him he couldn’t live in a seminary, he couldn’t celebrate the Mass publicly, that he couldn’t travel, he was sanctioned by the Church.
May I ask you whether these two things are true?
Pope Francis:
I will respond to your question. But I would prefer that we first speak about the trip, and then other topics. I got distracted with Stefania and now … but I will respond.
This morning I read that statement. I read it, and I will say sincerely that I must tell you all this — you [CBS] and all of you who are interested: Read the statement carefully yourselves and make your own judgment. I am not going to say a word about this. I believe that the statement speaks for itself, and you all have sufficient journalistic ability to draw conclusions. It is an act of trust. When a little time goes by, and you have drawn conclusions, perhaps I will speak about it, but I would like your professional maturity to do this work. It will do you all good, really.
[CBS makes an inaudible comment as the mic wasn’t on … ]
Pope Francis: Alright as it is.
[CBS requests to ask another question]
CBS: Marie Collins said, after she met you during the encounter with the victims, that she spoke with you directly about the former Cardinal McCarrick. She said that you were very tough in your condemnation of McCarrick. I wanted to ask you when was the first time you heard about the abuses that the former Cardinal had committed?
Pope Francis: This is part of the statement on McCarrick. Study and then I will say something.
Changing the subject, the Pope turned to his meeting with Marie Collins and the abuse victims on Saturday, and his act of forgiveness at today’s Mass. He said:
Pope Francis: But yesterday, I hadn’t read it and I allowed myself to speak clearly with Marie Collins and the group, which was bitter, something I sufferered greatly from. But I believe we had to listen to these eight people, and from this meeting the proposal came out. I made it, but they accepted it, they helped me to formulate it, to ask for forgiveness today in the Mass but about concrete things. For example, the last one that I had never heard about, those mothers ... it was called “the cleansing of women,” when a woman became pregnant, I don’t know, and she wasn’t married, and she went to the hospital, […] the sisters ran it, and then they gave the children up for adoption to people. There were two children, at that time, and they were trying to find their mothers, to see if they were alive, they didn’t know. They told them that it was a mortal sin to do this, and they told the mothers who called for their children, that it was a mortal sin. That is why I ended up saying today, that this is not a mortal sin but the fourth commandment. And the things I said today, some of which I did not know about. It was painful for me, but I also had the consolation of being able to help clarify these things.
And I await your comment on the document. I would like it. Thank you.

President of U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Renews Commitment for Greater Effectiveness and Transparency in Disciplining Bishops
August 27, 2018
WASHINGTON— Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has issued the following statement
.
Cardinal DiNardo's full statement follows:
"In communion with the Holy Father, I join the Executive Committee of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) in taking upon ourselves his exhortation, 'this open wound [of abuse] challenges us to be firm and decisive in the pursuit of truth and justice.'
"On August 1st, I promised that USCCB would exercise the full extent of its authority, and would advocate before those with greater authority, to pursue the many questions surrounding Archbishop McCarrick. On August 16th, I called for an Apostolic Visitation, working in concert with a national lay commission granted independent authority, to seek the truth. Yesterday, I convened our Executive Committee once again, and it reaffirmed the call for a prompt and thorough examination into how the grave moral failings of a brother bishop could have been tolerated for so long and proven no impediment to his advancement.
"
The recent letter of Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò brings particular focus and urgency to this examination. The questions raised deserve answers that are conclusive and based on evidence. Without those answers, innocent men may be tainted by false accusation and the guilty may be left to repeat sins of the past
.
"
I am eager for an audience with the Holy Father to earn his support for our plan of action. That plan includes more detailed proposals to: seek out these answers, make reporting of abuse and misconduct by bishops easier, and improve procedures for resolving complaints against bishops
. Inspired by his recent letter to the people of God, and his motu proprio of two years ago, As a Loving Mother, I am confident Pope Francis shares our desire for greater effectiveness and transparency in the matter of disciplining bishops. We renew our fraternal affection for the Holy Father in these difficult days.

US Bishops’ National Review Board calls for lay leadership

Cover of the USCCB's Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People
Amid the sexual abuse crisis the National Review Board (NRB) of the US Bishops Conference calls for a “lay-led investigation” of bishops, and the implementation of a whistle blowing policy.
By Sr Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp
The recent publication of the Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report in the US, and the revelation of the allegations against former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, has prompted the National Review Board (NRB) to publicly request a lay board to investigate bishops, and that a "whistle blowing" policy be implemented. Established in 2002 by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), the NRB advises the bishops on the prevention of the sexual abuse of minors. The USCCB published the statement on their website on Tuesday.

Viganò issues new statement, documents to clear his name of false charges
Diane Montagna
ROME, August 27, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) —
Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, whose extraordinary testimony implicating Pope Francis and several senior prelates in covering up Archbishop Theodore McCarrick’s alleged sexual abuse of seminarians and priests, today issued a new written statement, rejecting as “false” certain accusations that are now being used to discredit him
.
Archbishop Viganò has also released supporting documents to prove his innocence.
The accusations date back to a 2016 New York Times report, alleging that, as U.S. Nuncio, Viganò “quashed” an independent investigation into sexual misconduct on the part of Archbishop John Nienstedt, who was found innocent by police authorities.

Archbishop Gänswein’s Comments Were Correct and We Stand By Our Reporting
The Register reported Aug. 25 that Benedict XVI had issued sanctions against then-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick but we never stated that the Pope Emeritus confirmed — as alleged in The New York Times — all of Archbishop Viganò’s recent testimony on corruption in the Church
.
Edward Pentin
Much is being made on social media today about Archbishop Georg Gänswein’s comments in which he said it is “fake news” to suggest that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI confirmed Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò’s testimony on abuse cover up in the Vatican.
What Archbishop Gänswein said is entirely accurate: Any assertion that the Pope Emeritus had seen the entire testimony, and confirmed it, is untrue.
The Register also never reported this.
What we did report, given by an inside source close to Benedict in July, was that Benedict had issued sanctions against then-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick but was unable to remember their precise nature.
That has not been denied.

Pope invites Waldensians and Methodists to join in serving the poor
29 August 2018, 11:07
Pope Francis has sent a message to Union of Methodist and Waldensian Churches on the occasion of their synod in northern Italy, August 26-31
.
By Robin Gomes
Pope Francis has invited the faithful of the Waldensian and Methodist Churches to join Catholics in together proclaiming Jesus, especially to the poor and the marginalized of today.
In a message sent to the participants in the annual synod of the Union of Methodist and Waldensian Churches that is taking place in Torre Pellice, near Turin, northern Italy, the Pope expressed his and the Catholic Church’s fraternal closeness.
Serving Lazarus of today
"We are called to spend ourselves in the proclamation of Jesus, which will be credible if it is witnessed in life and lived in charity, especially towards the many Lazarus who are knocking at our door today," said the message that was read at the start of the synod on Sunday by Eugenio Bernardini, the moderator of the Waldensian Table, the apex body of the Church.
"By serving the people of today, defending the dignity of the weakest and promoting justice and peace, we are together becoming agents of that peace which the Lord announced at Easter and which he left us as a legacy", the Pope wrote.

Pope Francis: Families an eloquent sign of God’s dream
29 August 2018, 10:40
At his General Audience on Wednesday, Pope Francis looks back on his visit to Ireland for the World Meeting of Families
.
By Christopher Wells
Pope Francis dedicated his Wednesday General Audience to a reflection on his Apostolic Visit to Ireland for the World Meeting of Families. “My presence” in Ireland, he said, “was intended above all to confirm Christian families in their vocation and mission.”
God's dream for the family
He said the thousands of families that took part “were an eloquent sign of the beauty of God’s dream for the whole human family.” That dream, he continued, “is unity, harmony, and peace in families and in the world”; and he said that God is calling on families “to participate in this dream, and to make the world a home where no one is alone, no one is unwanted, no one is excluded.”

Vatican removes reference to ‘psychiatric help’ for gay kids
Associated Press Aug 28, 2018
ROME -
The Vatican has scrubbed from the official transcript of Pope Francis’s in-flight press conference a comment that young gay children might seek psychiatric help
.
Francis was asked Sunday what he would tell a father whose child comes out as gay. Francis said he would counsel prayer, dialogue and space, but that it depended on the child’s age when this “turmoil” manifested itself.
He said: “Because it means something if it shows when you are still a child, when there are a lot of things to be done, either with psychiatric help, or to see how things are. While it is something else when it shows 20 years later.”
The transcript on the Vatican website removed the “either with psychiatric help” phrase.

Pope serene despite 'pain' over archbishop's testimony, cardinal says

VATICAN CITY (CNS) --
While recent accusations by Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano have created tension in the Catholic Church, Pope Francis is approaching the situation calmly, the Vatican secretary of state said
.
In an interview posted Aug. 30 by "Vatican Insider," the online news supplement to the Italian newspaper La Stampa, Cardinal Pietro Parolin said that in situations like the current crisis "that obviously creates so much bitterness and worry," the pope "has the ability to take a very serene approach."
"From what I saw -- I haven't seen him today, but I have seen him in these days; I was with him during the trip to Ireland and after -- he seems serene," Cardinal Parolin said.
In an 11-page statement, published Aug. 26, Archbishop Vigano, who served as nuncio to the United States from 2011 to 2016, accused church officials, including Pope Francis, of failing to act on accusations of abuse of conscience and power by now-Archbishop Theodore E. McCarrick. Archbishop Vigano claimed he told Pope Francis about Cardinal McCarrick in 2013.
Citing the rights of the faithful to "know who knew and who covered up (Archbishop McCarrick's) grave misdeeds," Archbishop Vigano also named nearly a dozen former and current Vatican officials -- including Cardinal Parolin -- who he claimed were aware of the accusations

Hmmm...quick explanation that the name chanted was not "Vigano."

Pope Francis and his confidence in journalists
30 August 2018, 15:09
It’s a common scene on Wednesdays in St Peter’s Square. The Pope concludes his catechesis, imparts his blessing, and greets those admitted to the so-called “baciamano,” – that is, those who are privileged to be able to meet personally with the Holy Father, if only for a few moments. Various groups applaud as their loved ones are received by the Pope. That’s what happened this Wednesday, when a group of young people preparing for Confirmation raised a cheer when their Bishop, Benvenuto Italo Castellani, ascended the podium to greet Pope Francis
.
This would all be completely normal, but for the fact that some people were convinced they heard a group crying out the name “Viganò,” the former Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, and the author a widely diffused document criticizing Pope Francis. Claims that the crowds were shouting Viganò’s name quickly spread on social media, and from there passed to the “mainstream” media, without being verified. However, listening carefully to the video recording of the audience (see below), one can hear that the chant clearly begins as a cheer for “Italo,” the familiar name for Lucca’s Bishop. Professional journalists were able to ascertain the presence in the Square of the group of confirmands from Lucca, and to note that the chant began at moment Pope Francis was receiving Bishop Castellani.

Pope Francis: ‘Christianity threatened by rampant relativism’
31 August 2018, 12:53
Pope Francis greets the Oblates of Saint Joseph (Vatican Media)
Speaking to participants in the General Chapter of the Oblates of St. Joseph on Friday, Pope Francis says the Christian faith is threatened by the rampant relativism of modern society
.
By Devin Watkins
Pope Francis says we live in times of “rampant relativism that undermines the edifice of faith at its base and strips the very idea of Christian fidelity of its meaning.”
The Holy Father made the comments in a speech on Friday to the Oblates of St. Joseph (OSJ) who are gathered in Rome for their General Chapter.
The Pope also gave a special greeting to Fr. Jan Pelczarski, the Order’s new Superior General, and to Fr. Michele Piscopo, his outgoing predecessor.
Intolerant rationalism and rampant relativism
Pope Francis said the Order’s Founder, St. Joseph Marello, lived in a time of rationalism that was intolerant of every spiritual dogma.
Given the similarities with our own culture, the Pope said the Saint’s witness is more relevant than ever.
“Faced with a superficial culture that exalts the possession of material goods and promises happiness through dangerous shortcuts,” he said, the Oblates of St. Joseph, “do not fail to stimulate young people to temper the spirit and to form a mature personality, capable of strength but also tenderness.”

Pope Francis invites all to unite in prayer for our common home
31 August 2018, 16:47
People all over the world join in praying for the Care of our Common Home on September 1
Pope Francis invites all to pray on the fourth World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, September 1, and says he is thankful for the “various initiatives” planned in various places by various religious denominations
.
By Sr Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp
Once again, Assisi is the place where prayers will be offered on Saturday, September 1, on the fourth World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation initiated by Pope Francis. In the General Audience on Wednesday, Pope Francis mentioned the event which, he said, “we celebrate in union with our Orthodox brothers and sisters, and with the participation of other Churches and Christian communities”. For the first time, this prayer event is ecumenical in nature, and kicks off the Season of Creation which lasts until 4 October.
World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation
Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios proclaimed September 1 as Creation Day for the Orthodox in 1989, followed by other Christian European Churches in 2001, and by Pope Francis in 2015. This year, for the first time, the prayer service for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation in Assisi is ecumenical and coincides with the start of the Season of Creation. “I am grateful,” Pope Francis said in the General Audience, “for the various initiatives organized in different places by Churches, Institutes of consecrated life, and ecclesial organizations”. The Pope’s invitation is open to “everyone to unite in prayer, on Saturday, for our common home, for the care of our common home”.

Pope Francis is urging the men and women of our time to be responsible for others and our common planet and contribute more concretely so that all may share the precious resources of the earth.
Responsibility for others, the earth
“Each of us also has a responsibility for others and for the future of our planet. In a similar way, the economy must serve man, not exploit him and rob him of his resources,” the Pope said on Saturday to a group of 100 entrepreneurs who have gathered in Rome for an event called the “Roman Forum” on the occasion of the September 1 World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, on Saturday.
The group is discussing Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical “‘Laudato Si’, on care for our common home”, in order to commit themselves more adequately to sustainability. Later in 2015, the Pope instituted the Catholic Church’s World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation that is celebrated annually on September 1.

Estonians pray and fast on Sept. 1 for Pope’s upcoming visit

The Catholics of Estonia are dedicating Saturday to fasting and praying in preparation for the visit of Pope Francis to their capital Tallin in less than a month’s time.
The September 1 initiative is an invitation that Bishop Philippe Jourdan, the Apostolic Administrator of Estonia, made in a letter to his Catholics dated July 22.
Pope Francis is scheduled to visit the three Baltic nations of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, September 22 to 25. He is visiting Lithuania, August 22-23, Latvia, August 24 and Estonia, August 25.
Spiritual preparation
“Fasting and prayers go always hand in hand,” Bishop Jourdan wrote in his letter. “Therefore, I ask you also to devote at least one day to fasting with the same intention. This day could be Saturday, 1 September,” he suggested.
Recalling that the month of August has several Marian commemorations such as the feasts of Our Lady of the Snows, August 5, the Assumption, August 15, the Queenship of Mary, August 22 and the Estonian pilgrimage to St. Mary’s Chapel in Viru-Nigula on 25 August, Bishop Jourdan said, “during these days of worship of God’s Mother, I ask all of us to devote our Rosary prayers to the success of the visit of Pope Francis.”

Pope Angelus: vigilance against hypocrisy, worldly contamination
02 September 2018, 12:14
Pope Francis during the Angelus in St Peter's Square (AFP or licensors)
Pope Francis during his Angelus on Sunday tells the faithful to look to the true meaning of religion which is, remaining faithful to the Word of God and being vigilant against the pollution of hypocrisy, vanity and greed
.
Before the recitation of the Marian Prayer, Pope Francis reflected on Sunday’s Gospel reading from Mark in which Jesus addresses the objections of scribes and Pharisees who accuse his disciples of not following traditional ritual precepts. The Pope explained that, Our Lord knows he is being tested, but he wants to draw these men away from the error in which they have fallen, that is, “to overthrow the will of God by neglecting his commandments to observe human traditions.”

Pope at Mass: ‘the truth is humble, the truth is silent’
03 September 2018, 12:21
Pope preaching at Casa Santa Marta
On Monday, Pope Francis resumed the celebration of daily Mass at Casa Santa Marta, commenting on the Gospel of the day saying that “the truth is humble, the truth is silent
”.
By Sr Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp
Pope Francis focused his homily on Monday at Casa Santa Marta on the Gospel of the day from Luke (4:16-30) when Jesus returns to Nazareth and meets opposition in the synagogue after commenting on a passage from the prophet Isaiah. The Pope highlights Jesus’ silent composure not only in this scene but also during the passion.
No prophet is accepted….
The Pope said that when Jesus arrived at the synagogue, he aroused curiosity. Everyone wanted to see the person they had heard was working miracles in other places. Instead of satisfying their curiosity, the Pope said, the Son of the Heavenly Father uses only “the Word of God”. This is the attitude Jesus adopted when confronting the devil. The Pope then said that Jesus’ humility opens the door to his first words meant to construct a bridge but instead sow doubt immediately changing the atmosphere “from peace to war”, from “amazement to fury”.
Jesus’ silence
Jesus responds with silence before those “who wanted to throw him out of the city”, the Pope said.
They were not thinking, they were shouting. Jesus stayed silent… The Gospel passage ends with: ‘But he passed through the midst of them and went away’.

An analysis...

Benedict, Viganò, Francis, and McCarrick: Where things stand on nuncio’s allegations
by JD Flynn
Denver, Colo., Sep 3, 2018 / 07:00 am
(CNA).- On its face, the arc of Archbishop Viganò’s story is straightforward.
In a testimony released Aug. 25, Archbishop Carlo Viganò wrote that in 2006, he sent a memo to his Vatican superiors, which said that Cardinal Theodore McCarrick had a history of sexual misconduct with seminarians and priests and that an example should be made of him for the good of the Church.
Viganò claimed that his memo was ignored, and so he sent a second one in 2008. That one, he said, had its desired effect. His testimony said he was told that Pope Benedict XVI imposed “canonical sanctions” on McCarrick in 2009 or 2010, forbidding him from living in a seminary, celebrating sacraments publicly, and from making other kinds of public appearances.
Finally, Viganò alleged that Pope Francis knowingly ignored Benedict’s sanctions on McCarrick, and made the cardinal one of his closest advisors. For that, Viganò said, Pope Francis should resign.
The story is simple, but the the fallout from the Viganò testimony has become quite complex.
Catholics of all theological perspectives could do justice for abuse victims through an unbiased investigation of facts. Viganò's memo raises questions that, whatever the answers, seem to merit serious inquiries. It remains to be seen whether those opposing such an investigation, including some prominent bishops and cardinals, will relent, or at least better articulate their positions. It also remains to be seen whether Pope Francis will support such an investigation, making files available, and breaking his silence on Viganò’s story.

EXCLUSIVE: Viganò reveals what really happened when Pope Francis met privately with Kim Davis
ROME, August 31, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) – Less than a week after publishing his extraordinary 11-page testimony implicating Pope Francis and several senior prelates in a cover-up of Archbishop Theodore McCarrick’s sexual abuse of priests and seminarians, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò has now decided to reveal, for the first time, the details surrounding Pope Francis’ meeting with Kim Davis during his visit to the United States in 2015.
In a written statement, dated August 30, 2018 (see the Italian and English texts below), Archbishop Viganò, who served as papal nuncio to the United States from 2011-2016, says he was prompted to speak out after reading an August 28, 2018 New York Times article, in which Juan Carlos Cruz, a Chilean sexual abuse victim, says the Pope “recently told him Archbishop Viganò nearly sabotaged the visit by inviting the critic, Kim Davis, a Kentucky county clerk who became a conservative cause célèbre when she refused to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples.”
Davis was jailed for five days, in 2015, for defying a court order to grant marriage licenses, on the grounds that she had personal religious objections to same-sex “marriage.”
According to the New York Times report, the Pope allegedly told Cruz: “I didn’t know who that woman was, and [Archbishop Viganò] snuck her in to say hello to me — and of course they made a whole publicity out of it.”
“I was horrified and I fired that nuncio,” Cruz recalled the Pope saying.
Catholic and secular media soon picked up on the New York Times story, with headlines such as: “I fired that nuncio” over Kim Davis meeting, Pope Francis reportedly said of Archbishop Viganò; and Kentucky’s Kim Davis might have played a role in Vatican infighting.
In the introduction to his three-page statement, Archbishop Viganò writes: “Faced with the Pope’s reported statement, I feel obliged to recount the events as they really unfolded.”
