Pope at General Audience: “Indifference kills”
17 October 2018, 11:03
Pope Francis greets pilgrims in St Peter's Square before the weekly General Audience (Vatican Media )
Pope Francis reflects on the Fifth Commandment “Do not kill”, and says that insult and contempt can kill as well[/color
.
By Seàn-Patrick Lovett
This week’s General Audience took place in an overcast St Peter’s Square before pilgrims and visitors from all over the world. The Holy Father continued his reflections on the Ten Commandments, this time focusing on the Fifth: “Do not kill”.
Deeper meaning
Pope Francis said that, read in the context of St John’s Gospel, “Jesus reveals a deeper meaning of this commandment”. Even anger against a sister or brother “is a form of murder”. But Jesus does not stop at this, continued the Pope: in the same logic, Jesus adds that even insult and contempt can kill.
“It would be nice if this teaching of Jesus were to enter into our minds and hearts”, said Pope Francis, “because Jesus says to us: ‘If you despise, if you insult, if you hate, this is murder’ ".

Pope tells Jesuits clericalism a ‘perversion’ in the Church

ROME - Speaking to his brother Jesuits in Lithuania last month, Pope Francis solicited their support in moving forward the work of the Second Vatican Council
.
“I believe the Lord wants a change in the Church,” he told 28 Jesuits during a private meeting during his trip to the Baltics. “I have said many times that a perversion of the Church today is clericalism…I know that the Lord wants the Council to make headway in the Church.”
“Historians tell us that it takes 100 years for a Council to be applied,” he added. “We are halfway there. So, if you want to help me, do whatever it takes to move the Council forward in the Church.”
The pope’s remarks were published
in full
on Wednesday by the Vatican vetted Jesuit journal La Civiltà Cattolica.
Among the other topics the pope addressed were concerns of vocational burnout by Jesuit priests, the need for ongoing ecumenical dialogue, the importance of Jesuit education, and how the sacrament of confession must be marked by mercy.

Conscience and Vocational Discernment Figure in Latest Small Group Reports
But some key topics continue to be omitted as we obtain some of the names of those in the small groups who have so far remained secret.
Edward Pentin
The small groups’ reports on part two of the instrumentum laboris, or working document, of the Youth Synod, were released today and primarily covered various aspects of vocational discernment
.
Many of the language groups had similar reflections on the topic which included accompaniment of young people and the place of conscience
.
English Group A recommended that the final document present a “clear definition of vocation, rooted in a theology, anthropology and ecclesiology which reflect the signs of the times.”
Some have criticized the Synod for topics it has omitted. As mentioned in the Register last week, there is still no mention of Humanae Vitae and issues related to contraception, nor is there much on young persecuted Christians, or how the Church could help the young to combat the “culture of death.”
The full texts of the small groups reports on Part II of the Instrumentum laboris can be read
here.

Synod of Bishops on Young People: Becoming digital missionaries
17 October 2018, 15:38
Synod on Youth General Assembly
Today at the Synod briefing the press were told that a repeated theme in conversation in the Synod assembly was how the Church can be part of the digital world. For this, the Church needs “digital missionaries”.
By Russell Pollitt, SJ
Dr Paolo Ruffini, Prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for Communications, started the briefing by listing a number of issues that had been spoken about in the general congregation of the Synod. He said that migration, both internally and externally in countries, was a hotly debated issue. Young people are, he said, concerned about the stewardship of creation. He said that the assembly heard that young people react negatively to corruption in politics. He also noted that it was said that young people want the Church to be a place of excellence. Other issues that arose included conscience, truth and mercy, teaching in catholic schools and universities and how drug use and alcoholism often led young people to crime.
Present at the briefing today was David Bartimej Tencer, O.F.M. Cap., bishop of Reykjavík, Iceland; Rev Fr Abott Mauro Giorgio Giuseppe Lepori, O. Cist., Abbot General of the Order of Cistercians; Fr. Alois, Prior of the Taizé Ecumenical Community, France; and Fraternal Delegate Pastor Marco Fornerone from the World Communion of Reformed Churches.
The Digital World
Dr Ruffini said that the issue of the pastoral care of young people in the digital world was discussed. The Synod pondered how the Church can be active in the world of social media where young people are. The Church, he said, wants to dwell in the digital world in an official and serious way. How should the Church form missionaries for the digital world and have people in the digital world who are protagonists of freedom and responsibility? The Church wants to be part of the digital world in a more structured way, he said.

Pope Mass: The three forms of poverty
18 October 2018, 11:43
2018.10.18 Messa Santa Marta (Vatican Media)
This morning in his homily during Mass at the Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis dwells on the three ways of living poverty in the life of the Christian and reflects that even today there are many Christians persecuted for the Gospel.
In this morning's Mass at the Casa Santa Marta, the Pope speaks of the three forms of poverty to which the disciple is called: the first is to renounce riches, with a heart detached from money, the second is to accept persecution, large or small, even slander, because of the Gospel, and the third is the poverty of loneliness, to feel alone at the end of life. His reflection begins with the Collect Prayer, which emphasizes that through Saint Luke, the Lord wanted to reveal his predilection for the poor. The Gospel (Lk 10:1-9) then speaks of the sending of the 72 disciples into poverty - "do not carry a purse, bag or sandals" - because the Lord wants the disciple's path to be a poor one. The disciple attached to money or wealth is not a true disciple.

Vatican decides not to release names of bishops in Youth Synod small groups
Diane Montagna
ROME, October 18, 2018
(LifeSiteNews) —
The organizers of the Youth Synod currently underway in Rome have decided not to release the names of members of the small language groups, the Vatican announced today. While some see the move as fostering greater freedom to speak in the synod hall, it is leading others to question the transparency of synod organizers
.
At a press briefing on Wednesday, Paolo Ruffini, Prefect of the Secretariat for Communications, told LifeSite that the names of small group members “will not be made public
.” Ruffini said synod organizers have decided to withhold the names “not in order to hide” something, but rather to “manifest” the “discernment” at work in the synod.
“The Church is a body, united in the Spirit,” Ruffini said. Not releasing the lists of the small groups is therefore about manifesting “the communion of the Church, the Mystical Body,” rather than seeing the synod as a “parliament.”
“It’s a reason that [any] believer should understand,” he added.
Ruffini expanded on his comments at today’s synod briefing. In a tense exchange with veteran Vaticanist, Sandro Magister, Ruffini told journalists:
“The reason for which the lists of participants in the small groups is not being given out is to seek to show forth the spirit of the synod, which is a spirit of communion. The small groups express to us, in a manner of communion and collegiality, the will of the Synod Secretariat to not transform the synod into a debate about ‘who said what’ but to tell it for what it is: a communal reflection of the Church. This is the reason why the names of the individual participants of the small groups have not been given.”
Pressed by Magister on the apparent “inconsistency” of not releasing the names, as synod organizers had done at the 2015 Family Synod, Ruffini replied, “Every synod has its rules,” and added that he would pass on the suggestion.

Synod of Bishops: A Christian obligation to welcome migrants
18 October 2018, 16:22
Ethiopian Cardinal addressed the issue of migration at length today. He lamented how African migrants are treated in Europe.
By Russell Pollitt, SJ
The Synod assembly heard many interventions on the third part of the working document, the Instrumentum Laboris. Dr Paolo Ruffuni, Prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for Communications, began the press briefing by saying that the Synod decided to write a letter to young people and that a drafting committee has been setup
.
He listed a number of issues that arose from the assembly. These included the importance of helping young people read the Bible so that the young can rediscover the Scriptures. The importance of faith in action and community was emphasised as well as the need to rediscover fasting in the western world. The role of women was once again a topic of discussion. There needs to be a cultural conversion in the Church when it comes to the role of women, they need to be given an equal place in society and the Church. There was a proposal that a Synod on women should be convened, he said.
Dr Ruffini reported that it was suggested that a Pontifical Council or Dicastery for the young be set up. The head of should have the same powers as any other Council or Dicastery. It was said that a woman could head up this venture.
Issues affecting Africa were addressed, most especially the question of sustainable development. A lack of sustainable development leads to migration. The Church needs to look at development models and find an adequate one, if not we are always dealing with consequences (like migration) and not dealing with the systemic problems. The issue of slavery, which involves all countries, was also discussed.

Australian Youth to Synod: We Can’t Help Shape the Church Until the Church Forms Us
In a letter to the Synod, a group of young people criticize substituting the truth for policy-speak and call out senior prelates who deliberately use ambiguous language in the face of Christ’s teachings
.
Edward Pentin
Ambiguity and confusion over Catholic teaching is “neither charitable nor desired” by young people who instead want the Church to form them in the truth of Christ, a group of young Australians has told the Youth Synod.
In an Oct. 12 letter addressed to the Synod Fathers and all the assembly's participants (see full text below), 217 Australian university students and young professionals stress that young people “do not want to shape the Church before the Church can form us,” and that they are yearning for a “reliable moral compass.”

Update: Pontifical Commission for Latin America proposes synod on women
By Junno Arocho Esteves Catholic News Service
4.11.2018 1:04 PM ET
VATICAN CITY (CNS) --
The Catholic Church in Latin America must recognize and appreciate the role of women and end the practice of using them solely as submissive laborers in the parish, said members of a pontifical commission
.
In addition, at the end of their plenary meeting March 6-9 at the Vatican, members of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America proposed that the church hold a Synod of Bishops "on the theme of the woman in the life and mission of the church."
"There still exist 'macho,' bossy clerics who try to use women as servants within their parish, almost like submissive clients of worship and manual labor for what is needed. All of this has to end," said the final document from the meeting.
L'Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, reported April 11 that the theme of the four-day meeting, "The woman: pillar in building the church and society in Latin America," was chosen by Pope Francis.

Questions arise about Vatican official mentioned in Vigano report
Vatican City, Oct 18, 2018 / 11:52 am
(CNA).-
An Italian magazine has raised new questions about a Vatican official mentioned in the August “testimony” of Archbishop Carlo Vigano. The report from L’Espresso, an Italian newsweekly, could be seen to provide support for at least one claim made in Vigano’s controversial testimony
.
L’Espresso reported Oct. 12 that Venezuelan Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, 58, who began serving Oct. 15 as “sostituto” of the Vatican’s Secretariat of State, might have been dismissed from a seminary where he studied because he was thought by seminary administrators to have a homosexual orientation
.
As ‘sostituto’, the archbishop is tasked with overseeing much of the day-to-day business of the Vatican’s Curial offices.
On Oct. 18, L’Espresso added to its report, noting that Parra had a longtime close relationship with Cardinal Oscar Maradiaga, the coordinator of the pope’s C9 Council of Cardinals. Vigano had also noted their friendship.
The magazine also claimed that the archbishop had developed a friendship with Bishop Juan Jose Pineda, former auxiliary bishop of Maradiaga’s Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa, who in recent months had been accused of sexual misconduct involving seminarians and other adult men.
L’Espresso reported Oct. 18 that the Vatican declined to respond to its questions about Parra.

Feds open clergy abuse probe in Pennsylvania
Maryclaire Dale and Eric Tucker
Oct 18, 2018
ASSOCIATED PRESS
PHILADELPHIA -
Federal prosecutors have opened an investigation of child sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests in Pennsylvania, using subpoenas to demand secret files and testimony from high-ranking leaders in what victims’ advocates say is the first such probe ever launched by the U.S. Justice Department
.
The subpoenas, served last week, follow a scathing state grand jury report over the summer that found that 301 “predator priests” in Pennsylvania had molested more than 1,000 children over seven decades and that church leaders had covered up for the offenders.
The intervention by the federal government opens a new front of legal peril for the Catholic church, given that investigations into sexual abuse by clergy members have historically been handled exclusively by state and local authorities.

Pope at Mass: By reaching out we find the promised inheritance
19 October 2018, 11:26
Pope Francis contrasts the leaven of the Pharisees with the Holy Spirit’s leaven which leads Christians to reach out to others in the hope of “finding the inheritance” they have been promised
.
By Sr Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp
During his homily on Friday at Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis reflected both on the First Reading and on the Gospel of the Day. He contrasted the “leaven” of the Pharisees to the leaven of the Holy Spirit which leads to embracing the “inheritance” which the Lord left to everyone.
Leaven of hypocrisy
Pope Francis described the leaven of the Pharisees as the leaven of hypocrisy which allows self-centeredness to grow. This leaven applies to people who think only of appearances, he said. Should they meet someone in difficulty along their path, they turn their gaze away. “Jesus says that this leaven is dangerous” because it has no future, the Pope said.

Cardinal Parolin: The Pope is open to visiting North Korea
19 October 2018, 11:17
Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin
The Vatican Secretary of State says a visit to North Korea would require serious preparation and consideration. But it could also "give support to the process of peace and denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula
".
By Vatican News
Speaking to journalists during a book launch in Rome, the Cardinal Secretary of State confirmed that Pope Francis has expressed “his openness to going to Pyongyang”.
An expression of interest
What has already been published in the press is true, said Cardinal Parolin: namely, that the President of South Korea (when he was received in the Vatican on October 18) told the Pope that the North Korean President had expressed interest in having the Holy Father visit Pyongyang. And the Pope has said he would be open to such an invitation.

(CNA/EWTN News).-
In a new testimony Friday, Archbishop Carlo Vigano charged that Pope Francis has been negligent in his responsibilities to the Church, and responded to efforts to refute allegations he has made in recent months about Archbishop Theodore McCarrick and other ecclesiastical leaders
.
Vigano also denied charges that he is in rebellion against Pope Francis.
Responding to an Oct. 7 letter from the Vatican’s prefect for the Congregation for Bishops, Cardinal Marc Ouellet, Vigano said he is not urging anyone to “topple the papacy,” and that he prays for Pope Francis daily -- more than he has for any other pope -- urging the pontiff to “admit his errors, repent.”
However, Vigano’s Oct. 19 statement also defended his decision to “bear witness to corruption in the hierarchy of the Catholic Church,” which he called a painful decision. He said he believes his further silence would cause damage to souls and “certainly damn” his own.

Synod of Bishops: Ministering online
19 October 2018, 15:50
General Assembly Synod of Bishops on Youth (Vatican Media)
The sad reality of migrant youth and their families and how the Church should use the digital world was the focus of the daily Synod of Bishops on Youth, the Faith and Vocational Discernment press briefing
.
By Russell Pollitt, SJ
The mental health of migrants
Ms Yadira Vieyra from the USA is a young auditor at the Synod. She works alongside psychologists and other professionals with migrants. She says that many migrant families suffer from anxiety, distress and depression. This is often linked to violence. At the Synod she is trying to motivate the Church to take the mental health of migrants in the USA and other parts of the world seriously. The Church, she said, cannot minister to youth without ministering to their families too.
Ms Vieyra also addressed the issue of the role of women saying that she thought that it was unfortunate religious sisters were not able to vote at the Synod. Women can make interventions in the assembly but cannot vote. She said that women have a very important role and that they invest in the spiritual development of Church members.
Commenting on the issue of youth who identify as LGBTI, Ms Vieyra said that it is a challenge to minister to a group that feels attacked by the Church. She says that LGBTI Catholics often received poor pastoral care and feel the Church does not want them. This is not true for most Catholics, she said
As a newlywed, Ms Vieyra added that she thought that the accompaniment before marriage was good but feels that there needs to be a serious look at how young people are accompanied after marriage by the Church.
She said that the Synod has been a positive experience – some bishops have been willing to listen, learn and change. Others, she says, still need to be convinced about this.

Humanae Vitae: The Beauty of the True Nature of Marriage, of the Family and of Sexuality
Cardinal Parolin’s October 18 Intervention During Synod2018
•October 19, 2018 18:20•Anne Kurian•Synod18
The regulation of births doesn’t only touch the moral behavior of Christian couples, but it has a social, cultural and even political and universal dimension, stressed Cardinal Pietro Parolin. Intervening on October 18, 2018, at the presentation of the book “Birth of An Encyclical: Humanae Vitae in the Light of the Vatican Archives,” by Gilfredo Marengo, published by Libreria Editrice Vaticana (LEV), the Secretary of State commented on the timeliness of Paul VI’s document, 50 years after its promulgation
.
At the time, recalled Cardinal Parolin, “one began to feel the diffusion of processes that put the traditional family progressively in crisis.” Humanae Vitae “was charged with new emerging problems, taking care to avoid all disapproving tonality or nostalgia for past times,” reported “Vatican News.”
The objective of the encyclical, which was elaborated over five years, was to “trace the great lines of Christian spirituality, of the conjugal vocation and life,” in particular on the subject of “responsible paternity-maternity,” which is “an important element of the whole of conjugal and family spirituality,” having a “vocation to perfection,” he said.
