"The Archbishop of Panama inaugurates the 34th World Youth Day with Mass in Panama City..."

AB Ulloa: Young People Protagonists of WYD Panama

The Archbishop of Panama inaugurates the 34th World Youth Day with Mass in Panama City and confirms that change in the Church and in humanity is in the hands of youth.
By Seàn-Patrick Lovett

The words of the Archbishop of Panama were music to the ears of the young people gathered for the Mass inaugurating the 34th World Youth Day: “We believe in you. We hope in you”, he said. “The change and transformation that humanity and the Church requires are in your hands”. It fell to Archbishop José Domingo Ulloa Mendieta, as Metropolitan Archbishop of Panama, to celebrate the Mass that marked the official opening of WYD celebrations. His homily was a summary of his own, and of the young peoples’, expectations for this event which takes place, at the international level, every three years.

Openness to hearing God

One of the key passages of the Archbishop’s homily was a confession: “Sometimes we adults think that young people don’t want to listen”, he said. “You need direction and accompaniment from us”, he continued, “but, above all, for us to listen to you”. Archbishop Mendieta continued by admitting that young people are “not easily impressed”. “Young people search for witnesses”, he said, “references filled with content and experience”. Rather than listening to someone talking about God, “you search for someone to show you God with their life”, he said.

Pope Francis departs for Panama  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis departed Wednesday for Panama where he will participate in the events of the 34th World Youth Day. This marks the Pope's first journey in 2019.

The Pope departed on an Alitalia flight from Rome's Fiumicino Airport at 9.51am (local) and will land in Panama at around 10:30 p.m. Italian time.  Upon arrival at Panama's Tocumen International Airport, the Pope will go directly to the Apostolic Nunciature, where he will stay for the duration of the visit.

His journey will get underway in earnest on Thursday with an official welcome at the Presidential Palace and a meeting with authorities and diplomats. Later in the day, Pope Francis will meet with Bishops from Central America. The highlight of Thursday, however, will be the opening of the World Youth Day ceremony at the Coastal Belt at 17.30 local time.

In a tweet before his departure the Pope said, "I am leaving for the World Youth Day in Panama. I ask you to pray for this very beautiful and important event on the path of the Church."

Pope Francis said he would be going to Japan in November, and urged people to “get ready.”

The Holy Father’s remarks came aboard the flight to Panama, in response to a question from a Japanese journalist asking if the Pope was planning a trip to his country. Pope Francis said he also wanted to visit Iraq, but that the local Bishops say it is not safe at the moment.

WYD Panama: Pope Francis arrives and World Youth Day begins
23 January 2019, 23:14

Children greet Pope Francis as he arrives in Panama  (Vatican Media)
For thousands of young people, the arrival of Pope Francis in Panama on Wednesday afternoon marks the true beginning of the 34th World Youth Day.
By Seán-Patrick Lovett

There were those who had waited at the airport all day. And it was hot (33°C not counting the horrendous humidity).

There were those who had practiced their dance routines for months. And they added elegance and energy to the event. There were those who had created costumes and national dresses for the occasion. And they brought colour and culture to this historical Panamanian afternoon.

2019

The flying time from Rome to Panama City is just under 13 hours. And there’s a 6-hour time difference. So Pope Francis looked justifiably tired as he walked down the steps of the Alitalia aircraft and greeted Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela Rodríguez and the First Lady. With head bowed he listened attentively to the national anthems of the Holy See and Panama, respectively, and shook hands with the authorities present.

Then, just as the security detail was dutifully ushering him into the waiting car, the Pope turned and waded into the crowd that had been trying frantically to grab his attention in every way possible.

That’s when his demeanour changed dramatically. At the sight of the smiling, flushed and excited faces (not to mention the beautiful babies thrust at him from every direction), Pope Francis became suddenly animated. It was as though he had just woken up. Every sign of fatigue disappeared as he waved, hugged, blessed and beamed with obvious delight.

WYD in Panama: Pope Francis calls Panama “a land of dreams”
24 January 2019, 17:11

Pope Francis greets Panama's authorities and diplomatic corps  (Vatican Media)
Speaking to Authorities, members of Civil Society and the Diplomatic Corps in Panama City, Pope Francis challenges the country to be a land of encounter, convocation, and dreams.
By Seán-Patrick Lovett

A quote from a South American revolutionary, the words of a popular prayer, and the verse of a poem by a national hero. That’s how Pope Francis chose to address Panama’s President, decision-makers, and members of the Diplomatic Corps, in his first public discourse since arriving in this Central American nation.

Simon Bolívar

“If the world had to choose its capital, the Isthmus of Panama would be marked out for this great destiny”. Thus spoke Simon Bolívar. The 19th century military hero, political statesman, and revolutionary icon, dreamed of unifying what today we call Latin America. He convoked the leaders of his time in the hopes he could convince them to share his dream of a Great Fatherland.

Pope holds up example of St Oscar Romero to Central American Bishops
24 January 2019, 18:41

Pope Francis speaks to Central American Bishops in Panama  (Vatican Media)
In Panama for WYD, Pope Francis meets with the Bishops of Central America and references St Oscar Romero, the recent Synod on Young People, and the kenosis of Christ.
By Seán-Patrick Lovett

Unless you are a theologian, the word kenosis is not one you are likely to encounter every day. It comes from Greek and is used by St Paul in his Letter to the Philippians to describe how Jesus “emptied Himself” in order to be totally open and receptive to the will of His Father.

The Bishops of Central America are theologians. They understood exactly what the Pope was referring to. All the more so because kenosis is a word St Oscar Romero uses to describe what the Church needs to be: a humble and poor Church. Because “in the Church, Christ lives among us”.

Pope to youth at WYD Panama: the Church isn’t “cool”–it’s “love"
25 January 2019, 01:21

Welcoming ceremony and opening of World Youth Day 2019 in Panama  (Vatican Media)
At the Welcoming Ceremony of the 34th World Youth Day, before thousands of young pilgrims, Pope Francis shares his vision of a Church that dreams, and loves.
By Seán-Patrick Lovett

The party began at dawn. As the sun rose over the Panama Canal, colourful groups of flag-waving, singing, swinging, World Youth Day pilgrims were already on the march. Their destination: the 2.5km-long Coastal Beltway, called the Cinta Costera, that flanks the Pacific Ocean on one side, and the Panama City skyline on the other.

The Location

The scenic beauty of the location, its easy accessibility and size, made it the perfect choice to host the Welcoming Ceremony and Official Opening of the 34th World Youth Day. Throughout the day, pilgrims were animated and entertained by music, song and dance. So by the time Pope Francis arrived, driven through the crowd in his white popemobile, everyone was, as they say in the trade, thoroughly warmed up and rearing to go.

The programme

Pope Francis looked in his element: affectionately holding hands with five young WYD  representatives, gratefully accepting their gift of a locally woven papal stole, attentively watching the multicultural performances of the WYD anthems, actively listening to the multilinguistic presentations of the WYD patron saints (Oscar Romero, Martin de Porres, Rose of Lima, John Bosco, Juan Diego and, of course, John Paul II).

The Pope’s words

Then it was the young peoples’ turn to listen to the Pope. “Peter and the Church walk with you”, he began. “We want to tell you not to be afraid, to go forward with the same fresh energy and restlessness that helps make us happier and more available…not to create a parallel Church that would be more ‘fun’ and ‘cool’ thanks to a fancy youth event”.

Pope Francis acknowledged the sacrifices faced by many of the young people in getting here. But, he reminded them, “a disciple is not merely someone who arrives at a certain place, but one who sets out decisively, who is not afraid to take risks and keeps walking”. “This is the great joy”, the Pope insisted, “to keep walking”.

WYD Panama: Pope tells young detainees 'We are more than labels'

By Seán-Patrick Lovett

You know you’ve arrived at the prison when you turn a corner and suddenly come up against a 12-foot high concrete wall topped with rolls of barbed wire. Through the guarded security gates you catch a glimpse of low buildings all painted different colours.

They call it a Detention Centre. But it’s still a prison. They call the young detainees Juveniles in Custody. But they’re still prisoners. The youngest is 14, the oldest 25. They are here to serve sentences of one to twelve years for crimes that range from petty theft, to drug dealing, to murder. And they’ve been preparing for Pope Francis’ visit for months.

Pope at WYD Via Crucis: Standing beneath the Cross like Mary

Pope Francis at Via Crucis  (AFP or licensors)
At the WYD Way of the Cross in Panama, Pope Francis proposes the example of Mary, standing at the foot of the Cross, and continuing to say “Yes”.
By Seàn-Patrick Lovett

The Way of the Cross is one of the most beautiful and emotional of all WYD traditions. Tastefully combining culture, spirituality, and devotional drama, the Via Crucis invariably remains one of the most memorable and impactful of all World Youth Day events.

Those who were there can never forget 2008 in Australia. The 12thStation, especially, where the Crucifixion took place at sunset against the backdrop of Sydney Harbour Bridge. Or 2013 in Brazil, where the scenes representing Christ’s passion and death evolved in a series of tableaux vivant along Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach.

Homage to St John Paul II

The Via Crucis in Panama 2019 paid homage to the Pope who began the World Youth Day tradition 34 years ago. The 14 Stations are based on those composed by Saint John Paul II for the spiritual exercises he preached, when still a Cardinal, to the papal household in the Vatican in 1976. As a priest, and later as Pope, Karol Wojtyla used to pray the Way of the Cross every day.

Each Station includes a reflection on a theme that connects the reality of young people, with the Martyr Church: the poor, vocations, ecumenism, indigenous peoples, ecology, refugees and migrants, hope, violence against women, human rights, corruption, motherhood, terrorism, abortion.

Pope Francis on Saturday met young Poles who made it to the World Youth Day in Panama on their sailing ship, "Dar Mlodziezy".
By Robin  Gomes

Pope Francis on Saturday met a group of young sailors from Poland who arrived for the World Youth Day in Panama on a sailing ship.  Before setting out from the Apostolic Nunciature in Panama City for the morning Mass at the city’s cathedral, the Holy Father met the delegation of the crew and youth of the sailing ship, “Dar Młodzieży”, or “Gift of Youth”.

They are 40 young Poles who are navigating around the world with WYD Panama as their final destination and to commemorate the centenary of the regaining of Polish independence.  Accompanying the group was also the Polish Minister of Maritime Economy and Inland Navigation, Marek Gróbarczyk.

Pope Francis had addressed this group during his weekly General Audience of June 20, 2018, in the Vatican.  "I cordially greet the Polish pilgrims and especially the representatives of the youth, who sail around the world on the vessel, "Dar Młodzieży", before reaching Panama, the place of WYD next January. ”

Pope’s homily at Mass in Panama: “The weariness of hope”
26 January 2019, 17:01

Pope Francis reconsecrates the altar of Panama's Cathedral  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis celebrates Holy Mass and consecrates an altar in the newly-restored Cathedral of Santa Maria La Antigua in Panama City, warning against the weariness of hope.
By Seán-Patrick Lovett

On the outside, the Cathedral of Santa Maria La Antigua, in Panama City’s Old Town, looks just like what it is: an 18th century Spanish colonial-style church. On the inside, a major restoration and restyling blends elements in wood with red, black and white marble, to produce something completely new and contemporary. In the words of Pope Francis: “It no longer belongs only to the past, but it is a thing of beauty for the present”.

The Pope was at the Cathedral to celebrate Mass with priests, men and women religious, and members of lay movements, who had come from all over Central America, and beyond.

He was also there to consecrate the new altar, complete with its relics of four of the WYD patron saints: Oscar Romero, Rosa of Lima, Martin de Porres and, naturally, John Paul II. For nearly 1,000 years, altars were built over the tombs of saints and martyrs, so the inclusion of relics in them nowadays, is another sign of continuity.

WYD Panama: Pope calls sexual abuse ‘a horrible crime’

At lunch on Saturday with 10 young participants in WYD in Panama, Pope Francis responds to a question from a US pilgrim regarding the clerical sexual abuse crisis.
By Devin Watkins

“The Holy Father reminded us that it is important to accompany the victims [of clerical sexual abuse], that it is important to walk with the people and to be present to them, that it is important for us to be a united Church.”

That was how a young WYD pilgrim from the US described Pope Francis’ response to her question about the clerical sexual abuse crisis.

“He called it a horrible crime,” she said.

Brenda Berenice Noriega, a youth minister in the Diocese of San Bernardino, California, was speaking at a press conference on Saturday.

Pope Francis addresses 600,000 young people at Panama City’s Metro Park for the WYD Vigil and challenges them to imitate Mary, the “influencer” of God.
By Seàn-Patrick Lovett

Three lives. Three stories. Three testimonies to faith, hope and love. These were the inspirations behind Pope Francis’ reflections to the 600,000 young people gathered for the World Youth Day Vigil in Metro Park, outside Panama City, on Saturday night.

Life stories, and love stories. “The Lord is the first to say ‘yes’”, said the Pope. “And He wants us to say ‘yes’ along with Him”, as He invites us “to be part of a love story”. Pope Francis presented Mary as the supreme example of how to say ‘yes’ and to “trust in the love and promises of God”. It is this, he said, that makes Mary, “the ‘influencer’ of God”.

Pope to Youth at WYD Mass: “You are the Now of God”
27 January 2019, 15:55

Pope Francis celebrates the closing Mass for the 34th World Youth Day in Panama, announces the next WYD venue, and tells young people to keep saying “Yes”.
By Seàn-Patrick Lovett

The secret is out: everyone knows that the next World Youth Day will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2022. The announcement was made at the end of the closing WYD Mass which Pope Francis celebrated in Panama City’s Metro Park on Sunday morning before 700,000 people.

“With Mary, keep saying “yes” to the dream that God has sown in you”, he told them. But the Pope’s concluding message to the hundreds of thousands of World Youth Day participants and pilgrims from all over the world can be summarized in one word: “Now”.

WYD Panama: Pope says Shelter shows 'Maternal face of the Church'
27 January 2019, 19:22

Pope Francis visits the Shelter of the Good Samaritan in Panama City  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis visits the Good Samaritan Shelter in a symbolic gesture of being close to all those who, because of illness or disability, were unable to attend WYD events.
By Seàn-Patrick Lovett

You might easily drive past the “Casa Hogar El Buen Samaritano” and not even notice. Tucked away in a side-street of a Panama City suburb, from the outside it looks just like any other house. There’s no sign or billboard to tell you this is no ordinary residence. Nothing to indicate that this is home to those who would otherwise have none.

No one comes here to die

All 18 of the guests in this house are living with HIV Aids, victims not only of the illness, but of the prejudice, ignorance and fear that accompanies it. Ranging in age from 16 to 60, they have been rejected and abandoned by their families. But, as the slogan for the structure indicates: “No one comes here to die”. They come instead to recover, and to  rediscover, a fuller dimension to their lives.
