Pope to Scholas Occurrentes: young people are the “now” of God

Pope Francis launches the “Programming for Peace” initiative, during a visit to the new Rome office of Scholas Occurrentes.

By Vatican News

Programming for Peace is a project that involves experts in new technologies, and will allow millions of young people around the world to “program” with an ethical perspective, committing themselves ever more strongly to the search for peace. The initiative was launched by Pope Francis himself, during a visit to the new Rome offices of Scholas Occurrentes on Thursday afternoon.

The objective of the Scholas network is to involve public and private schools in the realization of a dream: the transformation of the world into a classroom without walls, where all children, especially the poorest, can live and learn under the sign of peace and the common good. Today, Scholas is associated with over 450,000 educational agencies, located in 190 different countries.

During his visit on Thursday, Pope Francis held a video-conference with young people from around the world, and listened to testimonies from children who had participated in the artistic, sport, and technology programs promoted by Scholas. Taking part in the conference were young people from Panama and Portugal, from Romania, and from Italy.

Pope Francis on Friday wished that the evangelizing mission of Sts. Cyril and  Methodious  continue to be a model of inculturation for the Czech Republic and Slovakia in building a society based on mutual acceptance, solidarity, encounter and openness to others.

“As representatives of the people in the institutions, you are called to rediscover the intrinsic link between the Gospel and your cultural identity, re-evaluating your Christian roots in order to build a society in which mutual acceptance and mutual solidarity can take place,” the Pope told a delegation of parliamentarians from the Czech and the Slovak Republics who met him in the Vatican on the occasion of the 1150th death anniversary of St. Cyril.

ROME — Going on vacation or visiting new places should include more than just looking at all the attractions, Pope Francis said.

Tourism offers a chance to get to know people and places, to increase mutual understanding and respect, he said March 22 in a speech to members of Italy’s Youth Tourist Center. The center, which is part of Catholic Action, was celebrating the 70th anniversary of its founding.

“If I visit a city,” the pope said, “it is important that I know not just the monuments, but also that I realize the history behind it, how the people live, what challenges they are trying to face.”

“If I climb a mountain, not only must I keep within the limits that nature imposes, I must respect it, admiring its beauty and safeguarding the environment,” he added.

The pope praised the group’s latest campaign of promoting “slow tourism,” which is more concerned with personal encounters and exchanges than with “consumerism” and a competition of racking up “experiences.”

Pope Francis holds a Q&A session with the students of a Catholic school in Padua, and tells them to find their main point of reference in themselves, with the guidance of their priests, parents, and grandparents.
By Devin Watkins

“The most important point of reference for the choices we must make is found in yourself, in your own conscience.”

That was the advice Pope Francis gave on Saturday to a thousand-strong group of school-age children who attend the Barbarigo Catholic School in the Italian city of Padua.

The Holy Father was responding to a question posed by Sofia, a 13-year-old middle school student.

By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis on Saturday accepted the resignation of Cardinal Ricardo Ezzati, Archbishop of Santiago, Chile, pending an investigation into alleged clerical sexual abuse cover-up.

A Vatican statement said the Pope had named Bishop Celestino Aós Braco of the Chilean city of Copiapó, as “apostolic administrator” to run the Santiago archdiocese until a new archbishop is named to succeed Ezzati.

Santiago’s Court of Appeal on Friday rejected Cardinal Ezzati’s motion to dismiss the case and remove himself from the probe. Ezzati has repeatedly affirmed he never concealed child abuse committed by members of the clergy in his diocese or obstructed justice.

Pope Francis on Sunday addressed the faithful urging them to move out from their comfort zones and open their eyes and their hearts to those in need.

Reflecting on the Gospel reading on the third Sunday of Lent, the Pope explained it speaks to us of God's mercy and of our conversion.

He was addressing the crowds gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the Angelus Prayer. The parable narrated by Luke, he said, tells of a barren fig tree which the master of the orchard decided to cut down.

Pope in Loreto: Mary’s House a home for youth, families, sick
25 March 2019, 12:36

During a brief pastoral visit to the Italian city of Loreto, Pope Francis calls the House of Mary a home for young people, families, and the sick, where all can find hope in an oasis of silence and piety.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis celebrated Mass in the Sanctuary of the Holy House of Loreto on Monday, to mark the Feast of the Annunciation.

Tradition holds that the Virgin Mary lived within the relocated walls housed in the Sanctuary, and there received the Angel’s message of the Annunciation.

Following Mass, the Holy Father spoke to the 10,000-strong crowd of the faithful gathered in the square in front of the Basilica.

Pope Francis said the Sanctuary is “a privileged place to contemplate the mystery of the Incarnation of the Son of God,” since it is “the house of Mary.”

Many pilgrims, he said, come from around the world to the “oasis of silence and piety” to draw strength and hope, calling the Holy House of Loreto a home for the young, families, and the sick.

By John Waters

On the Feast of the Annunciation, Pope Francis signed his Apostolic Exhortation for the Synod on Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment.

“Christus vivit – Christ lives” is a letter to the world’s young people that represents the fruit of the October Synod. The Vatican will release the full text in the near future.

The Basilica of the Holy House in Loreto contains the walls of what tradition holds to be the house in which the Virgin Mary lived when the Angel Gabriel announced that she was to give birth to Jesus.

During his visit to Loreto, Pope Francis spoke about the Exhortation and explained that there are 3 sections to the document, which mirror 3 phases of the Synod process. To explain this further, he outlined this process whilst referencing the story of the Annunciation.

In Mary’s ‘Holy House’ in Loreto, Pope Francis Offers Post-Synodal Document ‘Christus Vivit’ on Youth to Virgin Mary
March 25, 2019 13:02•Deborah Castellano Lubov

It was announced by Director of the Holy See Press Office, Alessandro Gisotti, that the Exhortation “Christus Vivit,” will be published on April 2, “the memorial of the death of John Paul II.”

The wish, he expressed during a briefing in Loreto, is “to link together the two pontificates, so loved by and close to the younger generations.” Pope John Paul II had been the first Pope to address a letter to young people in 1985 and he was the Pope who began the World Youth Days.

After today’s Mass, Francis greeted the Community of Capuchin Friars in the sacristy. In the Sanctuary, the Pope greeted the sick present and went out to the churchyard of the Sanctuary to meet the faithful, where he offered an address before praying the Angelus.

In the Square, Francis recalled to the some 10,000 faithful present the words of the angel Gabriel to Mary telling her she would conceive a child who would save mankind from their sins and what this meant for the world.

“I think of Loreto as a privileged place where the young can come research their true vocation, at the school of Mary!” Francis shared, noting the House of Mary is also a “home of the family” and a “home of the ill.”

Pope Francis concluded, blessing those present and praying to Mary to help all people, especially the young, in their journey for peace, and to bring help and comfort to all those in difficulty.

Loreto: the Popes and young people
25 March 2019, 10:32

Pope Francis has chosen the Feast of the Annunciation to visit the Italian town of Loreto. Some of the highlights of his pastoral visit include Mass in the Holy House and the signing of the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation on the Synod on Youth that took place last October.

The event underscores the bond between the Popes, Loreto and young people, as witnessed by the fact that both Saint John Paul II and Benedict XVI also met with young people in Loreto.

This bond goes back much further in time. Loreto was a place of pilgrimage for the likes of Saint John XXIII, Pius II, Paul III, Pius VI, Pius VII, Gregory XVI and Pius IX.

Pope to beatify martyrs, visit Marian shrine on trip to Romania

ROME - Visiting Romania May 31-June 2, Pope Francis will stop at six destinations, including a popular Marian shrine in the Transylvanian region.

He also will beatify seven bishop-martyrs of the Eastern-rite Romanian Catholic Church, who died during a fierce anti-religious campaign waged under the communist regime in Romania.

His visit to the predominately Orthodox country will be his 30th foreign trip after visiting Morocco in late March and Bulgaria and Macedonia in early May.

The trip will include visits to the Romanian Orthodox and Roman Catholic cathedrals, celebration of a Latin-rite Mass and an Eastern-rite Divine Liturgy, as well as separate meetings with political leaders, young people and families as well as members of the Roma community.

He will visit the capital, Bucharest, the cities of Bacau, Iasi, Sibiu, Blaj and the Marian shrine in Sumuleu Ciuc, a neighborhood of Miercurea Ciuc and an important place of pilgrimage for Hungarian Catholics, especially on Pentecost, which is June 9.

The overwhelming majority - almost 82 percent - of Romania’s 20 million inhabitants say they belong to the Romanian Orthodox Church led by Patriarch Daniel. About 6 percent of the population identifies itself as Protestant and over 4 percent identify as Catholic, belonging either to the Romanian Catholic Church - an Eastern rite - or the Latin rite.

The Vatican released the following schedule March 25, leaving out the exact times for a number of events. Times listed are local, with Eastern Daylight Time in parentheses.

Friday, May 31 (Rome, Bucharest)

Pope Francis on Tuesday urged the city of Rome to use its energies to welcome and integrate people from Italy and the world over by fostering brotherhood and creating opportunities for the civic, cultural, economic and social development of all without fearing goodness and charity.

The Pope made the exhortation in a speech to the authorities and officials of Rome administration during a visit to the Capitoline Hill, the headquarters of Rome Municipality.  Pope Francis is the fourth pontiff to visit the Italian capital’s City Hall.

Pope Francis: New rules for religious life
26 March 2019, 17:49

Pope Francis changes the Code of Canon Law, to provide for the dismissal 'ipso facto' of religious who are illegitimately absent from their religious house for a full year.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis has made several changes to ecclesial canons concerning the dismissal of consecrated persons from the religious institutes to which they belong.

According to the revised canons, religious who have been “illegitimately absent” from their religious house for a full twelve months are dismissed ipso facto from their Institutes. The new canons also stipulate that the superior of the institute must gather evidence of facts and issue a declaration, which must be confirmed, for the dismissal to be legally recognized.

In his letter, with the incipit Communis vita, Pope Francis notes that “community life is an essential element of religious life”, and that religious cannot leave the common life without permission from their superior. In recent years, however, the Pope says there have been cases where religious have left their communities without that permission, and sometimes cannot be traced. Although canon law had provided for such cases, the Pope said it was sometimes difficult to provide a legal remedy, especially when the whereabouts of the religious was unknown.

It was for that reason, Pope Francis said, that he has decided to make changes to canon law by making a prolonged illegitimate absence from one’s religious house one of the reasons for dismissal, ipso facto, from one’s religious institute. In order for this dismissal to have legal effect, the declaration of the fact must be confirmed by the Pope, for institutes of pontifical right; or by the Bishop of the principal See, for institutes of diocesan right.

The new regulations were promulgated by publication in L’Osservatore Romano, and will go into effect on 10 April 2019. Subsequently, they will be published in the Acta Apostolicae Sedis.

Below, please find the full Latin text of the Apostolic Letter Communis vita, issued motu proprio, and dated 19 March 2019:

Founder, editorial staff of Vatican women's magazine resign

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Claiming a lack of support for open dialogue and for an editorial line run by women, the director and editorial staff of a Vatican women's magazine have resigned.

But the editor of L'Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, which publishes the magazine, countered that he has given the staff "the same total autonomy and freedom" that have marked its work since it began.

"There is a return to the clerical self-referentiality and an abandonment of that 'parrhesia' (courage) so often asked for by Pope Francis," said Lucetta Scaraffia, founder and director of "Women-Church-World," a monthly supplement to L'Osservatore Romano.

In December, Pope Francis appointed Andrea Monda, an Italian journalist and religion teacher, to be editor of L'Osservatore Romano.

The new management at the newspaper has not shown support for the magazine's mission and has tried to "weaken" it by launching initiatives that "seem competitive, with the result of pitting women against each other, instead of encouraging open discussion," Scaraffia wrote in an editorial that was to be published in the supplement's April 1 issue.

Scaraffia sent Catholic News Service a copy of the editorial March 26 and a copy of an open letter to Pope Francis, explaining their resignation.

Pope Francis expressed his sorrow for the loss of life, injury and damage caused by flash floods in northern Iran that have killed at least 26 people.

In a telegramme, signed on his behalf by the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Pope Francis on Wednesday conveyed his heartfelt solidarity with all those affected and said he is praying for the deceased.

The floods are being described as an “unprecedented natural disaster”.  Rescuers are still searching for survivors and hundreds have reportedly been injured in the country that is more accustomed to drought than to rain.

In his message, the Pope also said he is praying for the emergency personnel involved in rescue efforts and assured the people of Iran that he has invoked divine blessings of consolation and strength on those who grieve.
