Pope at Mass: hardened heart is unfaithful and slanders the Lord
28 March 2019, 14:34

Pope at Mass at Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican, 28.03.2019.   (Vatican Media)
Listen to the voice of the Lord so as not to end up with a hardened heart that discredits the Lord. This was the exhortation of Pope Francis in his homily during Mass, Thursday morning, at the Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican.
By Robin Gomes

The Pope warned against having a heart that does not listen to the voice of the Lord, saying, by doing so for "days, months, years", it becomes hard like soil without water.  And when there is something that one dislikes about God, he or she discredits and slanders Him.

Risk of infidelity

The Pope said that many times we are deaf and do not listen to the voice of the Lord, but always listen to the news and the gossip of the neighbourhood.

In the First Reading from the Book of Jeremiah, the Pope said, we hear God’s lamentation regarding the "stubborn people, who do not want to listen".  Instead of listening and turning to Him, they close their ears, turn their backs to Him and proceed obstinately according to their evil hearts.

Pope explains reluctant ring kiss: Fear of spreading germs

ROME - Pope Francis has set the record straight about why he pulled his hand away when throngs of people lined up this week to kiss his ring: for fear of spreading germs.

Vatican spokesman Alessandro Gisotti said Thursday that Francis was concerned about hygiene when, after greeting dozens of well-wishers in a lengthy receiving line Monday in Loreto, he began pulling his hand away to discourage people from kissing his ring.

Video of the incident went viral, with conservative critics blasting what they said was Francis’s “graceless” disrespect for the tradition and the faithful who wanted to honor it.

Gisotti said Thursday he had just spoken to the pope about it, and Francis replied that it was nothing of the sort.

“The Holy Father told me that the motivation was very simple: hygiene,” Gisotti told reporters. “He wants to avoid the risk of contagion for the people, not for him.”

Pope Francis greets people of Morocco ahead of visit
28 March 2019, 15:00

On the eve of his visit to Morocco, Pope Francis, in a video message, says he is coming to the country as a pilgrim of peace and fraternity.

Pope Francis will travel to Morocco from the 30th to the 31st March where he will celebrate Mass, travel to a migrant centre, run by the charity Caritas, and visit the Mohammed VI institute, which oversees the training and formation of Imams.

Peace and fraternity

In his video message, the Pope said he was coming to Morocco as “a pilgrim of peace and fraternity, in a world that greatly needs it.”

Pope Francis remarked that both Christians and Muslims believe in God the merciful Creator “who created men and women, and placed them in the world so that they might live as brothers and sisters, respecting each other’s diversity and helping each other in their needs.”

God entrusted to them the earth, our common home, he added, “to guard it responsibly and preserve it for future generations.”

“It will be a joy for me to share these convictions directly with you at the meeting we will have in Rabat”, he said.

Pope Francis issues new legislation for protection of minors
29 March 2019, 11:56

The Vatican on Friday released three new documents from Pope Francis concerning the protection of minors and vulnerable persons in the Vatican City State.
By Christopher Wells

“The protection of minors and vulnerable persons is an integral part of the Gospel message,” Pope Francis insists in the very first line of his Apostolic Letter. The Pope says that it is the duty of all “to generously welcome children and vulnerable persons, and to create a safe environment for them, giving priority to their interests”.

The new Law for Vatican City State will go into force on June 1 of this year; while the new Guidelines for the Vicariate, which are being implemented ad experimentum for three years, take effect immediately.

24 Hours for the Lord: Opportunity to embrace God’s mercy

24 hours for the Lord initiative
Now in its 6th year, Pope Francis opens the 24 Hours for the Lord on Friday in St Peter’s Basilica
By Lydia O’Kane

Pope Francis on Friday afternoon is due to preside over the opening of the traditional 24 Hours for the Lord. The penitential celebration will take place in St Peter’s Basilica and has been organized by the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization.

The theme for this year’s initiative is taken from the Gospel of John: Neither do I condemn you. (Jn 8:11).

The Pontifical Council says that, “On this day, which will be marked by Eucharistic Adoration, individual reflection and an invitation to personal conversion, we are invited to contemplate the image of Jesus who, unlike the crowd which gathers to judge and condemn the woman taken in adultery, offers His infinite mercy as an opportunity for grace and new life.”

Betraying internal forum is a sin, pope tells confessors
By Junno Arocho Esteves Catholic News Service

CNS photo/Vatican Media
VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- In confession, the privacy of one's conscience before God, also known as the internal forum, must always be protected and not be used to influence decisions outside the confessional, Pope Francis said.

Departing from his prepared text in a speech to priests and seminarians attending an annual conference on the internal forum March 29, the pope said he was worried about priests and superiors who have used information from the internal forum -- obtained from confession or spiritual direction -- to influence external decisions.

"Please, this is a sin," he said. "It is a sin against the dignity of the person who trusts the priest, who reveals his or her reality in asking forgiveness and is then used to fix something in a group, or perhaps a movement or a new congregation. But the internal forum is the internal forum. It is something sacred."

Analysis: Pope Francis issues new definition of ‘vulnerable’ adult
By Ed Condon

Vatican City, Mar 29, 2019 / 04:00 pm (CNA).- Pope Francis issued a new set of canonical norms Friday strengthening existing laws on sexual abuse for the Vatican City State and the Roman Curia.

The new norms introduce a mandatory reporting requirement for curial officials and employees who become aware of – or even suspect – a case of sexual abuse. But the most eye-catching change made by the pope was a redefinition of who can be a victim of sexual abuse.

Canon and Vatican City law obviously focus on the sexual abuse of minors. But in that same legal category is the abuse of “vulnerable” adults. How “vulnerable” adults are defined in law has been hotly contested in recent discussions of scandal and reform in the Church.

The new laws define a vulnerable person very broadly, including anyone “in an infirm state, of physical or mental deficiency, or deprivation of personal freedom, that in fact, even occasionally, limits their capacity to intend or to want or in any way to resist the offense.”

This represents a radical expansion of the definition currently being used by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith as it handles cases from dioceses around the world, in which a “vulnerable” is one who “habitually lacks the use of reason.”

The new formulation is notable for a number of reasons.

The first, and most obvious, is that it includes a range of cases not previously covered by the Church’s law. Coercive sexual relationships between, for example, bishops and seminarians have featured much in the debate over recent scandals, most notably following the revelations about former archbishop Theodore McCarrick.

In Africa, rain is always a good sign. Pope Francis landed at the Rabat-Salé airport shortly before 2pm to a rather wet and rainy day. He was met at the foot of the plane by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, for a very brief ceremony of greeting.

The rains did not dampen spirits of the people here. The King and his entourage were wearing traditional Moroccan attire known as djellaba.

After visiting the tombs of the rulers of Morocco in Rabat on Saturday, Pope Francis signed the Book of Honour where he prayed for Morocco and the growth of brotherhood and solidarity between Christians and Muslims.
By Robin Gomes

At the end of the first official speech of his apostolic visit to Morocco at the Tour Hassan, where he addressed the people, the authorities, representatives of civil society and the diplomatic corps, Pope Francis walked to the nearby Mausoleum of Mohammed V, a white marble building with green tiled roof.

Alongside the King and several officials with whom he had a long dialogue, the Holy Father visited the tombs of Mohammed V, considered the father of modern Morocco, and Hassan II.

He placed a floral tribute at the tombs, stood for a moment in silent prayer before proceeding to a table to sign the Book of Honour to mark his Morocco visit.

“On the occasion of my visit to this Mausoleum, I invoke Almighty God for the prosperity of the Kingdom of Morocco, asking Him to make brotherhood and solidarity between Christians and Muslims grow!” the Pope wrote, urging for prayers for him.

Pope Francis signs appeal for Jerusalem with King Mohammed VI  (Vatican Media)
On the first day of his visit to Morocco, Pope Francis joins King Mohammed VI in signing an appeal for Jerusalem, calling it “the common patrimony of humanity”.
By Vatican News

Shortly after his arrival in Rabat on Saturday, and following the official welcome ceremony and speeches, Pope Francis signed a special appeal, together with King Mohammed VI of Morocco.

The appeal recognizes the “uniqueness and sacredness of Jerusalem”, and calls for the city to be preserved as a “common heritage of humanity and especially for the faithful of the three monotheistic religions, as a meeting place and symbol of peaceful coexistence, where mutual respect and dialogue are cultivated”.

To this end they ask that "the specific multi-religious character, the spiritual dimension, and the peculiar cultural identity of Jerusalem / Al-Quds Acharif must be preserved and promoted".

Pope Reiterates Four-Point Theme for Migrants in Rabat Speech
March 30, 2019 19:11•Jim Fair

Pope Francis on March 30, 2019, repeated his four-point plan for meeting the needs of migrants, suggested in his Message for the 2018 World Day of Migrants and Refugees: accept, protect, promote and integrate.

The Holy Father spoke March 30, 2019, at the Rabat headquarters of Caritas to a group of migrants. The visit was part of his March 30-31 apostolic journey to Mocorro.

“Dear friends, I would like to reiterate the importance of these four verbs,” the Holy Father said. “They form a frame of reference for us all. For we are all involved in this effort – involved in different ways, but all involved – and all of us are needed in the work of building a more dignified, safe and fraternal life.

Temara is situated some 20km south of Morocco’s capital Rabat, along the road to Casablanca.

In this suburban area, three Daughters of Charity run the “Rural Center for Social Services”, providing around 150 children with material and psychological care.

Pope Francis took a moment during his Apostolic Visit to Morocco to greet these three sisters and the local Muslims for whom they care, during a private visit.

Pope in Morocco: ‘Ecumenism of charity’ allows religious to be neighbours to all
31 March 2019, 14:04

Pope Francis meets men and women religious in Rabat's Cathedral of Saint Peter, Morocco  (AFP or licensors)
Pope Francis addresses Morocco’s priests, Consecrated Men and Women and the Ecumenical Council of Churches, urging them to take advantage of the “ecumenism of charity”, so as to leave nobody behind.
By Francesca Merlo

Pope Francis begins his address by acknowledging that Christians in Morocco are, in fact, a minority. “Yet”, says the Pope, “to my mind, this is not a problem”. He realizes that at times “it can be difficult” for some people. Their situation, he says, reminds him of a question asked by Jesus: “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what should I compare it?”

Pope Francis has addressed clergy, male and female religious, and members of the World Council of Churches, in the Cathedral of Rabat, on his second day in Morocco. The Holy Father deviated from the text occasionally, speaking at times off the cuff, but we publish below the Vatican-provided text of the Pope’s prepared speech, and will send the complete, final text, as it becomes available.

Pope Francis' trip to Morocco, March 30-31, 2019

Pope in Marocco: Holy Mass on Sunday
31 March 2019, 16:12

Pope Francis arrives to celebrate Mass in the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex  (AFP or licensors)
Pope Francis celebrated Mass on Sunday afternoon for nearly 10,000 members of Morocco’s Catholic minority.

Pope Francis concluded his two-day visit to Morocco on Sunday celebrating Holy Mass for the nation’s catholic community at a Sports Complex in Rabat.

He focused his homily on the need to reject hatred, division and revenge while continuing to nurture a culture of mercy and welcome.

Please find below the full text of the Pope’s homily:

“While he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him” (Lk 15:20).

Here the Gospel takes us to the heart of the parable, showing the father’s response at seeing the return of his son.  Deeply moved, he runs out to meet him before he can even reach home.  A son long awaited.  A father rejoicing to see him return.

That was not the only time the father ran.  His joy would not be complete without the presence of his other son.  He then sets out to find him and invites him to join in the festivities (cf. v. 28).  But the older son appeared upset by the homecoming celebration.  He found his father’s joy hard to take; he did not acknowledge the return of his brother: “that son of yours”, he calls him (v. 30).  For him, his brother was still lost, because he had already lost him in his heart.

By his unwillingness to take part in the celebration, the older son fails not only to recognize his brother, but his father as well.  He would rather be an orphan than a brother.  He prefers isolation to encounter, bitterness to rejoicing.  Not only is he unable to understand or forgive his brother, he cannot accept a father capable of forgiving, willing to wait patiently, to trust and to keep looking, lest anyone be left out.  In a word, a father capable of compassion.

Pope inflight presser: 'He who builds walls will end up imprisoned by them'

2019.03.30 Papa Francesco saluta i giornalisti nel volo papale per il Marocco  (Andrea Tornielli)
Answering questions put to him by reporters on the papal flight back from Morocco, Pope Francis touched on various topics including dialogue with Islam, the need to protect the rights of migrants, and freedom of conscience.
By Linda Bordoni

During the flight bringing Pope Francis back to Rome after his two-day apostolic visit to Morocco,  Francis spent over half an hour chatting to reporters and answering questions on different subjects.

Christian-Muslim Dialogue

Asked what he thinks the consequences of this visit will be for world peace and dialogue between different cultures, Pope Francis said “I will say that now there are flowers, the fruits will come later”.

He expressed satisfaction for having been able to talk about peace, unity and fraternity during the visit to Morocco and also during the previous one to Abu Dhabi, during which he recalled the important Document on Human Fraternity that he signed together with the Grand Iman of Al-Ahzar.

He upheld the religious freedom he witnessed in Morocco and the respect with which all brothers and sisters are welcomed.

“This is a beautiful flower of coexistence that promises to bear fruit. We must not give up!” he said.
