Pope at Mass: Christians must not give in to failure
09 April 2019, 12:09

Pope Francis celebrates Mass at Casa Santa Marta
Pope Francis celebrates morning Mass at the Casa Santa Marta commenting on the “spirit of tiredness” that “takes away hope”.
By Linda Bordoni

Reflecting on the First Reading of the day, which is taken from the Book of Numbers, Pope Francis said that at times Christians “prefer failure”, leaving room for complaint and dissatisfaction, a perfect terrain, he said, for the devil in which to sow his seeds.

According to the Reading, the people of God, he explained, could not bear the journey: their enthusiasm and hope as they escaped slavery in Egypt gradually faded, their patience wore out, and they began muttering and complaining to God: “Why have you brought us from Egypt to die in this desert?”

“The spirit of tiredness takes away our hope,” the Pope remarked, adding that “tiredness is selective: it always causes us to see the negative in the moment we are living, and forget the good things we have received”.

“When we feel desolated and cannot bear the journey, we seek refuge either in idols or in complaint... (…) This spirit of fatigue leads us Christians to be dissatisfied (…) and everything goes wrong…  Jesus himself taught us this when he said we are like children playing games when we are overcome by this spirit of dissatisfaction.”

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith publishes new complementary norms for former Anglican ministers and lay faithful who have joined the Catholic Church.
By Devin Watkins

Released on Tuesday, the updated Complementary Norms for the Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum coetibus were approved by Pope Francis on March 8th and signed by Cardinal Luis Ladaria and Archbishop Giacomo Morandi, Prefect and Secretary of the CDF, respectively, on March 19, 2019.

Anglicanorum coetibus governs the institutions and Personal Ordinariates that minister to the lay faithful originally of the Anglican tradition, known as Episcopalians in the United States.

The updated Complementary Norms integrate the experience of the past 10 years and seek to make their application more in tune with the spirit of the Apostolic Constitution.

Currently, three Ordinariates of former Anglican ministers and lay faithful exist: the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham in England and Wales; the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter in the United States; and, the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross in Australia.

The new Norms introduce several modifications to those promulgated in November 2009.

This 9-year-old cancer patient who ‘never complained’ is now on the path to sainthood
By Courtney Grogan

Vatican City, Apr 8, 2019 / 10:38 am (CNA).- Pope Francis Monday recognized the heroic virtue of nine-year old Brazilian boy, who “never complained” during cancer treatments, but instead offered his suffering to Jesus.

Diagnosed in 1963 with osteosarcoma, Nelson Santana, then eight years old, asked his mother in the hospital one day to “promise Jesus not to complain in the face of suffering and pain.”

Pope at Audience: We are all sinners, who need forgiveness
10 April 2019, 12:22

Sharing the joy of the Gospel: Pope Francis greets the faithful at the weekly General Audience  (Vatican Media)
At Wednesday's General Audience, Pope Francis continues his catechesis on the “Our Father”, reflecting on the petition “Forgive us our debts”.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis connected last week’s reflection to his catechesis for this week, saying that, we need forgiveness, every day, in the same way that we need our “daily bread.”

“But even if we were perfect, even if we were ‘crystalline saints’” who never went astray, “we would always remain children who owe everything to the Father”, the Pope said, explaining how we are “indebted” to God.

VATICAN CITY - Pope Francis, who travels with journalists aboard the papal plane, is expanding his reach when he meets with members of Italy’s 400-strong foreign press association at the Vatican on May 18.

The Argentine-born Francis, the first pope from Latin America, occasionally gives interviews to foreign correspondents. But this will be the first time he will meet separately with such a large group of international journalists. The Vatican announced the move Wednesday.

Next task for pope's cardinal advisors: Women's leadership in the Vatican
By Hannah Brockhaus

Vatican City, Apr 10, 2019 / 09:49 am (CNA).- As Pope Francis’ council of cardinals wraps up the drafting of a new apostolic constitution, they have decided to take up the topic of management roles for women working in the Vatican.

Vatican spokesman Alessandro Gisotti told journalists April 10 that among proposed agenda items for subsequent meetings of the pope’s now-six member advisory group will be management positions for women in offices of the Holy See.

At a briefing on the council’s latest meetings April 8-10, Gisotti said that though the group’s primary work of reforming the Roman Curia through a new apostolic constitution is wrapping up, the advisory body will continue to assist the pope in governance of the Roman Curia.

Gisotti expects the council – formerly referred to as the “C9” – will seek input from women in their discussion of female leadership in the Vatican, as they have done for other topics in the past.

Benedict XVI Breaks His Silence on the Catholic Church’s Sex-Abuse Crisis
In a German-language essay published Thursday, the pope emeritus provides a way forward.
Edward Pentin

VATICAN CITY — In his most significant pronouncement since he resigned the papacy in 2013, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has written a lengthy essay on clerical sex abuse in which he explains what he sees as the roots of the crisis, the effects it has had on the priesthood, and how the Church should best respond.

Running at just over 6,000 words and to be published April 11 in Klerusblatt, a small-circulation Bavarian monthly, Benedict XVI places the blame mainly on the sexual revolution and a collapse of Catholic moral theology since the Second Vatican Council. This resulted, he argues, in a “breakdown” in the seminary formation that had preceded the Council.

Benedict criticizes canon law for initially being insufficient in dealing with the scourge, explains the reforms he introduced to deal with abuse cases, and asserts that “only obedience and love for our Lord Jesus Christ” can lead the Church out of the crisis.

The pope emeritus begins his essay, entitled “The Church and the Scandal of Sexual Abuse,” by noting that the “extent and gravity” of the abuse crisis has “deeply distressed” priests and laity and “driven more than a few to call into question the very faith of the Church.”

Recalling the Vatican’s Feb. 21-24 summit on the protection of minors in the Church, he says it was “necessary” to send out a “strong message” and seek a “new beginning” so the Church could again become “truly credible.”

Benedict writes that he compiled notes from the documents and reports from that meeting that culminated in this text, which he says he has shown to Pope Francis and Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican secretary of state.

Pope emeritus Benedict XVI: Return to God to overcome abuse crisis
11 April 2019, 15:19

Pope Francis greets Pope emeritus Benedict XVI (file photo)  (@vaticanmedia)
Pope emeritus Benedict XVI publishes his reflections on the scandal of sexual abuse in the Church, saying it was made possible by a progressive eclipse of faith in God.
By Sergio Centofanti

“The power of evil arises from our refusal to love God… Learning to love God is therefore the path of human redemption.” Pope emeritus Benedict XVI wrote those words in an article for the German periodical Klerusblatt, in which he reflects on the scourge of the sexual abuse of minors perpetrated by members of the clergy.

Benedict XVI takes his cue from February’s meeting on the protection of minors in the Church promoted by Pope Francis to send out “a strong message” and “to make the Church again truly credible as a light among peoples and as a force in service against the powers of destruction”. He affirms his desire to give his contribution to this mission “even though, as emeritus, I am no longer directly responsible”, and thanks Pope Francis “for everything he does to show us, again and again, the light of God, which has not disappeared, even today”.

Pope: human trafficking a crime of the “commercialization of the other"

By Robin Gomes

Pope Francis on Thursday condemned trafficking in human beings as one of the most dramatic manifestations of the “commercialization of the other”, a crime against humanity that disfigures both the victims as well as those who carry it out.

“Those who commit this crime do not only harm others, but also themselves.”  “In its many forms, it constitutes a wound ‘in the body of contemporary humanity’", a profound wound in the humanity of those who suffer it and those who carry it out,” the Pope told participants in a conference studying the implementation of the Pastoral Orientations on Human Trafficking by the Vatican’s Migrants and Refugees Section.

Pope Francis: peace, light, and hope are possible in South Sudan
11 April 2019, 17:39

At the Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis kisses the feet of leaders from South Sudan, including President, Salva Kiir Mayardit, and vice president designates Riek Machar and Rebecca Nyandeng De Mabio.
By Vatican News

A remarkable, spontaneous gesture. Breaking protocol, at the conclusion of his remarks at the end of the spiritual retreat, Pope Francis fell to his knees, kissing the feet of South Sudan’s civil authorities.

“To the three of you who signed the Peace Agreement, I ask you, as a brother, remain in peace”, the Pope said. “I ask you from the heart. Let us move forward. There will be many problems, but don’t be afraid, go forward, resolve the problems”. In impromptu remarks following his address, Pope Francis said, “You have started a process; may it end well. Although struggles will arise, he said, these should stay “within the office”. However in public, he said, “before the people: [keep your] hands united”. In this way, the Pope said, “from simple citizens, you will become Fathers of the Nation”.

In his prepared remarks, the Holy Father reflected on "the gaze of God", and "the gaze of the people". He began his address with the words used by the risen Lord to greet his “disconsolate disciples”, following the resurrection: “Peace be with you!”

“Peace is the first gift that the Lord brought us”, he said, “and the first commitment that leaders of nations must pursue.  Peace is the fundamental condition for ensuring the rights of each individual and the integral development of an entire people”.

Pope Francis greets a confraternity from Spain celebrating its 400th anniversary, and invites its members to make the Church a place of welcome for the poor and marginalized.
By Devin Watkins

“You call yourselves brothers, or confreres, and so you manifest the fundamental reality of our lives, that we are all children of God.”

Pope Francis made that remark on Friday to members of the Our Lady of the Ribbon Archconfraternity, during an audience in the Vatican.

Based in Spain’s Catalonia region, in the city of Tortosa, the confraternity (Nuestra Señora de la Cinta) travelled to Rome to celebrate 400 years since its foundation.

The Holy Father said their pilgrimage to the tomb of Peter confirms the bond of communion that binds them to his Successor.

The Emanuele Village is a structure dedicated to the care of people suffering from Alzheimer's disease. It is organized like a real Village, reproducing many small aspects of everyday life, assisting those who live with this disease to maintain a bridge of communication with the outside world, promoting socialization and inclusion. The Village is named after its founder, who set out to create an innovative solution for residential care for people affected by Alzheimer's disease.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Francis has sent a large donation to assist tens of thousands of Iranians who lost their homes and businesses in waves of severe flooding that began in mid-March.

The Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development said Pope Francis was sending 100,000 euros (US$113,000), which will be distributed with the help of the Vatican nunciature in Tehran.

"In the course of the past two weeks, violent flooding struck the northeast and southern regions of Iran, and there is fear flooding will continue in the coming days," the dicastery said in a statement April 12.

Rome, Italy, Apr 11, 2019 / 03:01 am (CNA).- The bare, white marble of Rome’s ‘Scala Sancta,’ which are believed to be the stairs trod by Christ on the day of his trial and death, are exposed and visible to pilgrims for the first time in almost 300 years.

The stairs, encased in wood since the 1700s, will be uncovered for veneration from April 11 to June 9, the feast of Pentecost. During this time, pilgrims may ascend the marble steps on their knees.

“We thought this opportunity was important,” Paolo Violini, the head of the restoration of the staircase, told EWTN. He said the idea to open the Holy Stairs to the public came when they removed the wood to restore it and discovered the beautiful white stairs beneath.

Pilgrims who visit the stairs must ascend them on their knees as a sign of piety and reverence but can choose how they wish to pray while doing so. Those who cannot climb on their knees may kneel on the first step and then walk up one of the other staircases to reach the top.

There is also a plenary indulgence, or the remittance of temporal punishment due to sins which have already been forgiven, attached to ascending the entire staircase.

The usual conditions for a plenary indulgence must be met: the individual must be in the state of grace and have complete detachment from sin. The person must also pray for the pope's intentions and sacramentally confess their sins and receive Communion up to about twenty days before or after the indulgenced act.

Pope: Organ donation manifestation of solidarity, no to commercialisation
13 April 2019, 12:16

Pope Francis on Saturday meets with members of the Italian Association of Organ Donors   (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis on Saturday met with members of the Italian Association of Organ Donors telling them that, “donation means looking… beyond one's individual needs and opening oneself generously to a wider good. He also warned against the commercialisation of any part of the body.

Addressing the Italian Association of Organ Donors in the Vatican on Saturday, Pope Francis extolled the merits of organ donation, saying it should be “encouraged as a manifestation of generous solidarity”.

Noting the developments in transplant medicine that have made it possible to donate after death, and in some cases even during life, the Pope said that, “organ donation responds to a social need because, despite the development of many medical treatments, the need for organs still remains great.”

Pope to students: 'don’t be slaves to your mobile phones'

Pope Francis receives students and teachers of Rome's Visconti High School  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis receives students and teachers of a Rome high school in the Vatican, encouraging them to cultivate passion and curiosity and warning them against dependency on their mobile phones.
By Linda Bordoni

“Phones are for connecting” Pope Francis told an enthusiastic Paul VI Hall full of students: “life is for communicating!”

The girls and boys, accompanied by family members and teachers of Rome’s Visconti High School clapped loudly when the Pope turned his attention to their ever-present digital devices.

"Free yourself from the addiction to mobile phones" he warned, pointing out that they are good and useful tools, but must be used in the right way.

Speaking off-the-cuff during his wide-ranging and to-the-point discourse, the Pope said “Mobile phones are for communication” and communication is beautiful and good. But, he continued, the danger of becoming addicted to mobile phones is very tangible at present.

Every one, he continued, should know how to use one, “but when you become a slave to your mobile phone, you will lose your freedom”.

New book on Pope Francis’ election reveals the main kingmakers

April 12, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) – Gerard O'Connell's new book The Election of Pope Francis, based on many sources, describes in detail the time from the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI up until shortly after the election of Pope Francis. This study also confirms the key role played by some “kingmakers,” especially Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, but also Walter Kasper and Oscar Maradiaga. Most importantly, O'Connell reveals for the first time that there was a private dinner on the eve before the conclave, at which the supporters of Bergoglio realized that he had a real chance of becoming the next Pope.

The Election of Pope Francis – which will be released on May 3 – is a detailed sort of diary, in which O'Connell describes the atmosphere of that 30-day period – 11 February-13 March 2013 – and how the cardinals, caught off guard by Benedict's unexpected resignation, tried to discern whom they could and should elect. The author adds information to this diary that he later learned from many different sources since that historic 13 March 2013, when the Argentine prelate Jorge Bergoglio was elected Pope. O'Connell, as the husband of the Argentine journalist Elisabetta Piqué and as a personal friend of the current Pope, has had an especially good access to sources. Bergoglio also baptized one of his children, and he met with the O'Connell family just ahead of the conclave. O'Connell is the Rome Correspondent for the Jesuit magazine America edited by Father James Martin, S.J.

Based on published and private sources, O'Connell describes how until the conclave, neither the cardinals themselves, nor the media and general public, saw one single candidate standing out, as had been the case in 2005 with Joseph Ratzinger. None of the more prominent candidates – Cardinals Angelo Scola, Odilo Scherer, and Marc Ouellet – seemed to have sufficient support.
