Pope's June prayer intention: "The Priests' Way of Life"
06 June 2019, 16:00

Pope Francis releases a video message accompanying his prayer intention for June, which is that priests may commit themselves to "solidarity with those who are most poor."

In his prayer intention for the month of June 2019, Pope Francis calls us to pray that priests, "through the modesty and humility of their lives, commit themselves actively, above all, to solidarity with those who are most poor."

It has become the custom of Pope Francis to release a video message detailing his prayer intention for each month.

The full text of his intention is below:

I would like to ask you to look at the priests who work in our communities.

They are not perfect, but many give it their all until the very end, offering themselves with humility and joy.

They are priests who are close to the people, ready to work hard for everyone.

Let us be thankful for their example and testimony.

Let us pray that priests, through the modesty and humility of their lives, commit themselves actively, above all, to solidarity with those who are most poor.

As world leaders and veterans commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Allied D-Day landings in Europe, Pope Francis expresses his appreciation for the courage of soldiers who committed themselves to fighting for freedom and peace.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis sent his gratitude to the soldiers who fought in World War II, in a message read out at Mass by Bishop Jean-Claude Boulanger, of Bayeux-Lisieux, in France.

The Holy Father said the Allied landings on June 6, 1944 in Normandy and elsewhere in Europe were “decisive in the fight against Nazi barbarism”.

He said the campaign “opened the path to end World War II, which has so deeply wounded Europe and the world.”

CHARIS: a new service for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal
06 June 2019, 10:53

CHARIS, a new unified service for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, will be inaugurated at Pentecost. Father Alexandre Awi Mello, secretary of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, and Jean-Luc Moens, the first moderator of CHARIS, were asked by Vatican News to tell us about this new service, which was commissioned by Pope Francis.

Vatican News (VN): On 8 December 2018, the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life instituted a new unified service for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. This service is called CHARIS, an acronym for Catholic Charismatic Renewal International Service. What are its objectives?

Fr. Awi: CHARIS is called to serve all who express this “stream of grace”. Its statutes will enter into force on 9 June 2019 on the Solemnity of Pentecost. That same day, the Catholic Fraternity of Charismatic Covenant Communities and Fellowships (known as Catholic Fraternity) and ICCRS (International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services) will terminate their activities. It is important to note that CHARIS is not a merger between these two organisations, but rather a new service that initiates a new phase for the International Catholic Charismatic Renewal. I believe that after Pentecost this innovation will gradually become more evident. It should also be noted that CHARIS is not a governing body but a Service of Communion in accordance with the explicit desire of the Holy Father.

Pope names delegate to Lourdes for care of pilgrims
06 June 2019, 12:33

The Marian Shrine of Lourdes
Pope Francis has named Bishop Antoine Hérouard, auxiliary of Lille, France, as his special delegate charged with the pastoral care of pilgrims visiting Lourdes. Archbishop Rino Fisichella, the President of the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization, announced the appointment at the French Marian shrine on Thursday.
By Andrea Tornielli

The decision is line with the one already taken in 2017 for Medjugorje. Pope Francis has shown his particular concern for the care of pilgrims, and desires that centres of Marian devotion should become “ever more a place of prayer and of Christian witness corresponding to the needs of the People of God.” This is seen in the letter that the Pope has sent to Bishop Antoine Hérouard, auxiliary Bishop of Lille, France, in which he communicates to him the decision to nominate him as delegate ad nutum Sanctae Sedis (that is, “at the disposition of the Holy See) for the sanctuary of Lourdes.

Hmmm...

'Lead us not into temptation' falls out of Lord's Prayer
by Christopher Lamb

Pope Francis has approved a revised translation of The Lord’s prayer which will no longer say “lead us not into temptation” but instead reads “do not let us fall/be abandoned to temptation”.

It is part of a revised translation of the Roman Missal for Italy. The change to the The Lord's Prayer is a change that Francis has called for in the past.

Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti, the President of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, told Avvenire, the bishops' conference newspaper, that the Pope had signed off the liturgical changes, which also include a revision of the Gloria. The line “peace on earth to people of good will” is to be “peace on earth to people beloved by God.

During an Italian television interview in December 2017, the Pope said the line “lead us not into temptation” in the Our Father was “not a good translation”. He suggested “do not let us fall into temptation” as an alternative.

Update--Cardinal Pell

Prosecution falters during Cardinal Pell appeal hearing

Melbourne, Australia, Jun 6, 2019 / 08:10 am (CNA).- The lead prosecutor arguing to sustain the conviction of Cardinal George Pell struggled Thursday in presenting the Crown’s case. Christopher Boyce struggled to answer questions from the three-judge appeal court, accidentally naming the alleged victim on a live stream of proceedings.

Following the conviction of Pell on five counts of sexual abuse of minors last December, judges at the Supreme Court of Victoria have been hearing an appeal against the jury’s unanimous decision. After extensive arguments from the defense on June 5, the prosecution put its case in favor of the decision Thursday.

The prosecution’s case against the appeal centers on upholding the sole witness and alleged victim in the case whom, Boyce insisted, was not a “liar” or a “fantasist,” while conceding that the witness had changed the dates and years of the alleged attacks over the course of the case and no longer agreed with the prosecution’s own assertions.

The hearing ended at 4pm local time, with the judges reserving their judgement. There is no established time frame for their decision.

Pope Francis condemns ‘shameful ill-treatment’ of women
07 June 2019, 17:19

Marking the Day for Life in England and Wales, dedicated this year to domestic abuse, Pope Francis issues an appeal to fight all forms of exploitation.
By Linda Bordoni

As the Catholic Church in England and Wales prepares to celebrate the Day for Life focusing on the theme of the Scourge of Domestic Abuse, Pope Francis has sent a message of greetings, support and participation.

In the message, signed on his behalf by the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Pope said that as the bishops consider the theme of Domestic Abuse, “and in particular the shameful ill-treatment to which women are sometimes subjected (cf Amoris Laetitia, 54).”  He prays that the efforts of the bishops’ to “support the most vulnerable of our brothers and sisters will bear much fruit and contribute to a growing commitment to fight against all forms of exploitation.”

“The responsibility to share the good news that every human life is beautiful and sacred is a noble calling”, said Pope Francis. He continued offering “his encouragement to all who strive to promote a culture of life, gladly imparting his Apostolic Blessing as a pledge of strength and peace in the Lord.”

The 2019 Day for Life is being held in England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland on 16 June.

Holy See confirms changes to Italian liturgical translation of Our Father, Gloria
By Hannah Brockhaus

Vatican City, Jun 7, 2019 / 02:36 pm (CNA).- The Apostolic See has confirmed the translation of the third edition of the Roman Missal prepared by the Italian bishops' conference. The translation has garnered attention for its changes to the Our Father, as well as the Gloria.

The newly-approved Messale Romano will translate the penultimate line of the Our Father (ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem) (lead us not into temptation) as “non abbandonarci alla tentazione” (do not abandon us to temptation). The existing version had translated it as “non ci indurre in tentazione” (lead us not into temptation).

In the Gloria, the line “in térra pax homínibus bónae voluntátis” (on earth peace to people of good will) will be translated “pace in terra agli uomini, amati dal Signore” (peace on earth to men, loved by the Lord). It was translated “pace in terra agli uomini di buona volontà” (peace on earth to men of good will).

The Italian bishops' conference had approved the new edition of the Messale Romano during their November 2018 general assembly. The Apostolic See's confirmation of the text was communicated during the conference's meeting last month.

News reports in English may have given the impression that Pope Francis had changed the Our Father for the whole of the Church, rather than his see having confirmed a change made by the bishops of Italy.

The new Italian text is a translation of the third edition of the Missale Romanum, the Latin typical edition which was issued in 2002. The existing Messale Romano was a translation of the second edition of the Missale Romanum, which had been promulgated in 1975.

The English translation of the third edition of the Missale Romanum was issued in 2011.

A spokesman for the English and Welsh bishops has said that the International Commission on English in the Liturgy “is not currently considering the Lord's Prayer,” and that “there are no plans at present for [the Our Father] to change in English,” but that “I am sure there will be some consultation with the English-speaking nations.”

Pope on the eve of Pentecost: ‘allow the Spirit to help us hear the cry of the city’

Pope Francis celebrates Holy Mass on the eve of Pentecost  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis celebrates Holy Mass with the faithful of the Diocese of Rome on the eve of the feast of Pentecost. The ceremony is followed by a pilgrimage to the Shrine of the Madonna of Divine Love.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis encouraged the faithful of the city of Rome to allow the Spirit to take them by the hand and bring them to the heart of the city to hear the cry of those in need of salvation.

He was celebrating Holy Mass with the faithful of the Diocese of Rome in St. Peter’s Square on Saturday evening, the eve of the feast of Pentecost.

Noting that the celebration marks the evening of the last day of the Easter Season, the Pope said, on the feast of Pentecost, “Jesus is in our midst and proclaims out loud: Let anyone who thirsts come to me and drink”.

The Pope said that the Holy Spirit springs from the heart of the Risen Jesus, and fills our hearts with mercy.

“How I wish that the people who live in Rome would recognize the Church, recognize us”, for the humanity, the mercy, the tenderness of which there is so much need, he said.

Reflecting on the liturgy of the day, the Pope explained that thanks to the Holy Spirit, the disciples’ worries disappeared.

Rejuvenated by the Spirit, he said, their lives were changed, and he pointed out that “far from being an abstract reality: he is the Person who is most concrete and close, the one who changes our lives”.

World Mission Sunday in 2019 falls on 20 October. Instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1926, the annual day encourages prayers, cooperation and help for missions as well as reminding Christians about the fundamental missionary character of the Church and of every baptized person.

The theme of this year’s observance is “Baptized and Sent: The Church of Christ on Mission in the World.”

Update--Archbishop Fulton Sheen

https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/fulton-sheen-remains-will-to-peoria-ny-archdiocese-says-40387
Fulton Sheen remains will move to Peoria, NY archdiocese says

Archbishop Fulton Sheen
Peoria, Ill., Jun 8, 2019 / 03:14 pm (CNA).- The Archdiocese of New York will work to help transfer the remains of Archbishop Fulton Sheen, a spokesman for the archdiocese told CNA Saturday. The decision is the conclusion of a long legal battle over the late archbishop's burial place.

“We have been informed that the New York Court of Appeals has denied further appeal of the New York Supreme Court decision upholding Joan Cunningham’s petition to disinter Archbishop Fulton Sheen’s mortal remains from under the altar at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, where they have rested for nearly 40 years,” Joseph Zwilling, spokesperson for the Archdiocese of New York, told CNA.

The denial of the archdiocese’s appeal to keep Sheen’s remains in New York was delivered by the New York Court of Appeals on Friday, June 7.

“While we did not initiate this matter, the Trustees of St. Patrick’s and the Archdiocese believed that it was not simply their duty, but a solemn obligation, to seek to uphold Archbishop Sheen’s last wishes, as directed in his Will, to be buried in New York – a position held until recently by Joan Cunningham herself,” Zwilling said.

Cunningham is Sheen’s niece and closest living relative. Cunningham has said in the past that although her uncle’s will states that his wish was to be buried in New York, she believes he would have wanted to have been interred in Peoria if he knew it would help advance his cause for sainthood.

The Peoria diocese opened the cause for Sheen’s canonization (the process to become an officially recognized saint in the Catholic Church) in 2002, after Archdiocese of New York said it would not explore the case. In 2012, Benedict XVI recognized the heroic virtues of the archbishop.

Receiving members of the 92nd Plenary Session of ROACO, the Reunion of Aid Agencies that provides aid to the Oriental Catholic Churches, Pope Francis reveals it is his wish to travel to Iraq in the coming year.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis said on Monday he "thinks constantly of Iraq", where he wishes to travel in the coming year.

He was addressing representatives of ROACO, the ‘Reunion of Aid Agencies for the Oriental Churches.’

As he listed countries that fall within the Reunion’s reach and where the faithful continue to suffer, - including Syria, Ukraine and the Holy Land – the Pope focused on Iraq.

He said he hopes it is able to build a peaceful future based on the “shared pursuit of the common good on the part of all elements of society, including the religious”, without falling back into “hostilities sparked by the simmering conflicts of the regional powers”.

Pope Francis to Lead Corpus Christi Procession in Casal Bertone
Instead of Celebrating Mass at Basilica of St. John Lateran & Having Traditional Procession in Rome’s Center
June 10, 2019 14:39•Deborah Castellano Lubov

Pope Francis will celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, with a Eucharistic Procession, in the zone of Casal Bertone in Rome. Last year, Francis led the procession in Ostia.

This news was communicated in a brief statement from Director of the Holy See Press Office, Alessandro Gisotti, today, June 10, 2019.

“On Sunday June 23, on the Solemnity of the Holy Body and Blood of Christ, at 6 p.m.,” it read, “Pope Francis will celebrate Mass on the churchyard of the Church of Santa Maria Consolatrice, in the Casal Bertone district of Rome.”

“At the end of the Eucharistic Celebration,” it concluded, “the procession with the Blessed Sacrament will take place in the streets of the neighborhood, ending with the Eucharistic blessing imparted by the Holy Father.”

After some 100 years without the Eucharistic Procession in Rome, Pope John Paul II had restored the Roman tradition in 1982. Last year, 2018, marked the first year since then without it.
