Pope at Mass in Camerino: “Remember, repair, rebuild…together”

Pope Francis celebrates Mass in Camerino, Italy  (AFP or licensors)
Pope Francis celebrates Holy Mass in Camerino in the Italian Marches Region, reflecting on Psalm Number 8, and on the words “remembering”, “hope”, and “closeness”.
By Vatican News

The earthquakes that struck Camerino and nearby Italian hill-towns, on August 24th and again on October 30th three years ago, left nearly 300 people dead and buildings in ruins. At a magnitude of 6.6 on the Richter Scale, they were the most destructive earthquakes to hit Italy in over 30 years, after those that devastated L’Aquila in 2009. The towns and the people have been struggling to recover ever since.

Psalm 8:5

Pope Francis began his homily by repeating the words of Psalm 8: "What is man that you are mindful of him?” The Pope said these words came to mind when he thought of the people of this area: “Faced with what you have seen and suffered”, he said, “with houses collapsed and buildings reduced to rubble, the question arises: what is man ever? What is he, if his hopes can end up in dust?”

By Vatican News

Before reciting the Angelus after Mass, Pope Francis voiced his concern over “increasing tensions in the Persian Gulf.”  “I call on everyone”, he said, “to use the instruments of diplomacy to resolve the complex problems of the conflicts in the Middle East. I also renew to the international community my heartfelt appeal for every possible effort to be made to promote dialogue and peace.”

Pope in Camerino: Meeting with First Communion children
16 June 2019, 15:32

Pope with First Communion children  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis makes time to drop in on 200 First Holy Communion children during his Pastoral Visit to the Italian Marches region.

Before leaving the Marches region on Sunday, Pope Francis greeted around 200 children who had made their First Holy Communion. The children from the Archdiocese of Camerino-San Severino Marche met the Pope in the gymnasium of the Sports Centre at the University of Camerino along with their parents and catechists.

According to the ad-interim Director of the Holy See Press Office, Alessandro Gisotti,  the Pope wanted to add this meeting to the initial program, after Archbishop Francesco Massara had shown the Pope letters written by the children of the earthquake zones on a recent visit to the Vatican.

Pope Francis' trip today to Camerino

Camerino: Pope’s Support for Survivors of 2016 Earthquake
Visit to the emergency housing, to the cathedral and mass with the population

“It takes more strength to repair than to build, to begin again than to begin, to reconcile only to get along. This is the strength that God gives us,” said Pope Francis, visiting the areas of the Italian diocese of Camerino affected by the earthquake of August 2016, three years after the disaster, June 16, 2019.

Arrived by helicopter at the sports center of the University of Camerino, the pope went to the emergency housing structures where he met the families who live there, in the town of Cortina. He entered several homes, exchanging residents – including a 92-year-old woman and her grandson engaged in reconstruction – urging “not to lose hope”, to “pray always”.

Outside, he also greeted the residents, shook hands, joked with them, blessing children, indulging in selfies. “I would have liked to visit all the houses,” he told them. “I am close to each of you … I pray for you to resolve this situation as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience and your courage. “

Wearing a helmet, the pope then went to the still condemned cathedral. In the middle of the rubble, he offered a wreath of flowers and took refuge at the foot of a statue of the Virgin Mary disfigured by the earthquake. Then, after having briefly met the mayors of the communes of the diocese, he celebrated the Sunday Mass at Cavour Square

Pope: Franciscan life marked by fraternity, littleness, peace
17 June 2019, 15:04

Pope Francis greets the new OFM Conv. Minister General, Carlos Trovarelli
Pope Francis invites Conventual Franciscans to live in a spirit of fraternity, littleness, and peace, after the Order adopts new rules to govern community life.
By Devin Watkins

The Order of Friars Minor Conventual (OFM Conv) concluded their month-long 202nd General Chapter on Monday with a papal audience in the Vatican.

In his address, Pope Francis complemented the Conventual Franciscans for approving their new General Statutes, which make changes regarding inter-culturalism, sharing, and financial transparency in community life.

“These changes are difficult, but it is effort well-spent!” he told the group, reminding them that Constitutions guarantee an Order’s charism and its extension into the future.

The Gospel, Pope Francis noted, is the Franciscan’s “rule and life” and their mission is to be a living Gospel.

Synod for the Amazon: ‘Instrumentum Laboris’ released
17 June 2019, 15:15

The ‘Instrumentum Laboris’ (the Working Document) of the upcoming Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for the Pan-Amazonian Region is released in the Vatican. The Synod takes place from 6 to 27 October 2019 on the theme “Amazonia: new paths for the Church and for an integral ecology ".
By Christiane Murray and Linda Bordoni

At the heart of the Synod’s Instrumentum Laboris is the cry of the Amazon that asks the Church to be its ally in reaching out to everyone, especially to the poor, as they seek true fulfillment and human dignity in their lives.

The Working Document was presented to the press on Monday, June 17, by the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops. It is the result of a listening process that began with Pope Francis' visit to Puerto Maldonado in Peru, in January 2018, and continued with consultations throughout the Amazon Region and a Second Meeting of the Pre-Synodal Council last May.

Listen to God, that with him we may hear the cry of the people;until breathing in the desire to which God calls us

Amazonia, at the heart of South America, encompasses a region of 7.8 million square kilometers. It  includes territory that belongs to nine different nations: Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guyana.  Its 5.3 million square kilometer rainforest is the largest in the world and is an irreplaceable source of fresh water, oxygen and biodiversity for the planet.

“The Voice of the Amazon” is the title of the first part of the document and it presents the reality of the territory and of its peoples. It focusses on the relationship between life and water highlighting how the great rivers flowing through the region are crucial not only for the flora and the fauna of the territory and of the earth, but for the livelihood, culture and spirituality of thousands of indigenous communities, other minorities, and farmers who live in the Amazon region.

Vatican quashes rumors of Benedict XVI stroke

Vatican City, Jun 18, 2019 / 11:01 am (CNA).- Pope Benedict XVI is not dead and did not recently suffer a stroke, the Vatican confirmed on Tuesday.

On Monday, rumors circulated on Twitter and other social media platforms that the Pope Emeritus had suffered a “mild ischemia” - a kind of stroke.

“The rumours are false,” Alessandro Gisotti, director ad interim of the Press Office of the Holy See, confirmed to the Catholic Herald on Tuesday.

Archbishop Georg Gänswein, Benedict’s personal secretary, called the rumors “fake news,” Edward Pentin reported on Twitter.

Amazonian Synod's Working Document Charts Course Through ‘Three Conversions’

The new 64-page instrumentum laboris, which will form the basis of discussion at the Oct. 6-27 synod, focuses on themes such as inculturation, ‘ecological conversion’ and synodality.
Edward Pentin

VATICAN CITY — The upcoming synod on the Amazonian region will be a time of “pastoral reflection, open to recognizing diversity" and “listening to the Amazonian reality with all its cultural and ecclesial facets,” Cardinal Lorenzo Baldisseri, the general secretary of the Synod of Bishops told reporters at the launch of the meeting’s working document Monday.

Entitled “Amazonia, New Paths for the Church and for an Integral Ecology,” the Oct. 6-27 synod, the cardinal said, will comprise all the bishops from the vast region that encompasses Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, French Guyana, Guyana and Surinam, along with experts, heads of relevant cur\ial departments and several papal appointees.

Bishop Franz-Josef Overbeck of Essen, Germany, head of the German bishops' Latin America commission which provides financial and pastoral support to Latin America, said in May that the synod will lead the Church to a “point of no return” and thereafter “nothing will be the same as it was.”

The synod is expected to have wide significance for the Church, extending beyond the Amazon region: Pope Francis’ has called for “a Church with an Amazonian face,” while Cardinal Baldisseri said last year its proceedings will have consequences for the universal Church.

Pope at Audience: the fire of God’s love, the power of His word

Pope greets pilgrims in sunny St. Peter's Square  (Vatican Media )
Pope Francis reflects on the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles gathered with Mary in the Upper Room, and says the same Spirit continues to dwell in us.
By Vatican News

At this week’s General Audience held in a sun-drenched St Peter’s Square, Pope Francis continued his catechesis on the Acts of the Apostles, focussing specifically on the day of Pentecost.

Prayer and breath

The Pope described the Apostles, gathered around Mary in the Upper Room, as being “in prayer”. Prayer is the “lung”, said the Pope, “that gives breath to disciples of all times; without prayer one cannot be a disciple of Jesus”. The descent of the Holy Spirit, he said, was “an event that exceeded their expectations”: they were “surprised” by the “force of a wind that reminds us of the…primordial breath”.

Pope in Naples: migration and theology in the Mediterranean
19 June 2019, 13:01

"Veritatis Gaudium" conference in Naples
Pope Francis travels to Naples on Friday to take part in a conference that will discuss the impact of the Apostolic Constitution, Veritatis Gaudium, on theological studies.
By Linda Bordoni

During his one-day visit to the southern Italian city of Naples on 21 June, Pope Francis will deliver a speech entitled “Theology after Veritatis Gaudium in the context of the Mediterranean.”

The event takes place within an initiative that brings experts to the table to discuss theology in connection with the current context in the Mediterranean area which is impacted by migration, inter-culturality and in need of interreligious and ecumenical dialogue.

The event is hosted by the Jesuits who run the ‘Pontifical Theological Faculty of Southern Italy’ in Naples. Pope Francis will be welcomed by the city’s Archbishop, Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, and by the dean of the Faculty. During his visit, he will lunch with Jesuits from across the Euro-Mediterranean region.

Pope Francis’ apostolic constitution Veritatis Gaudium was published in January 2018, and stipulated new norms of governance and education for all institutions that issue ecclesiastical degrees.

In it, the Pope urges theologians and philosophers to always be open to the maius [greatness] of God and of the truth, which is always in development. The constitution also calls for institutions to develop procedures for the education of refugees and migrants.

Jesuit father Pino Di Luccio, is the Dean of the Faculty. He told Vatican Radio that the programme for the event foresees a series of interventions that will shine the light on the new context in Mediterranean countries impacted by immigration and inter-culturality. He said speakers will focus on the crucial contribution of  dialogue between religions.

Update: Historic cross on public property can stay, Supreme Court rules

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- In a 7-2 vote, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of preserving a historic cross-shaped memorial in Bladensburg, Maryland saying the cross did not endorse religion.

The June 20 ruling reversed a lower court decision last year.

"Although the cross has long been a preeminent Christian symbol, its use in the Bladensburg memorial has a special significance," said the court's ruling in an opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito. He said the memorial, paying tribute to soldiers who died in World War I, should be seen in the same "historical context" as the white crosses marking the overseas graves of soldiers who had lost their lives in that war.

He also said removing the memorial "would be seen by many not as a neutral act but as the manifestation of a hostility toward religion that has no place in our Establishment Clause traditions."

In Naples, Pope Francis warns theologians against ‘collapsing’ into ideology

ROME - Pope Francis on Friday visited the southern Italian city of Naples and participated in a theology congress dedicated to interreligious dialogue and migration in the context of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Argentine pontiff revisited some of his core concepts, calling for theologians to be an expression of a church that is a “field hospital,” and to be merciful, because without this, “our theology, our law, our pastoral care, run the risk of collapsing into bureaucratic pettiness or ideology, which by its nature wants to tame the mystery.”

The theology summit was organized by the Pontifical Catholic University, a Jesuit institution. The scope of the gathering was to discuss the impact of the pope’s Apostolic Constitution Veritatis Gaudium, on theological studies. His speech was entitled “Theology after Veritatis Gaudium in the context of the Mediterranean.”

Pope to Scholas Occurentes: don’t be afraid to dialogue
21 June 2019, 16:27

Bullying is born when the other is attacked and identity is diminished, said Pope Francis in a video message to Scholas Occurrents which organized an online conference on ‘bullying’.

In a video message to the youth Pope Francis on 21 June said, “Declare war on bullying, because bullying diminishes dignity; and gamble on dialogue, gamble on journeying together, gamble on the patience of listening to others. Then there will be true peace, and the same true peace will cause you to discover your own dignity”.

Pope Francis greets young people taking part in the XI International Youth Forum  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis meets with young people taking part in the Eleventh International Youth Forum, which follows the synodal process begun last year; and the publication of the post-synodal apostolic exhortation “Christus vivit”. The Forum was convened by the Dicastery for Laity, Family, and Life.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis held a special audience in the Vatican on Saturday for around 250 youths from more than 100 countries around the world. The young people were in Rome participating in the XI International Youth Forum, which focused on the theme of “Youth in action in a synodal Church”.

In his address to the young people, Pope Francis reminded them that they are the “prime protagonists of the pastoral conversion so greatly desired by the Synod Fathers”.

The experience of the disciples at Emmaus

The Holy Father took the opportunity to reflect on the experience of the disciples at Emmaus, which the October Synod on young people described as “paradigmatic for understanding Church’s mission to the young”. He said it was providential that the Solemnity of Corpus Christi occurred during the Forum. “Could it be that the Lord wanted once more to open your hearts so that he could speak to you through this page of the Gospel?” the Pope asked.

Pope to Catholic physicians: Healing involves drawing near to sick
22 June 2019, 13:53

Pope Francis blesses a Catholic physician's stethoscope  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis invites Catholic medical professionals to draw near to patients by carefully listening to their concerns and comforting them in their illness, as Jesus did in His own ministry.
By Devin Watkins

“By His compassionate closeness, Jesus showed the infinite love of God our Father for His children most in need.”

That was the model Pope Francis held out to members of the International Federation of Catholic Medical Associates (FIAMC), in his address to delegates on Saturday morning.

Jesus, said the Pope, showed compassionate concern for the sick, leading the early Christian community to call Him a “physician”.

He drew near to the sick and disabled, who were often marginalized by their contemporaries as sinners.

“Care for the sick emerges, then, as an essential aspect of Christ’s mission and, consequently, of the Church’s mission as well,” said Pope Francis.

US bishops follow Pope in calling death penalty ‘inadmissible,’ admit they don’t know what it means

BALTIMORE, Maryland, June 21, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) – The U.S. Bishops, following Pope Francis’ lead, voted last week to change what the U.S. Church teaches about the death penalty. They made the move despite an admission from the prelate presenting the revision to the bishops that he doesn't know what the pope actually means by calling the death penalty "inadmissible." That bishop defended the Pope's language as "eloquent ambiguity."

Adhering to Pope Francis’ declaration last August that the death penalty is “inadmissible,” the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops approved a revision to its U.S. Catechism for Adults last Thursday at its spring General Assembly in Baltimore, creating a quandary for Catholics in regard to adherence to Church teaching.

The bishops voted 194 to 8 to revise their position on the issue, with three bishops abstaining. In contrast to almost all matters to come before the bishops, the item passed without need for discussion. The revision needed a two-thirds vote from the Conference and must also receive the Vatican’s approval, or “recognitio.”

Rome's Santa Maria Consolatrice Parish, where Pope Francis celebrates Corpus Christi
Pope Francis is set to celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi in Rome’s Casal Bertone neighborhood on Sunday evening with Mass and a Eucharistic procession.
By Vatican News

The Holy Father presides at the Eucharistic celebration in the churchyard of the parish of Santa Maria Consolatrice at 6:00 pm.

Following Mass, there is to be a procession with the Blessed Sacrament through the streets of Rome’s Casal Bertone neighborhood, which will be led by Cardinal Vicar Angelo De Donatis and will end at the football field adjacent Casa Serena, a reception facility for the homeless of the Missionaries of Charity. The length of the procession is 1.2 km or about ¾ of a mile.

75th anniversary

Another priest, Father Lani, said “the parishioners are looking forward to” the Pope’s visit. The celebration of this Mass, he said, will inaugurate the festivities surrounding the 75th anniversary of the parish.

Pope Francis is the fourth Pope who has visited the parish, following his predecessors Paul VI, John Paul II, and Benedict XVI. From 1977 to 1993, Pope Benedict, as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, was the Titular Cardinal of this parish.

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, often referred to as the feast of Corpus Christi, is traditionally celebrated on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday, including in the Vatican, but in many places the feast is moved to the following Sunday.

Pope Francis took the opportunity to reflect on the day’s Gospel (Lk 9:11-17) of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes to feed a large crowd.

“A blessing releases a cascade of goodness.”

With those words, Pope Francis invited Catholics living in the Roman neighborhood to multiply what they have by helping their brothers and sisters in need.

In his homily at Mass on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, the Pope reflected on the verbs “to speak” and “to give”.

Archdiocese of Lyon: Pope appoints Bishop Dubost as Apostolic Administrator
24 June 2019, 15:45

Bishop Michel Dubost.
Cardinal Philippe Barbarin, who has decided to take time off pending the result of his appeal in an alleged cover-up case of sexual abuse of minors, is now called on to collaborate with the mandate of the Apostolic Administrator of Lyon.

Pope Francis on Monday appointed Bishop Emeritus Michel Dubost of Evry-Crobeil-Essonnes as apostolic administrator sede plena et ad nutum Sanctæ Sedis of the Archdiocese of Lyon, France.

The appointment comes as Cardinal Philippe Barbarin, the Archbishop of Lyon, has taken time off from his pastoral duties as he awaits the final court judgement for failing to report to authorities allegations of sexual abuse of minors by a priest of this archdiocese between July 2014 and June 2015.
