Pope: Jesus seeks witnesses to His life

Pope Francis celebrates Mass on the feast of Saints Peter and Paul  (Vatican Media)
Pope Francis presides over Holy Mass on Saturday in St Peter’s Basilica for the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul..
By Lydia O'Kane

As Bishop of Rome, Pope Francis on Saturday celebrated the feast of the Patrons of this ancient city, Saints Peter and Paul.

Dressed in red vestments and against the backdrop of a magnificent St Peter’s Basilica, the Pope noted that these Apostles “stand before us as witnesses.”

During his homily, the Pontiff said, “if we go to the heart of that testimony, we can see them as witnesses to life, witnesses to forgiveness and witnesses to Jesus.”

Pope Francis underlined that the lives of these Saints  “were not neat and linear.”

Pope at Angelus: Recognize the qualities of others without envy
29 June 2019, 12:46

Pope Francis during Angelus on the feast of Saints Peter and Paul  (AFP or licensors)
Pope Francis invites the faithful, on this feast of Sts Peter and Paul, “to appreciate the qualities of others, to recognize their gifts without maliciousness and envy.”

During the Angelus, following Mass in St Peter’s Basilica, Pope Francis once again reflected on Saints Peter and Paul, on this, their feast day.

He noted that they are “sometimes depicted in icons in the act of holding up the Church.” This is a reminder to us, he said, “of the words of today’s Gospel in which Jesus says to Peter: “You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church”.

Inviting the faithful to think about the My, in my Church, he explained that, “Jesus is not speaking about the Church as if it is an external reality, but is expressing the great love that he has for her: My Church.”

Pope urges German Church to walk together, moved by the Spirit
29 June 2019, 11:51

In a Letter published June 29, Pope Francis offers his support to the synodal journey of the Church in Germany in which he expresses his appreciation for the German Church, exhorting it not to walk alone and emphasizing the centrality of the Holy Spirit in ecclesial renewal.
Fr. Bernd Hagenkord SJ - Vatican City

“We are all aware that we are living not only in an age of change but also of epochal change that raises new and old questions which call for a justified and necessary debate,” Pope Francis writes in his Letter published on Saturday.  He says he is aware of the dramatic situation of the Church in the country and offers his support to the reflection on the issue.

Journeying together

The Letter is the Pope’s contribution to the synodal journey which the bishops decided upon during their Plenary Assembly in March this year. Together with the representatives of the Central Committee of German Lay Catholics (ZdK) and external experts, the Church wants to discuss the central themes of the crisis.

The starting point for this synodal journey was a study commissioned by the bishops themselves on the theme of sexual abuse by the clergy and consecrated persons, but there are also other issues, such as the aging of communities, the lack of vocations, the non-acceptance of Catholic teaching on sexuality and the lifestyle of priests.

Pope Francis: Itinerancy, promptness, decisiveness keys to Gospel proclamation
30 June 2019, 14:16

Following Jesus means no looking back. At the Angelus on Sunday, Pope Francis says that being a disciple of the Master means being prompt, decisive, and always on the move.
By Christopher Wells

In his reflection at the Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis pointed out three figures Christ meets in the Gospel, which “highlight what is required of those who desire to follow Jesus.”

The first figure is generous, and promises to follow Jesus wherever He goes. Jesus responds that the Son of Man “has nowhere to rest His head,” but is always on the move. The Church, similarly, is called to always be in motion. “Our mission cannot be static, but is itinerant,” the Pope said. The Church, he explained, is called to go along all the paths of the world in order to arrive “at the human and existential peripheries.”

Pope sees Kim-Trump meeting as example of "culture of encounter"

Pope Francis sends greetings to protagonists of an historic meeting on the Korean Peninsula
By Christopher Wells

“In these last few hours, we have seen in Korea a good example of the ‘culture of encounter’,” Pope Francis said after the recitation of the Angelus on Sunday.

The Holy Father was referring to the meeting that took place between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and U.S. President Donald Trump earlier in the day. The encounter took place in the “DMZ”, the “demilitarized zone” between North and South Korea. After shaking hands, President Trump crossed briefly into North Korea, becoming the first sitting U.S. President to do so. The two leaders then had an hour-long conversation in a building known as “Freedom House,” on the South Korean side of the border. The President of South Korea, Moon Jae-in, also was present for a short period of time.

A prayer for peace

Pope Francis sent his greetings to the “protagonists” of the meeting, with the prayer “that such a significant gesture might constitute a further step along the path of peace, not only on that [Korean] peninsula, but for the whole world.”

Vatican: Seal of Confession always inviolable, despite civil law
01 July 2019, 15:53

In a note published on Monday, the Vatican reaffirms the inviolability of the Seal of Confession, saying any political or legislative attempts to force priests to reveal what is said in the confessional is a violation of religious freedom.
By Devin Watkins

The Apostolic Penitentiary released the “Note on the importance of the internal forum and the inviolability of the Sacramental Seal” on Monday.

Approved for publication by Pope Francis on 21 June, the Note (written in Italian) upholds the absolute inviolability of the Seal of Confession, meaning that priests can never be forced to reveal what they learn in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

“The inviolable secrecy of Confession derives directly from revealed divine law and is rooted in the very nature of the sacrament, to the point of admitting no exception in the ecclesial or, even less so, in the civil sphere. In the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, in fact, the very essence of Christianity itself and of the Church is encapsulated: the Son of God became man to save us, and He decided to involve the Church, as a “necessary instrument” in this work of salvation, and, in her, those whom He has chosen, called, and constituted as His ministers,” the Note reads.

Pope to canonize Newman and four others on 13 October
01 July 2019, 12:02

Beatification cerimony of John Henry Newman presided over by Pope Benedict XVI on 19 September 2010
The Vatican announces the date of the canonization of Blessed John Henry Newman along with four others on the third Sunday of October 2019.
By Linda Bordoni

At a Consistory of cardinals on Monday, Pope Francis formally approved Blessed John Henry Newman’s canonisation along with that of Sister Mariam Thresia, of Giuseppina Vannini, of Dulce Lopes Pontes and of Margarita Bays.

In February, the Pope signed a decree recognising a second miracle attributed to Blessed John Henry Newman, the inexplicable healing of a woman with a “life-threatening pregnancy”.  Blessed John Henry Newman was one of the most prominent converts to Catholicism from Anglicanism of the 19th century. He was already an esteemed Anglican theologian when he founded the Oxford Movement to return the Church of England to its Catholic roots, before himself converting to the Catholic faith. He was renowned as a brilliant thinker and was made a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII. He died in Birmingham in 1890, aged 89, after founding the Birmingham Oratory.

Moscow Archbishop: Pope-Putin meeting a quest for dialogue, peace
01 July 2019, 14:31

Pope Francis and Vladimir Putin meeting in the Vatican on in June 2015.
Russian President, Vladimir Putin is scheduled to meet Pope Francis in the Vatican on July 4. According to the Catholic Archbishop of Moscow, Paolo Pezzi, issues such as dialogue, peace and the environment are likely to dominate the talks but he is not optimistic about a possible papal visit to Russia.
By Robin Gomes

Archbishop Paolo Pezzi of the Archdiocese of the Mother of God in Moscow, Russia, is enthusiastic about the next meeting between Pope Francis and Russian President Vladimir Putin, scheduled for Thursday in the Vatican.

Dialogue, peace, common home

“Even though we are not aware of the programme of the meeting, I can imagine that themes dear to the Holy Father, such as peace and safeguarding our common home, are likely to be on the agenda of discussion,” the Italian-born archbishop told FM radio Radio Vaticana Italia.

The July 4 meeting will be the third between Pope Francis and Putin in the Vatican.  They first met on November 25, 2013, and in less than two years they met again on June 10, 2015.

The Holy See and the Russian Federation re-established bilateral relations in 1990 and re-established full diplomatic relations in 2009.

While underscoring Russia's importance in the quest for world peace, Arch. Pezzi noted the pope’s deep commitment to peace among peoples.  What the Church expects from this third meeting between Pope Francis and Russian President Vladimir Putin, he said, is to be able to continue to dialogue.

Pope Francis will celebrate a Holy Mass for Migrants in Rome’s St. Peter’s Basilica on July 8, to mark the 6th anniversary of his visit to the tiny island of Lampedusa, off the coast of Sicily.

“Around 250 people will participate in the celebration, among whom will be migrants, refugees and those who are dedicated to saving their lives,” read a statement by the ‘ad interim’ director of the Holy See Press Office, Alessandro Gisotti.

“Taking part in the Mass, presided over by the Pope at the Altar of the Chair of St Peter, will be only those persons invited by the Migrants and Refugees Section of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, to whom the Holy Father has entrusted the organization of the event.”

ROME — In what Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople described as a “brave and bold” gesture, Pope Francis gave the patriarch a famous reliquary containing bone fragments believed to belong to St. Peter.

The only time the bronze reliquary has been displayed publicly was in November 2013, when Francis had it present for public veneration as he celebrated the closing Mass for the Year of Faith, opened by Pope Benedict XVI.

The bronze case contains nine of the bone fragments discovered during excavations of the necropolis under St. Peter’s Basilica that began in the 1940s.

In the 1960s, archaeologist Margherita Guarducci published a paper asserting that she had found St. Peter’s bones near the site identified as his tomb.

While no pope has ever declared the bones to be authentic, St. Paul VI announced in 1968 that the “relics” of St. Peter had been “identified in a way which we can hold to be convincing.”

Pope Paul took nine of the bone fragments, commissioned the bronze reliquary, and kept the relics in his private chapel in the papal apartments.

Francis removed them from the chapel June 29, the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul.

ROME - Thirty-six years after the disappearance of a 15-year old Italian girl named Emanuela Orlandi, the Vatican announced on Tuesday that two graves located in the German cemetery within Vatican grounds will be opened on July 11, following the allegations made by her family that her body is there.

“The decision is part of one of the files opened following a complaint of the family of Emanuela Orlandi that, as is known, in recent months has, among other things, reported the possible concealment of her body in the small cemetery located within the territory of the Vatican State,” the statement reads.

The order to open the graves came from the Vatican’s Promoter of Justice, Gian Piero Milano. It was issued June 27 and announced through a statement by the Vatican’s ad interim spokesperson, Alessandro Gisotti.

Relatives of Orlandi and of the people buried in the graves concerned will be present when they are opened, as will the head of the Vatican’s Gendarmerie, Domenico Giani.

By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis is informed of the tragedy that killed fourteen Russian sailors on board a deep water research submarine and is grieving for the victims.

Answering questions put to him by journalists, Alessandro Gisotti, the interim director of the Holy See Press Office, said the Pope has expressed his condolences and closeness to the families of the victims and to all who have been affected by the disaster.

A fire aboard a Russian navy research submarine on Monday reportedly caused fumes that poisoned the crew members of the vessel as it was taking measurements in Russian waters in the north of the country.

The ministry gave no details about the type of vessel. But Russian media reports say it was a nuclear mini-submarine used for special operations.

President Vladimir Putin, who is scheduled to be received in audience by Pope Francis in the Vatican on Thursday, has ordered an inquiry into the accident.

Cardinal O'Malley to Stay Bishop of Boston after Submitting Resignation
Published Jul 3, 2019 at 2:44 PM | Updated 6 hours ago

Cardinal Seán O’Malley will continue serving as the ninth bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Boston after Pope Francis rejected the cardinal’s letter of resignation, the Boston Globe reports.

Giving in his letter of resignation to the pope was a formality. All bishops are mandated by the church to submit a letter of resignation to the pope after their 75th birthday. It is commonplace for bishops to continue serving after they turn 75.

Because of Cardinal Seán's schedule, he was able to give the letter of resignation directly to the pope last week at the Vatican.

“The pope looked at him and said, ‘I think we’ll keep you there for a few more years,’” a spokesman told the Globe. “The cardinal is really quite touched by the pope’s confidence in him, and his support.”

New Vatican doc displays simplified, decentralized curia
Elise Harris   Jul 3, 2019

ROME - A preliminary outline of Pope Francis’s coming apostolic constitution on the Roman Curia reveals the merger of several more departments and an increased emphasis on the presence of laity as part of a reform hinged on decentralization and synodality and fueled by evangelization.

Tentatively titled Praedicate Evangelium, a draft of the constitution has been sent to the heads of all Vatican departments, bishops’ conferences, nuncios and certain law institutes, whose comments are being studied before the document’s publication.

According to a preliminary outline of the constitution which Crux has obtained, it seems the overall tone of the document will heavily stress the topics of synodality, the need for more lay leaders, including women, and a “healthy decentralization.”

Another priority for the reform appears to be the need to streamline, reducing the number of curial departments and “rationalizing” their functions in order to avoid a repetition of competences and to be more efficient and economize.

Divided into nine different sections, the outline shows the first three are dedicated to explaining the concept and function of the Roman Curia and its general norms. The following sections cover the structure, competencies and functions of the curial offices, referred to as “dicasteries.”

Analysis: New Vatican constitution to centralize power in state secretariat
By Ed Condon

Vatican City, Jul 2, 2019 / 03:15 pm (CNA).- Last week, Bishop Marcello Semeraro, secretary of the pope’s C6 Council of Cardinal Advisors announced that the group hoped to present Francis with a final draft of a new Vatican constitution in September.

Praedicate Evangelium, as the new governing document for the Roman curia is to be called, completes the reforming work already begun of combining various smaller Vatican departments into a more streamlined structure.

Focus on the forthcoming changes has largely fixed on the perception that a reformed and enlarged Dicastery for Evangelization will be “ranked above” the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, with the change said to imply a shift in priorities for the universal Church.

ROME - Pope Francis welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin to the Vatican July 4, and the two discussed the ongoing wars in Eastern Ukraine and in Syria, the Vatican said. Russia plays a major role in both conflicts.

At the end of the 55-minute private meeting, Alessandro Gisotti, interim director of the Vatican press office, issued a statement describing the discussions as “cordial.”

The pope and president, he said, “expressed their satisfaction at the development of bilateral relations,” which included the signing in Rome July 4 of a collaboration agreement between the Vatican’s Bambino Gesu Pediatric Hospital and pediatric hospitals in Russia.

Francis and Putin “then turned their attention to various questions of relevance to the life of the Catholic Church in Russia,” Gisotti said, as well as a discussion of “the ecological question and various themes relating to current international affairs, with particular reference to Syria, Ukraine and Venezuela,” where Russia has been supportive of embattled President Nicolas Maduro.

When reporters entered the room after the two had met privately, Putin told the pope, “Thank you for the time you have dedicated to me.”

“It was a very substantive, interesting discussion,” he said.

In the traditional gift exchange, Francis gave the Russian president a signed copy of his message for World Peace Day 2019 and an 18th-century etching of St. Peter’s Square “so you don’t forget Rome.”

Putin gave the pope a large icon of Sts. Peter and Paul and a DVD of a Russian film about the artist Michelangelo.

Pope's July prayer intention: "Integrity of Justice"
04 July 2019, 16:00

Pope Francis on Thursday released a video message accompanying his prayer intention for July, which this month is " Integrity of Justice".

In his prayer intention for the month of July 2019, Pope Francis calls us to pray that those who administer justice may work with integrity, and that the injustice which prevails in the world may not have the last word.

It has become the custom of Pope Francis to release a video message detailing his prayer intention for each month.

The full text of his intention is below:

The decisions made by judges influence the rights and property of citizens.

Their independence should keep them safe from favoritism and from pressures that could contaminate the decisions they have to make.

Judges must follow the example of Jesus, who never negotiates the truth.

Let us pray that those who administer justice may work with integrity, and that the injustice which prevails in the world may not have the last word.

French priest stripped of clergy status for abusing Scouts

PARIS - France’s Catholic Church pronounced a priest guilty of sexually abusing multiple Boy Scouts over several years and defrocked him Thursday, an unusually strong move that reflects France’s growing reckoning with clergy sex abuse.

The ruling by a church tribunal was the latest development in a case with repercussions that reached the highest levels of French Catholic leadership and the Vatican itself. The priest, Bernard Preynat, already confessed to abusing Boy Scouts during the 1970s and 1980s.

Preynat is believed to have abused as many as 85 boys and faces trial in a French court next year. The church tribunal said its internal investigation found he committed “criminal acts of sexual character against minors under 16.”

Among those accused of a cover-up in the Preynat case was France’s senior Catholic cleric, Cardinal Philippe Barbarin, and Cardinal Luis Ladaria, who now heads the Vatican office in charge of handling sex abuse cases.

Barbarin was convicted earlier this year of failing to report Preynat to police. Barbarin appealed but went to the Vatican to offer his resignation. Pope Francis refused to accept it.

French magistrates are also investigating accusations against the Vatican’s ambassador to France made by men who say he groped them. The envoy, Archbishop Luigi Ventura, has denied wrongdoing. The Vatican so far has not lifted his diplomatic immunity.

The Pope and the Amazon: the Church cannot remain silent
06 July 2019, 13:40

Pope Francis sends a message to a meeting of “Laudato sì” Communities and reminds them how “social justice and ecology are deeply interconnected”.
By Vatican News

There are several dozen “Laudato sì” Communities in Italy, and around the world. All of them are committed to an "integral ecology", a lifestyle consistent with the values contained in Pope Francis’ encyclical of the same name.

The 2nd Forum of “Laudato sì” Communities is being held in the Italian town of Amatrice. In August 2016, the territory was devastated by a 6.2 magnitude earthquake that left 247 people dead and dozens of families homeless.

The memory of Amatrice

In a message to Forum participants, read on his behalf by the Prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for Communication, Paolo Ruffini, the Pope recalls the victims of the earthquake and speaks of the “high price” paid by the entire region.

The memory of Amatrice is always in my heart, he writes. What happened here helps us focus on “the imbalances that devastate our ‘common home’”. Invariably, “it is the poor who pay the highest price of environmental devastation”, says the Pope. Quoting from his Encyclical, Pope Francis adds: "There will be no new relationship with nature without a new human being

Pope Francis on Friday enrolled a Portuguese archbishop as a new saint of the Catholic Church and approved decrees bringing a woman and 7 men closer to sainthood.

Pope Francis also authorized a decree recognizing a miracle through the intercession of Venerable Servant of God Fulton Sheen of the United States, known for his preaching, especially on television and radio.

The Titular Archbishop of Newport and former Bishop of Rochester was born to an Irish family in El Paso, Illinois, on 8 May 1895.  He discovered his call to the priesthood at the age of 24 and was ordained a priest in 1919.  He pursued higher studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington (US),  the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium) and the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome.

He returned to the US in 1926 and began teaching at the Catholic University of America until 1950.

A gifted teacher and speaker, Sheen’s homilies were much appreciated.  In 1930, he began participating in the Sunday radio programme entitled “The Catholic Hour”, which reached an estimated four million listeners at the height of its popularity.

In 1951, he began hosting a weekly television series, “Life is Worth Living”, on matters of faith that attracted some 30 million viewers.

He died in New York at the age of 84, on 9 December 1979.

With the recognition of a miracle through his intercession, Archbishop Sheen has now been cleared for beatification, following which he will have the title, Blessed.
