ROME - For years the credibility of the Eastern European Marian pilgrimage site of Medjugorje and the miraculous happenings that allegedly occur there, have been the subject of questioning and doubt. But its continued following and devotion have pushed the Vatican into recognizing its validity.

Well, sort of.

“Medjugorje is an international reference point for prayer where extraordinary spiritual fruits can be touched by hand,” said Polish Archbishop Henryk Hoser, the Holy See’s Special Envoy to Medjugorje, in a July 22 interview with the publication of the Italian bishops, Avvenire.

The prelate pointed to the number of conversions, vocations and sacraments that take place at the pilgrimage site as an example of the positive effects that this place has on the Catholic community, adding that he doesn’t believe “there are traces of heresy.”

Hoser, 76, was appointed to his role by Pope Francis in February 2017 and is today in charge of administering to the pastoral needs of pilgrims and serving as a liaison between the local Franciscan community and the Catholic hierarchy.

By Devin Watkins

He passed many a summer evening in the quiet and relative cool of the gardens behind the papal residence at Castel Gandolfo during his time on the Chair of Peter.

On Thursday evening, Pope emeritus Benedict XVI relived those peaceful moments with a quick trip to the Alban Hills outside Rome.

Prayerful evening stroll and supper

According to the Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, the Pope emeritus stopped off first at the Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo to pray the Rosary while strolling through its spacious gardens.

Benedict XVI spent most of his summers as Pope in the papal residence there, enjoying the area’s slightly cooler temperatures compared to the sweltering heat in central Rome.

He would usually stay for the months of July and August, holding the Sunday Angelus prayer in the square in front of the palace.

After his Thursday evening walk, the Pope emeritus stopped off at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sandstone in nearby Rocca di Papa.

Then he had dinner at with Bishop Raffaello Martinelli at the bishop’s residence in Frascati.

It was precisely Bishop Martinelli who had invited the Pope emeritus for supper

Cuban Cardinal Ortega, longtime voice of Cuba's poor, dies at 82

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- A proud Cuban who pressed for greater freedom for his church and for an end to the U.S. embargo on his homeland, Cardinal Jaime Ortega Alamino, retired archbishop of Havana, died July 26 at the age of 82.

Serving as head of the Archdiocese of Havana for almost 35 years pushed the cardinal into a prominent role as a spokesman for Cuban Catholics on national and international issues, but he also devoted much of his energy to supporting the island's active Catholics and encouraging them as missionaries to their neighbors.

He spent eight months in a communist-government labor camp in 1966-67, but he went on to become a cardinal and to welcome St. John Paul II to Cuba in 1998, Pope Benedict XVI to the island in March 2012, and Pope Francis in September 2015 and again, briefly, the following February.

FEATURE: Cardinal O’Malley Was in 4th Place at Last Conclave’s 1st Voting Session, Discloses New Book Giving an Inside Look
Irish Vatican Veteran Journalist Gerry O’Connell Writes ‘The Election of Pope Francis: An Inside Account of the Conclave That Changed History’
July 25, 2019 16:47•Deborah Castellano Lubov

Cardinal Sean O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston, received the fourth most votes in the first round at the last conclave.

These findings about the President of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, who is a close adviser to Francis, are fruits of a recent book by Gerry O’Connell, Irish-born Vatican veteran journalist and correspondent for America magazine, called ‘The Election of Pope Francis: An Inside Account of the Conclave That Changed History‘ (Orbis Books, 2019).

Beyond various insider details recounted, Gerry also sheds light on how he and his wife, well-known Argentinian Vatican journalist of La Nacion, Elizabetta Pique, had Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, their dear friend, to their home for dinner before the conclave began.

Other results, less known, are presented in this work. For instance, it details that in the first voting session of the last conclave, Cardinal Scola had 30 votes, coming in first place, Cardinal Bergoglio, 26 votes, coming in second, Cardinal Ouellet, with 22 votes, coming in third, Cardinal O’Malley, with 10 votes, coming in fourth, and Cardinal Scherer, with four votes, coming in sixth.

Pope at Angelus: the Our Father is the synthesis of every prayer
28 July 2019, 14:41

Pope Francis greets the faithful at the Sunday Angelus  (Vatican Media )
At the Angelus, Pope Francis reflects on the Our Father, “one of the most precious gifts” Jesus has left us.
By Christopher Wells

In his reflection on Sunday’s Gospel, Pope Francis said that the disciples wanted “to experience the same ‘quality’” of prayer was present in Jesus’ relationship with the Father. “They could see that prayer was an essential dimension in the life of their Master,” he said, noting that “each of His important actions was characterized by extended periods of prayer.” They recognized, too, that Jesus "did not pray like the other masters of the time”; rather, “His prayer is an intimate link with the Father.”

When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, the Pope said, the Lord did not simply “give an abstract definition of prayer, or teach an effective technique for praying in order to ‘obtain’ something.” Instead, Jesus shared with them His own experience of prayer, “putting them directly in contact with the Father, and arousing in them a longing for a personal relationship with Him.”

Vatican: Bones found at cemetery do not belong to missing woman

(Credit: CNS photo/Vatican Media.)
ROME - The Vatican press office said that the results of a morphological analysis of bones and bone fragments found at an ossuary in a Vatican cemetery concluded that none belonged to Emanuela Orlandi, a young Italian woman who has been missing for more than 30 years.

Giovanni Arcudi, the forensic anthropologist who led the scientific investigation of the remains found at the Vatican’s Teutonic Cemetery, “did not find any bone structure dating back to the period after the end of the 1800s,” the Vatican said.

The forensic team concluded its study of the bones July 28.

However, an expert representing the Orlandi family requested about 70 bone remains be tested in a laboratory, despite objections by Arcudi and his team who believe the bones display signs of being “very old.”

Nonetheless, those bone samples were catalogued and held by the Vatican police to be “available to the promoter of justice.”

Pope Francis makes surprise visit to ailing nun
30 July 2019, 14:39

Pope Francis visited an elderly nun at the Daughters of Charity’s house in Rome on Sunday, a gesture of kindness for her years of service at the Casa Santa Marta.
By Devin Watkins

Sister Maria Mucci spent many years serving Pope Francis, as well as numerous Vatican visitors, at the Casa Santa Marta.

Having fallen ill, she is now in the infirmary at her congregation’s house in Rome, the Regina Mundi House.

So, on Sunday evening, Pope Francis popped in for a quick visit to the ailing nun.

He also paused for a picture with members of the Daughters of Charity community staffing the residence, along with employees and guests.

At the end of his visit, the Holy Father gave them all his blessing.

Fr. Tomaž Mavrič, CM, the Order’s Superior General, announced the news on his Facebook page.

Venerating his predecessor’s relic

Another special moment occurred when Pope Francis contemplated a relic of his predecessor, Pope St. John Paul II.

Vatican City to implement system for reporting abuse
30 July 2019, 17:10

Arial view of Vatican City State
Vatican City State is to implement a system for reporting crimes and cases of negligence regarding the abuse of minors and vulnerable adults by the end of the year.
By Vatican News

The Cardinal Vicar of Vatican City State announced Tuesday that “a public, permanent, and easily accessible system for reporting crimes and negligence in the area of child abuse and vulnerable adults” will be put in place by the end of the year.

On the same day, Cardinal Angelo Comastri sent a letter to the heads of all Vatican Dicasteries and associated spiritual assistants.

According to the Osservatore Romano, the missive contained details on the procedure for bringing to light any information and accusations of abuse.

Earlier this year, Pope Francis promulgated new rules for the protection of minors within Vatican territory and the Roman Curia, as well as throughout the universal Church, both of which took effect on 1 June.

John Paul II Institute confirms fidelity to original vision

The Pontifical Lateran University, to which the Pontifical John Paul II Theological Institute is attached
Monsignor Pierangelo Sequeri, President of the Pontifical John Paul II Theological Institute, responds to questions raised about the renewal of the Institute promoted by Pope Francis.
By Christopher Wells

In view of ongoing controversy surrounding the renewal of the Pontifical John Paul II Theological Institute for Matrimonial and Family Science, the Institute has published a statement explaining some of the decisions, but rejecting accusations, which it said were based on information that was “distorted, factious, sometimes in bad faith.” The statement also noted that some reports failed to seek verification of the story from the source.

Questions raised

In a letter to the President of the Institute, Monsignor Pierangelo Sequeri, and copied to the Grand Chancellor, Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, some students and former students had expressed their concerns about the direction of the John Paul II Institute. Specifically, they questioned the elimination of core courses in Fundamental and Special Moral Theology, and the decision to remove long-time professors at the Institute. This has given rise to doubts about whether the Institute will continue to remain faithful to John Paul II’s vision for the Institute, and about whether they will be able to continue in their original course of studies

Pope urges scouts to make service their way of life

Pope Francis on Saturday met some 5,000 scout rangers and rovers from over 20 countries of the International Union of Guides and Scouts of Europe. The papal audience concluded the weeklong Euromoot 2019 event of the young men and women.
By Robin Gomes

Pope Francis on Saturday urged scouts to give of themselves to others by building, serving and caring for others, saying it will free them from within and enrich the world.

He made the exhortation to some 5,000 young scout men and women from over 20 countries belonging to the International Union of Guides and Scouts of Europe.  They met the pope at the end of their Euromoot 2019 event, July 27-August 3, that saw them travelling along historical itineraries of Italy and converging on Rome.

“Give, and it will be given to you”

Noting that during their itinerary, they contemplated Saints Paul, Benedict, Cyril and Methodius, Francis of Assisi and Catherine of Siena who travelled through Italy,  the Pope said they gave their lives for others without keeping anything for themselves.  The Pope said that the “Gospel is the map of life” where Jesus indicates a clear course to happiness: “Give, and it will be given to you.”

The Pope said that for Jesus, the starting point is giving, not having.  It consists of coming out of the comforts of the armchair and going out to the field to give the world a little bit of goodness.

Pope Francis' letter on the 160th anniversary of the death of the Curé of Ars, St John Vianney: support, closeness and encouragement to all priests who, despite their hard work and disappointments, celebrate the sacraments every day and accompany the people of God.
By Sergio Centofanti

Pope Francis has written to priests recalling the 160th anniversary of the death of the Curé of Ars, Patron Saint of parish priests around the world. It is a letter that expresses encouragement and closeness to "brother priests, who without making noise" leave everything to engage in the daily life of communities; those who work in the "trenches"; those who confront an endless variety of situations in your effort “to care for and accompany God’s people.”   “I want to say a word to each of you, writes the Pope, who, often without fanfare and at personal cost, amid weariness, infirmity and sorrow, carry out your mission of service to God and to your people.  Despite the hardships of the journey, you are writing the finest pages of the priestly life.”

Pope at Angelus: True treasure is in heaven

Pope Francis during his Angelus address says that Jesus invites us to consider that riches can chain the heart and distract it from the true treasure that is in heaven.

Above a sunny St Peter’s Square, Pope Francis joined the faithful on Sunday for the traditional Angelus Prayer. In his remarks he reflected on the day’s Gospel reading from Luke and he invited those gathered to read this beautiful passage. It opens with the scene of a man who stands up in the crowd and asks Jesus to resolve a juridical question about the inheritance of a family.

The Pope explained that Jesus “does not address the question, and exhorts us to stay away from greed, that is, the greed to possess.”

Jesus and the rich man

Jesus recounts the parable of the rich fool, who believes he is happy because he has had the good fortune of an exceptional year and feels secure for the goods he has accumulated.  Pope Francis pointed out that “the story comes to life when the contrast between what the rich man plans for himself and what God promises him emerges.”

WARSAW, Poland - Senior Vatican representatives joined the first officially approved church festival at Medjugorje, three months after Catholic pilgrimages to the site in Bosnia-Herzegovina were authorized by the pope.

“We are called to share the difficulties of our contemporaries and we have a responsibility to care for them,” Archbishop Rino Fisichella, president of the Pontifical Council for New Evangelization, told 60,000 young people from 97 countries Aug. 5.

“For something to happen, we have to offer something: our poverty, our misery, our borders, our contradictions. But God will change all that because God works miracles,” he said during the final evening of Mladifest, or Youth Festival.

Cardinal Angelo De Donatis, papal vicar of the Rome Diocese, formally opened the event Aug. 2. Fourteen archbishops and bishops and about 700 Catholic priests joined the festivities, which concluded Aug. 6.

Meanwhile, the pope’s apostolic visitor to Medjugorje, Archbishop Henryk Hoser, who presided over the festival Aug. 3, said the hilltop shrine had become “a place of meeting and knowing,” adding that “the secret of Medjugorje” was “an invisible reality, but intense and very present.”

More than 40,000 apparitions have been claimed over 38 years at Medjugorje, where six teenagers reported first seeing an apparition of Mary June 24, 1981 while herding sheep.

Some of the visionaries say Mary still appears to them daily with messages at the town, which was largely untouched by the 1992 to 1995 civil war in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

In May 2018, Pope Francis named Hoser as apostolic visitor, after a papal commission recommended that Medjugorje, which attracts up to 3 million visitors annually, be designated a pontifical shrine with Vatican oversight.

A ban on pilgrimages organized by Catholic dioceses and parishes was lifted under a papal decree May 12, making possible the five-day festival

Pope at Audience: Be God’s instruments of healing, like Apostles
07 August 2019, 11:28

Pope Francis resumes his weekly General Audiences by continuing his catechesis on the Acts of the Apostles, urging the faithful trust in the Lord, and act in His name.
By Francesca Merlo

In his catechesis on the Acts of the Apostles, Pope Francis focused this week on the first account of healing in the Book of Acts (Acts 3:3-6): Peter and John’s healing of the Paralytic.

“In the Acts of the Apostles”, began Pope Francis, “the preaching of the Gospel does not only rely on words, but on concrete actions that bear witness to the truth of the proclamation”. These, said the Pope, are wonders and signs, which “confirm” the work of the Apostles, “showing that they act in the name of Christ.”

Pope: isolationism and populism lead to war
09 August 2019, 13:23

In an interview with the Italian daily La Stampa-Vatican Insider, Pope Francis says that Europe needs to respect identities of peoples without closing itself in. He touches upon several issues such as politics, migrants, the Synod on the Amazonia, the environment and the evangelizing mission of the Church.
By Robin Gomes

Europe must be saved because it is a heritage that "cannot and must not be dissolved".  Dialogue and listening, "starting from one's own identity" and from human and Christian values, are the antidote against “sovereignism” and populism, and are also the engine for "a process of relaunching" that never ends.

Pope Francis spoke about these and other issues with Domenico Agasso, the Vatican expert and coordinator of “Vatican Insider”, the online project of Italy’s daily newspaper "La Stampa".

Europe and its founding fathers

The Pope hopes that Europe will continue to be the dream of its founding fathers.  It is a vision that became a reality by implementing the historical, cultural and geographical unity that characterizes the continent.

Despite Europe’s "problems of administration and internal disagreements", the Pope is optimistic about the appointment of Ursula von der Leyen as President of the European Commission.  He is happy about her appointment “because a woman can be the right person to revive the strength of the founding fathers.”  “Women”, he said, “know how to bring people together and unite."
