Synod of Bishops for the Pan-Amazon Region, Vatican, Oct. 6-27, 201

Amazon Synod: The Church committed to be an ally with Amazonia
26 October 2019, 23:18

Five chapters, plus an introduction and a brief conclusion: the Final Document of the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for the Pan-Amazon Region was released on the evening of 26 October, by the express will of the Pope. The document deals with a wide variety of topics, including mission, inculturation, integral ecology, defence of the indigenous peoples, an Amazonian rite, the role of women, and new ministries, especially in areas where access to the Eucharist is lacking.
By Vatican News

Conversion: this is the common thread running through the final document of the Pan-Amazon Synod. Conversion is expressed with different accents: integral, pastoral, cultural, ecological, and synodal. The text is the result of the “open, free, and respectful” exchange undertaken in the three weeks of the work of the Synod, to tell the story of the challenges and the potentialities of Amazonia, the “biological heart” of the world, spread over nine countries and inhabited by over 33 million people, including about 2.5 million indigenous persons. Yet this region, by area the most vulnerable in the world on account of climate change caused by human beings, is on “a rampant race to death”. And thus the Document reiterates that a new direction is necessary in order to save it, to avoid a catastrophic impact on the entire planet.

Chapter I – Integral conversion

At the conclusion of the Document, the Synod Fathers invoke the protection of the Virgin of the Amazon, Mother of the Amazon, venerated under various titles throughout the region.

Pope Francis: Amazon Synod involves everyone
26 October 2019, 21:40

Following the approval of the Final Document on Saturday, Pope Francis closes the work of the Synod of Bishops for the Amazon, and tells them “we are all winners when we carry out the Church’s pastoral work together.”
By Vatican News

Pope Francis began his address to the Synod fathers and participants by summarizing the four dimensions discussed at the Synod: cultural, ecological, social, and pastoral.

Cultural dimension
Beginning with the cultural dimension, the Pope said he was particularly pleased with the discussions regarding inculturation, evaluating and respecting cultures. Inculturation is a tradition of the Church, he said, recalling that the issue was addressed at the Puebla Conference 40 years ago.

Ecological dimension

Amazon Synod Final Press Briefing: The hope that comes from listening, reflecting, praying
26 October 2019, 22:19

Following the approval of the final document on the Synod of Bishops for the Amazon, journalists hear from Cardinal Michael Czerny SJ, and Bishop David De Aguirre Guinea, OP, in the Holy See Press Office.
By Vatican News

Details of the final document dominated the last of the Synod press briefings in the Holy See Press Office on Saturday evening. The two guests on the podium responded to journalists’ questions and shared their own insights on the main themes that emerged.

Bishop David Martìnez De Aguirre Guinea, OP

Bishop David Martìnez De Aguirre Guinea is Apostolic Vicar of Puerto Maldonado in Peru. He said one of the strongest themes to come out of the Synod was inculturation, how to harmonize local cultures with the Church. He also said it was important for indigenous people to reclaim their role as protagonists. The final document reflects the concerns of the local bishops for their territory, he said, but that the Church allies herself with the people of the Amazon Region in defense of their land and of life.

The Bishop described one of the strongest images of the Synod as being that of Pope Francis interacting personally with the indigenous people present. He said he returns to the Amazon hopeful and encouraged.

Archbishop Gaenswein: Claim Benedict XVI Opened Path for Women Deacons ‘Totally Absurd’
The Pope Emeritus’ personal secretary firmly rejects Brazilian synod father’s claim that a 2009 papal decree paved the way for women deacons.
Edward Pentin

Benedict XVI’s personal secretary has said a claim put forward yesterday by a Brazilian synod father that Benedict revised canon law in 2009 to allow the ordination of women deacons is “totally absurd and wrong.”

Archbishop Georg Gänswein, prefect of the Pontifical Household, said he had not spoken to the Pope Emeritus about the matter and his comments to the Register “come only from me.”

His remarks come after Bishop Evaristo Pascoal Spengler of Marajó, Brazil, told reporters yesterday that the synod had opened a path to the ordination of women deacons.

Three Key Paragraphs of Amazon Synod’s Final Document
Full texts of the propositions relating to the ordination of married men, a female diaconate and an Amazonian rite, their voting numbers, plus some brief observations.
Edward Pentin

Here below are the texts of the three most controversial and discussed matters of the synod which wraps up on Sunday (Vatican working translation).

Female Diaconate

103. In the many consultations carried out in the Amazon, the fundamental role of religious and lay women in the Church of the Amazon and its communities was recognized and emphasized, given the multiple services they provide. In a large number of these consultations, the permanent diaconate for women was requested. For this reason the theme was important during the Synod. Already in 2016, Pope Francis had created a “Study Commission on the Diaconate of Women” which, as a Commission, arrived at a partial result based on what the reality of the diaconate of women was like in the early centuries of the Church and its implications for today. We would therefore like to share our experiences and reflections with the Commission and await its results.

Pope at Synod Closing Mass: The prayer of the poor reaches the clouds
27 October 2019, 11:17

Pope Francis celebrates Holy Mass in St Peter’s Basilica for the closing of the Synod of Bishops for the Pan-Amazon Region. In his homily, he presents three models of prayer.
By Vatican News

The Pope focused his reflections on three figures in this Sunday’s readings: a Pharisee, a tax collector, and a poor person. Each of them tells us something about how to pray, and suggests the kind of prayer that is “pleasing to God”.

The prayer of the Pharisee

Pope Francis said the Pharisee begins well by giving thanks to God, “because the best prayer is that of gratitude and praise”. Immediately afterwards, though, he adds he is grateful because he is “not like other men”. Filled with self-assurance “about his own ability to keep the commandments, his own merits and virtues, he is focused only on himself. He is without love”, said the Pope.

The Pharisee “ends up praising himself instead of praying”, continued Pope Francis. He stands in the temple of God, “but the one he worships is himself”. He forgets both God and his neighbour, considering others mere “leftovers” from which to keep one’s distance.

How many times do those in prominent positions “raise up walls to increase distances, making other people feel even more rejected”, despising their traditions, erasing their history, occupying their lands, and usurping their goods, asked the Pope. “How much alleged superiority, transformed into oppression and exploitation, exists even today”?

Pope at Angelus: Synod for the Amazon “put out into the deep"
27 October 2019, 12:22

Pope Francis reflects on the Synod for the Pan-Amazon Region that concluded with the celebration of Holy Mass in St Peter’s Basilica on Sunday morning.
By Vatican News

Before reciting the Angelus prayer this Sunday, Pope Francis commented on the readings of the closing Mass for the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for the Pan-Amazon Region, and how they relate to the Synod itself.

Hearing the cry of the poor

The first reading, from the Book of Sirach, reminds us of the starting point of the Synod journey, he said: the prayer of the poor, which "will reach to the clouds" because "God hears the prayer of the one who is wronged".

“The cry of the poor, together with that of the earth, came to us from the Amazon”, said the Pope. After these three weeks of the Synod, “we cannot pretend we have not heard it”, and we cannot remain indifferent, he said.

Moving forward together

Pope Francis went on to describe the Synod itself as “walking together, comforted by the courage and consolations that come from the Lord”. It was a time of sincere listening and service, he said, “experiencing the beauty of moving forward together”.
In the second reading, Saint Paul expressed his last wish: not something for himself but for the Gospel, “so that it may be proclaimed to all nations”. This comes first and counts more than anything, said Pope Francis.

Pope Francis: Off-the-Cuff, About the Synod
The Holy Father’s Comments at Final General Congregation of the Special Assembly
October 28, 2019 00:02

Here is a translation of the words the Holy Father Francis expressed off-the-cuff on October 26, 2019, in the course of the 16th and last General Congregation of the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for the Pan-Amazonian Region, held from October 6-27, 2019 on the theme: “Amazonia: New Pathways for the Church and for An Integral Ecology.” The text was provided by the Vatican and translated by ZENIT.
* * *
The Holy Father’s Address

First of all, I want to thank all of you who have given this testimony of work, of listening, of seeking, of seeking to put in practice this synodal spirit that we are learning to establish, and which we have still been unable to complete. However, we are on a journey; we are on a good journey. And we are increasingly understanding what it means to walk together; we are understanding what it is to discern, what it means to listen, what it means to incorporate the Church’s rich tradition in critical moments. Some think that tradition is a museum of old things. I like to repeat what Gustav Mahler said: “Tradition is the safeguard of the future and not the custody of ashes.” It’s like the root from which the sap comes that makes the tree grow so that it bears fruits. To take that and to make it go forward is how the early Fathers conceived what tradition is. To receive and to walk in the same direction, with that very lovely triple dimension of Vincent of Lerins already in the 5th century: “Christian dogma, remaining absolutely intact and unaltered, is consolidated over the years, develops with time  and deepens with age” ( Cf. Primo Commonitorio, 23: PL 50, 667-668)] Thank you for all this.

One of the topics that was voted on, which had a majority  — three topics had a majority for the next Synod –, is that of Synodality. I don’t know if it will or will not be chosen, I’ve still not decided, I’m reflecting and thinking, but I can certainly say that we have walked a lot and we still have to walk more in the journey of Synodality; thank you all very much for your company.

The Post-Synodal Exhortation that – it’s not obligatory for the Pope to do it – which most probably – no, sorry, the easiest would be: “well, here is the Document, you all see to it. In any case, a word of the Pope about what he has lived in this Synod might do good. I would like to do it before the end of the year so that not much time goes by; it all depends on the time I’ll have to think.

Motu proprio of Pope Francis: Vatican Archives to be renamed
28 October 2019, 17:00

The Vatican Secret Archives will now be known as the Vatican Apostolic Archives.

Pope Francis has issued a Motu proprio, the incipit “L’esperienza storica”, which changes the name of the Vatican archives.  Rather than being known as the Vatican Secret Archives, they shall in the future be known as the Vatican Apostolic Archives.  The change of name takes effect immediately and comes after a period of consultation with various priests and bishops, especially those who themselves work in the archives.

The Motu proprio notes that the Vatican’s archives were founded at the beginning of the 17th Century. The Church collected and stored important documents and writings from both religious and secular spheres of life. In the early years the archives were not open for scholars to visit, rather copies of documents produced by Vatican workers were sent around the world to scholars who requested them. For this reason, the Pope says, the philosopher and mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz referred to the Archive as the “Central Archive of Europe.” The archives were opened to visiting scholars in 1881.

Abrahamic religions: no to euthanasia, assisted suicide, yes to palliative care
28 October 2019, 14:45

Representatives of the Abrahamic monotheistic religions condemn euthanasia and assisted suicide, and encourage palliative care everywhere and for everyone
By Robin Gomes

“We oppose any form of euthanasia – that is the direct, deliberate and intentional act of taking life – as well as physician-assisted suicide – that is  the direct, deliberate and intentional support of committing suicide – because they fundamentally contradict the inalienable value of human life, and therefore are inherently and consequentially morally and religiously wrong, and should be forbidden without exceptions.”

Representatives of the Abrahamic religions made the statement in a position paper that they signed and released in the Vatican on Monday regarding end-of-life issues, such as euthanasia, assisted suicide and palliative care.

The term, Abrahamic monotheistic religions, derives from the Old Testament biblical figure Abraham who is recognized by Jews, Christians, Muslims and others.

After the release of the position paper, the 30 signatories were received in audience by Pope Francis in the Vatican.  Among them were some cardinals, rabbis, including David Rosen and Syamsul Anwar of Indonesia’s second-largest Islamic organization, Muhammadiyah.

Pope at Mass: Christian hope is like the air we breathe

To be men of hope we must not be attached to anything; and live, instead, "in tension" towards an encounter with the Lord. If we lose this perspective, life becomes static and immobile. Those were Pope Francis’ words this morning during his homily at the Casa Santa Marta, all centered on Christian hope.
Debora Donnini - Vatican City

Hope is like throwing an anchor to the other shore. Pope Francis uses this image at morning Mass at the Casa Santa Marta to exhort people to live "in tension" towards an encounter with the Lord, otherwise they will end up corrupted and Christian life will risk becoming a "philosophical doctrine". His reflection begins with the First Reading of today's Liturgy, taken from St Paul's letter to the Romans (Rom 8:18-25) in which the Apostle "sings a hymn to hope". Certainly "some of the Romans" have come to complain and Paul exhorts us to look ahead. "I believe that the sufferings of the present time are not comparable to the future glory that will be revealed in us," he says, speaking also of Creation as "waiting with eager longer” for revelation. "This is hope: to live prostrated towards the revelation of the Lord, towards an encounter with the Lord", stresses the Pope. There may be suffering and problems but "this is tomorrow", while today "you have the security" of the promise that it is the Holy Spirit who "awaits" us and "works" already from this moment. Hope is in fact "like throwing an anchor to the other shore " and clinging to the rope. But "not only we", but of all Creation "in hope will be freed", will enter into the glory of the children of God. And we too, who possess the "firstfruits of the Spirit", the security deposit, "groan inwardly waiting for adoption".

Pope at Audience: The Holy Spirit and the unchained power of the Gospel
30 October 2019, 11:37

Pope Francis during his weekly General Audience says the Holy Spirit is the protagonist of the Church's mission.
By Lydia O'Kane

Despite pilgrims and tourists having their umbrellas to the ready for Wednesday’s General Audience, the brief drizzle that descended on St Peter’s Square then turned into a clear sky as Pope Francis reflected on his continuing catechesis on the Acts of the Apostles.

He told those gathered that in this book, one can see how “the Holy Spirit is the protagonist of the Church's mission: it is He who guides the journey of the evangelizers showing them the path to follow.”

Pope Francis blesses Our Lady of Luján statues during General Audience
30 October 2019, 08:48

During the General Audience on Wednesday, Pope Francis meets Bishops of the Forces from both the UK and Argentina where they exchange a replica of the statue of Our Lady of Luján, which was brought to the UK by British troops during the Falkland War in 1982.

During the ceremony in St Peter’s Square, the two copies were blessed by Pope Francis.

The statue of the Virgin Mary, Patroness of Argentina, will be returned to its native country,

A replica, will be presented to the Catholic Military Cathedral of St Michael and St George in Aldershot, England.

After his installation as Bishop of the Forces, Bishop Mason was contacted by Bishop Olivera, who asked if the statue could be returned.

The offer of a replica for the Aldershot Cathedral was also made, which Bishop Paul was more than happy to accept.

The story goes that when Argentinian troops invaded the Falkland Islands in April 1982, they brought with them the statue, a copy of the 1630 original, which is located in the Basilica of Lujan in Argentina.

St John Paul II visited the original statue in Luján in 1982.

Pan Amazon or Pistoia Synod?
30/10/2019
By José Antonio Ureta

Perhaps for fear of Cardinals Brandmüller, Müller, and Burke, and not to prove Bishop Athanasius Schneider right, the Vatican judged it prudent to remove the Pachamama statue from the closing Mass of the Special Assembly of the Synod for the Pan Amazon Region. Perhaps for the same reason, the scandalous pantheistic references of the Instrumentum laboris and its commendations of pagan religions as alternative instruments of salvation had their rough edges diplomatically rounded off in the Final Document.

However, one of the shells of the German-made cluster bomb embodied by this Synod brought in the Final Document an explosive charge greater than that it had in its preparatory documents: the ambitious ecclesiological revolution that corresponds to Leonardo Boff’s ultimate golden dreams when writing his book, Ecclesiogenesis: The Base Communities Reinvent the Church.[1]

On Amazon synod being "stacked." It's true if you mean majority attended "ex officio": all 113 heads of dioceses&vicariates in the Amazon, 13 heads of Roman Curia offices, 11 cardinals/bishops on pre-synod council. (for total of 137 of the 185)

Italian bishops’ mission org publishes ‘prayer to Pachamama’ in official booklet
Jeanne Smits, Paris correspondent

Analysis
October 29, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) A prayer to Pachamama, the “Mother Earth” venerated by indigenous tribes such as the Aymara and Quechua in the Andes but also in the northern plains of Argentina and in Brazil near Bolivia and Peru, has been found in an official booklet of the Fondazione Missio (Mission Foundation) of the Italian bishops’ conference.

The prayer is presented without warning about the fact that it is addressed not to God — another prayer in the publication, written in the same letter-type and the same color scheme, is addressed to the “Most Holy Trinity” — but to a pagan divinity, asking for material prosperity and aiming to placate the spirits of the Earth.

The booklet is part of a series of resources presenting the work and aims of the Catholic mission and its missionaries, with a special focus on the Amazon Synod that took place in Rome from October 6 to October 27.

It was published before the opening of the synod. The presence of the “Pachamama” in an official publication of de Italian bishops’ mission agency suggests that both the group comprising indigenous natives of the Amazon region and their European-type accompaniers and the Catholic hierarchy in Rome were fully aware of the “Mother Earth”–type cult with syncretic Christian overtones that repeated itself in the Vatican gardens and the church of Santa Maria in Traspontina near Saint Peter’s Basilica and at an “Amazonian” Via Crucis.

This sheds a whole new light on the presence of the carved wooden images of naked pregnant women whom Pope Francis himself designated as “Pachamama” statuettes.

As significant doings go in the wake of the Synod, that the Vatican’s own message operation is honing in on “development of doctrine” – in the specific context of “papal magisterium” and the role of women – is about as Flashing Red Light as it gets :

Development of doctrine is a people that walks together
29 October 2019, 11:42

The Synod for the Amazon has provoked a lively debate among Catholics. There are some who fear going astray from the path of Tradition. The history of the Church shows the path of fidelity.
By Sergio Centofanti

Two thousand years of history teach us that the development of doctrine in the Church is a people that journeys together. Journeying through the ages, the Church sees and learns new things, always growing deeper in her understanding of the Faith. During this journey, there are sometimes people who stop along the way, others who run too quickly, and yet others who take a different path.

Appeal to unity: Walking together toward Christ

Fidelity to Jesus does not, therefore, mean being fixated on some text written at a given time in these two thousand years of history; rather, it is fidelity to His people, the people of God walking together toward Christ, united with His Vicar and with the Successors of the Apostles. As Pope Francis said at the Angelus on Sunday, at the conclusion of the Synod:

“What was the Synod? It was, as the word says, a journey undertaken together, comforted by the courage and consolations that come from the Lord. We walked, looking each other in the eye and listening to each other, sincerely, without concealing difficulties, experiencing the beauty of moving forward together in order serve”.
