Pope at Mass: ‘Make room in your lives for the Word of God’
26 January 2020, 11:26

Pope Francis says we need God’s Word so that we can hear, amid the thousands of other words in our daily lives, that one word that speaks to us not about things, but about life. His call to the faithful comes during Holy Mass to celebrate the first Sunday of the World of God.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis celebrated Holy Mass on ‘Sunday of the Word of God’ urging Christians to make room in their lives for the Sacred Scriptures.

Sunday, 26 January, marks a new observance established by the Pope in his Motu Proprio “Aperuit illis”, to be celebrated annually on the third Sunday in Ordinary Time, and to be dedicated to the celebration, study and spreading of the Word of God.

He began his homily with a reflection on the Gospel of Matthew that introduces the ministry of Jesus: “The One who is the Word of God has come to speak with us, in his own words and by his own life.”

“Let us go to the roots of his preaching,” the Pope said, “to the very source of the word of life,” which “helps us to know how, where and to whom Jesus began to preach.”

Pope at Angelus: ‘Be heralds and witnesses of God’s love’
26 January 2020, 12:31

Pope Francis reflects on the Gospel reading of the day and says all people of goodwill are called to be open to the mercy of the Father and allow themselves to be transformed by the grace of the Holy Spirit.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis addressed the pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the Sunday Angelus encouraging them to allow themselves to be transformed by the grace of the spirit and to become heralds and messengers of the saving Word of God.

He reflected on the Gospel of the day which tells of how Jesus met the disciples on the shores of the Sea of Galilee and called them to conversion.

Father Aemilius is the Pope's new Personal Secretary
26 January 2020, 11:07

The Uruguayan priest, whom Pope Francis has known since 2006, is chosen to take the place left open by Father Pedacchio last December.
By Vatican News

Pope Francis and the Uruguayan priest, Gonzalo Aemilius, have known each other since 2006, since Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, made contact with him because he had heard of Father Aemilius’  work with street kids.

Gonzalo Aemilius, a Doctor of Theology, is the Pope's new Special Secretary. He takes the place of Father Fabian Pedacchio, the Argentine priest who worked alongside the Pope from 2013 to 2019, and who returned last December to his post at the Congregation of Bishops.

Father Aemilius was born in Montevideo on 18 September 1979 and was ordained a priest on 6 May 2006.

Pope to Roman Rota: protect and promote Christian couples
25 January 2020, 17:23

Pope Francis on Saturday received in the Vatican members of the Apostolic Tribunal of the Roman Rota, at the start of their judicial year. He held up Priscilla and Aquila, the Christian missionary married couple described in the New Testament, as a model of married life that needs to be defended and promoted by the Church.
By Robin Gomes

Married couples are evangelizers on the move who, open to the Holy Spirit, become models of married life with their closeness, gratuitousness and the leaven of their witness.

The Pope made the point to the members of the Roman Rota, the Catholic Church highest court that handles ‎appeals of marriage ‎annulment ‎cases.  It also deals with other judicial and non-administrative cases related to Canon Law.

He held up Aquila and Priscilla, described in the Acts of the Apostles, as a holy model of married life.  The Pope said this is what our parishes need, especially in urban areas where the parish priest and his clerical collaborators will never have time and strength to reach the faithful who don’t frequent the sacraments and perhaps are almost unaware of the knowledge of Christ.

Pope, US bishops talk about political polarization infecting the Church
Catholic News Service  Jan 27, 2020

ROME - Catholics need to be on guard against allowing the angry rhetoric that comes from a polarized society, especially in an election year, to seep into discussions about the life of the Church, Pope Francis told a group of U.S. bishops.

Thirty-three bishops, auxiliary bishops and retired bishops from California, Nevada and Hawaii met Francis for more than two-and-a-half hours Jan. 27.

Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone of San Francisco said the topics included: Youth and young adult ministry, Marian devotion, the clerical sexual abuse crisis, marriage and family life, migration, how to be a good bishop, political divisions within the United States and how some of that divisive rhetoric is seen within the Church as well.

Some bishops “brought up the polarization in society and how this is affecting the Church,” he said. One bishop described for the pope “how as a society, you know, we’re more and more divided, and people attack each other.”

Francis said something similar is “sometimes happening in the Church when different factions try to find something to attack people on personally, and so the Holy Father spoke about this politicization of pastoral life,” Cordileone said.

Pope at Mass: Christians without joy are prisoners of formalities
28 January 2020, 13:46

Pope Francis is urging Christians not to be ashamed of expressing their joy of meeting God and feeling His closeness. He made the exhortation at Mass at the Casa Santa Marta Tuesday morning, saying the Gospel will only go ahead with evangelizers full of joy, a joy that also continues in the family at table together with the Lord.
By Robin Gomes

Pope Francis took the inspiration of his homily from the day’s First Reading, which speaks of the great joy with which David and all the people of Israel were celebrating the return of the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem following its capture.

The Holy Father recalled his predecessor, Saint Pope Paul VI in his Apostolic Exhortation "Evangelii Nuntiandi," saying “the Gospel will not go forward with boring, bitter evangelizers”. “ It will only go forward with joyful evangelizers, full of life.”  The Pope thus urged for the joy of receiving the Word of God, the joy of being Christians, the joy of going ahead, the ability to celebrate without being ashamed and not being like Michal, formal Christians, prisoners of formalities.

Pope Francis to publish a book with reflections on St. John Paul II
By Courtney Mares

Vatican City, Jan 28, 2020 / 08:00 am (CNA).- Pope Francis has co-authored a book of reflections on the life of St. John Paul II to be published in Italian.

The book, entitled "St. John Paul the Great," is the product of a series of conversations between Pope Francis and Fr. Luigi Maria Epicoco which took place from June 2019 to January 2020, according to its preface.

The book is expected to be published sometime ahead of the 100 year anniversary of the birth of Karol Wojtyla on May 18.

When Wojtyla became Pope John Paul II in 1978, a 41-year-old Fr. Jorge Mario Bergoglio was serving as the provincial superior of the Jesuits in Argentina. Pope John Paul II appointed Bergoglio to be an auxiliary bishop in 1992, elevating him to become Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998, and creating him a cardinal in 2001. Pope Francis canonized St. John Paul II in 2014.

The book’s co-author, Fr. Epicoco, 39, has written two dozen books on spirituality since his ordination in 2005, including “John Paul II: Memories of a Holy Pope” which he wrote with Archbishop Piero Marini in 2014. Epicoco is a professor of philosophy at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, and offers numerous lectures and spiritual retreats throughout Italy.

Update:  the Benedict XVI-Cardinal Sarah book, From the Depths of Our Hearts: Priesthood, Celibacy and the Crisis of the Catholic Church

Cdl Sarah denounces ‘brutal’ attacks on Benedict over book defending priestly celibacy
Mon Jan 27, 2020 - 5:07 pm EST
By Dorothy Cummings McLean

ROME, January 27, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – Cardinal Robert Sarah has condemned the “brutality” and the “indecency” of attacks made on Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI when news of their co-authored book defending priestly celibacy emerged.

Speaking to Italian newspaper Il Foglio, which published an interview with the Guinean cardinal on January 25, Sarah said there has been “a lot of talk about utterly ridiculous aspects secondary” to the themes of the book.

“Absurd controversies, vulgar lies, and horrible humiliations have followed one another against Benedict XVI and me,” the cardinal continued.

However, it is the attacks on the former that have wounded Sarah the most.

“What breaks my heart and hurts me deeply is the brutality, the irreverence, the lack of consideration and the indecency with which Benedict XVI has been treated,” he said.

Cardinal Sarah and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI are the co-authors of a book on challenges to the priesthood today. Entitled From the Depths of Our Hearts: Priesthood, Celibacy, and the Crisis of the Catholic Church in English, the Italian version of the book will appear in bookstores on January 30, published by Cantagalli.

Pope at Audience: the Beatitudes are a message for humanity
29 January 2020, 12:35

Inaugurating a new cycle of catechesis dedicated to the Beatitudes, Pope Francis reflects on Jesus’ invitation to conduct a life of humility, poverty and mercy.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis said that In order to give Himself to us, God often chooses "unthinkable" paths that point us beyond our “limitations, tears and failures,” towards that Paschal joy born of Christ’s own passage from death to life.

Speaking to the pilgrims gathered in the Paul VI Hall for the Wednesday General Audience, he reflected on the Sermon on the Mount pronounced by Jesus who, he said, “enlightened” the lives of believers and also of many non-believers.

“It is difficult,” the Pope said, not to be touched by these words, and he encouraged the faithful to understand and welcome them “ever more fully” because “they contain a kind of Christian identity card”.

Pope at Mass: ‘God will judge us with the same measure we have for others’
30 January 2020, 14:51

Pope Francis urges the faithful to relate to others in a truly “Christian” way which is generous and full of love, and he explains that we will be judged with the same measure with which we measure others.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis reflected on the liturgical reading from the Gospel of Mark on Thursday morning during Mass at the Casa Santa Marta noting that it is full of advice for the faithful.

The Christian ‘measure’

Highlighting the passage that says "The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you,” the Pope said that at some point of our lives, and especially at the end of our existence, we are all called to account for how we have lived our life.

These words, he explained, "tell us exactly what that moment will be like”, that is how we will be judged.

He noted that while in chapter 25 of Matthew’s Gospel, the evangelist tells us "what we have to do”, today’s passage indicates the "style with which we have to live.

“By what measure do I measure others? By what measure do I measure myself? Is it a generous measure, full of God's love? Or is it a low level measure?” he said, underscoring the need to take stock not only of the bad or the good things we do, but of our daily lifestyle.

Pope: Society is “civil” if it fights against a “culture of waste”
30 January 2020, 13:02

Pope Francis on Thursday received members of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, who are holding their Plenary Assembly. In his address, the Holy Father spoke about the “intangible value” of human life, of care for the terminally ill, and of the need to rewrite the “grammar” of responsibility and caring for those who are suffering.
By Vatican News

Pope Francis on Thursday said that modern society “is progressively eroding the understanding of that which makes human life precious” by evaluating life in terms of efficiency and utility. He delivered the warning in an address to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which is meeting in Plenary Assembly.

Speaking specifically to the issue of care for the terminally ill – the focus of the reflections of the Congregation – the Pope talked about the need to “convert the gaze of the heart” in the light of compassion, and praised the work of hospices where the “therapy of dignity” is practiced.

In his address, Pope Francis also encouraged members of the Congregation to continue “with firmness” their studies concerning the revision of the norms on “more serious crimes” (“graviora delicta”) in order to proceed along the path of transparency and of respect for the dignity of the “smallest” among us.

Pope at Mass: worldliness, a slow slide into sin
31 January 2020, 13:30

One of the evils of our time is to slip into a state where one loses the sense of sin. Pope Francis made the point in his homily at Mass Friday morning at the Casa Santa Marta, noting that even a holy king like David had fallen into this temptation. Worldliness, he said, is at the root of this.
By Robin Gomes

Reflecting on King David in the First Reading, Pope Francis, in his homily, noted that the King of Israel had slipped into a comfortable life, forgetting he was elected by God.  He spoke about a normal, quiet life where a heart that remains unperturbed even in the face of the most serious sins, saying, it is a worldliness that robs us of the sense of sin and evil.

Worldiness

Pope Francis mentioned the sins of David such as the census of the people and the story of Uriah whom he got killed after making his wife, Bathsheba, pregnant.  He chose murder because his plan to put things right, after adultery, failed miserably. David continued his normal life quietly and his heart did not move.

Pope Francis wondered how the great David, who was holy, who had done so many good things and who was so united with God, could have done that. This did not happen overnight, the Pope said, adding, David slipped slowly.  He noted that there are sins of the moment, such as anger or insult that one cannot control, but there are also sins into which one slips slowly, with the spirit of worldliness.  It's the spirit of the world, the Pope said, that leads you to do these things as if they were normal. “An assassination...!”

Pope Francis: Elderly have a role in God’s saving plan
31 January 2020, 13:14

Participants at a conference on the pastoral care of the elderly were received in audience by Pope Francis on Friday. In his address, the Holy Father invites the Church to “change her pastoral attitudes in order to respond to the presence of so many elderly people in families and communities”.
By Christopher Wells

At an audience for participants in a conference on pastoral care of the elderly, Pope Francis said old-age is “a precious treasure that takes shape in the journey of every man and woman’s life, whatever their origins, background, or economic or social conditions.” He said, “Life is a gift, and when it is long it is a privilege, for oneself and for others. Always.” He called on the Church to care for the elderly, going to them with “a smile on your face and the Gospel in your hands”.

He noted that the world is facing a significant demographic change, with fewer young people and a large increase in the number of elderly. He said that issues facing the elderly – including social disorientation, and societal attitudes of indifference and rejection, are a call to the Church and to society “to serious reflection in order to learn to grasp and appreciate the value of old age”.

France: Cardinal Barbarin acquitted of covering up clerical sexul abuse
31 January 2020, 12:02

The Appeals Court in Lyon has acquitted a French Cardinal who had been accused of failing to report abuse of minors in his Diocese.
By Vatican News

The Director of the Vatican Press Office released a statement on Thursday evening saying “The Holy See has learnt of the decision of Lyon’s Appeals Court regarding Cardinal Philippe Barbarin”.

In the statement, Matteo Bruni also said that Barbarin has once again put his ecclesial mandate back into the hands of Pope Francis “who continues to follow closely the unfolding of these painful events, and will communicate his decision in due time.”

Bruni concludes noting that “together with the French Bishops’ Conference, the Holy See reaffirms its closeness to all the victims of abuse, in their suffering, and to their families and communities, and sustains the Church of Lyon, which is sorely tried.”

Leaked Amazon synod text on priestly ordination of married men a draft

Vatican City, Jan 31, 2020 / 03:15 pm (CNA).- A text presented Friday by Roberto de Mattei of Corrispondenza Romana as a portion of Pope Francis' apostolic exhortation following the Amazon synod is a draft, and not necessarily the final version, according to a Vatican source.

“What is now circulating is one draft, which was distributed for review and comment as the final text is developed,” a source in the Dicastery for Communication told CNA Jan. 31.

The text provided by de Mattei is substantially identical to article 111 of the final document of the Amazon synod, which calls for the ordination of married men as priests.

That article of the final document proposes “that criteria and dispositions be established by the competent authority, within the framework of Lumen Gentium 26, to ordain as priests suitable and respected men of the community … who have had a fruitful permanent diaconate and receive an adequate formation for the priesthood, in order to sustain the life of the Christian community through the preaching of the Word and the celebration of the Sacraments in the most remote areas of the Amazon region.”

According to de Mattei, the text he published came to him “from several bishops” who had received a portion of the forthcoming apostolic exhortation.

Earlier this month Cardinal Claudio Hummes, the relator general of the Amazon synod, sent a letter to some ordinaries indicating that the apostolic exhortation should be promulgated in January or February.

“The draft is currently being reviewed and corrected and then needs to be translated. Pope Francis hopes to promulgate it by the end of this month or in early February,” Cardinal Hummes, who is also president of the Pan Amazonic Church Network, wrote in a Jan. 13 letter.

Update: Cardinal Pell

Cardinal Pell Uses Time Well in Prison While Awaiting Final Appeal Decision
Edward Pentin

Cardinal George Pell is in “good spirits” and has “developed a personal ministry, writing back to other prisoners who have been writing to him about their lives,” a source close to the former head of the Vatican treasury has told the Register.

One of the sources who had seen the cardinal recently said the Cardinal Pell was “quietly confident” about his High Court appeal hearing, which is expected to take place around March 12-13. The appeal pleadings were filed in early January, and prosecutors submitted their response Jan. 31.

It remains unclear how long the seven High Court judges will take to come to a conclusions and prepare their judgment, but it is likely to be given a few weeks after the hearing.

If the cardinal’s appeal is granted, he will be immediately released, but he will still have to serve at least two years and eight months in prison if his conviction is upheld.

Pope urges humanization of medicine and healthcare service
01 February 2020, 14:29

“The sick person is not a number: he or she is a person who needs humanity,” Pope Francis told representatives of the Villa Maria Care & Research Group. He particularly drew attention to “closeness”.
By Robin Gomes

Pope Francis is urging healthcare facilities to be more and more homes of welcome and comfort, where the sick person finds friendship, understanding, kindness and charity -  in other words, humanity.

The sick - not a number

“The sick person is not a number: he or she is a person who needs humanity,” the Pope told representatives of the Villa Maria Care & Research Group on Saturday.  The Italian healthcare company, founded in 1973, has over 9,000 employees in its facilities in Italy, France, Albania, Poland, Russia and Ukraine.

Treating a person with humanity, the Pope said, calls for the collaboration of all in order to meet the needs of the sick with a spirit of service and an attitude of generosity and sensitivity.”

Pope: Religious life means seeing what really matters
01 February 2020, 17:40

Pope Francis celebrates a Vigil Mass on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, which is observed as the World Day of Consecrated Life. In his homily, the Pope says that religious life means “seeing what really matters in life”.
By Christopher Wells

At the Mass for the Presentation of the Lord, Pope Francis focused on the words of Simeon when he encountered Christ in the Temple: “My eyes have seen your salvation” (Lk 2:30).

Speaking directly to consecrated men and women, present for the World Day of Consecrated Life, the Pope said that they, like Simeon, “are simple men and women who caught sight of the treasure worth more than any worldly good”. The ability to recognize Jesus, to see “what really matters in life”, is at the heart of religious life, he said.

Pope at Angelus: allow yourselves to be moved and amazed
02 February 2020, 12:10

Pope Francis looks to the example of Mary and Joseph, and Simeon and Anna, to mark the 24th World Day for Consecrated life, celebrated on Sunday, the Liturgical Feast of the Presentation of the Lord.
By Francesca Merlo

Pope Francis began his Sunday Angelus by telling the faithful gathered in St Peter’s Square that the World Day for Consecrated Life reminds us of the “great treasure” in the Church of all those who “follow the Lord closely, professing the evangelical counsels”.

The Pope referred to Luke 2:22-40, which tells of Jesus’ consecration to God, 40 days after his birth. Other than describing a ritual foreseen by tradition, said the Pope, this episode brings to our attention a few people who are “caught in a moment in which they experience a meeting with the Lord in the place in which He makes Himself present and close to humanity”.

These people, explained the Pope, are Mary and Joseph, Simeon and Anna, who represent “models of availability and of the offering of their very lives to God”. Luke the evangelist describes them all through two attitudes: movement and amazement.
